The Last Guardian early copy impressions thread

I really doubt that. That game looks cool, don't get me wrong, but this kind of thing is far more difficult to convincingly pull off when you have to work in realistic looking 3D.
It has an ecosystem of 35+ different species of predators and prey that all interact within and without their species independent of you, can adapt to changes in the environment and the behavior of other species, whose behavior is depending on their own dynamic personality and body types, with some species that can work together in packs (completely with alphas that command the others)

The way Trico is supposed to become more friendly to you if you're nice to it? Every species has that, for every other individual animal and the player, and it can shift depending on your actions. Be nice, save an animal from predators, feed it, etc., and it could become an ally that protects you and doesn't act aggressive, even one of your natural predator. One species is intelligent and roams in packs, playing with each other and sharing tools, and can spread one's feeling about you to the entirety of the pack, so help them out and they'll eventually let you roam with their pack rather than being nervous and aggressive around you.

I keep hearing about Rain World and its AI, but I hadn't looked at a trailer before. Wow, I'm really intrigued.
Yeah, the devs have been working on it for almost six years. The word is one massive interconnected environment of different regions, and one of the biggest. About 1,500 hand-crafted "rooms"

Eurogamer said this game is getting a Pro patch. Are these impressions with Pro features enabled?

Serious question: do the people saying parts of the game look PS3ish have a point or is that just trolling?

Glad most people are enjoying it.

Hopefully it sells well so Team Ico gets to continue on. Nobody else focuses on AI quite like they do in the big budget arena. So... please encourage that more.

Pretty graphics are okay, but I'd much rather a game actually feel intelligent than look at something pretty but stupid as hell.

I watched EC's animation breakdown of SOTC, and he throws in just a few seconds of TLG's run cycle, and it's crazy how improved it is over both previous games. I think many people are not giving TLG's animation and attention to detail enough credit, perhaps because it's so good that we don't really notice it when viewing it as a whole.
Here's that Extra Credits series on the Shadow of the Colossus. Team Ico was doing amazing thing 11 years ago. I can't wait to see how they use the camera in TLG
Timing | Inverse Kinematics & Climbing | The Camera | The Third Colossus

Continuing the length confirmations, the Gamefaqs guy says he's played about 10 hours and he suspects that his overall playtime will be 11-12 hours

God this just makes me want another game in the style of SotC. Yes, I know there's that indie game, but I wish more people would explore games like that. It's such an amazing concept I'm not sure why it's only been done once.

Likely because it's a genre of one and the concept is so unique and specific that any attempt to copy it will be seen as a derivative ripoff (much like the sentiment that birthed terms like Doomlike and Roguelike). Just look at the reactions on GAF when Prey For The Gods was first revealed

Most likely trolling. I mean, one of the best rpgs on pc in 2015 was Pillars of Eternity and that game looks like Baldur's Gate II. But it's awesome anyway.

That search for the best graphics possible is destroying this industry bit by bit for years now.

Oh my god, thank you very much for this, never heard of this game before, super excited.

Rain World. Probably actually more advanced than Trico's AI. There's good reason why Ueda said he loved the game's tech
Good one, but again, it's not out yet, and it's been in development for a long time as well I believe.

Point is Ico, SotC, and now TLG all bring something new to gaming scene, TLG is no different as it's doing something very different with AI and animations.

Just picked it up! Eager to get into it finally after all these years. I'll update with impressions from what I play this weekend.

Man...it says something that this thread is building hype for me for TLG...a game which has had me on a rollercoaster of hype for years.

This year has been something else.

We got an critically acclaimed Ico-inspired game in Inside and then a game from the actual devs
A great demonic old school shooter in Devil Daggers and then the return of the genre's king in Doom
And a gorgerous take on the Myst-like through The Witness and then Cyan's legit return to the genre with Obduction

I seriously need to know before I think about buying this. Does Trico die at the end? I don't know if I could handle that.

This is the most expected(or predicted) ending at this point. I hope the ending is something else because it's sort of spoiled in a way and I am not sure Trico dying will have same impact the developers were hoping for.

To be fair, an expected ending doesnt mean an emotionally bereft ending. Look at all the great historical dramas. Even if Trico does die, the impact would be informed by the hours of playing alongside him

Ive always thought of the team Ico games as "art house" projects. Not unlike indie films. They are a little rough around the edges, but they tend to have a lot more heart and individuality than big budget films.

These type of games were never meant to be "perfect". Their lack of technical stability is countered by their unique and original charm.

These type of games shouldn't just be put under a technical microscope, they should be admired for the emotion and wonder they aspire too. It's not always about graphics and gameplay. Sometimes it's also about atmosphere and pure emotion.

There are moments in Ico and SOTC that I'll remember for the rest of my life. Don't ask if I can really recall a "moment" from most games these days.
