The Last Guardian |OT| In my memories, the monster always has kind eyes

I think I'm halfway there, and been there for a few weeks. It's just so hard to touch it when I've got a couple of rounds of fast and fun overwatch to play.

Right now, trading it in for money or another game with for honor and nioh coming out, without even having completed it, doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

But yea. I should probably complete it first.

I understand the discussion. It's not a bad game. It's just a very passive one.

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
It's not alright reducing anybody elses opinion to just hype.

Seeing the candor of their responses I'm just going to avoid talking about it with them. More power to them to dislike this game or any other but the hyperbolic negativity is a bit eye rolling.

It's not very long, so you could probably finish it before trading it in and getting Nioh day one, just dedicate yourself to it for a few days, if you feel like it. :p

I don't know about the rest of you but my enjoyment is purely wrapped around Sony's expertly crafted, multiphase marketing extravaganza, as well as the overwhelming gushing response on NeoGAF dot com where not a single person complained about anything. Not once.

I didn't even need to bother playing the game as I was able to acquire opinion via osmosis.

Actually just beat this the other day myself. Probably would put it at"flawed masterpiece", where I'd put Shadow of the Colossus and Ico (to a lesser degree, and that's still probably my favorite of the three). AKA it's beautiful and there's a lot it does right, but there are some definite frustrating/awkward bits. Like, the biggest one for me was that Trico's AI really is solid and generally works like you'd want... but I felt like there was a bit too much delay to him locking on and "platforming" a lot of the time, to a degree where it often wasn't necessarily clear if that's what was supposed to happen. Especially at the end this was driving me nuts a bit. Spent waaay too long trying to get Trico to
jump up that one cliff near the end, when you pop out into a sunlit balcony and there are some eyes you can destroy, which I did. But man, he just kept popping up so I can jump up, but refused to jump up himself despite me knowing what to do for way too long.
Also, the times where you had to throw barrels along paths, while not excessively hard, felt like something jankier than should've been put in the game. Oh, and that damn
section in the cage
was straight awful and pure frustration for me.

That said, the way that it makes you feel truly attached to this big old AI you're escorting around is truly wonderful, and it really is a great experience that shouldn't be missed. Just a shame it wasn't a tad tighter.

I'll spoiler it just to be sure but can someone tell me how I can see how many
barrels I've collected, either in-game or at the title menu somewhere? I know I've missed one but it would be nice to check this.
I believe it's possible since I've seen others online mention theirs without specifying where they saw it.

Cheers.

I'm stuck fairly early on. Came outside to an area with a broken bridge. Down the right there is a narrow path to a barrel. Back up where the bridge is there seems to be a switch on top of a platform over on the left. I cannot get Trico to lift me up to the switch and he doesn't seem to want to jump over the broken bridge. Tried finding out what to do a few times but gave up each time.

Guess it's time to ask. I can take a PS4 picture if my description isn't great. On mobile so would have to boot up PC to upload picture for GAF.

If it's the area I am thinking of, in the barrel room feed Trico the barrel and make get him to jump on top of the totem on middle of the room to learn new tricks.

Think it's further on than that. The barrel I speak of is like a "hidden one". You go down a narrow pathway that's outside on the side of the building.

The checkpoint literally saves coming outside, and the broken bridge I speak of is right in front of you. Barrel is down to the right. Switch is to the left up on top of a platform. Trico sits in front of the platform if you call him over, but even with standing on his head it's not high enough to get up. He just sits in front of the broken bridge as well, won't jump over.

Edit: LOL. The gate underneath the switch can be squeezed through. I'm an idiot.

You only get to see it after finishing the game. It's displayed in a menu for subsequent plays.

Had my ups and downs with the game, always compelled to keep playing and always feeling more and more attached to Trico, but sometimes getting frustrated with him not doing what I wanted.

Finished it last night and those gripes genuinely do become part of the experience, as corny as that sounds.

Everything from the
cutscene 3/4 of the way through
to the absolutely mind blowing
final "battle"
and the
heart wrenching ending
just elevates the entire game to legendary status.

It's a 10, there's nothing like TLG.

Right now, trading it in for money or another game with for honor and nioh coming out, without even having completed it, doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

Finish it, the last 3rd is among the best I've played in gaming, ever. It pulls everything together.

Why are we engaging the same dude who called uncharted 4 a walking simulator? Why get a ps4 if none of the games appeal? We get it; if it's not explodey, overexposure of titillation or devoid of an engaging story, then said game is not for you

I mean, if he's playing the games, then he's at least giving them a shot, no need to go out digging his previous posts to attack him. Let him shit on the games, it's fine.

Finally reached the part shown off at multiple gaming expos. I do have to admit the controls and camera dicking around have annoyed me a bit. From memory they weren't as bad as this in Ico or SotC.

On the other hand coding Trico must have been an absolute bitch. Such a loveable cat bird dog as well. However, creating a game around its size requires some game design magic. I can't knock that, but the camera is outright dreadful at times. As is the sloppy controls. Not so much the weighty feeling, that is trademark Team Ico. It's more jumping in the wrong direction, not climbing smoothly, clinging onto Trico "incorrectly" and just general clumsiness.

So far I've enjoyed my journey but I hope there is more to come.

My bad, just came back to thread after a few weeks and it was the first thing I read, so it just threw me off.

The first 2/3 of the game is really about slowly becoming familiar with Trico and giving a sense of scale and humble beginnings to the journey. He needs to feel like an old friend and you need to have had a variety of different experiences with him, positive and negative, so I don't think there was any other way of doing it now that I've finished it and looking back. It's a game that you will not know how you feel about until you see the words The End.

The game absolutely explodes in the final third and all that time spent in the first two gives it emotional weight that I haven't really experienced in a game before.

Yeah I'd guess as much. My screenshot folder is littered with pictures of Trico being a clumsy dumbass or looking suave. Also dem eyes. Constantly looks like a sad puppy. Feels.

Unless this is a story spoiler, does Trico actually get angry with you? I accidentally smashed a food barrel into its face in the opening part (thinking it was going to catch it in mid air,) and felt so bad. I'm waiting for it to get sick of my shit and just murder me.

Trico gets angry for a fair few reasons and I won't spoil anything lol. Not that I've completed the game, I'm still playing.

Your complaints about the controls and camera are totally valid and I don't think anyone could disagree, they are objectively bad, and at times really pissed me off. There's no excusing it and it adds nothing to the game - basically Ueda gets away with it by the end because the virtues outweigh them to the extent that you can forgive it, and these are not normally things I can ever forgive also that says a lot about what else the game offers.

Trico not doing what you want drove me even more mad at times, like actually shouting at the TV mad, but looking back, that actually did add something. It might sound like apologism but that frustration did add some authenticity and depth when viewed as part of the relationship you have with him... And believe me, by the end, it will feel like a relationship. For myself it is by far the strongest relationship I've felt towards a video game character ever, and I will remember it for years to come.

I think our individual tolerances and approach are big factors. While the controls as they are might not add anything, I don't think they take anything away either. As I recall, in my time with the game thus far there has been only two instances where I got actually annoyed with the game.
On my first playthrough, where the two Tricos fight on the bridge, jumping at the chain where you need to climb up, I kept missing it and falling to a game over screen (I did it first time on my second playthrough). The second time was the catapult/helmet puzzle.

I actually find Shadow of the Colossus much more frustrating to be honest. I mean, I can't really complain about it, as the unforgiving nature of clinging onto those colossi, trying to reach and attack the weak spots is basically the game's challenge. But it doesn't make it any less aggravating at times. There was nothing in The Last Guardian as annoying, for me, as trying to get that opening to strike the weak spot on colossus 15's head, especially as there isn't much skill involved. It's just waiting/hoping for Wander to stop swinging around and find some grip. I would also say the camera is worse too, but is less of a problem because the areas where you fight/travel are much more open than in TLG. But again, we all have tolerances for, and approaches to different things.

Some of my screenshots:

Fantastic game

I'm stuck again lol. Picking up from where I finished last night, at the part we've seen in many demos. Dropped down and pushed a cart with the eye glass off the edge of a narrow walkway. It tumbles down and takes a chunk of the walkway with it as its rope fixture rips off. Trico is standing where I jumped down from but I can't get back up as the ladder is broke. I cannot get him to jump down either, just stares at me.

Point (R1 + left stick) to the bridge just past where you pushed the eye off.

I just finished this.

It was a struggle to get through it at first due to the, frankly, appalling performance on the PS4 Slim - especially when going in to grassy areas. It was actually giving me a headache playing it.

Soldiered on and managed to start looking past it, but I wasn't a fan of how you "control" Trico. There were multiple times I'd be stuck in an area for 20 minutes or so exhausting every option of pointing, jumping, exploring - only to decide to reload the checkpoint and he does what I want first time. Noteably the bits where it's pitch black (almost) and he needs to jump up a wall (he refused to first time), and before a bridge/tunnel where he needed to jump through a window (again, just stared at the window the first time).

That said, Trico is fantastically animated and made me miss my 2 dogs back home every second of playing it. They absolutely nailed it's personality of an animal, the way it paws at it's food, turns it's head sideways when looking at things, stamping it's feet etc.

And the story is an emotional rollercoaster, as expected.

I doubt any of my complaints or praises are new, though.

Thanks. I was pointing about everywhere but I must not have hit the right "area" until I was more specific in my aiming.

Edit: That whole set piece still brings some feels even when I roughly knew what was coming!

Man, what is the deal with jumping off chains as well? Unless I'm being an idiot it seems totally random if you can actually get the boy to decide to jump off or instead just keep jumping up the chain.

Its based around the camera orientation. Set the camera so its got the boy on the chain to one side of the screen and the platform you're trying to jump to on the other side of your screen. Then you should be able to get the boy to reach out when you push towards the platform with the left stick.

Well that ends my run. I had been playing the game with little to no frustration, adapted to the controls and camera quickly, was able to get Trico to do pretty much what I wanted and what not etc. I think I'm 75% of my way through. While I had already pretty much come to the conclusion this is a game I'm not going to keep, I still intended on finishing it and was enjoying the experience/atmosphere/music. Thought people talking about their issues with Trico had zero patience or something, looks like I was wrong. I hit my wall.

Stuck on a part for 30 minutes. Gave up, figured I was missing something or doing something wrong, decided to check a walkthrough, turns out I was doing everything right but Trico is just not doing what he's supposed to. Booted up the game again, tried for another 20 minutes, nope. Booted up the game AGAIN just now, tried another 20 minutes, and still nope. So yeah, selling the game today. I gave it a fair shot. Will check out the rest of the game on youtube or something.

I'm at the part where you need to get Trico to
dive and take you through an underwater tunnel that you can't reach on your own, he just swims and once in a while comes back up and shakes off all the water. Managed to dive once but stopped halfway and came back up before reaching the tunnel.

You can force a dive from Trico by making the boy dive down for a few seconds. Trico will follow after him and if you are close the boy will immediately latch on. Also dumb question but did you open the gate for him to dive through?

To the first part, have repeatedly tried that actually as I saw that tip somewhere else as well, that was the only thing that resulted in that one proper attempt that failed halfway, but he hasn't done it again no matter how much I've tried.

And to the second part, obviously, LOL.

Not sure then. I've done two play throughs and never had an issue with this section in terms of getting Trico to do what I want without much fuss.

The art style in this game is amazing. The level design is fantastic. But bloody hell this is the single most frustrating game I've ever played. The AI is terrible, the camera is trash and the controls are even worse. Trico misinterpreting my commands and jumping back the way we came, for some reason circle being assigned to both shooting lasers and petting Trico, the camera glitching out in small spaces and moving just before I jump onto a ledge so I miss it. Regardless of the many years of hype, I can't wait to be done with this tbh.

You seem bound and determined to sell the game in a rush so probably little to dissuade you but I have gotten that on the first try on 3 different playthroughs by being on trico's back on the surface close the tunnel entrance and command pointing forward and downward towards the water. Trico will look down first and dive.

Using L1 helps a lot with the the camera and also turning the sensitivity all the way up as well. As to the AI I'm never sure what to say on this as I found Trico very easy to work with after early sections where I didn't know what I was doing. If anything some parts where a little easy as Trico did a lot of the hard work with minimal inputs from me.

Camera and controls are trash, AI is just a bit iffy.

I accept programming and developing this game must have been an absolute nightmare, with the size of Trico and trying to implement puzzles and the environment around him. However, some of the camera jank and control nonsense could be much better, irrespective of Trico. The control response feels a step back from Ico and SotC.

I've just gone through a short part in the darkness with Tricos eyes acting as lights lol. I'll repeat what I said on the last page, this is NOT a game for those with height fears lol.

I wouldn't call "still playing a game more than a month after it was purchased and trying to get past a certain section 3/4ths of the way through a game, for nearly 70 minutes" a rush. But yeah, I've pretty much decided now to sell it at this point without any intention of booting the game up again. It's more out of frustration than anything else.

Seeing as I had no issues whatsoever in other parts of the game where people seemed to have issues with Trico, I have to chalk this up to the AI finally showing its uncooperative/frustrating side to me that other people have been seeing in other parts.

This game has some weirdly inconsistent technical issues. :\ I don't know how anyone could be stuck on that part for so long, but you're not the first, so there is clearly a problem with the game of sorts.

In that part, R1+O worked for me, but the game is frustratingly vague about what command does what and you feel like you're just blindly trying it all.
That said, fortunately i only got stuck once because of broken ai behaviour, and it was for about 5 minutes.

Not to call anyone out here but watching several popular streamers losing their minds at certain parts I just think some people don't really figure out the basic systems even late into the game and I'm not just talking about what button does what but even the little things like Trico literally looking directly at points of interest, hidden barrels, etc. Even things like people not knowing how to jump off chains easily enough seems to be beyond certain folks and not to say they're doing it wrong or whatever since that just seems to get people on the defensive I think the game has a lot of subtle little inputs and elements that most people never notice and it makes life a lot harder.

For example the diving area that troubles so many... is a breeze for me, even on the first time through. I think the most difficult thing was I stupidly didn't
raise the gate
in the first area and was totally baffled until I realized my obvious mistake.

It is kinda difficult to believe that the game glitches or something since I've read so many different approaches to working solutions to the dive section while mine was different and worked perfectly both times I played the game.

But hey, maybe the game does glitch.

Many times the ai just locks up.
The time i got stuck, i knew what i had to do, i did it, but Trico wouldnt move.
Tried ordering once and waiting... nope, tried spamming...nope.

Looked up the solution and, sure enough, i was doing it right.
Reloaded the game and Trico executed on first attempt, despite me doing exactly the same thing i did before.

The game gets away with a lot of bullshit with the "it's vague/janky on purpose" thing, because its harder to demonstrate when the ai genuinely locks up, but it happens, and its not just people being too stupid to get it.
