It is a linear narrative that the player has zero effect upon, and the narrative is what carries the game. Nobody would care about tlou if it wasn't for the story.

There aren't many games where watching a youtube cutscene compilation will give you the gist of a game, but tlou is one of them.
That is how you feel and you are projecting it as universal truth for some reason, many others like the gameplay (remember its launch and its remaster launch too) and thus how you experience the story progression.

3rd person narrative action adventure isn't really ambitious. 1st person open world with optional dialog and consequences? Because to them, that would be ambitious.

So, more generic Western AAA trash, then.

Case in point of trolling for the sake of trolling... now expect some crying about SonyGAF not letting you enjoy your threads alone as soon as any criticism is raised in other games’ threads (seeing The_Mike The_Mike and the other in the group thumbing up and posting generic trashy comments... we get it, Druckman is woke, that irritates some people, there are lesbians in the game and men are not the centre of attention as it is normally the case, fine...feel free to keep one line shitposts in every TLoU thread that pops up... SonyGAF alright)...

yeah troy is not really difficult to be a better and more ambitious game compared with the snoozefest that was uncharted 4...

just the absence of the fucking brother and boring climbing\young sections and an actual pacing make the game better by default.

Well, their bar of ambition has been relatively low to begin with. They are very good at what they do but their games are nowhere near ambitios in terms of size, complexity, interactivity. I'm not afraid to describe their games as simple. People tend to shit on other games for the same things they turn a blind eye when it comes to ND games - linearity, simple and repitive gameplay, everything being scripted and little to no replay value.

Naughty Dog is about to make you thier bitch!

I'm sure it'll be a fine game, but have some dignity and let the press do your wanking.

It's going to be average at best, just like the first one. But count on journos and normies to overrate it.

Also I will never give a penny to people like Druckmann.

I mean if you ignore the frame of the question and just look at his answer he didn't say anything unreasonable.

It sucks he would pay any attention to Anita but that answer is not the worst outcome of her influences.

I'm happy i played TLoU before i had the chance to play the Uncharted Trilogy, because i got tired of the formula once i went from Uncharted 1 to 2. Move from setpiece to setpiece, cover, shoot, walk and talk, happy/sad cutscene, cover shoot, walk and talk.

I don't know how you can play game after game, after game the same with with different backgrounds.

People call the Heath Ledger's performance in the Dark Knight just "ok" and claim that people are overrating his performance.

Do you guys calling something "overrated" change people's opinion of the game?

If the majority are calling the game great, then the game is clearly not overrated.

You can't argue with results.

It's time to accept that Naughty Dog did a great job.

That's a way to look at it, to accept it as good because the majority says so. Or you can critically look at the game and realize that people are ignoring the shallow game play, the dumb AI, the worse than average combat, the lack of any real reason to use crafting and the long walks in corridors with characters regurgitating garbage dialogue just because the game has nice cinematic cutscenes and a cliche Hollywood zombie plot. If it wasn't for those two and the game would have been scored for what it is, average at best.

Naughty dog does deserve credit for their story telling and directing of some great cinematic segments, but they did a poor job when it comes to gamedesign.

Wow.

There's so many things wrong with your post.

a cliche Hollywood zombie plot

False.

Each "zombie" movie is not the same.

World War Z movie is about stopping the zombie outbreak
Resident Evil 1 and 2 is about discovering the secrets of Umbrella Corp
Days Gone is about Deacon finding his wife Sarah

Last of Us is about the relationship between Joel and Ellie. There's nothing to discover about the outbreak, because the solution to the problem is revealed within the first 30 into the game.

The fact that you called it a cliche Hollywood zombie plot just shows you that many people who call it a zombie game don't know what they're talking about.

you can critically look at the game and realize that people are ignoring the shallow game play, the dumb AI, the worse than average combat, the lack of any real reason to use crafting

Crafting system just makes things easier. It is not necessary and the developers know that.

What YOU don't know is that not people need things to be made easier considering most games who play games are casuals.

Of course, this is only for single player where multiplayer is basically requiredd.

Dumb AI?

Sounds like a lot of games made today. lol

Melee hand-to-hand combat is arguably top notch. IT's not bad man or spider-man since the game is grounded and going for more realistic approach, but not many games today give you the same feel when it comes to hand to hand combat.

you can critically look at the game and realize that people are ignoring the shallow game play, the dumb AI, the worse than average combat, the lack of any real reason to use crafting and the long walks in corridors with characters regurgitating garbage dialogue

Again, you know little about what makes a good story, and it's becoming move obvious with every post you make.

Each dialog throughout your journey is part of the story.

It is what you called character development.

Instead of watching more cut-scenes, the developers give you options to learn more about the character's backstory.

If you're going to be critical, just stop using the same insults you heard from others. It feels like copy and paste insults lol.

seeking drama where there is none?

Lots of people find TLOU gameplay dreary & mediocre, myself included; and the story great for a video game (aggressively mediocre for any other medium).

I think the dlc was far superior because it removed all the unnecessary killing. I loved the dlc.The game proper would have been much better, imo, if they removed 99% of the murder and zombie killing and dumb crafting and made it a walking sim with a bit of gameplay here and there.

But non-Nintendo gamers who buy $60 games and/or try to make a living out of reviewing them demand everything have lots and lots of killing and death. They also like stories that aren't embarrassing because, deep down, they feel like being a video game enthusiast makes them inferior, so they love being able to point out 'deep' stories. They remind me of anime fans in that regard.

Sony knows this formula (shoot Stab punch bomb strangulation + 'mature' story = giant profits), hence all their AAA titles follow this formula**. And those who that don't do not get green lit. The rest of the AAA industry is following this lead, btw.

Sure there is a tendency among some to blame TLOU for this trend, but it is market forces and not anyone game. Or at least not that game.

So now everything is getting that treatment, from gears of war to halo to god of war to etc etc. Nintendo still Nintendo though. Pretty sure animal crossing won't have dead wives and murderous revenge plots.

**some point out Sony be efforts, and yes there is some diversity of there, but no aaa stuff. Imagine what Astrobot would have been with TLOU budget. But rescuing cute robot buddies don't sell like mature mass murder sim #18.

I love Naughty Dog games, the original Last of Us was pretty good, Drake, Crash, Jak, are all great but I'm not putting Ellie and Joel in that same elite circle just yet with only one get under their belt. Just something for the Last of Us community to think about.

I'm very excited about the gameplay this time around. I always felt a bit constrained and heavy in the first one.
Now we can jump, squeeze through tight spaces, crawl in short grass and under things, we can dodge melee attacks and arrows...
Feels very fluid and dynamic, more Uncharted like.
I see so much potential in stealth and action/escaping situation and the E3 2018 was a good showing.
I hope it translates to the multiplayer too.

Yeah, but for some of us that's kind of Nintendo's defining flaw. We grew up while they have stayed in an eternal pre-adolescence. Frankly, it makes them irrelevant to my interests.

Is staying in an eternal adolescence any better? Because that is the part of the psyche power fantasies prey upon., even those with dead wives and murderous revenge plots.

The only real ‘grown up’ games in the world are the ones that bring you face to face with friends and family. Which sucks for those of us who hate their families and have trouble with irl friendships. Back to Clicker Heroes...

You fall into the bunch of people who don't know what they're talking about.

If the story was mediocre, then no one would Remember Joel, Ellie and the supporting cast, but they do. Not only that, this has some of the best voice acting in a video game.

Now there are a lot of terrible stories out there, including those in Hollywood, which are filled with terrible acting and tons of plot holes.

And gameplay mediocre?

People still play TLOU today. The multiplayer is still active, yet you want to create this narrative that the gameplay is mediocre?

You don't get that with mediocre gameplay.

A game like Resident Evil 2 doesn't have a lot of gameplay mechanics.

You can't duck, you can't crouch etc, but it's considered game of other year by many people today, because the formula works. This isn't Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, it's a grounded game, and the game play fits perfectly.

And those who that don't do not get green lit. The rest of the AAA industry is following this lead, btw.

Again, you guys are just copying and pasting insults.. I suggest being more original.

AAA industry goes for a cinematic approach when creating a triple A game with a story.

That's it.

So now everything is getting that treatment, from gears of war to halo to god of war to etc etc. Nintendo still Nintendo though. Pretty sure animal crossing won't have dead wives and murderous revenge plots.

And more proof that you don't know what you're talking about - lol.

Yes, people blame Last of Us for this and it makes me believe those who complain about this cinematic approach haven't been gaming much prior to this generation.

There are games like Max Payne, Final fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Mass Effect and more.

If you were gaming longer than 5 years, then you would know this, but it seems like you and many other didn't realize this stuff has been going on for decades.

Not keen on the SJW attitude of the devs, but I love Naughty Dog’s games (especially TLOU) too much to pass on it. I don’t care if she’s a lesbian. I just don’t need an agenda shoved in my face and crammed down my throat for the sake of virtue signaling.

Here is the thing, is not like Ellie became "lesbian" out of no where, we known this from left behind DLC and the ending of first game made it perfectly clear if there was going to be a sequel we were going to play as Ellie instead of Joel. Look, I hate this obsession with political correctness as much the next guy but whats also equally annoying to see people considered every little thing as "SJW agenda".

You’re right. We already know she’s lesbian. So I don’t need a trailer for the sequel that wastes a substantial amount of time showing us it again, while lingering on a make-out session. Woo, so edgy Naughty Dog. So brave, so triumphant. How about just show the fucking gameplay mechanics?

Yeah, a lot of this is eye of the beholder stuff. When i think of the stories that i love, none of them come from videogames, but thats me. If others find meaning for their lives in TLOU or Borderlands 2, then thats cool.

And gameplay mediocre?

People still play TLOU today. The multiplayer is still active, yet you want to create this narrative that the gameplay is mediocre?

it isnt a narrative (which is such an over used word of dismissal), it is my experience. If you find it brilliant, then great. But let me ask you this, if tlou 2 plays exactly like 1, will you be disappointed?

Again, you guys are just copying and pasting insults.. I suggest being more original.

GTAIV was the first sort of hollywood-esque thing I ran into. I find FF to be anime aimed at teens, MGS to be crazy and convoluted, Max Payne 3 I couldn’t play for more than a couple of hours....ME was’t linear despite the ending of 3. The player got to participate.

I am not sure what we are arguing about in this paragraph, but you are obviously wrong by all objective measures and weights. :p

Oh so now it's about what YOU ran into.

Looks like you're moving the goalpost because it's clear that you haven't been gaming that long to even be critical of how Sony\Naughty Dog had some type major influence on major AAA titles.

You were wrong about Halo and Gears NOW doing it because Gears started doing it BEFORE The Last of Us.

You haven't played Gears 3 when it was released in 2011. Yes, it was cinematic.

So yes, you're now moving the goalpost in which how YOU find these games to be, but before you were talking about how every was trying to copy the Sony formula.

This is why I tend to shake my head at a lot of people who criticize TLOU because it becomes clear they havne't been gaming for that long at all.

........ That or they don't understand what they're seeing.

I am not sure what we are arguing about in this paragraph, but you are obviously wrong by all objective measures and weights. :p

Last of Us is considered to be one of the best games ever and many people enjoy it
Last of Us multiplayer is still active, something you wouldn't get with mediocre gameplay
Many games were aiming for a cinematic approach well before the Last of Us was created.

Objectively, you're wrong and your goalpost moving proves that.

Thanks for making it clear to me in this post. lol

Here is what you said earlier. You clearly state "The rest of the AA industry is following THIS lead."

How can they follow that lead when games were doing it well before the TLOU?

? What insult?

One being games following the Sony formula.
It's not an original thought, you're merely just repeating what others have said. If you TRULY knew the history about video games, then you would know modern AAA devs are not following the formula of TLOU, neither are their studios. It's a lie and I heard it from people before.

Dealing with your audience at a child-like level buys you a lot of latitude, its the epitome of undemanding. Kids aren't particularly discerning or sophisticated, because they are kids.

Dead wives and murderous revenge plots were good enough for Shakespeare, so I think games can afford to stoop to using similar tropes. Its all in the treatment after all, and games are a difficult medium to work in.

Personally, I don't "play games" with people who are close/important to me. I just try to be myself, at all times.

The only thing I'm not ready for is the onslaught of its fans. I gave the first one a few hours and was unimpressed by the gameplay.
The Gamplay was good. AI was average but that doesn't make it bad gameplay. What was bad about the gameplay in your eyes? Also for when it was released, it was pretty impressive. Which is why it was such a success.
