The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

Could you elaborate? What were you apprehensive before hand and what did the demo do to change your mind?

Just curious.

I was apprehensive about Naughty Dogs ability to make a true game again as opposed to a series of funnels that takes you to the next cut scene or set piece.

Uncharted Drakes Fortune was a flawed masterpiece, with levels designed in a way that cleverly disguised how linear they were and encouraged exploration. The controls were a it sloppy and the gunplay average, but the package came together beautifully. In Uncharted 2 and 3, they kept all the controls and gunplay issues but then made the levels ultra linear and focused on the cut scenes.

I was worried that they'd carry this one step further in the Last of Us, especially after all the interviews with various Naughty Dog representatives talking themselves up as the beacons for story execution in gaming.

But after actually playing the demo, I got that great feeling I had in the original Uncharted again. This game is linear, as most games are, but like Uncharted its not OBVIOUS it's linear. They also find ways to distract you with weapon and item creation and the like. It's really good.

I can't say whether or not enemies take more hits. But Joel can take less hits, and there's less resources for crafting.

I'm going to play on hard.

Hmm, alright, thanks! I think I'm going to try Hard initially. I plan on playing the game on all difficulties like I did with the Uncharted games anyways, but just wasn't sure where to start first.

Due to the nature of the beast I can't say much about The Last Of Us – come back to VideoGamer.com this Wednesday if you want my full thoughts – but this week has seen me start and finish Naughty Dog's latest game.

If you're a regular to the site you may have noticed that my early impressions fell within the realm of being slightly worried about it, going as far as to say it may not be the experience I hoped it would. All I'll say is I was very, very wrong...

Sounds awesome, thanks for the detailed impressions.

In normal, there are more pickups and enemies drop ammo pretty often. In hard, way less of that. In normal there's a combat room and they give you two metal pipes and enough blades to mod one into an instant death machine. In hard, they give you a stick.

haha

Is this game going to be; Bottle, Brick, Shiv, Tape? Or do you guys feel there will be a variety of objects that do similar things?

I am glad we supported this.

I'll admit I was afraid as all-hell with the countdown timer, and despite the massive network cataclysmic strike at 10AM yesterday, at this point, who the heck cares. You've got the demo far earlier than anyone else, that's all that matters in the end.

Naughty Dog is a rock's throw away from our studio, good lads, and one helluva game coming out in a couple weeks.

Cheers
Tank

Thanks Tank! Appreciate the quick response when the servers were wigging out. I've visited ND and was amazed how close SSM was, hopefully my contacts can get me into SSM soon...

But Naughty GODS are perfect. How can you possibly criticize our overlords like so?

lol, that's pretty funny. I like when difficulty modes do stuff like that instead of just turning enemies into bullet sponges.

Anyone here willing to help a gaffer get the demo? I did a bunch yesterday and this morning, but I can't help atm. They would pm you account info and you'd have to log in, boot the disc, and get it on their DL list.

Takes like 6-7 mins tops. :)

Did you play the Jak series? All three were open world/open sandbox. I hope Naughty Dog ditch Uncharted, I am not a big fan of that series.

Plus there nothing wrong with a funnel.

TONS of game use that technique. Especially in the action/shooter genre which is what Uncharted is.

As long as the formula works (which it does!) I am fine with it.

They should put the demo for plus users/non-plus too.. many good things coming from the impresions and not being able to try by myself.. gah!

Yes, I'm of the mind that not every game needs to follow a set of defined rules; all games need to be open world and explorable. I very much enjoy the linear focus of the Uncharted series.

Finally went and pre ordered it.

Haven't played the demo yet, I have way too much faith in ND and know it will be a great game ( if not incredible,). Hope there is a public demo in a few days, doubt it.

For me to be excited about a new Uncharted, ND would either have to completely reinvent how they do traversal/platforming or ditch it entirely. I just cannot stand it any more. Every game does it exactly the same way, and it's the same boring shit it's always been. But now, I can't stomach it anymore. Just no.

This is why I couldn't play FUSE, soon as I saw that samey shit in the demo, it's literally how they introduce you to the game, no... I just turned it off.

I agree.

I can see this getting Kazified for E3

Haha, holy fuck that'd be awesome. People would hate that concept, but I'd love it

they wouldn't do that, they'd just give you sound-o-vision, you have to tap the click button but you have like a click bar or something to keep you from spamming click the whole time. or it would be ineffectual.

as a bonus all sounds would also provide visual cues, like lights or something.

No one bit. Probably not wanting to be spoiled (or disappointed) if either are right haha.

Joel would be too smart for that. It must be long past dangerous. Actual science (afaik) could be used to support either outcome the devs desired. So doesn't have to be a plot hole.

No offense man but I don't think anyone wants to bite. I havent even read the spoilers and I can figure out what you are implying, if you know something I don't please cut it out.

Edit: I see its tagged now, thanks.

Considering how this is a post apocalyptic, depressing sort of game, you really need to go into this assuming no one lives.

That way, whoever DOES survive, you'll end up being pleasantly surprised.

Can it be said this GOW:A disc exclusivity is a Season Pass type way to disincentivize someone from reselling a mediocre game?

I dunno, the demo was OK, but I wasn't blown away by any stretch. It looked great, and the combat felt meaty, I'm just not sure about the heavy controls.

I have faith in Naughty Dog, but that demo tempered my expectations more than anything.

Meh.

You guys will get a boost in sales as well imo. Ive been playing a little GoWA (redboxed it at first) and so far it is pretty good.

Yeah, it was meant to be tagged, sorry. It's really just an observation on my part that struck me as odd but probably has no bearing.

For the record, I have NOT read the spoilers so we're good.

So someone whon hasn't seen any footage since the E3 extended demo, how spoilerific is this demo?
There are just too many good impressions in this thread which is tempting me to play the demo but I don't want to spoil the story.....decisions, decisions.

No story at all. You get the snippiest of snippets of minor character relation and a building in the distance is their destination. Nothing spoilery at all.

I think it barely touches the story, it's basically an introduction to the mechanics of TLoU, good as a training ground too, especially the last room, avoid the cutscene that plays when you finish the last room though, people say it's spoilerific but I haven't watched it.

I'm not sure about Troy's opinion on the matter, but I can be inside you, if you would like?

Do you mind if I wear a mahou shoujo outfit?

No spoilers, just skip the trailer that comes after. Didn't watch it but I assume there are spoilers.

Really enjoyed the demo, though it was a but too short. Tense, pretty, atmospheric and solid. Everything just felt meaty, tactile and polished. Have to say though, a PS4 version would have been even more amazing.

I now have a dummy account! Does anyone have a few minutes to put the demo onto it for me? I'll PM you the details. :)

Pretty please?

It would be great if some kind soul could help Leeness, since I was unable to.

I'm not saying he's wrong but I feel that there's no real reason to try and downplay the graphical significance of the TLoU just because he feels that it's not up to snuff with HIGH end PC standards.

I dont want to debate here, but You should see how other multiplatform games from the last two years look not only on highest settings, but on Low or Medium. You will be surprised. Its not about high end gaming at all.

Guys, would anyone be so kind as to steer me in the direction of a well-played run-through of the demo? i.e. good quality video, competent player, etc.

Thanks!
