The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

My brother told me about that. (I let him play the demo to give me some non spoiler impressions since I'm on a blackout.) He also said a bottle works better than the brick? Is that true or do they both work the same?

I didn't check if the bottles were better than the brick, but it sounds about right. The brick isn't loud enough as shattering glass

One thing that really stood out to me was in the final section I was running away from a runner and picked up a 2x4 and flew straight into combat. The animation for all that put together was so smooth, felt so natural. I loved the whole demo and can't wait for the full game. I will wear this demo out before then!

Good to hear!

Agreed, like pushing vines out of the way in the jungle. It was the overuse of it (where it made no sense) that drove me nuts.

Joel's animation is actually really incredible. There are some contextual animations in the environment, for example he will put his arm up over his head when walking under a stream of running water, but there's almost no wall touching lol.

It's interesting that his animation changes when he moves inside a building. His stance changes, like he's apprehensive. He puts his hands out to the sides like he's ready for something to happen. (this might only be because they're in a dilapidated and off-kilter building)

Then there is the god-tier legendary crouch animations. This is when he touches stuff, while leaning against or moving along cover. An interesting aspect is that, if he is in cover with Ellie, he will move around her or even shield her if huddled close together.

And all the animation changes again when you're in combat. The sprint becomes faster, and Joel will push off walls while running past or lean up against corners. Even the crouching animation is different in combat, how Joel handles his weapon or takes cover. It's pretty damn awesome.

Especially when you consider Commander Shepard cannot even holster a weapon in ME3 because they didn't have the memory for those animations.

well said!

Drake in UC3 was so damn annoying. He would constantly switch arms and touch walls, even when he was too far away and would only touch it with his finger tips. It actually got my dad and sister to comment asking if he was always drunk, and they never really pay very close attention to what I'm playing.

So yeah, luckily it is much better. Both tomb raider and this seem to be doing well with contextual cover.

I think that was mostly because they just didn't have time to polish the animation to the degree that they usually do. We know that it was rushed in the end because they set a date really early and had to hit it. Thankfully with TLoU that didn't happen. Even when they set a date they were allowed to push it back to make sure that they were happy with the end product.

Imo the cover system is a little raw. I like it for the most part, but things could use some tweaking, especially near corners.

I also don't particularly like how Joel holds a weapon (pistols) while aiming. Something about the OTSV bothers me... something about it looks too mechanical/weird. It's really easy to spot when looking at an enemy holding a weapon (pistols) at Joel. The stance is... not very natural looking. Looks gamey.

Small complaint, but yeah... it is what it is.

So the demo is accessed via the disc, not a code or anything in the box? Sweet. Will be renting tonight.

Yep thats what alot of us did. I think I will still end up buying Acension because it's cheaper now and it looks kind of good. But for now yea I redboxed it and the demo is it's own "game" so you don't need the disc to play it.

Just a warning alot of people are starting to catch on so if I were you I would put a hold on it on online so it's in your name.

Dude, that knee to the head needs to be gif'd so hard. Yikes.

You dont need the disc to run the demo

I stood under some random waterfall in the building, but there was no reaction. It felt incredibly outdated/"last" gen. It's weird how I will hold ND to this higher standard, but considering all the nuances they are doing, something like non-reaction to water is noticeable in terms of the experience. Not that it is a gamechanger

I really hope this gets some amazing PS4 port with incredible updates, but I doubt it. I do however, really want a sequel on next gen consoles. I don't want to finish with the genre, as I think it's a fantastic genre that is an incredible example of a straight-up game that manages to mix in awesome cinematics. There is so much more they can do with it, and I hope it isn't a one-off title. Just for the LoU to exist on the PS3 just feels odd and unnatural to me.

I thought I should add: when Joel is near cover, like a desk-- if you aim over the desk, his aiming stance animation is angled to point over the desk.

Yes, it gives sales to the game now. But the demo should be made publicly available around release day, but ND say they have no plans to do it.

OK yeah, that's odd. I figure this game is going to have even better word of mouth when people get their hands on it. It's not like Halo or CoD or even Uncharted, something that's a known quantity. They should get this demo get out there, let people see and feel what the fuss is all about.

Just wanted to know, did Uncharted 1 had a pre release demo?

Don't hurt me, but I have to ask: Are you using crouch? =P

You probably are, but it's definitely possible to clear the whole last section without being spotted. NearRivers posted his own video of how to do it earlier in the thread:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPod7awcUGU

This is exactly what I wanted to see, thanks NearRivers!

Yeah, I subscribed to that guy. Good video. Gets to the point, speaks well... isn't annoying.

Thanks guys! This thread moves so fast I didn't think anyone would see it. I've sunk so many hours into this demo already, I really can't wait for release. I just wanted to point out how impressed I was that you can complete the whole demo without ever firing a bullet. That seems so unusual nowadays.

Not sure I understand. We don't need the disc? What do you need then?

Someone said that the bottles floating in the water don't react to Joel but they do.
Ellie plays with her knife when she's bored.

Does she take the time to put it away if you start to run off? Would be awesome if she did because usually when someone is doing an idle animation and you start to leave them they just suddenly stop and whatever they were messing with disappears and they start running like they jumped into a new animation.

Sorta weird that you can still upgrade listen mode distance even with it disabled. It's the only thing I can find enough for in the demo to upgrade.
