The Last of Us Part II first hands-on previews, screenshots, and gameplay

It looks good but I can't help but be disappointed still. It seems clear now that the E3 demo was once again just smoke and mirrors to deceive people as it was scripted AF and the final game won't play like that. The problem is that this is still among the best the industry can offer but I'm getting tired of the fact that developers/publishers always try to deceive us with showing something much more impressive than what they can deliver. I don't understand this even, the people who follow these videos are mostly the hardcore segment of gamers and they will spot the differences so why are they still doing this? Anyway, I won't support this and will only buy a used version.

Yea it was wishful thinking. Just yesterday I was saying how Last of Us 2 doesn't even look like it should be possible on current hardware. After seeing these previews I can tell we've been misled especially when considering the vertical slice of the E3 demo. I think it'll still be a fantastic game and I'm still gonna buy it, but it's not as urgent as it was.

Edit:
Watched a few more of the videos. I think a big part of this could be comparing a scripted E3 demo to actual people playing it. Maybe that's why it's lost some of it's luster for me. Gonna rewatch these videos when I get in front of my TV.

Fuuuuuu. This game is another level. Naughty Dog games are like what Paul Thomas Anderson movies are to the world of film. Now if you aint seen There Will Be Blood I dont know what you're doing with yo lyfe.

Looks great and I will play it day one.

That's said I don't get why PS fans praising it like it's best thing ever lol. It's more Tlou, just looks better thanks to new technology and hardware.

I'm sorry if you have poor sight

So you can't explain.

I will, because I can actually tell what's happening.

It's clear that the game was not downgraded.

People don't realize that clothing can appear less detailed based on the lighting.

Bottom Left and Right are taken from gameplay footage released today.

Others are taken from E3 2018 gameplay trailer.

The only spot where Ellie's clothing appears the most detailed is in the top middle.

This is likely from you exploring the area and it has different lighting.

Again, it's clear that your clothing reacts different in light.

Compare the Trailer released Tuesday to the E3 gameplay trailer with the guy in the raincoat. The scenes are very similar and they look the same. Of course, may not be the same area, but very similar.

Then you have a woman in a raincoat fighting near fire.

Compare that to the gameplay trailer released Tuesday.

Yes, same level of detail.

Finally you have night time in the forest.

From Tuesday

From E3

Not the exact same spot, but the same environment.

No proof of a graphical downgrade.

The tech looks incredible, but I can't help but feel it will be wasted on a boring game like the first.
This is my takeaway as well. But I wish everyone who is genuinely excited for this a happy time once this is out :D (Naughty Dog games aren't for me, I guess. Uncharted 2 was the last game I liked from them).

From Vandal Spain in regard of animations/general quality

Looks like mostly subtle adjustments to the existing gameplay.

More verticality in traversal. Prone stealth. A dodge. 2 new enemy types seen so far.

So every enemy in the game has a name. They use it when talking to each other and they might scream it when you kill someone.
Apparently relationships too. In one of the videos (I forget which) the player killed a woman and one of the mobs shouted "That's my wife!".
Combat is going to be grim in this game... Heh.

You basically agreed with him.

People screamed downgrade with Spider-Man due to a change of the environment, his suit and the lighting.

What we have seen thus far, nothing indicated a downgrade in graphics.

My point wasn't about graphics downgrade. I think the game looks gorgeous as it is.

Well yeah, i was coming from a thread in era where there was more than one person to mention downgrade.

Fair enough, I didn't consider that possibility lol.

Any QTE`s instantly kill the immersion for me, TLOU/GoW/Spider-man/Uncharted... all so similar because of this dumb mechanic

I actually like a lot of QTEs, when featured in some of the most gameplay focused action games around: like Vanquish, RE4, Bayonetta.

If you want to take control away to show stuff that is even more over the top, then it's just fun.

If you have a low level of baseline gameplay, and then do QTEs for something slightly more complicated, then it's just boring.

Game looks very good, but not as choreographed as the reveal game play. Looks like The Last of Us II, no real surprises either way at this point.

Someone had to start the propaganda machine and "likes" from the typical green team salties mad asf their system of choice could never create masterpieces such as this series lol 😂 😂 😂 We see youb👀and we ❤️you 😁

I don't know who that is, but then why can't we see anything from that in these videos? I watched again the E3 demo and it's so obvious now that it was just bullshit, though I hoped that maybe ND could deliver. It was totally scripted. I hate CG trailers but at least when I'm watching those I don't get my hopes up that the game will be like that. This new practice is disgusting.

Give us a break already.

That entire animation suite for modifying your weapons, complete with tools, supplies, and a workbench.

Bruh.

I dont know what to say to you man. It looks flat, like they switched off lightning and some other atmospheric effects. Like it was in Watch Dogs.

Some textures look very low res and the fire looks hilariously bad. The animation looks jerky in some places, especially enemies, how they walk, turn etc.

It doesn't look impressive at all, far from it actually. Or do you think it looks above other games?

Rdr 2 looks much better to me for example

Textures appear that way based on lighting. That's why I took several different examples from the E3 demo, and you can clearly see more detail when she's outside compared to when she's inside of the beauty shop.

The lighting is a different time of day.

If you look at different scenes from the trailer released on Tuesday, you can see the same level of quality textures.

Looks pretty solid, however some sections gave me RDR2 vibes.

Just hope they can deliver on the narrative, and don't focus 100% on the LGBT flag the game seems to be currently wearing.

The first one had a pretty dope setting and narrative. Don't throw that away for LGBT flagship.

Fucking hell, you can cut that atmosphere with a knife. The gameplay looks so much more intense with the dog tracking and the new movement additions.
I loved the bit about NPCs calling out each others names, or reacting emotionally when their friends and dogs are slain.

So, NPCs have names, and relationships between each other, influencing AI behavior?

Getting a little Dwarf Fortress vibe here... :)

By the way, The Last Of Us feels so exhausting in a very negative way. It's another over the top dramatic, violent for the sake of being shocking and basically and edgy angsty fest that feels incredibly boring and predictable. The protagonists look like total crap too, both metaphorically and literally.

I much more prefer the overall tone, the gameplay and the setting of Uncharted 4.

You can thank Neil.

As someone who could care less if they wanted to focus on the LGBT or not, I kind of hope they go all in just to see the rage around these parts :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Reposting here too since i don't see nearly enough gifs
Good boys can follow your farts
giphy.gif

Also they can fuck up your new tattoo and stop you from running away when someone wants to know what it means and why you have it.
giphy.gif

You can also dodge or get slapped now, even moldy people attacks.
giphy.gif

And most importantly of all, you can jump run and crawl just like Venom Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series, this is punished Ellie
giphy.gif

Example of Ellie touching the floor with her nipples like Solid Snake does, she doesn't try to fuck it like old snake tho...

"Propaganda machine" - quite ironic in this case, don't you think? Well, my friend I have to tell you something. It is possible to criticize a Sony exclusive without being an Xbox fanboy. I'm not a fanboy of any company. I have a PS4 since launch, it's my main platform and have almost all exclusives, while I've only bought an XO last year just for the couple if games that are not on PS4. You are just projecting your own fanboyness, since you can't see the problem, though based on your comment you are like 12, so I'm just wasting time answering you anyway.

No I am 9, you were close 😂Edgy response bro, you got me. Your free live membership for a year will be incoming shortly. Good job soldier.

And of course you can criticize Sony exclusives. I already did criticizing tlou 2 for having no mp. I also criticized the shit out of SFV 😁

I'd agree that it's not as polished as then. Although I'm more happy that all of the dynamic melee mechanics and contextual animations are very much still here.

That's because it was probably just an in-engine render with a bit more cinematic scripting to make it look dramatic. What we're seeing today still looks great of course.

I hated the gameplay of the first and found the story very generic. This looks more of the same.
Will still play though :)

What I'm gonna say is NOT a popular view but fuck it, here goes:

I think many hard core Gamers suffer shame over their hobby and when a game like this comes along (serious and with presumed importance and meaningfulness) the folks inclined to be ashamed by playing story based video games rush to say, 'See?!? DO YOU SEE?!? Our hobby is not for children! This is serious business and these games are ART and they are MEANINGFUL!!!'

And BECAUSE of this, a lot of games that present themselves as adult and mature and serious get way more of a pass than they should, from both Gamers and the gaming press. A good 90% of the Games lauded for story and character development would be rejected by Hollywood (this view based simply on my subjective comparison of what Hollywood currently offers up in terms of story/character compared to what games offer up) and yet, many of us Gamers claim that Shakespeare himself has returned and he's working at Rockstar or Naughty Dog.

And I take issue with this because I love the medium of games, both what Games are and what they can be. But I feel they will NEVER reach their actual artistic potential if we don't call out the bullshit that- when accepted and praised- actually stunts game development's advancement towards more genuinely mature, adult, emotional, and intellectually meaningful games.

NOTE: I haven't played TLOU2 and it may be simply wonderful. Naughty Dog is prob the very best execution developer in the history of the medium, so I'm sure- if nothing else- it is going to be a FUCKING PHENOMENAL treat to play in that regard. And who knows: this may be the game that CLAIMS to be important and artistic and actually is! My mind is open. And I do like what Druckman has said about killing dogs and killing in general in TLOU2: being something you don't need to do but you've been trained to do so you don't even question it and when you discover you never HAD to do it it makes you question your own person. If that works, that's cool!

However, it is important to make sure- before heaping praise- that we are able to tell if most of us rush in and start shooting w/out thinking BECAUSE:

a- it says something about the human condition
OR
b-because it says something about how we've been trained to play VIDEO GAMES over the years.

If it turns out to be 'b' but the press tells us it's 'a' (because let's face it, 'a' is a better story), therein lies my issue.

game looks better then ever for me. what was shown before it was scripted it was made to be that and look that it. all do that. now with real random gameplay we could see how gameplay really works. before it was made as movie not game, but its better now because we can do all that stuff in real gameplay not just some cutscenes , and thats even better. it will make gameplay awesome with all those smart AI and dogs , other stuff.
