The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

Ya, 2012 was not a good year for my mental health. Went a bit manic depressive and just started buying games the day they came out that I didn't even plan to play.

I still have Halo 4 in the plastic wrap. $60 down the drain, etc.

This year I'm trying to be far more careful about that, and so far so good for sure. I've spent less than $1000 so far this year, but I've still played plenty of great games at launch. And without resorting to piracy, of course.

Ever tried Gamefly? I used it for most of this year's releases and it's worked out very well for me. As long as you open an account by early next week, they should send you a copy.

I knew this was going to get great scores. Uncharted 3 left me thinking that a possible 4/5 or 9/10 could happen. But I'm pleased they're giving it perfect scores. Nothing really tops the storytelling and game play mechanics.

I reserved a copy from NewEgg for around $45 like a year ago.

I wish someone would have smacked some sense into me years ago.

I have horror stories of some of the games I've purchased for $60 this generation. Off the top of my head:

Medal of Honor: Warfighter
Damnation
X-Blades
Onechanbara
Blacksite: Area 51
Shadowrun
Lair
Time Crisis 4 w/ Lightgun ($100? IIRC)
The Force Unleashed
Spectral Force 3
Culdcept Saga
The Last Remnant
Infinite Undiscovery
Star Ocean 4

and many others. And those are just the bad games that I spent full price on, not even to mention the average or good games that I just wasn't interested in playing.

Take Lair off the list. It was all we had...

You are dead to me.

Gamefly is responsible for my 1000 Achievement points in Hannah Montanah, TMNT, Terminator, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and several other games because they wouldn't send me anything I actually wanted to play. I cancelled my account after a few months. After 3 months of owning a Gamefly account and a proper Top 10 Request list setting up (of course with my most wanted games at the top) I never received a single game that I wanted. That was 3 years ago, though, they may be better now.

Gamefly doesn't rent PC games, though, so it's entirely useless to me at this point. The Last of Us is the only console game I'm playing in 2013. PS3 going back in the closet after that.

oh god, more "citizen kane of gaming" bullshit. Great.

I'm well prepared for this game to thoroughly unimpress me. I tend to be at odds with what the gaming press considers "revolutionary". If this isn't a safe, linear, "cinematic" zombie shooter I will be legitimately surprised.

Guys it's done.... I just bought a PS3 again to play this bad boy. I couldn't resist it any longer.

I am soooo gonna regret spending that money but fuck it. Do what makes ya happy is my motto :D

Someone please tell me I made the right choice to make me fell better :P

You just spent quite a bit of money for one ten to fifteen hour game that you might replay maybe once or twice in the future.

It was a terrible choice.

Probably should have at least waited till E3 considering the game doesn't even come out until the 14th.

PS3 will most likely be price cut..

The demo thread convinced me that I need to buy a headset for the game as well. I only have crappy HDTV speakers. From reading a bit I ordered the Pulse Elite but it will take a month (!) for it to arrive :(

Ouch! I almost bought the Afterglows today but decided to do more researching.

YOLO motherfucker.

Welcome back to the revolution.

Don't worry, Last of Us can't be the citizen Kane of gaming, since Metroid Prime is

so headphones lovers please recommend the best in the $100 range to fully enjoy the sounds of this game, wireless would be better

30 days to get the benefit of sale.
You should be fine for the E3 PS3 price cut.

you made the right choice. i highly doubt this is the last big game for ps3 anyways. there will be many more exclusives for ps3 to come this year and next year before it starts to die so you should be happy that you get to play a potentially great game and ctahc up on any that you may have missed.

Hmm.. games this gen I regret paying full price.

DOA4
Final Fantasy XIII
Fable 2
Infamous
Halo 3: ODST
Resident Evil 5
Assassin's Creed 3
Rockstars Table Tennis

That's about it really.

There shouldn't be any regrets so long as you make a conscious effort to buy more exclusives for the system instead of basing your whole purchase around one game. There's Beyond, rain, Puppeteer and Gran Turismo 6 still to come this year, if any of those take your fancy.

..that kind of makes me proud that I didn't play it.
It has a lot of redeeming qualities and some interesting ideas, but is a failure of a cohesive game.

Similar to Far Cry 3 in a lot of ways, but Far Cry 3 was a considerably more entertaining product on the whole than FC2.

Infamous?

Regarding FF13: I regretted it for the first 20 hours, then I was happy.. sort of.

it may also prove to be gaming’s Citizen Kane moment

Yeah, I dunno just didn't click with me. The story and characters were just a huge turnoff, not really a fan of Sucker Punch games in general.

I enjoyed all of Final Fantasy XIII up until the point that I realized the plot wasn't going to pay off in any meaningful way.

So basically, I enjoyed the entire game up until I killed the final boss and then completely regretted playing the game at all. I despise it.

Funny thing is, though, the same thing happened for FFXII (great gameplay, absolutely no payoff in the plot) but I'm not nearly as disgusted by that game as I am by 13. I haven't figured out why, yet.

I'm willing to accept that my disposition towards FFXIII is slightly irrational, but as far as I'm concerned that game fucked me with no lube.

:lol

Also, I just realized it's the Bioshock Infinite pre-release crew all up in this ass.

:)
