Excited to be buying this today :)

REALLY excited about the thought of playing SC on PC as well. So glad the moment is almost upon us.

Echoing everybody else. You'll be fine without them.

About the whole missable quests... after a very brief glance at the faq Aeana mentioned, wouldn't it be possible to simply do each optional quest asap and follow the faq for hidden quests ? I mean there doesn't seem to be a lot of hidden ones.
Well it could still ruin a little of the pleasure for some, and there surely will be missed optionals nonetheless, I'm good for that, but it seems manageable to just stick the faq reading to hidden.
No ?

No ?

It depends on how much you want to avoid missing. You'll need to do more than that to get collectables and maximize BP points.

I can live with a more character-driven story and gobs of text, but one thing that will make or break whether or not I bite on this game is how well realized the world is and the variety of towns and locations to explore. Those are two of the most important elements for me.

For example, I enjoy the DQ series because of its charming world and NPC's with their own little lives carrying on.

Does this game deliver in those areas?

Oh it sure does, one of its biggest strenghts actually, NPC's dialogue changes as you advance in the game.

NPC dialogue changes after nearly every major (and often minor) event in-game. You'll find tons of characters who have their own personal little drama unfold through the course of the entire game.

That's there for you if you so choose to run around and chat with NPCs. Making up a situation here, but something like having an instance where you talk to a family struggling to make ends meet throughout the game, keep talking to them, and by the end finding out the dad/mom got a new well-paying job is pretty common.

It's the sort of series where you eventually have a list of favorite NPCs because of their little stories.

Thanks, everyone. Sounds like it might be up my alley. Are there a number of towns with their own distinct flavor/culture, or is this game mostly centered around one major town?

As you progress through the game you visit different regions within the area so one town is more idustrially advanced/focused, the beginning town is a small peaceful place, the capital is a giant place filled with appropriately grand buildings, the coastal town is appropriately themed and so on.

Looking forward to this a lot.

Buying this as soon as it goes live on steam!

Quick question from a first time player: Does the game have a reference list with regards to the main story? As in, if I put the game down for a few weeks, is there an in-menu synopsis of major events and what's currently active?

I definitely want to help with sales, but I'll be playing sporadically due to school responsibilities.

Yeah, you can check what you need to do on the Bracer Notebook

I'm so looking forward to this.

My only completed save is from the US PSP version so I need something to carry over for SC (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :))

So is this a traditional turn based battle system? I just stopped played ni no kuni and need wash that horrible battle system.

I haven't played this, but I've watched a bunch of videos of battles to try to get a sense of how it works, and it look's like a step between Shadow Hearts Covenant and a full on strategy RPG. It's turn-based and you can see the coming turn order for everyone in the battle. Distance and positioning matter because there are area-of-effect abilities and characters have movement ranges, but unlike a typical strategy RPG, it doesn't seem like you can move freely before or after performing actions. There's a Move command to move freely, but it uses up the turn, otherwise it looks like characters only move in a straight line towards the spot they attack from. It looks like there are character specific special attacks (Craft) that execute instantly as well as magic (Arts) that has a casting time and seems to work off a materia-like system. There's also a super move (S-Craft) that characters can use outside of their turn. Along the turn order display there are symbols next to certain turns that seem to give powerups for the characters who take that turn, like free healing or a guaranteed critical, so if you can do something that will change your turn order, like a delay from an Arts or an interrupt form an S-Craft, you can steal that turn from the enemy and claim its bonus.

Anyone who's actually played this before, please feel free to correct me if I've gotten something wrong.

Hmm, I was wondering if the GOG version would have bonuses like this. I guess it would be silly to triple-dip just for this, but...

Quickly rivaling with Ys: The Oath in Felghana for the game I've purchased the most times. Well played, XSEED. Well played.

Seriously. This is literally not even a double dip for me... it's a triple dip (Physical PSP, PSN download on Vita, and now Steam)

Eh, screw it, I'm buying it on Gog then.

Those bonus makes it more tentative anyway

If only GOG redeemed on Steam :(

I hope everyone's enjoyed their ride upon the Galaxy Express 999 and have fun playing
with
TitS. This is your conductor, signing off~

Now eat an ice-cream cone and have it disappear creepily into the inky blackness that is your head.

(It's a Galaxy Express 999 thing.)

;)

I'm worried, however, about the apparent "wordiness" of the game. I don't mind really slow pacing (I like the introduction part of Suikoden V, for example), but verbose Japanese games tend to repeat information and over-explain everything. Virtue's Last Reward is the most recent game I played that drove me crazy with these.

You... might have some issues with Trails, then? It's definitely guilty of this to an extent, though it comes across less as over-explaining and more as just... realistic explaining, I guess? Like, if you were to go get a job hunting monsters in real life (were such a thing to exist, of course), there'd be training involved, right? And so there is here.

It doesn't feel extraneous, exactly, but it can be mildly tedious at times (especially if something really cool is coming up and you just want to see it transpire!). It's absolutely worth sticking through, however, as there is most definitely a payoff waiting for you at the end -- a payoff that wouldn't be nearly as impactful without all the buildup.
