The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC |OT| More Olivier Than Ever

Finally getting around to starting FC...

I heard talk of some kind of 100% guide. Where would I find such a thing?

GameFAQs has an html one that is 100% for the important books and bp points with virtually no spoilers. It is missing 2 of the liberl news that pop up in the second town at the start of chapter 2 which you have to buy before going to ruan, though those are only needed for an achievement so its not a huge loss if you miss them. There may be other better guides online but that's the one I used.

One of the things that struck me when I wandered around Rolent for the 1st time in SC was that I remembered who most of the random NPC's around the town actually were, they're not just sources of information or funny lines, but you actually get the impression that the characters have lives beyond the Player Characters story.

Yeah, it was the same for me. I was really surprised at how easily I remembered who most of those random NPCs were, even four years after having played the first game. The writing is really sharp for them, so it winds up being very easy to remember who they all are.

Question: There is no way I can get through the 70 hours between now and when Cold Steel comes out. Will I have SC spoiled for me in any meaningful way if I play Cold Steel first when it comes out (since it's only 35 hours it seems, that's a little more doable) then SC afterwards as a longer term thing?

There is one plot point in SC that is just absolutely blown out of the water by the very premise of Cold Steel. That was true for anyone getting into the series in Cold Steel in Japan, though.

I don't think it's too bad beyond that one plot point.

40 hours in, still on chapter 8. Not many JRPGs can go this long without feeling incredibly padded, but SC does just that... Nothing feels like a half-arsed decision by the developer to just waste the players time, and I appreciate that.

Yeah, those were really great quests. The hotel one in particular was really unique and engaging. I had so much fun with that one.

I already went to
Zeiss
and then remembered that I forgot to talk to someone. Loaded an earlier save, went to talk to them, boom new quest. Had to replay some parts but it was well worth it.

It can be a pain for completionists, but the fact that there are so many things that can potentially happen without you really makes the world feel alive.

I dunno which is worse the super specific window side quest that you may not even notice were there until its already failed on the board, or the hidden ones that require you to go somewhere completely random ahead of the game sending you there/after you've already been there for story reasons.

PC version can be patched to fix bugs and translation issues, has higher resolution options and slightly better graphics, and the us release got the few psp exclusive features back ported. Unless you want to play on the go pc is the definitive version. Heck even on the highest setting the games so easy to run any laptop can do it fine.
Ugh, the hitching got to me on an Intel HD5500. It will still be far superior to what a PSP can hope to output, but clearing up whatever issue is making Trails in the Sky not use dedicated GPUs (something to do with routing all video output through the integrated?) will smooth it out fully.

If you want to make sure you do everything, you can start by always checking the board in the Bracer Guild.

Done with a side quest? Report it and check the board.
Done with a story quest? Check the board.
Start a new Chapter? Check the board.

On top of that, talk to everyone, everywhere, all the time, forever. There are non-board side quests.

Or use a guide, I guess? That usually ruins my momentum, though.

I love the quests you have to discover on your own. They help to make the world feel alive, and it feels more natural that not everyone would take their troubles to the board. It also usually makes sense why. For example, in Chapter 1
the lighthouse quest not being on the board makes perfect sense. Vogt is a really stubborn old man, he's not going to go ask the bracers for help on his own. But if someone happens to come along, well that's different. I also really appreciate how you'll only find that quest if you went out of your way to drop by and say hello. It fits perfectly with the quest that's all about helping an old man out and I'd like it less if it was just posted on the board.
Trails has the best sidequests in gaming, only rivaled by the Yakuza series.

Agreed. Both series are excellent in that regard. Between this, Yakuza 5, and Cold Steel in the next two months we're going to be spoiled on sidequest quality.

Gotta agree on the side quests being good, there are some hilarious ones. Although I only found one hidden sidequest on Chapter 1 (not using a guide) even though I talk a lot to NPCs. Did all the board ones.

Also completed Chapter 4.

The dream sequence was so well done. Loved the development Schera and Estelle have undergone. Dat Luciola tho.

Loved the fact that at the airship you get extra dialogue from the characters that participated in the boss battle.

I can't even recall when if ever a new quest popped up on the board when completing a different one in FC. I know there are hidden and sequential quests that open up when you finish one, but they don't end up on the board. As far as I've seen, the board is only updated when you progress through main story beats. So I think you're pretty safe if you concentrate on just clearing the board before continuing the game as normal, since "time" doesn't move on until you progress the plot.

Still a good idea to pop in, report and collect your Mira, especially early on when it's pretty scarce.

How?? Just starting chapter 3 and I'm on 31.

You're probably right. Though it seemed like 2 new monster quests appeared after completing the first 2 monster quests. It's probably just convenient timing, though.

Well, I'm only 5 hours in and I think I should put it off cause I'm IN LOVE with this game and I should plY THE FIRST ONE BEFORE THIS ONE!!!

That example is actually fine, same with the one that starts by going to check in on Nial at the end of chapter 1/start of chapter 2. Both of those make sense to be hidden quest, I'm thinking of a few in fc that have small windows and require a player to prematurely go somewhere that feels like a story will take them eventually but doesn't.

I'm at the Hotel Investigation quest in Ruan and I can't finish the quest cause the prompt to select the questions just vanished after talking with the old man about the bell ringing.

Any Idea how to fix this? Can't continue the game :(

Save in a new slot, then try loading that save.
If that doesn't work, close the game, then start it up again and load that save.
If that doesn't work, revert to a previous save.

I hope you have multiple saves.

Thanks for the tips, didn't work... but, I just discovered that selecting a answer still works with using a mouse instead of the controller, so I will just do that for the duration of the quest :)

Exact same thing happened to me at a different point in the game. It's only happened once in 41 hours, though.

Onto the final chapter now. Looks like I won't be playing another JRPG for a while, because it'll no doubt compare unfavourably to this
(unless I revisit VI/IX, perhaps).

5 & 8 the standouts so far.

Have to decide what the best way to go for more Legend of Heroes is as a European PC player with a PS3 somewhere but no aversion to (re)buying a PS Vita. I'm just worried about location moreso than anything else... EU just seems to get everything from everyone late.

Yeah, for some bizarre reason some of the choices actually look like (maybe they actually are) image files rather than text. The exchange stuff in the casino is the same, and for whatever reason you can't select those with anything other than the mouse. It is a known issue, though I've got no idea if it can actually be fixed.

I'm not sure what's going on there, when it happens it seems to switch to a different font. I think talking to Agate and then going back to the other characters fixed it for me, at least temporarily.

Back when FC originally came out, I was under the impression that SC was announced to follow a year later. And even back then I thought after FC's ending: "Holy shit, how am I supposed to wait a year for the sequel?" Ahahahahahaha... :(

Chapter 8 spoilers:
I wanted to exterminate the Abyss Worms in Tratt Plains for exp, but after being completely destroyed about a dozen times, it seems like it wasn't meant to be.

Now you need to wait four years to get the TRUE Trails experience.
And you don't know if it'll be four years either! Could be two years, could be longer, could be never. Crunching through Japanese MIGHT have been faster and let one immediately move to Zero and Azure.

But at least the game was out there. At absolute we can literally ask "so what happened next?" and get an answer. We can know whether or not (FC spoilers for crazies braving the thread)
when, how, and if Estelle and Joshua ever find each other again
while good luck finding out if (Mega Man Legends)
Mega Man gets off the moon.
