The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC |OT| More Olivier Than Ever

This Renne girl in chapter 3 is awfully suspicious. She's way too perceptive, her design is too unique, and they're spending an ton of content on her. She even has unique lines and events when you go to every store in Grancel before dropping her off at the guild!

Currently in chapter 3 and thinking the exact same thing lol.

Will be getting around to beating Chapter 8 again today. I'm still pretty annoyed at the way I got screwed out of doing a couple of quests. I do like the Chapter as a whole still though. On one hand the chapter itself is REALLY padded. On the other, it has the best sidequest in the game bar none.

That quest
to free the academy was REALLY cool. Using Analece and Kurt was neat, and the infiltration, scouting and follow through was awesome. I wish there were more quests like it in the game, it was SO GOOD!

Spoilers for promo material past SC, not ingame spoilers
She's on the god damned box art of The 3rd, as soon as I saw her I recognized her. I only knew a couple of things about her, but the fact that she's present on the box of the third game meant to me that she had to be really important.

Somewhat similiar experience for me

I saw her image when I was looking at who the new playable characters in SC and TC were so even though I initially didn't know her actual role I knew she was more then she appeared

The estimate for EU is January 29th sadly. Different publisher.
But the Dec 15th date for US isn't confirmed yet either and isn't looking too likely unless XSEED announces something soon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0116W3L4C/

Didn't know we were getting it later but I'm actually ok with that. Probably went be finished with SC by mid December and then there's Yakuza 5.

Not to mention being the only character other than Estelle to have a full size nendoroid.

On the subject of SC's Chapter 3 for people who've finished it:

It still makes me laugh how much HP Renne has when you're escorting her back from the villa the first time. At least Alba had his lowered so he didn't look too suspicious. Renne, though? http://abload.de/img/2015-11-09_00002hbrxg.jpg Strongest totally ordinary 11 year old in Zemuria.

TBF perhaps
Alba isn't physical strong just a master manipulator with rare/unique orbament powers. Just finished chapter 3

Chapter 8 complete! Thread's going really fast now, at least for me. Major spoilers ahead:

Of the unique three side-quests in this part, the Ruan mission stands out. Glibert is this duology's ultimate joke character, so good even Campanella has to make fun of him. Single best enemy craft in terms of humor and annoyance! Being able to experience some of Black Fang's infiltration mojo is fun, and the bulk of the quest's great for leveling any stragglers (like Zane and Schera for me) coming right out of Chapter 7. I love almost as much how the game convinces you to double-check each region for hidden events like this. Obviously there aren't quests like this in Bose or Grancel, but you know only big, big stuff happens there, and the Elmo quest (not very hidden at all) indicates you should return to Ruan at some point. There's also Sting's hint in Ravennue to climb each Tetracylic Tower again to fight the accessory enemies atop, which gave me a reason to circle around the country after finishing the last quest in Rolent (which ended a la King Penguin in a way).

It's padding that didn't feel worthless, and I was expecting the endless travel and dialogue resets to slow pacing in Chapter 8. But the extreme nature of fighting enemies like Abyss Worms, and touches like the tedious ferry in Ruan, make you realize just how fundamental Orbal tech is for the nation and for defeating Ouroboros. This part's full of surprises. Zane really came into his own for me because of his AOE Craft (which, coupled with Gladiator Belt, makes mob enemies easy to beat). Some NPC stories wrapped up/continued in cool ways, like the wedding in Rolent (Armand/Ellie + Kitty), the Ravens' redemption (sadly Eva's S-Craft for Tita is broken atm, but I bet it's cool), and Central Market's sale to stabilize prices. The battles in Grancel were easy, but now it seems Finale will have all the rough stuff coming ahead. Only things I dislike about Chapter 8 are Falcom refusing to let you augment overworld running speed (no-encounters Quartz is half-hearted), inconsistent NPC text advancement based on milestones, and not using depressed variations of town themes instead of just a cinematic track we've heard before.

I hate that fight.
I see people talk about spamming S-Crafts for this fight to end it quick, but the safest path (assuming party with Schera (Arts) and Zane) is to
spam Earth Wall for insurance, Clock Down most Worms (Joshua's move), use Morale to boost Joshua/Estelle's hits, and judiciously balance CP gains for Joshua with Evil Eye EX. Meanwhile Zane uses True Distend and Smite for maximum punch (understandably Agate makes this even more trivial), and Schera uses high-tier Wind Arts for nuking. Battle's either a gamble on early buffing + S-Crafts or slogging with debuffs and picking the Worms off one-by-one. I liked the fight, and it was definitely a better challenge than Gorgon Beam hell at Elize Highway
.

So how well is SC selling so far? Anyone knows?
Here's Sara's take from a thread on the Steam FC discussion board:

It was in the top sellers about as long as FC was, actually. It also got higher into them than FC did, all data considered. Both of them stayed really high on GOG for significantly longer than on Steam, but well, that's GOG. It isn't as indicative as it might be; it mostly means that there were way more purchases in a huge wave at release and that petered out. It doesn't really show in a useful way how many sales those actually were; Steam's best seller list is a confusing mess, and even a bit buggy at times.

That said, more than that, just... don't assume. At this point, all of the assumptions a lot of people are starting to make, are getting just plain toxic, and we have a lot more time to gain more sales, especially considering that SC's release got FC a lot of attention, including new purchases. I for one feel quite optimistic. SC's launch has also gone much smoother than FC's overall, with the bugs being much less gamebreaking or widespread. God am I ever thankful for that...
Launch hasn't been that much smoother than FC's (PSP content is wonky, achievements don't work right, and there's still text to fix, no surprised given the game's size), but the improvement's notable. I'm glad positive word of mouth, even when qualified with comments on the game's flaws, is pouring out now. SteamSpy numbers are going to be inaccurate until a month's passed, arguably; the peak users count on Steam is high enough for comfort (recently peaked at 739 vs. top of 820). SC is likely going to be a big seller for XSEED based on traditional expectations, though I think it'll be a while before we get 3rd and Crossbell.

Well now. I saw some of the end of chapter 8 coming, but certainly not all of it. I'm actually kind of impressed. That's the exact sort of thing that frustrates me in a lot of RPGs but I think it was handled really well here.
Haken Gate meeting and the flight towards the Aureole city was a gigantic plot bomb. Kloe's announcement of inheriting succession was obvious, but I didn't expect Olivier to be a bastard prince (rather an informant of noble upbringing). His plan with Cassius was deft, and the confusion of seeing him speak in a different sphere was amusing. Osborne being in the pocket of Ouroboros, if what Olivier says is true, scares me, and only three days to stop Ouroboros in Liberl? That's a toughie. Cassius knows his progeny are in for maybe the hardest fight of their lives, and it begins when Loewe's doll sinks the Arseille onto the city even after dodging Glorious. There's so much in the air now. How long have Weissmann and Loewe been operating at the city? What the hell kind of augmentation did Joshua get through Kevin (hinted by the Grancel Cathedral Father)? Holy shit I have butterflies in my chest
.

Done with Chapter 4. Both chapter 3 and 4 were fantastic. The plotlines themselves may not be super original, but the execution is top-notch.

I don't think a game has ever made me care about random NPCs that much.
During the investigation at night in Rolent I was looking for Claire because she always knows what's up but I couldn't find her! Where does she even live!

Also small Ch 4 question

After coming back from the farm I stopped by the general store before heading to the guild and bought chocolate for the guys. Does that do anything? Does it increase BP or something? The game never mentioned it again afterwards.

Nope, it's just a little extra event. No actual effect on anything.

guide is dead for chapter 5. anyone knows how to get Gambler Jack #7?

also, any idea if there are achievements for getting all the weapons or armors this time around?

The damage was sort of important for CP because you add a Gladiator's Headband (I think, I'd have to load up FC to check the actual setup) and she can basically use it indefinitely. Then the paltry damage would actually add up because she's contributing to damage on top of the debuff.
uh, the damage has nothing to do with Gladiator's Headband or other accessories CP related.
the only instance where the damage wasn't close to 0 was when she already used the debuff, and attacked (with the same skill) on top of that. and in that case you shouldn't really use the same skill if the debuff is already in effect.

Another thing that's enjoyable about this game. In almost its entirety, people actually act their age in both during their dialogue and events

I don't think the damage was ever that close to 0, it was always over 100 at the very least. Point being, actually doing damage allows for CP gain which is made even better with the headband, so 100-200 CP goes a MUCH longer way when part of it is being "reimbursed" through the actual skill usage.

If you're arguing that doing damage has nothing to do with CP gain then I dunno. Whatever though, guess this discussion is becoming pointless real quick.

CH2, (minor location spoiler?) worth
climbing Carnelia Tower?

There is no quest sending me there this time, on other hand I don't want to miss equipment/scenes...

On other hand, it's a pain to climb these things, i'd rather wait if I have to go there eventually anyway.

As far as I remember,
there is no quest (or even scenes!) there, but there is some good equipment. That tower is the most annoying of the lot, though, as it has the most complicated layout of them all
. I did it, but I'm pretty obsessive about seeing all the content in the game.

I believe I got an accessory from there that made all of my attacks/defense Fire based. Also encountered quite a few Shiny Poms on one of the higher up floors.

Totally missed this, what were they? At the very beginning of the last chapter so it might be worth it to load a save just before the events at the end of the chapter.

Ok, I yield. How the holy fuck do I catch a pearlglass? Tried the river on
Elize high road
as it seemed to fit the description of where they can be caught but I used all the bait I could and can't get one.

Yep, the spot is correct. Best bait is Dumplings but Earthworms work as well.

It takes forever. I saved beforehand, burned through my set of 20+ earthworms about 5 times before getting it near the end of my 6th.

Thanks! This is the first sidequest I've really not enjoyed, I've got no patience I guess. That spot has reeds like the one I was trying but I I'll stick to trying there since I knew now it works.

Noticed that dumplings got better fish generally than earthworms. Worms caught carp every time for me while dumplings caught mostly liberl carp and occasionally regular carp. After about 30 earthworms I tried dumplings and got it in about 7 tries. Did it on
Milch
but I guess both work because they have reeds.

Thanks again for the help, I was totally about to give up and lose even more BP.

She's even the config2.exe icon!

Maybe they're just inordinately fond of her.

And yes I am semi spoiled on future materials before anyone takes that too seriously.

I caught two of them with the first rod + earthworms in no time. I think the biggest issue is not that it's rare, but that it escapes practically before the ! bubble even appears. But about that...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/937451-the-legend-of-heroes-trails-in-the-sky-sc/72766678

I figured that technique out by myself a few days ago heh. Makes catching even the most difficult fish really trivial.

I tried to just mash X to see what happens and the answer is: nothing. The "timer" resets every time you press X, so you can just tap X every 1-2 seconds or something and at some point you'll catch something.

In chapter 3 I caught two Pearlglass really easily. I believe I used the Bamboo Fishing Rod and Dumplings on the fishing spot at the Erbe Royal Villa courtyard.

Yeah I got a Pearlglass on the first try using this method at the exact same spot, and I wasn't even deliberately aiming for it... just trying out the spot with all of the rods I had.

By the goddess, I just competed that quest and the scene at the end of it was amazing. I thought maybe I got the best version since
Olivier
was in my party but it turns out that his part is the same no matter what. You do get an extra bit at the church beforehand though where he runs out after
Anton.
These two are absolutely my favourite party member and favourite npc so that scene was incredible for me.

Also,
Olivier got kicked put of my party and and had to speak to him hungover upstairs to get him back in.

Yeah I just did that today. Amazing questline.
Aina
can't be human.

Yeah, that's a wonderful quest, and
having Olivier in your party adds some additional funny moments. Aina is just too bottomless.

I used to miss the fish about one time in 10. Ever since someone in this thread said to watch the rod, I've got it every single time. I think I have about six Pearlglass just chilling in my inventory since Chapter 3 (
you can catch them on the Villa grounds
).

Done with Chapter 2! Ugh, this was pretty bad. At least I got
Zane at the end. Tita and Kloe better get used to the bench from now on.

This chapter has some technobabble that I feel should have introduced in FC rather than so "late" in the series.

I also desperately need some decent Fire Orbs for Agate, hopefully in the next town.

Chapter 2 has been the worst for me. The main quest was total filler but there were some nice sidequests. 3 and 4 were great though and the intro to 5 has me gagging to play more. Except work means I can't until Friday :(

Tita sure, but Kloe is a top tier character and should always be in your party

I wasn't thinking perfectly straight, actually. Another NPC mentions weirdness atop the Towers in a way that seems normal after what you went through earlier, but I was doing monster exterminations before handing in my
ZFGs
and, when I got to Esmelas Tower's roof,
there was a new enemy to fight w/preemptive strike
. This encounter's the same at each of the Towers, and is fairly easy, netting you
Soul, Mind, Shield, and Power Orbs which mainly increase your stats
. It's a neat touch, but I don't know if these will be useful in Finale.

when does it become available?

the damage it was doing was pretty much useless, that was my point. I haven't used Kloe since chapter 2 or 3 in SC but I'm almost certain she was gaining CP with just the skill not doing any damage but just debuffing?
in FC I had on her the accessory that gives you CP each turn even if you don't perform any action, probably the upgraded version of the G. Headband.

Kloe doesn't gain CP from using Kaempfer anymore, that is correct. I think Gladiator Headband works a little differently in this game too. Not sure if spoiler so I'll just mark it anyway, this doesn't have any story spoilers and just discusses character strength:
That being said, Kloe is still an amazingly good character. I believe she has the highest base arts damage in the game and the highest arts speed and of course the all-healing S-Craft is quite the lifesaver in tough battles. She has two weaknesses one being range and the other being orbment setup but both can be mitigated fairly easily. Probably her biggest actual problem is that unlike Olivier she doesn't have any range on her Impede craft and you don't want to be running her to the front lines to stabby stab monsters & dudes out of crafts and arts.

The more flexible orbment options in SC really does help Kloe out compared to FC where she was almost forced into healing arts exclusively and couldn't access the top tier arts.

If we're talking the worst character it's probably Tita. Olivier can do everything she can do but better. Kind of a shame, still using her for fun though.

Someday I'll write up a spoiler-marked tier list for both games and we can have a nice discussion over which characters have the best overall utility.

Is that just an issue with the first rod? It's all I had at the time so I can't be sure. But yeah, I did notice a couple of fish getting away with the same timing I had gotten all the common fish with.

I'll be sure to get the proper rod and bait if/when I do my second playthrough lol.

Yeah, it's easy with the bamboo rod, but if you missed that one catching the fish becomes quite difficult since the chances to catch him are lower + it escapes more quickly with a bad rod. But like I said, using that trick I was able to catch it quickly regardless.

Yeah, in the ongoing absence of
Joshua, Kloe has taken over as my favorite character from a gameplay perspective — even ahead of Agate's raw damage-dealing. Her S-Break is a total troll power from the enemy's point of view, too.

Also, I'm currently running Estelle, Schera, Agate, Kloe, so everyone had an Impede Craft, and Schera can use her other Craft to AT Advance anything else I might need on the spot.

I got a Ch.5 question for those who've finished it:

When entering the dragon's lair, Khloe sent a message to General Morgan using Sieg. However, Khloe is completely optional to the party at this point (I had her in mine). Did anyone else not use her? If so, how did that scene play out (if it even exists)?
