#1 About the Avatar universe
-----------------------------------
Earth. Fire. Air. Water. These are the four elements able to be mastered by certain individuals, known as benders, in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra, created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. This world is heavily Asian-influenced. Bending arts are performed similarly to various Eastern martial arts, while the art direction is a fusion of American-styled animation and Japanese anime, with settings that resemble east-Asian and Inuit societies.
While most benders can only use one of the four elements – and generally coalesce into nations related to each element (The Earth Kingdom, The Water Tribe, The Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation) – a once-in-a-generation individual called the Avatar (a powerful bender who can not only bend all four elements, but has a connection to the world of humans and spirits) is born to one of the four nations as part of the Avatar Cycle. The Avatar must maintain or restore balance to the world between the four nations, which is threatened by circumstances of the Avatar's respective era.
Avatar: The Last Airbender was set towards the end of 100 years of war, after the missing Avatar, Aang, awoke from a century of slumber inside a block of ice. In order to restore balance, Aang had to travel the world with his new friends, master the three remaining elements he did not know (water, earth, and fire) and defeat the belligerent Fire Nation and its leader, the Fire Lord.
It's sequel, The Legend of Korra, is set 70 years after the events of the original show, during an industrial era similar to the Western world in the early 20th Century. With the war over and the nations of the world united, new troubles emerge in the form of social unrest from a non-bending underclass, and political leaders of the era jostling for power over the newly formed nation, The United Republic, and its capital, Republic City.

Many of the characters who have been confirmed to appear in Book Two will be here. The main characters and new arrivals will have short descriptions. Secondary returning characters won't have biographies, for the sake of keeping this OP as short as possible.
You'll also notice that all of these character portraits are GAF avatar friendly. I did that for a very good reason, so feel free to use them! I may be updating some of them as the season goes on with new portraits that are more up-to-date.
Main Characters

Korra – Janet Varney
Aang's successor as Avatar and series protagonist. Unlike her predecessor, who generally tried to avoid violence, Korra is hot-headed, short tempered and prefers to solve problems with actions rather than words. While Aang had to grow personally in order to deal with a belligerent and brutally oppressive Fire Nation, Korra's personal growth will come from facing problems in a time of relative peace.
While excellent at the physical side of bending, Korra is lacking in the spiritual side. And although she had made progress by the end of Book One, she still has much to learn about airbending and the spirit world.

Mako – David Faustino
Firebender. Love interest. Forever in Zuko's shadow.
Growing a spine.

Bolin – P.J. Byrne
Earthbender, and Mako's brother. Often considered the Sokka of the series (i.e. comic relief), only without the brain, and a little more brawn. Once had a crush on Korra when she joined Mako and himself in a pro-bending tournament, but he has since gotten over it. As of Book Two, he is still pro-bending, unlike his two former team mates, who have moved on.

Asami Sato – Seychelle Gabriel
Non-bending daughter of mega-industrialist, Hiroshi Sato, Asami has inherited her father's business empire. After the events of Book One, the business is struggling, and Asami must do what she can to restore it to its former glory. She is an avid race car driver, martial-arts specialist, and former love interest of Mako. That's bound to cause tensions between her and Korra. Yep.

Tenzin – J.K. Simmons
Avatar Aang's only airbending child, Tenzin was, for a while, the sole airbender on the planet, making him de-facto head of the Air Nomads both globally, and as a representative in the Republic City council (roles which he takes very seriously, along with literally everything else). As of the end of Book One, the usually calm and contemplative Tenzin was still teaching the hot-headed Korra the art of airbending while helping her connect with the spirit world.
Returning Secondary Characters

Lin Beifong – Mindy Sterling
Pema – Maria Bamford
Jinora – Kiernan Shipka
Ikki – Darcy Rose Byrnes
Meelo – Logan Wells
Rohan
Naga – Dee Bradley Baker
Pabu – Dee Bradley Baker
Important Book Two Characters

Tonraq – James Remar
Korra's warrior father. Just like Korra, he is an exceptionally talented physical bender. However, that is where his skills end, for he lacks a spiritual connection to the people of the Northern Water Tribe, who he was suppose to lead. Instead, he chose a life of relative peace in the Southern Water Tribe.

Unalaq – Adrian LaTourelle
Korra's uncle, and Tonraq's brother. He is the chief of the Northern and Southern Water Tribes. Opposite to his brother, he has a strong connection with the Spirit World, and is set to be a key player in the events of Book Two.

Desna and Eska – Aaron Himelstein and Aubrey Plaza
Unalaq's twins, Desna and Eska may look similar, but are actually a boy and a girl respectively. Beyond their gender, they're pretty similar. They show very little emotion, except for boredom and a distaste for most things, including Korra and the Southern Water Tribe.

Bumi – Richard Riehle
Avatar Aang's first son, and second child. He is a non-bender, and former commander in the United Forces. After the Equalist Revolt, he retired from the army and chose to live on Air Temple Island with his younger brother, Tenzin. Personality wise, the pair are complete opposites. Tenzin is sensible and contemplative, whereas Bumi is described as “wild”, despite being an amazing strategist. This conflict is sure to provide plenty of sibling clashes going forward.

Kya – Lisa Edelstein
Avatar Aang's eldest child, and only daughter. She is a water bender, having followed her mother, and seems to combine the clear head that Tenzin has when necessary, alongside Bumi's wild side at other times, especially around her brothers.

Varrick – John Michael Higgins
Like Hiroshi Sato, Varrick is a captain of industry, and as such a prominent leader of the era. Unlike Mr Sato, Varrick is from the Southern Water Tribe, whereas Sato is of Fire Nation heritage. Varrick spends most of his time travelling the world on his yacht.

Wan – Steven Yeun
You will know who this man is soon enough. He's super important, but his identity is super spoilerific until later in the season. I know it may seem a bit silly to write about all the other new characters and not Wan, but if you don't know who he is already you will appreciate me not telling you once you find out. Seriously, he's a megaton as far as Avatar lore goes. If you really want to know he is (spoiler!)
the very first Avatar, and will have a double episode dedicated to his story

#4 Spoiler Policy
---------------------
I'm going to keep this very simple for those who just want to read this. We're following regular TV thread rules, so:
- Once an episode has aired in the US, spoiler tags of what happened in that episode are no longer required. If you don't want to be spoiled, don't read the thread until you are up-to-date with the latest broadcast.
- Anything that hasn't aired as part of an episode should be spoiler tagged, regardless of whether that information is officially or unofficially released. So you should spoiler tag info from any trailers, interviews, clips, summaries, episode titles, leaks, and so on.
- Spoiler tags apply to speculation where necessary, but nobody wants to read paragraphs of tagged stuff. Tag where speculation is based off of information that needs to be spoiler tagged, but keep most speculation tag-free.
- Please don't use IMG tags when posting spoiler pics. Link to them via a URL and spoiler warn people. It's the courteous thing to do.
- If things get bad, we'll see whether a spoiler thread is necessary. But let's see how we get on with Episode 1 first of all.

Omikaru said:So anyway, about that episode 7 leak,I think this season is gonna get good from here!Korra and Mako split up! Yay! And then Meelo literally becomes the leaf! Double yay!
In regards to what we saw in that leak, I have a new theory now.Meelo is going to assist Korra in the spirit world now that he is “dead”. Maybe he'll be more than a walking fart joke in this role.
Also, I took this screenshot from the video. They've really captured Korra's good side here.
See how I gave information of what the spoiler relates to outside of tags? That's what we like to see. Giving spoiler warnings also applies to linking to any videos or pictures. You don't need to go overboard, but be courteous. If it's an image from an unreleased episode, link to it with a clear indication that there's spoilers if you click it rather than just putting it in IMG tags. That way, anyone who doesn't want to see it doesn't have to.
In short, don't post anything untagged that will cause this reaction:

There's also an animated graphic novel, Escape from the Spirit World, that takes place between Book Two and Book Three of Avatar: The Last Airbender. You can watch that here.
The Legend of Korra
There's not too many places to grab The Legend of Korra yet. The Blu-ray is region free (but not the DVD, so don't buy that unless you can play American DVDs), so that's an option for people prepared to pay. Also, iTunes has the whole season available, and your local region's PlayStation Video Store should also have episodes of Book One going up as soon as they're broadcast. If you know of any other legal places to watch this, especially for people outside of America, be sure to let me know and I'll add them here.
If you are from America or can use the region workaround to access Nick.com (I can't, so I can't personally test these links, sorry!), this list of episodes are free and legal.
