The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword |OT| Home of Punkin' Chunkin' Champion 2011

4th dungeon beat. That boss was incredible. Kind of thought I was doing something wrong since
it required so many hits when the cage to its heart opened up. Thought I would have to use the whip to take the heart out or its head off or something.

Wow the final parts of this game are great. Quite a few surprises there. I tried to beat the final boss but he kept kicking my ass :(

(FINAL BOSS SPOILER) Hint:
Fi makes a point about you not being able to use your Skyward Strike because of the magic clouds. But then he does it just fine.

Oh, by the way, what happens if you're hit in
the Silent Realms? Game Over or just tossed back to the entrance of the area? It's practically the same thing, I know, but I'm curious. (But not curios enough to go kick a Guardian in the shin.)
Back to
the beginning of the challenge; has to collect any you collected again. But the ones you collected appear in the map. You can also use that to get more of those.. purple things I forgot the name. :p

Hmmm thanks for the hint, that might come in handy. I just really hate

Thunder/electricity attacks

Soooooooo....

My copy of Skyward Sword (CE) has been utterly crushed due to Amazon's inadequate packing. Any similar cases here? Or, any success with getting some sort of credit from Amazon?

Just spent an hour getting my ass kicked by the final boss, over and over. Finally beat it and was amazed that they would make a Zelda boss so tough. Then I went and watched a youtube video of the fight and realized I was doing it COMPLETELY wrong.
It never occurred to me to try to catch the thunder in my sword. I beat the boss just by circling him, floating in and out of his range, waiting for him to leave a tiny opening and get a quick slash in. The problem is that the openings are SMALL and it's often unclear whether he's open or gonna zap you with lightening. Took a lot of trial and error to figure it out. Although admittedly when I calmed the fuck down and took my time, making sure to stay out of the range of his left to right strike (which has HUGE range, and even if you parry it he keeps on slashing) it wasn't nearly so bad.

I did however become a total boss at the first part of the fight. If you're good at parrying you can go TOTALLY blitzkrieg on his ass and never stop slashing, while just parrying every one of his attacks. I swear I can beat that section in 12 seconds at this point without losing a heart.

And since I blazed through the main story I had only one bottle for a health potion, and couldn't upgrade it because I had no bugs.

Eeeeesh.

I used 2 enhanced guardian potions, and kept attacking the final boss - it was the only way I could figure out how to do it, especially after being trounced about 6 times before hand!

How are you guys getting all those fancy potions? I know I can upgrade, but I need a lot of bugs for that, and I don't have a lot of bugs. A basic Heart potion isn't that great anymore when Link is up to 13 hearts.

Did some of you just say you spent up to half an hour in the silent realms?

I assume the later ones are hard then?

Because the first one would have taken me no more than 5 minutes. Again, I assume the first one is the 'introductory' one where they take it easy on you.

Just beat the third dungeon. Exploring the third area was fun, and I liked the dungeon design. The boss gave me a but of trouble during its second phase, until I remember that I should be using the item I got in the dungeon. I am really enjoying the cutscenes in this game. I look forward o what happens next.

To the average player they are all easy, of course in each sucesive one the difficulty gets elevated but not so much. Problem is 90 seconds for each seed is too much and add to that beacon seeds that inform you of the positions at all times. So the exercise is reduced to search for the closest seed at the begining of the trial and go from there.

The hardest one i grabed was in the last sequence, it forces you to get detected but its a cakewalk to out run the phantoms so i just instinctivly left that one for last and had zero problems.

For hero mode Nintendo could have either reduced the time limit to half or get rid of the beacon seeds, as it is now SRs are just too easy. That's in the case they didn't one to mess with the times at the first playthrough.

(post-6th dungeon spoiler)
I found the last silent realm to be the easiest because I knew the area the best. The game's more fun on your home turf.

It never occurred to me either,
she said your Skyward Strike wouldn't work so I didn't even bother trying. Pretty misleading.

Did I just not listen to her?
The first thing I did was a Skyward Strike, and realized it stunned him. Especially since, it was the only way to counter his version of it.

Only after
he starts to summon lightning can you use the skyward strike to draw lightning of your own and stun him. I didn't know this my first time through, and when I beat him a second time, it was so much easier

Meh, considering that the only enemy you need to use that strike on in the game literally can't be hurt in any other way, it's not exactly the first thing that comes to mind. And when slashing him hurts him just fine, it's logical to assume that you're supposed to just hack your way to victory.

Same here, and yeah, Fi could have waited just a tiny bit longer with that one hint. Great setting for a dungeons, though, and an amazing lead-in to it. The boss, on the other hand, was a little on the easy side. And I was torn between stabbing it or giving it a great big hug. So cute! Then it gave ME a hug and the cuteness wore off fast.

So next up... I'm thinking sidequests. I want to get some stuff upgraded now. Getting a little nervous about that Sacred Shield, but I need bird feathers. I guess I catch birds with the net to get those? But my net is tiny, so that first. But I don't have enough tumbleweeds. I kind of wish you could buy these things at a secret store for maybe 50-100 Rupees.

The silent realms are pretty easy, sure, but I'm amazed it's as good as it is, considering previous attempts at these sorts of mechanics (Forsaken Fortress, Temple of the Ocean King, TP Tears of Light).

And you actually have a cool reward to look forward to while doing them.

I'm just going to re-post the 4 Gecko Codes that have transformed this game into a whole new experience for me, and I'll do that because you really, really should try them out when doing a re-run, specially on
Hero Mode
.

You won't even mind Fi that much after you implement these, I swear it sounds like I'm crazy but trust me, I'm not kidding you:

No Notification The First Time You Collect A Bug Or Treasure
042541C4 60000000

That code alone improved the gameplay a lot, coupled with:

Always fly at boost ring speed
26AF1E9C 43480001
28599D0C BFFF4000
82200005 80AF1E9C
86A00005 3F700000
84200005 80AF1E9C
28599D0D BFFF0000
04AF1E9C 43480000
E0000000 80008000

(hold C to slow down)

That code won't work inside the
Thunderhead
for some reason, but hey! you only visit that place 4 times in the entire game, so no biggie at all.

You won't ever have to bore yourself to death. Reaching Skyloft takes around 5-8 seconds from any of the 3 main locations, I swear.

And here's some extra codes that you might like as well:

Disable Low Health Alarm
0420AC88 48000028

(Extremely useful for
Hero Mode
Re-runs.)

Disable Fi's Low Health Warning
0416C700 4800003C

Disable Fi's Low Shield Gauge Warning
0416C684 4800003C

I'm using all of them and it feels like a whole different game.

And a bonus for hardcore fans (I'll use it as soon as I'm done with my 2nd run)

3 Heart Run
0095A767 0000000C

Bear in mind, the game might freeze at random (happened to me once) so it's recommended you save as often as you can.

Right as I find one of those barred openings to above, the sword starts blinking. "Look up. There is a high chance that you will be able to strike the Timestone through this opening." Gee, thanks, Fi. I was about to look up already, sunlight usually means it's interesting. Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm the one who pressed D-Pad down and summoned her, but still. At least limit it to "Master, the ship's masts are visible through the opening above you." at first.
I guess the Japanese playtesters had trouble there. But I've played my share of adventure games and RPGs. I always check the ceiling for monsters or clues. This is a good habit in Skyward Sword as well.

Also I wish I didn't highlight a few of the previous spoilers, but... my mistake. The little I got of the final boss sounds like it's going to be fun! And painful! The fun will be doubled!

(Seriously, I'm looking forward to a Zelda final boss that puts up a fight. What was the last one we had of those? Majora? Ganondorf is pretty much an easy boss in all the games I've met him in so far.)

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
DSP started his playthrough... REJOICE :D

Slightly over 15 hours in and made it to the the third area. Nice concept they got going on here and I upgraded a certain gadget that just got even cooler. I like how Nintendo has though of ways to balance the use of old and new items like the slingshot.

Well, finished it at 48 hours!
What an incredibly awesome game. That last boss was really amazing and the ending was sweet and touching.
"May we meet again in another life..."

Definitely my favorite 3D Zelda, and the best game I've played this year. It may not "beat" the 2D ones since there's nostalgia connected to it; but really loved nearly everything about it.

Here's for another 25 years! XD

EDIT:
Now, to do some sidequests!! :p
(spoiler-tagged "the quote"..even when I omitted part of it; just in case.. :p)

Final boss:

I didn't actually beat the final boss the way everyone is saying here. I actually just
went the traditional route and used my shield to block his sword then get my hits in.

In his first form, he attacks with his sword 2 times. I use my shield 2 times, then hit him twice really fast. There will be a couple points where I can wail on him with my sword.

In his second form, he attacks with his sword 3 times. I just use my shield those 3 times, then attack.

Basically, with careful timing, I can beat him in 1 or 2 minutes. I had no idea I could catch the thunder with my sword. I'm gonna have to try that now.

What I found really strange, however, is that
you can use the iron shield on his electrified sword without getting electrocuted.
Horray for consistency!

I'm not able to locate the ship with Lanaryu's flame in it. I used dowsing but keep going in circles, I think I missed one of the robot's instructions. Can I get some help?

When it seems to be close during dowsing, try shooting in that direction.

He is absolutely correct.

In MM you collect boss masks, masks in general, and summon guardians to stop the moon. In OoT you collect spiritual stones and free sages. In Wind Waker you collect pearls and forge your Master Sword in different locations. In TP you collect tears of light, fused shadows, and pieces of a broken mirror.

But those aren't fetch quests, they are objective markers.

In Devil May Cry 1, you fight demons.

In Devil May Cry 3, you fight demons.

In Devil May Cry 4, you fight demons.

Every Devil May Cry game is a demon extermination simulator!

Okay, that's what I thought. I instinctively knew what to do as well, so she did little more than state the obvious (you know, her usual shtick).

Lanayru Desert is easily the worst zone to ever make it to a Zelda game.

It isn't my favorite area (I love the mood of Faron Woods more), but it easily had the best gameplay mechanics not only in SS, and not only in the Zelda series, but in gaming in general.

Really, this comment made me realize that now I can finally say I've heard everything regarding this game.

After thinking about previous Zelda games and beating Skyward Sword I went back and put Oracle of Seasons in. It appears I had forgotten how poorly written the game is compared to even older titles in Link's Awakening. And the first dungeon was pretty.. unimpressive. Might buzz through it though before Mario Kart comes out.

She never said anything to me. I always target every boss for a Fi report, but I tell her I've heard enough before she can spoil strategy.
I knew I couldn't charge a skyward strike in the first round, and in the second round I hopped around a bit trying to find an openning. I thought it was quite clever how they hinted at what you should do. The lightning isn't just striking when he calls for it, and it strikes close to you. Made me think "lightning rod" so I held up my sword and charged it like a boss. So epic.

You just wave the remote back and forth at a consistent tempo....I didn't think it was hard :(
Yep. I realized this when doing the side quest involving the harp. Ignore what the game tells you and just follow one tempo. The game says you did a shit job, but you complete the sidequest and never have to do it again (unless you want a frustrating way to earn 50 rupees).

I'm just post Dungeon 6:

As I first started the Silent Realm section, I had horrible flashbacks to TP when I was given the tear container. Then horrified when I found out that it was one chance.

But as it turned out, they weren't too bad, and quite fun in retrospect. My last sequence in the fire area was super tense. I did it in one go, but that last one I had to get was very far away, and I had to evade the flying ghosts to get to it. I had to slide down and avoid one of the armored ones right next to it. I was so happy when I got it.

A hint: use your beacons! You can see where a tear is, and then pause and got to your map, and place a beacon. You can pause and unpause until you place it right. I tend to run up to a light tear, and just before nabbing it, spend the remaining time placing beacons. I didn't do this exclusively, but you can quickly add some hints if you're finding it tough.

Also, re: the "escort" mission. I could barely even tell it was an escort mission. I was running ahead so far and using my bow to take out most enemies from afar. When fighting the two lizalfos, One was even attacking my robot with no effect, except for him complaining.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Just went through the
Three Dragon Challenge...and no glitch! :)

-Tadtone took a bit longer, but wasn't that frustrating really. I don't wanna do it again though.
-The Stealth Section was too short...I was very disappointed when I got the sword and all my items back so easily. It was awesome while it lasted, though.
-Lanayru Gorge timestone obstacle course was fun, too.

I finally got some more time with this today. I finished the first dungeon.
The boss really kicked my ass. It took me a while before I decided to be more aggressive. For the first like 3 tries, I only attacked
when I saw him blocking. I was able to dodge all his attacks except the one where he charges across the screen at you. That one I can only dodge sometimes
.

It was a very mean tutorial about sword fighting for me. I whipped myself in the face a few times with the cord thingy that goes between the wii mote and the nunchuck. I may have been too enthusiastic about my attacking.
But I'm loving this game so far. I can't wait for my next play session!

My only complaint right now is the shield breaking thing. I never want to use my shield because it'll just break. Blech... equipment durability is the worst thing ever.

So I'm on the final boss now, and it's really kicking my ass.

Fi's description of Demise was interesting, I'm guessing it implies that Ganondorf and Ganon are forms of Demise. Am I fucking up here or is the first form really this brutal? I've only gotten through it once, and then only had one heart left and died on the second form.

So Ghirahim was a sword spirit after all, how interesting.

I thought the same thing until I realized that if you thrust out your shield with the nunchuk just as the enemy hits it, you stun the enemy and your shield doesn't get damaged. Using the shield is pretty fun now that I know that.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Thanks! I'll be sure to try it the next time I play!
Though I'm stupid and clumsy and I don't know if I can keep track of swinging and thrusting with both my hands at the same time.

The shield meter is one of my favorite additions to this game. The meter limits it so it isn't the be-all end-all brainless defense option it is in previous Zeldas, and the way you can use your shield bash properly to circumvent that gives the game a really good feeling of reward vs. risk. I really hope the shield system returns in future 3D Zeldas.
