The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword |OT| Home of Punkin' Chunkin' Champion 2011

When you save the game outside a dungeon, do you return to Skyloft? Or are there actually checkpoints throughout the overworld?

Can't remember how TP or WW did it, but didn't like how OoT3D did it.

Checkpoints. Wherever you save is the point you'll start from.

RE: controls, personally I know I'd enjoy this game more if it was with a Gamecube controller. Motion controls don't add much for me at all. Ideal control scheme would just be TP's Wii controls I guess. Given all or nothing, I'll take no motion controls.

if you save at a bird statue, you resume at that statue, no matter where it is

I consider myself an advocate of the motion control implementation of the game (save for the swiming) but saying that fight in your spoiler tag wouldn't be possible, is not an acurate statement. Remember you could pull horizontal, vertical swings from multiple directions and stabs since the series got 3D.

It would not have been nearly as fun, or as graceful. I don't think most people ever paid any attention to which way their sword was striking in the earlier 3D Zeldas, except for while abusing the jumping slash damage bonus in Ocarina of Time.

I'm past the second dungeon, and thus far, the game is a disappointment. Like I said before, it'll probably get better, but the fetch quests I've been on, and the dungeon design has been really lacking. The combat can be great, depending on the enemy, but I tend to just randomly swing until I hit the enemy. I will say this, though, bomb throwing with motion control is very frustrating when it doesn't register my motions. I think I need one of those 3rd party sensor bars.

Now with the bold i agree. Plus for a new commer the sword control is more natural (when it works) than learning a stick + button combination.
Fucking disgusting fetch quest done, holy shit my wrist HURTS
That was the stupidest one. It's not fun, doesn't make sense from a plot point of view. It's the unnecessary padding that Nintendo loves so much and that was critisized by the people at the beginning of the thread. Also in the down to earth reviews.

Its the Banjo Kazzoie moment of the game.

Have you been using your shield at all? Doing a parry to stun enemies is a really useful tactic for some of the larger fights, and will keep you from feeling like you have to swing haphazardly to do any damage.

Well that would be a superb waste of money, considering skyward sword does NOT use the sensor bar. At all. Seriously. Start a game, get out your bow, and cover up the camera on the wii remote. Still works? Yep, because it's entirely motion+ detected.

Sweet. Thanks for the quick replies.

From what I heard, it uses the sensor bar to recalibrate at regular intervals.

AWFUL underwater fetch quest in Faron Forest with the AWFUL underwater motion control, jesus christ Nintendo :((((

Well this scares me hahaha. Freaking fetch quests basically screw this games. They are NONSTOP. Only really bad design idea.

I personally don't see how the IR bar is doing any calibration. The game still sets the center point at whatever angle you're holding the Wiimote when you enter first person or a menu, and the sword controls are presumably done by the Wiimote itself.

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Most of us North Americans will be picking this game up exactly this time tomorrow.

24 hours away..... crazy.

Try plugging out the sensor bar. You'll notice the sword will not be positioned properly anymore after a while.

What fetch quests are you talking about? If you're talking about finding 4 penguins or 5 parts of a key, I really don't understand the problem people are having with these. The 5 parts of a key one, especially, was in an all new areas. The game is literally just saying 'explore these new areas and pick up some stuff'. It's no different to just exploring a new area to get to the end.

Maybe they get worse and lazier later on, but up to where you're at it's just exploration of new areas.

Exploring an area isn't fun when the exploration has you going around looking for something. All it takes is struggling for a few minutes for it to become tedious.

They have dowsing for people that struggle with that.

It doesn't strike me as much different than "hit the 4 switches" or "find the 4 Poes" or "rescue the 5 Gorons". Basically what you've done in Zelda dungeons for ages now, only applied to the overworld this time.

the overworld in Skyward Sword is basically just like the Minish Cap's. But in 3D. Anyone who has played the minish cap and remembers the mountain range area will agree with me.

makes sense considering both games have the same director.

Dowsing causes more problems than it solves. It makes the task feel even more tedious.

I've been fine with the game since Dungeon 2, but the two fetch quests before the first two dungeons are series low points for me.

Well that's what the dowsing is for. I still genuinely don't see the issue, I feel like people are hopping on this bandwagon that being asked to collect anything, no matter the context, is bad and lazy game design. If it was asking you to retrace your steps then maybe, but it wasn't. Maybe it gets worse later in the game, but experienced gamers complaining about being asked to collect a few items in a brand new area of the game just feels absurd to me. The items aren't even hidden particularly. For the five parts of a key you just had to follow the varying different paths. The funny thing is, if you laid those paths out in a straight line, no-one would complain about them, but ask people to collect an item at the end of each and it's 'omg fetch quest!'

I hate fetch quests, all of them, and I didn't think the
five key parts
was exploring anything besides an extra cave or two. I viewed it simply as padding the game length, and nothing more. One of them was exactly next to where the fetch quest started, so it's not a new area. In fact, I think only two were in actually new areas.

A lot of people hate fetch quests, and I'm one of them.

just wait until you get to IMO the worst part of the game:

THE ESCORT QUEST!

*takes ten minutes to get up the mountain without my cargo being attacked, then I get stuck running up a wall by accident, and knocked into a chasm. I lose. LOL START OVER AGAIN*

This is a spoiler in the very real sense of the word. You've made me not want to play the game :(

But you'd only just got to that area! This is ridiculous, it's like if you're not constantly moving forwards its padding. On one hand you have people saying there's no exploring, then people complain when they're asked to explore. There was zero recycling of content in that quest. You walked into the area, spoke to a couple of NPC's and then set about finding 5 parts of a key in an area you hadn't been to before.

Also, playin' this sitting down ...can it be done?

I mean, are we having to make aggressive swipes here for it to register (ala shitty TP) or is it pretty sensitive/responsive like Mario Galaxy?

It was kinda fun for me. And you don't really start all over again, all enemies you defeated won't respawn.

You already hate the game anyway.

Need some help with something in the 3rd dungeon/area

I'm in a room with a power generator, there's a big gap in the middle of the room. I've beetled dropped one of those electro shells things over it but can't figure out how to get over to stand on it. It's the room with a long platform on the left side with a chest on top but I'm unable to jump up on it.

Nah. Hated parts of it, but the last sections have been amazing.

It's not too terrible as long as you have arrows (so buy the Quiver and try to upgrade it and it should be painless), but the way it's set up makes you go "oh c'mon..."

fetch quests? 2nd dungeon design lacking?

I think the issue is not the game but the fact that you have no patients (wow you have to collect 5 measily items within a small section of a dungeon it's so arduous)...you expect to just walkthrough dungeon to dungeon with no effort and thought process as if it's some generic shooter game with a big sign that says "FOLLOW"...

Exploring is part of a Zelda game...collecting things is part of Zelda game...solving puzzles is part of a Zelda game.

If you don't like these things what in the world are you doing playing a Zelda game?

You guys playin' with the condom on or off?

Off...never play with it on...

Guys, cheer me up please.

Because of Skyrim I only played until the entrance of the second temple. I tried to stay spoiler free for Skyward and was really happy with the art design, graphic style and music.
But I got some real huge gameplay problems, especially after playing Skyrim. So yeah, do those things get better?

-I can´t skip dialogues, which pisses me off the most. The story telling is funny and fresh but the sidequests and minigames ... I did the bambus minigame about 30 times and everytime I failed he told my sword isn´t long enough. Even if you press "A" it takes so long until you can try again.
-Did 3 sidequests. After finding the girl it took me about 20 mins to find the house of the mother to get my reward. The other 2 were the birdy thing and soup. Quite boring ...
-The world feels so ... FF XIII like. You can´t explore, at all. Theres only way to go. Don´t recall it ever being SO restricted in a Zelda game.
-First dungeon felt "meh" :x . This isn´t a big downpoint for me, because it was the first tutorial temple after all.

So yeah ... hope it gets better and only started a bit slow.
