I try to inject inclusive and diverse into every pitch, presentation and blog post we do now. Easy way to show you are down with the kids.

It's hilarious when companies use diversity and inclusion as a marketing tool. There's nothing sincere about these practices.

Having said that, the change is barely noticeable. The biggest change was making the female character wear normal sneakers instead of high heel boots. I consider that a positive change because she looked fucking stupid with the old boots.

If people who have a knee jerk reaction against this type of messaging hadn’t told me to be outraged I wouldn’t have even know a change was made: they look the same to me? I just find it funnny corporations spend so much time money and effort on something that’s not even a major design change and yet still manage to piss people off.

IMHO they’re not that big of changes.
Who fucking cares?
Oh, so they already changed 'em. :D I didn't notice any difference. I just find it hilarious that it's an actual news story.

I don't think there is an actual outrage. People on Twitter are mostly reacting to the announcement with "why?" and stupid jokes. The article did mention that.

And the company's twitter is playing into it.

I didn't even realize there was more than 3 M&M's character, only saw Red, Yellow and Brown in ads over here.
Also "Red being less mean to the others" ? Isn't that the definition of its character, Red is mean, Yellow is dumb, Brown is bossy ?

The only KPI is if revenue goes up after this brave and empowering transformation. If it does then campaign was a success.

The two female characters will wear less stereotypically feminine attire now, as well — the brown M&M’s heels have been lowered to sensible pumps, and in lieu of her signature go-go boots, the green M&M now sports a pair of “cool, laid-back sneakers to reflect her effortless confidence.”

Which one is non binary?

Whoa bigot, that’s not very inclusive to stereotype colors like that.

This was all by design.

The article is funny because it highlights the pisstaking, but really they’re playing babyface and heel at the same time and relishing every type of reaction, because it’s all eyes on them at the end of the day. Every time someone shares an article/tweet/video with their ridiculous/progressive (you choose) statements about inclusivity and social issues, it encourages someone to share the article with another group of people.

What is marketing? People knowing your product exists. You want them to remember. It’s not ever going to be about social issues, that’s the bait that makes you tell your friends. The next time you’re in a shop, people will notice the M&Ms and that’s already a victory. They manipulated you into marketing for them for free.

How many boycotts do you think this will get them? Will they last? Compare that with how many people that will think “I love peanut M&Ms, but it’s been ages since I had some” and will now buy a bag.

Mars has good marketing people.
