If people who have a knee jerk reaction against this type of messaging hadn’t told me to be outraged I wouldn’t have even know a change was made: they look the same to me? I just find it funnny corporations spend so much time money and effort on something that’s not even a major design change and yet still manage to piss people off.

Nobody is angry, you see it and the reaction is..well that's just stupid..
make a joke about it.. move on with life.

Didn't give much thought to genders and chocolate bars before.

First thoughts of ones that stuck with me were the Sweet Marie Girl and O'Henry Big chuck of Fuuuudge.

But those are implied characters but not mascots.
Design changes happen. Framing it as inclusive is a bit silly, unnecessary and dated to me, they could say modernizing. But whatever, chatter is free advertising.

This was all by design.

The article is funny because it highlights the pisstaking, but really they’re playing babyface and heel at the same time and relishing every type of reaction, because it’s all eyes on them at the end of the day. Every time someone shares an article/tweet/video with their ridiculous/progressive (you choose) statements about inclusivity and social issues, it encourages someone to share the article with another group of people.

What is marketing? People knowing your product exists. You want them to remember. It’s not ever going to be about social issues, that’s the bait that makes you tell your friends. The next time you’re in a shop, people will notice the M&Ms and that’s already a victory. They manipulated you into marketing for them for free.

How many boycotts do you think this will get them? Will they last? Compare that with how many people that will think “I love peanut M&Ms, but it’s been ages since I had some” and will now buy a bag.

Mars has good marketing people.
Trying to send messages like this alienates half the market. How is pissing off tons of people “good marketing” if they remember the company as an asshole? It’s death by association. I haven’t bought anything by Mars since they killed Uncle Ben

Cheeks Spread for Digital Only Future
It's hilarious when companies use diversity and inclusion as a marketing tool. There's nothing sincere about these practices.

Having said that, the change is barely noticeable. The biggest change was making the female character wear normal sneakers instead of high heel boots. I consider that a positive change because she looked fucking stupid with the old boots.
Yeah I wouldn't have even noticed if they hadn't said anything. Pretty sure that is the whole point though, no-one is basing their M&M purchase on the shoes they are wearing, but now everyone is thinking about them again.

For years I have been sucking on them, unaware that I had tiny dicks in my mouth. Soon enough I will be able to go for a female only pack...

They're all chocolate on the inside.
There is also peanut inside or its clearly the inferior version! #NotSorry

Sadly, I may have to remove this from my top 5 candylist :(
The last time i removed candy from the list it was Basset Winegums when they changed their recipe and the new ones tastes like dirt.

But this is a sad day, M&M is a great candy but i cannot support this. #sadface

So their marketing would make sense if people talk about M&Ms everyday pondering the "inclusiveness" of the characters. Then Mars can step forward and say Let's show you our next step.

What I think what really happened is they called in an inclusive genius or whatever they call them and looked to see how they can promote further inclusiveness. Then someone joked about the characters, a light bulb appeared and they gave them a fat promotion.

In the end will this stop me from eating or promote buying more m&m's? Nope. Like someone mentioned above, their marketing department just met their goals without people truly knowing if they are mocking the system or part of the system.

Personally I think if the inclusiveness of m&m characters were at the top of your talking points list daily, well it might be time for some introspection.
