Two things.
1. I had no idea Tie-Fighters could land like that. Is this something new and do they now have hyperspace ability or is there a Star Destroyer in orbit?

2. I like that despite losing to the Rebels, Imperials keep rocking capes.

This was a great episode. Loved the campfire assault.

That TIE was designed for The Force Awakens but JJ thought it was too new and not nostalgic enough for the movie, so he rejected it and then Favreau picked it up for The Mandalorian.

Or the Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers serials from the 50s, which is what SW was primarily inspired from.

The Mandalorian is straight up like some Buck Rogers. Each episode is like its own self contained adventure with a single constant (the baby Yoda ordeal).

Those expecting some sort of closure next week need to pump the breaks. This show will be on for awhile. They won’t be tying up anything with a bow on the 27th.

Really good lead-up to the season finale, and pay-off for a bunch of the elements in the season so far.

It’s also cool that the reason this episode came out today, was to lay a little groundwork for something in Rise of Skywalker. I won’t spoil that, though.

Although it’s a shame it’s hitting its stride just as the season is ending, I think Mandalorian might just stick the landing. It’s not must-see TV, but there’s enough positive elements, and now, good episodes, to leave this season with an overall positive impression.

It’s also not lost on me that the TLJ wokeness is gone. You can argue that Carano’s character is a essentially a guy in a female wrapper, and you’d be right, but she’s also really likable.

I want to make love to Carano, I don't want to make love to Rose.

Exactly this. People seem to forget that Star Wars was largely inspired by those old scifi serials. Lucas admits that he wanted to make a new Flash Gordon film but couldn't obtain the rights, so he made his own take. Still, he took a lot of inspiration from them, like the opening crawl from Flash Gordon.

Mando as a character is cut from the same cloth as other space heroes like Flash and Buck Rogers. Although thankfully TV production standards have vastly improved since the days when Star Wars first hit it big in the 70's. Here's a clip from 1979's Buck Rogers:

I feel like the thing this show does right that other star wars movies have failed at is maintaining the proper amount of grandeur in its use of iconic visual design & lore.

The movies treat the force as a thing that exists but isn’t impressive. It’s like everyone’s got that shit and it can just do whatever, no consequence.

This show makes the force special, when used it’s generally a big deal and is treated as such.

Same with the tie fighters or the big walker. These things aren’t flash in the pan throw away visuals. They are impressive set pieces that drive home the size and terror they strike in their enemies.

It’s great.

Young Jedi Knights series

Now that I think about it, I can't really claim to know any of this anymore since they dumped the old canon, but in the Young Jedi Knights series which focused on Luke running a Jedi temple that had han and leia's 3 children attending as well as Chewie's nephew. In that series the Jacen and Jaina are twins of Han and Leia, Jaina is a total gear head who rebuilds her own Tie Fighter and Jacen's is an animal lover dude.

The initial book was built around a downed tie fighter from RotJ who had basically survived in the woods all this time unaware the war was over and the young jedi knights stumble upon him.

I agree with this. And I think it's not just the sequel trilogy that failed in this respect, but the prequels too. George Lucas made the Force lose a lot of it's mystique with all the Jedi running around and of course, midichlorians.

The presence of Baby Yoda makes the Force seem like unfamiliar territory for the characters in the show. It's been incredible how they've handled it.

Yeah, great episode. I really liked it.
The kid getting behind the ships controls and then later force-choking the warrior chick, were both genuinely funny. I didnt think the show was capable of that
It was sweet to see the speeder bikes too. Those scouts really are the coolest looking Star Wars characters. I predict that the IG unit will take out those bikers and save the kid.
Excited for next week.

There is a thing I've been thinking about and would like your opinion on it.

So, Baby Yoda seems to know what's happening around him. He helps Mando with the Force, heals people, he trolls with the ship when left alone, but you can't really leave him alone anyway, because he will follow Mando everywhere.

Maybe the Baby knows more than he let's out? Maybe he just can't speak yet? Or maybe Yoda's race has such a strong connection to the Force, that basicly the Force controls his actions sort of like a puppet until the Baby becomes sentient and can think of it's own?

Or maybe I'm overthinking it and at this point Baby Yoda is just like a dog - followig his master around, licking his wounds when they're injured, and barking or attacking when someone tries to hurt his master?

This one didn't do it for me. The thing with mando radioing the guy and that tipping the storm-troopers off, I hate that kind of plotting. You think they'd be able to communicate securely, especially since afaik haven't shown people intercepting comms before. Anyway, didn't like the dialogue either, everything is too direct. The robot training montage was weird as hell and felt out of place.

Yeah this is the one thing I didn't like about the episode. Really should have come up with something better than that. And even then, how did the scouts know EXACTLY where to find them? Did their comm snooping triangulate an exact location in addition to being able to listen to the call? Either way, this was kind of lame.

This is reaching, but you could get on some public wi-fi, grab a Disney+ free trial (one week, credit/debut required, won’t charge until week is up), use the download functionality to grab a few episodes (make sure you pick whatever visual quality setting works best for you), or the movie, and head home with them ready to watch.

Whether or not you want to watch on a phone is up to you, but those screens are pretty big these days.
