The NeoGAF 1 year challenge: stop buying games*

Bought my bro a bunch of PS3 games for his birthday (Persona 4, RE6, Lolli Chainsaw and Catherine).

Other than that, still clean, no bundles, no sales.

I'll give this a try but only until I clear out some pesky games and get my backlog under control. Only planning on one main story playthrough and possible trophy hunting on the side.

Currently playing:
Assassin's Creed Revelations
Ico
Resident Evil 6

Starting soon
Fallout New Vegas
Black Ops 2
Batman Arkham Asylum
Shadow of the Colossus

Hopefully starting by 2013:
Batman Arkham City
Bionic Commando
Child of Eden
Dishonored
Killzone 1 HD
God of War Saga

Hiatus:
Dark Souls (lol)
Disgaea 3

Did pick up a vita but the free ps+ games will be enough for quite a while.

Humble THQ Bundle. Holy shit. If you don't know its probably best not to look it up haha.

---

In other news, Hotline Miami is AWESOME! Only up to chapter 10 or something, but damn, this game is great.

We make exceptions of titles we've already beaten right?

Was about to rebuy Rage and some Ratchet and Clank titles for super cheap. Basically wanted them in my permanent collection.

In preparation for me joining this challenge, I updated my Backloggery with every single game I own (so no emulation), and promptly started crying inside. I will be getting New Super Mario Bros U tomorrow with my Wii U, but Saturday will start my year-long challenge.

There will probably be a couple of games in the year that I want, but I plan to exercise my right to use the escape clause for that. Any new games I get, I will explain in here!

Still haven't felt the urge to buy anything, clearing my backlock is nice

Now playing : persona 2, rogue galaxy and endless space.

if the one year off of buying games is to clear your personal backlog, arent those completed games just going to replaced with all the games you didnt buy during 2013 but will buy after the year is up?

i thought about the plausibility of this situation, then looked at the 2013 Q1 releases. sim city, heart of the swarm, dead space 3, crysis 3, bioshock, animal crossing... yeeeeeahh... its not happening.

I'm too deep in the hole. Not like I would make any larger of a dent in my backlog with just a year either. A better challenge would be "stop browsing GAF/Facebook/Internet and play games with all your free time" instead.

Plus I only really buy games around this time every year anyways. If I buy anything else it's when I'm buying a game when it comes out to play it immediately. Otherwise I just buy everything when I see it has dropped to the lowest price I will probably ever be able to find it.

I think I bought like 20-25 games this past month and didn't pay over $15 for any of them.

So with the escape clause it's actually not "stop buying games" it's "stop adding games to backlog." I may be able to get behind that.

I may be out already. Wasn't planning on getting Far Cry 3, but I'm pretty blown away by the videos I've seen of it. The hype is getting to me. If I can wrap up Hitman before it comes out I'll be good still.

I need to quit entering OTs.

I... may be in a pickle. I bought Syndicate, thinking I would have time to finish it before Far Cry 3 (which I had pre-ordered) arrived. Far Cry 3 arrived a day early :/ So now I started FC3, but I didn't actually finish Syndicate yet... although I will definitely do so even before I finish FC3, because I really like it. Have I been bad GAF?

I've been starting a lot of games recently but haven't finished any yet :/

Edit: wait, I actually have. I finished Max Payne 3 in the first three days of buying it!

You've been appalling. Get back to Syndicate and finish that game before touching FarCry 3.

I've given up buying video games altogether the past year, but that's mainly because I've been busy as fuck with school and work. Picked up a copy of Forza 3 for $10 over the summer, and bought FM 13 when it came out (which was a bad move, SI totally fucked up the match engine this year), and that's it.

I guess that's it for me.
I went to pick up my wii u preorder, saw Mario and ZombiU and couldn't resist. I'm too weak

Good luck to everyone else!

Yes, you were bad. We both know you're not going to get back to Syndicate. Might as well Youtube the ending now and play Far Cry 3 guilt free.

You know what? I did. I was a bit disappointed in the beginning of fc3 so I feel like finishing Syndicate instead.
Lies!

Consider me in.

All my money isn't going to be paid back to me until mid-next year anyway, plus all the games I Kickstarted come out next year.

Oh shit! Our first public casualty... you shall be stricken from the record!

If anybody else has failed, please tell us!

I've been buying games for presents and stuff but not personally, nothing after Black Ops 2. That is okay, right?

EDIT: I did put my Wii U purchase on hold too, however, when I go shopping, Mario Bros. HD on the screens around really does tempt me :(

Update time!

1. Games completed:

Joe Danger (PSN/PS3)

2. New games playing:

Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing (PS3)

3. Games received as gift:

Jetpack Joyride (minis game on PSN)

4. Current games playing:

Jet Set Radio (vita)
Shift Extend (minis/PSP)
Ecco the Dolphin Defender of the Future (dreamcast)

5. Other current games that I haven't played in a while and should be continuing with:

Dead or Alive 4 (xbox 360)
Xenogears (PS1/PSP)
Headhunter (dreamcast)

Jetpack Joyride came unexpectedly, even though it was one of the games I was tempted to buy, I haven't mentioned it to anyone. My BF knew I'd like it anyways and got me the game :D Luckily it's cheap and I'm guessing it's going to be a short game since it's a minis. Not sure when to start on this game.

I'm about halfway through Jet Set Radio, and actually going very quickly through the game even though I'm trying to play it sparringly to make it last longer. It still feels fresh the second time around and somehow I find it even more fun than before on the dreamcast.

About 70 puzzles out of 120 have been cleared with Shift Extend. Again, this feels like a very short game that I'm playing sparringly a few minutes. It seems I could easily finish it and Jet Set Radio if I play them more often.

Ecco The Dolphin is the longer game with quite a bit of content left. The first major story arc has been cleared (out of 4). The game keeps impressing and surprising me with how unique it is even though it clearly also has flaws. It's one of those games that I'd play over all other more perfect games because it has something that is making me very curious and engaged.

Today's the day I officially start my year without buying games (except for Pikmin 3 definitely and probably The Cave).

I'd like to think there isn't masses coming out that I want and that I can work on that darned 400+ backlog!

Update on my backlog-free progress.

- I ran through Halo 4 in about 5 hours.
- Sold 21 games yesterday that I had no interest in either finishing or playing in general. That left me with only games I've beaten 100% and multiplayers, or games I truly love like ME.
- Deleted 95% of the games on my computer.
- Still need to beat Dishonored & Kingdoms of Amalur, but I may sell the former and save the latter for the far future.

The only games I have coming are pre-ordered Far Cry 3 and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The latter I'll run through quick and probably sell immediately (unless the girlfriend wants it); the former will be my main game for months.

That should wrap it up for a while.

I finished Syndicate! That was pretty great. No to focus solely on Far Cry 3, I'm hoping I'll enjoy it more than I have so far.

Day 1 Summary: December 1st 2012

MY BACKLOGGERY

Completed games: 0
Games started: 1
New games purchased: 0

BUSY day today. Didn't really get to game until about 5pm.

- I played a few levels of New Super Mario Bros U; I'm trying to get all of the Star Coins and also endeavouring to savour the game, so I'm not in a huge rush.
- Managed to finally progress in Xenoblade Chronicles, and will hopefully have this wrapped up within the next few days (which would tie in with my target to beat it before the New Year).
- Started up Epic Mickey 2 (Wii version) since my friend finally got a copy and I agreed that I didn't want to start until he had his copy.

I have also been playing little dribs and drabs of Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters on my 3DS XL; I got it for free when I bought Kid Icarus: Uprising, and never played it (it's thus far my only incomplete non-Ambassador Virtual Console game on my 3DS, since I'd long resolved that I would only buy one game at a time and not get another until I beat what I was playing - this being a freebie kind of messed that up). I don't know how long the game is but it's a good bedtime thing.

The only game I'm buying next year is The Last of Us. If it comes out late 2013 I could wait until the end of the year to purchase it.

I have been staying strong so far but I got semi addicted to sports games so I have no progress in my backlog. I just need to pick something and start it.

I stopped buying games and started getting them for free. Already won 3 games on steamgifts since I signed up for the challenge.

Week 4:
Games bought - 1
Games finished - 2
Backlog - still loads.
Now playing - Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, Virtue's Last Reward, Army of Two

Created a Backloggery and updated it with all of my console games (gotta do that to Steam titles too). No games bought since Theatrhythm which is a success.

I've been in something of a slump, I've been browsing through my Steam library and can't find a game to hook me, so I've been playing Lollipop Chainsaw. So far it's pretty great, though I forsee that Suda51 thing of every gameplay element overstaying its welcome, so we'll see.

I've been trying to start up Shadow Hearts on emulator but eh...

So basically, still going, though I could use some new stuff.

I may try this!

Finished ME3 a few days ago, amazing, amazing game.

Gonna try SWTor and maybe get into Aion again (both f2p heh)

Now playing The Darkness II on PC, and after that I wanna get into Skyrim again. OR play Resonace (point and click adventure)
Also some LoL, TF2 and Hotline miami on the side

Dear god typing it all out like this....

Finished: Tomb Raider Legend
Started: Red Faction: Armageddon
Playing: Call of Duty: Black Ops, Company of Heroes, Dead Space, Dishonored, Hitman: Absolution, Mark of the Ninja

I'm still at Part I with Hitman, Dishonored and Mark of the Ninja I'm close to finishing and Black Ops and Dead Space I had to restart because I don't remember shit from either.

How about SH1? Is it worth it? It didn't make such a great first impression but might be a timing thing.
I'm in the minority, but I actually like the first Shadow Hearts more than SH: Covenant. The story feels a bit more dark and appropriate. So for me it's Koudelka > SH1 > SH2. I haven't played the last game yet.

Compared to other Japanese RPGs it's average. Not bad in any way, but there are several games I would recommend over it.

Hmm, alright. I'm drifting from and between games right now, trying to find one that really grabs me, so I'll leave it for some other time.

Finished the first half of Super Mario galaxy. Onward to the Green Stars!

Steam tempted me this morning. Goddamn Steam.
