The Netflix Recommendation Thread of Dope Movies

Just watched Lymelife the other day and thought it was a great flick. Not much to it - just everyday folks' lives sprinkled with a little drama, but the acting is great all around. It really engaged me despite being an ostensibly "plain" movie. Stars Alec Baldwin and a couple of the Culkin brothers.

Is now on streaming. Getting ready to start it.

Warrior's a great movie. Also enjoyed Margin Call (based on recommendations here) quite a bit.

And I like Captain America. It's not a masterpiece but it's perfectly watchable. :p

God Bless America is a really good movie. Unfortunatly the recent shootings will probably kill it for most people. I saw it before the whole Batman attack.

It works great as satire, but this is a very unfortunate time for it to be widely available.

Yeah I thought the same as I was watching last night. Hilarious movie though and the girl was brilliant. One upped Hit Girl for sure.

Awesome! Been dying to see God Bless America. A damn shame it didn't make it to our theaters here.

Ditto, and I'm about to start it right now. Thanks for the heads up!

Wow Hunter looks kind of interesting too. double thanks.

Hunter was pretty good.

GBA on the other hand was exceptionally awful. I'm still a bit agitated about it, so I'll hold off on typing up my thoughts until I've had some time to settle. The people responsible for this film aren't nearly as clever as they think. It's pretty gross, and not for being gratuitous, but for being stupid and contradictory. It fails as satire, so what remains is just offensive tripe. But as I said, real impressions sometime later.

Just wanted to come in here and say thanks for recommending this. I haven't laughed this hard at something in years; already spreading it like a disease among my group of friends

Haven't watched my DVDs in a long time but the commentary is quite good as well.

Anyone else here watch Amazon Prime Instant video? I've been hooked on that for the last month, as opposed to Netflix. I've been digging the selection.

Haters whatever. You don't get budget and scale like Dante's Peak much anymore.

Movie is just out of control.

Also, love the way The Kid is credited in Meet Bill. Owned that movie since I saw it as a pre-street working at Hollywood Vid.

Any one have any problems streaming "Death at a Funeral" the British version?

In U.S. on ps3, it will play the video for about 10 seconds then freeze, but the audio & subtitles keep going.
Already tried other movies that go up to x-hd and it seems to only be Death at a Funeral.

I can fast forward to see another couple of seconds of footage then it freeze again and the audio keeps going.

I've used it to watch some classic British comedies that don't seem to be showing up on Netflix anymore or just never did. Stuff like Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. With the PS3 app I've spent more time lately with it and it's a pretty good service. Still a ways to go before you can compare it to Netflix though.

I'd like to toss in a recommendation for Bleak House.

Great story (Dicken's novel for those that don't know), great cast, great acting, great costume/set design, etc.

BONUS: It has the gorgeous Gillian Anderson and Tywin Lannister as a heartless bastard.

Just watched Mary and Max. I've never heard of it before, but it's a wonderful, mature stop-animation movie voiced by Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Toni Collette. Was this movie a thing when it came out?

God Bless America is really a hamfisted movie where the director goes out of his way to show that American people are stupid and shallow as he tries to stitch it together with a threadbare script. this is not satire, it's a rant. the characters are not credible, the pace is all wrong, you can't sympathize with anyone and nothing is really believable. if the main character is so aggravated by idiotic TV and radio, why does he keep the fucking things on? you can spend an evening without a TV and you can drive without a radio.

anyway, social critique is one thing and good movies are another, they do not necessarily have to merge. in this case, they didn't.

:lol I was wondering the same fucking thing!

Is there anyway to turn autoplay off. It drives me crazy when eps are greyed out and now i basically have to leave before the episode is done or it autoplays the next one

It isn't a social critique though. Bobcat has said its a dark comedy. Just like World's Greatest Dad and the other movie he's made about bestiality(forgot the title).

Odd, I remember having an autoplay option at one point, but not in many months. I wish it would come back, to be honest.

Are you watching on PC or one of the game system?

It's incredibly irritating, especially in episodes where it activates during scenes over credits. And frankly, Netflix, sometimes I WANT to watch the credits!

I have netflix on PC and as far as I know there is no autoplay option.

Just watched God Bless America last night. At the risk of sounding like a misanthrope, it was fantastic to watch this man live out some of my darker fantasies in response to society's ills, although the ending was a bit so-so. Throughout the film, I was cheering and asking, "okay.. who are they going after next? Haha!"

Still: Highly Recommended!

I'm pissed that girl didn't get her escalade

Wow, started to watch Sleeping Dogs Lie, but nearly ended up throwing up within the first minute.

Really had no idea what I was getting into with that one.

Netflix is (in)famous for testing different interfaces on different users. It's auto-playing the next episode for me. I tested with both South Park and Snuff Box. It's pretty annoying. I wish there were an option to turn it off.

Just the watched The Objective (2008). Pretty interesting little mystery about a special forces team looking for something in the mountains of Afghanistan (the guy leading the team won't exactly say what the objective is). I was expecting it to be absolutely horrible judging from the middling review average, but it held my attention. A couple of pretty creepy scenes. Didn't like the ending particularly, but I am glad I watched it. Fans of things like the Twilight zone should enjoy it.

The Hunter (2011)- Really enjoyed this one. It's about a hunter being hired to track down the Tasmanian Tiger, which is believed to be extinct. Some of the outdoor shots and the overall mood of the movie was fantastic. I really dug the wilderness scenes, but the in-town parts had an incredible awkward tension to them. Highly recommend this one.

Just thought I'd give a heads up that the complete series of Everybody Loves Raymond will be added 9/1.
I wonder if there's any chance that King of Queens (also a CBS show) could be coming soon as well. That would make my year.

I like how when you watch a movie it instantly gives you 3 movie suggestions though. Just watched Fresh, its a documentary on how our current system of growing is unsustainable and how we need to go back to smaller farmers and stop using chemicals and antibiotics on our farms. If only they'd keep this and get rid of auto play when i watch tv shows

I actually hate that screen that comes up. When I watched Enter the Void, the suggestions screen came up five minutes before the credits rolled. Not all films end just as the credits roll, and even so, I'd like to see the credits (I know you can cancel out of it and go back, but still). Really wish you had the option to turn that feature off.

Yeah that really irritates me. The movie I was watching last night had additional scenes mixed in with the credits. It kinda reminded me of watching a TV show and having the credits being interrupted with, "ON THE NEXT EPISODE OF...." I hope they do something about that.
