Thanks!

There are a few ideas I had that I scrapped originally that I can bring back. I need to start getting quotes now in case we get that far.

The most obvious one is putting the games logo on the draw bag. It's not super expensive, and would look kind of nice.

I originally thought about upgrading the draw bag to the velvet like material that crown royal uses, but I don't know if it fits the theme. I've also considered going with a burlap bag look, but it might be too itchy and expensive. But I can always ask for quotes.

The more expensive one that was suggested by the guy who runs slothninja.com is a tracking system for immigrant groups. I'm still trying to figure out a good way to do this, but it's pretty nice online to know exactly how many immigrants of a given group someone controlled the last round so you can easily figure out where to hit them hardest. Might be kind of hard to do so that's more of a "maybe" idea.

Beyond those, I'm not entirely sure. Anyone have any ideas?

By the way, thanks for the shoutout/heads up about it on the Gamers with jobs podcast!

The idea of addressing the Tammany Hall marker on the board to make it look cooler/fit the theme (another piece?) would be cool.

We've talked a bit about doing something with the Tammany hall artwork on the board, but that may not be a stretch reward. Just a fix.

On a random question, anyone play sentinels of the multiverse? I'm backing at the 110 level for basically everything. I like coop games and comics. plus it's an established franchise with a decent ranking.

Yeah... having laptop power adapter issues that are preventing that right now.

Remember, save everything to the cloud!

also, it might be cool if you recolored the gray background to green or something, would help set apart the achieved goals / stretch goals a bit more than just the small check mark

I have played it a few times. It is good fun, I met the designers art PAX East this year too. There is a lot of reading on the cards, and since there are a lot of rules that change based on cards you really have to stay on top of the game while playing.

The expansion bosses are really hard too. you should read through the heroes ahead of time because some bosses just destroy certain heroes that is is not even worth playing with that bad combination.

So I've got some Amazon credit from trading in some textbooks and I'm thinking about getting Mage Knight? Any thoughts on this game other than it is good? What are some comparably good games in this price range or lower (sitting in the 60s on Amazon) that I should look at too?

I haven't been gaming for too long, and I mostly have things like Dominion, Lord of the Rings LCG, Elder Sign, Quarriors, etc. I'm looking for something a bit meatier.

Played quite a few games last night. We did Dungeon Petz, Get Bit, Rattus, and BSG Express.

Dungeon Petz - Picked this up because while I love the theme of Dungeon Lords I just could see how to successfully get it played. The Dungeon portion of the game just seemed too daunting to teach so I traded it away. So because I love the theme of Dungeon Lords I picked up Petz on a whim. Dungeon Petz is a hard game to wrap your head around. The mechanics are fairly simple but the puzzle of actually raising your pet is a brain burn. I ended up just barely winning in the final exhibition so that was nice.

Get Bit - I learned Table Top got the rules wrong on this one. It's an enjoyable super light filler. I don't think it's one I'd want to own, but if I had 20 minutes to kill I wouldn't turn down a game.

Rattus - Meh. It wasn't a bad game but I don't think I would be clamoring to play it again. Put cubes on the board move the rats, rinse, repeat, yawn. Maybe the expansion roles add more to the game, I don't know.

BSG Express - First time playing with three. I'm surprised it actually as well as it did with three. I ended up as a Cylon by the sleeper phase and was able to barely pull out a victory by destroying Galactica. Really liking this game.

There are no comparably good games to Mage Knight ;)

Mage Knight is a really cool card puzzle game. It's actually not much of a deck builder, in a typical game you might only add 5-10 cards to your deck, unlike Dominion where you go from 10 cards to 50+ a lot of the time. It's more of a deck tweaking game with more of a focus on trying to squeeze the most you can out of the cards you get. That's the puzzle part. Your first few games you will spend a lot of time trying your turn out a few different ways so it can take a long time to play. It's actually a lot of fun, though, because at first you'll think there's no way I can get over there and kill that goblin dude but after you try playing your cards a couple of ways you might find you actually had the perfect combination of cards. That part is super satisfying.

Fortunately it works really well solo so you can get a few practice games in before trying to add new people. When you do add some players in the rulebook comes with a ton of variants so you can play the game a bunch of different ways depending on what your group likes. It's pretty flexible from full on co-operative to all out PvP.

If you do decide to go for it I'd recommend not having more than 1 new player in a game at a time. It's an amazing game but sitting 2-3 new people down to it could lead to a 5+ hour game easily and scare everyone off, there's just a lot to process and a lot of testing things out. But man, if you manage to find yourself a couple of people who are really into the game you are in for some awesome good times.

So anyone else excited about Mice and Mystics? I just saw that it is number one in the hotness on BGG and from what I've seen it could be a huge hit.

It looks fun, i really dig the look of the components :p.

After a long gaming hiatus, I played Agricola again with my recently arrived NL Deck. Some of the cards are really unique, I'll definetively play a few more games before moving onto the World Championship deck.

Also tried Caveman Curling, it's nothing special (the extra layers on top of curling are very shallow) but it's lots of fun for such a small package.

FInally got around to Mystery Express. Played with my parents and wife. Tons of fun.
This was on my radar for a while but I remember hearing negative stuff about how some of the deductions work. Something to do with the way time is handled? It's been a while.

The deduction mechanic works kind of like Clue. The difference is there are two of each card so you have to make sure you saw the card twice in a round to be able to tick it off your sheet. I personally like Mystery Express. It solves the roll and move problem I have with Clue and adds more of a challenge. It's also easy to get to the table with nongamers because everyone is familiar with Clue.

Got Mage Knight to the table for a learning game with three. I'd say it took about an hour and a half to teach. Three hours to play. There was a lot to communicate, but I think we got it right. And my sense is that everybody dug it and wants to play again so that's a win.

Just spent a week gaming at the beaches in Outer Banks, NC. Out of all the new games I played I think Ora & Labora is probably the best. The worst is a toss up between New England Railways and Lords of Vegas.

What is the general opinion on Munchkin games? I have never played but it looks simple and fun, with co-op and backstabbing. The silly theme would go over very well too. As a game to introduce some friends and their non-gaming spouses, should I get Munchin Quest (board game) or Munchkin Deluxe (card game)?

You're likely not going to get the positive feedback you expect on Munchkin on here ;) It's a gateway game that appeals to a /lot/ of people because of the theme, 'take that' mechanics & randomness. But once you strip away the jokes, there's really not much of a game there compared to a lot of other modern euros, so it's got a bit of a bad rap in certain circles.

But it works for a lot of people. I'd stick with the card game over the board game.

Probably playing this tonight at game night! We beat it on Novice last time (partially because I had brushed up on iPad) so going to try Normal. :D
I need to come up with a decent strategy. Like I said I can't win even on the intro level.

Never played myself but the main complaint I hear is the humor wears off really fast and the gameplay just isn't good enough to maintain interest. So if you are just getting it for the humor stay away.

Played the TTR India map today, it's very well designed. My original plan to do one giant loop was obviously crushed midgame. Lots of fun.

Played it for the first time a few days ago myself. It's a very fun new mechanic -- feel like it can lead to serious analysis paralysis though. That map is tight in a 3P game and if everyone is going for Mandala forget it.

That and I could never fully understand the rules.

Played Space Alert tonight (finally!) -- lots of fun. Pretty cool to be able to play a full pretty complex co-op in just 20m. Want to reread all the rules but I really dug it. Ghost Stories is still my top co-op but this may be close behind after a few more plays.

I have yet to play this (although I own in) Is it best to play a "practice" game first if none of my group have played it before?

I played 7 Wonders a few weeks ago. It seemed kind of random about how you get the cards early on, and it was SUPER confusing to me. I watched an entire game while kind of reading the instructions and didn't really understand stuff.

But then I played it when they played again, and I won, so it wasn't too bad to pick up. I'm just afraid it would be too complicated for my parents if I got it for them for Christmas.

Definitely. We thankfully had one peson who taught the rest of us, but one person needs to have the rules down pat. There's a lot of documentation to go through, but once you're through that it's actually a pretty simple game.

It is tricky. For true casuals it's actually not quite a LW imo. I think TTR is a better pick as a gateway, and I've learned that lesson the hard way.

I keep hearing about how it's a great entry game and stuff.
The actual gameplay is simple enough - choose a card, pass it on.

Even the strategies or whatever end up being pretty simple.

But I found the game incredibly hard to teach to non-gamers. The amount of symbols and card types (colours) and having it all thrown in your face at once, and having to watch your neighbours play areas in addition to your own, seems to be pretty overwhelming. I'm not very good at teaching games, but I've had much better luck teaching other ones. I find 7 Wonders to be one of the harder games to teach, especially considering what it is once you know how to play it.

Yep, it suffers from a lesser case of RFTG Syndrome. SYMBOLOGY

Now that I've banged out Space Alert, I think the next game I need to dust off and play from my backlog is Merchants & Marauders. I remember being slightly overwhelmed by the rules for a game I hoped would be more of a romp, but then I also remember a few in here liking it. Thoughts? Can I fully teach and play it within three hours?

I played 7 Wonders for the first time last weekend. Although it's a bit overwhelming and I had to ask about every other card's meaning or so at first it's actually quite elegant in my opinion. I ended up winning both rounds we played, although I'm not sure if I'd win again next round :)

If I wanted to get somebody into board games it wouldn't be my first choice, though.

7 wonders isn't too hard to teach if at least one person knows it really well. If you just play a single game hands up without worrying too much about things then it will go much faster. People only really start to understand the game once you score a couple of games. The game is pretty quick though so it allows for a few quick learning games.

It's not that hard to do. I've done it a few times.

It'll take about 30 minutes or so and the game is roughly two hours long, maybe a little longer with brand new players. There are a couple things you can do to get the game time down. You can always make the win condition less than 10 points that's by far the easiest thing you can do.

The longest part of the game is port actions and combat. You can help move the port actions along by having two players do their port actions if they don't affect each other. We will usually do this towards the end of the game in order to help sped things up. By then people are comfortable with the system and don't need too much guidance.

The game fun, really damn fun and it's a shame you can't get it to the table.

I'm pretty sure I could teach 7 Wonders to my friends fairly well had I played it in advance of introducing it, which would have helped a lot. When we tackled it earlier this year it was a "Let's all gather round and read the rules" situation (the worst way to learn a game, in my experience) and out of the 15 or so (fairly light-medium) games I own, I found it to be the biggest hurdle for my group yet. Mainly due to the symbology and the fact that it appears more complicated than it is. Once you play through a single game, it all clicks fairly quickly. It benefits from being able to play 3 or so games in a row in the same time as many other games, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a first gateway game.

I had really good success for the last 2 game nights by showing video breakdowns of each game before playing.

I try to watch all of the ones that are available for a game and pick the one that explains the game the best and goes thru the basics of play in around 10 to 15mins.

Then we play the game and I answer any questions as we go.

Its been much more successful then me trying to teach 3 to 4 people all new to the game at once

For 7 wonders it seemed to help seeing it before playing..especially how the scoring breaks down at the end of the game.
I used Drakkenstrike's 7 Wonders Components Breakdown Video Review

I hate when that happens. Think a game is light enough, but nope. Spend the whole time worrying whether they'll ever game with you again, or if you ruined everything hehe

Started playing the Resistance card game with some friends. It's a nice modern take on Mafia but the problem is you really need more people to have fun and you need to play at least a few rounds before everyone gets a hand and learns some strategy.

Played some party game this weekend called Nuclear Escalation. It's kind of like Bang!, but with most of the fun sucked out of it. I eliminated 1 player before their first turn, and was then eliminated myself before I got a full turn. Then the game took 2 hours to finish. Awesome!

On a totally unrelated note, I'm talking to a couple of European publishers about importing/publishing a couple of titles in the US/Canadian markets.

Are there any games that lack a US edition that you guys think need to be imported?

I just got an email that Cards Against Humanity and its expansion will be back in stock on Amazon next week. The base game you can go ahead and order, but Amazon keeps giving me an error when trying to order the expansion.
