The monitor also offers flicker-free and reduced blue light features to avoid tiring users' eyes. The LED backlighting produces a wide dimming range all the way down to 1 per cent of maximum brightness. Brightness can be set to adjust automatically depending upon the environment, thanks to EcoView Optimizer 2. Furthermore, to help you conserve energy, a presence sensor detects when you leave your desk to automatically switch to power saving mode then back on when you return.

The FlexScan EV2730Q will be available from Q1 2015, depending upon your region. We weren't given any pricing indications.

Assuming the price isn't crazy, I'm thinking these could eventually replace my trio of 16x10 monitors in my home office. Would be perfect for dev work.

But why not this...
Rotate.jpg

I have two on either side vertical. Even with them being 16x10, the then horizontal real estate isn't great for a lot of apps (though web browsing is ace).

Not to mention, the differing aspect ratios makes dragging/snapping/etc kind of bo bo.

Looks goofy at a glance, like 5:4 monitors, but I understand the appeal. I dislike 16:9 monitors for everything except movies. I'm assuming Eizo makes their own panels.

It's not at all conducive to our anthropomorphic field of view so for most applications, this is 100% pointless. Content producers and professional editors/designers will always be using multiple monitors anyway so I have no idea who this product is for.

I could see it being useful in specialty setups though where you need to replace an older square monitor with something modern. Arcade cabinets come to mind.

If you don't see the rationale for it, you don't need it.

For working on content creation (dev, art, etc) in a multi-monitor environment, it would be very useful.

Its like two HD monitors stacked atop one another.
Exactly ... which is kind of a pain to do with two literal monitors.

b-b-but why not a widescreen monitor with the same height as these....?
I prefer a 3 monitor solution for my workflow. 3 monitors like that would be insanity in terms of footprint (and head movement lol). I suspect more expensive as well. Granted since these are niche, that may not matter.

So we've gone full circle by going back to full square monitors?

I don't really see the point in these especially with regular multimonitor setups being more popular and affordable than ever. I can see some people buying or prefering them over the usual aspect ratios, but this isn't going to be anything but a niché product.

But hey, it's nice that it exists. The more options the better.

Is this why you're so slow at work? You only have 2 monitors?

3 widescreen monitors takes up a lot of real estate and causes way too much side to side head movement. Basically there's a ton of wasted (non-existent) vertical space that would make more sense.

As stated previously, having a mix of horizontal and vertical monitors also brings in plenty of other usability issues.

yup :D

Eh, a neat idea but I think I prefer having two separate monitors. Less fiddling as far as lining windows up goes.

Also the price will probably be nuts.

It is about the resolution. Though I would just get one of those extra wide screen monitors over this. Like 21:9

Yeah, I just did some rough calculations and in order to get the ~18.7in height of this monitor in widescreen form you'd need around 38in diagonal, which is pretty huge!

I GUESS I can see the appeal for this kind of monitor in certain situations (lots of vertical code space, uhhh), but right now I've got a 16:9 and a 4:3 2-monitor setup and I get by just fine. I guess I'd have to trial it for a bit to see the benefits, as not many come immediately to mind.

Could be a viable alternative to my 3rd monitor, which is a portrait 16:10 used exclusively for terminal work.

I guess with this I could run TWO ssh windows at once (though I wouldn't because tmux exists)

Also I'd probably need a more robust window snap feature to get behind their use cases as manually resizing windows to fit the screen perfectly is a major pain (<3 love u windows snap)

You could tmux split pane!
