The new iPad |OT|

Using a screen protector at all is silly. Get a smart cover or similar case that protects the screen in transit but leaves it naked so you can fully enjoy the screen.

I will attribute any grey hairs and wrinkles I get later in life to trying to put those fucking things on without bubbles, too.

I am so horrible at that.

I'm 10 minutes away from opening my WalMart bought one - I've been waiting all day to see if my Apple.com ordered one would show up, so I could return the WalMart one unopened. I know, that as soon as I open the WalMart one, the UPS guy will show up.

yeah. i got a dark gray smart cover and i think i might let the ipad go nude like my vita. i treat my devices with enough respect to not mess up the screen.

With more GPU juice in these mobile devices than ever before, I keep imagining how much further gaming on them could progress if there were some proper, widely-adopted hardware controls. Something like an official Apple gaming controller/handle, with buttons and analog joysticks.
Yeah I can't see it happening. Closest we're gonna get is the OnLive controller being compatible.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but transferring my grandfathered AT&T unlimited data plan from my OG iPad was a complete suprise! I've now got unlimited data on LTE for the same $30! Yeehaw!! Screen is a beaut, especially with comics.

I also got the Casecrown cover and the sleep/wake feature works without problem. I bought mines earlier this week so maybe they made some last minute changes?

This is also my first tablet and I didn't notice the screen was warm until people here mentioned it. It looks normal, but I don't own the previous iPad to compare.

My new iPad will be here tomorrow woooo!!

Refurb iPad 2 for my iPad 2 which stopped working yesterday. Apple store didn't have replacements in stock and had to order one :/

My screen is actually much, much cooler than my iPad 2 screen. I'm thrilled.

Looks like supply is way more then demand for once from apple based off ebay and seeing tons still available at best buy and walmart. Guess I will return the other 2 i bought. Can you return them to an apple store if you bought them online?

Will be picking mine up later today.
Question: Will iTunes ask me if I want to do a clean install or restore backup? If I do a clean install, will it clear out my contacts/gamesaves/bookmarks/etc? If yes, how can I transfer just those?

good to hear yours works, I just ordered a casecrown cover anyway. I like the design and had just decided to manually press the sleep button, but if it ends up working, even better.

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT use a matte finished screen protector. FUCK. my wife brought one and it aint pretty.
I used to have a matte MediaDevil screen protector on my iPad 2. Happy to have tried it and all, but I certainly wouldn't use it again on the new iPad (even when disregarding the impact the blur effect would have on the retina display.)

That's partly due to the cheap feeling of matte plastic to the touch, but also because yes, the reflections are less distracting - but they're still there. It's the exact same amount of light bouncing off as before, so it doesn't become any more useful outdoors, and that rough surface just feels weird.

It's glass, why do you need a screen protector?
I've actually had quite a few glass screens scratch up myself, just from long-term daily use (no car keys in bags, or anything) so I can totally understand the idea. Helps on the future resale value also.

Used the following apps:

IBooks and Kindle: Text looks great on both, but yellowing of the screen sucks with white background. Using sepia instead helps with that.

Netflix - ultra warm temp makes videos look nice, in addition to the screen itself. iPad didn't heat up while playing an episode of Portlandia.

Angry Birds - not updated for retina but still looks and plays like Angry Birds. No issues whatsoever.

Entertainment Weekly App - the magazine looks great on here, and it's cool to have every single cover included whereas via mail you usually only get 1. Dany from Game of Thrones looks great in Retina.

Words With Friends - looks good not great. Much like Angry Birds and other games, it needs a retina upgrade.

I just had almost the worst experience at an Apple store. I posted earlier that I got my ipad via fedex today and it had a dent on multiple places. I called the Apple store and they said bring it on in for exchange.

So I get to the Apple store and speak with a so called specialist. I tell her calmly that I just got this ipad in the mail and it has multiple dents and scratches right out the box. I haven't even booted the thing up yet. She goes to the back to talk with a manager and she came back almost 10 mins later. She tells me they're out of black 32gb wifi only models and they would have to call me when they got more in. I was skeptical at first because the story was rocking with people buying ipads, but I just gave her my name and number. I told her that I was really disappointed and I'm sure my body language showed I was pretty heart broken.

I wanted to rage out in the middle of the store and go off on her, but it wasn't her fault so I held back any anger I wanted to show. Then as I'm walking back to my car I get a phone call from her saying that someone just returned a ipad that was my model. I go back to the store and wait in line. While I'm waiting a guy in front of me gets a card stating which model he wants to buy. Guess what model it was....32gb black wifi only!!!

They had lied to be about their stock for whatever reason and I was pissed. The girl came out and pulled me out of the line. We did the exchange and I was really just happy to get my fucking ipad after going through so much.

I am going to write to Apple for whatever it's worth and let them know what happened. I have no idea why they would like about their inventory and not want to exchange my ipad. I think after she told me they were out of stock and she saw how devastated I was she felt really bad and was able to talk her manager into getting me another one.

Anyway back to playing with my ipad. I hope no one has to go through what I did to get theirs.

Is there an option for the brightness setting in iBooks to only change for the app and not for the entire iPad? If not, that's another huge plus in the Kindle apps favor. Dictation seems very limited but is great for entering passwords and numerical chains.

Any tips for transferring game saves from an iPhone to iPad?

It would not let me do a full restore from an iPhone backup so I had to re-download everything. btw, I have a PC... no Mac.

Sucks that Apple didn't force cloud saving when they launched iCloud.

I'm not really understanding what the problem was. They initially told you they didn't have inventory. They then contacted you when they did have inventory... and you got your iPad. I'm not really sure what kind of redress you're entitled to because you walked half-way to your car and then had to walk back to the Apple store. You didn't really "go through so much".

I got one! Waho!

So I need Netflix, a good free comic app, a way to file manage without iTunes, and a good way to stream mkvs from a windows share.

Halp!

ComicGlass update!

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes. THIS is what the iPad is for. I'm flicking through full pages of comics without feeling the need to zoom in! And if I move my eyes closer it just looks better!

Wonderful.

I wish I had a better camera to take pictures because this looks ridiculously good. I can actually read two pages side-by-side with no problem.

You didn't read my entire post....When I came back the 2nd time I was waiting in line and they were selling black 32gb wifi only models of the ipad. They told me they were out of stock. Otherwise the man in front of me wouldn't have gotten a voucher to purchase one. They lied to me about being out of stock.

Plus, I pre ordered right after the keynote and had one shipped to me today. The one that was shipped was damaged and I had to drive 30 mins out wasting my time and gas trying to get a replacement. The last thing I expect when I drop 600 on a device is to be lied to about your inventory so you just get me out of your store.

Yeah, I get why you're pissed. They clearly told you they had no stock to directly replace your broken unit when they clearly did. Happy it worked out for you.

Someone please write a code to include this post as the first one every time "first world problems" is mentioned. You got to be kidding.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Calm down man, it wasn't that big of a deal.

I've had an iPad 2 for around a year, and for those of you new to the tablet, I'd really advise against getting a screen protector. The only thing they do is make the quality of the screen look worse. You do not need a screen protector. Short of taking your keys to it, it ain't gonna scratch.

Personally, I do have a shell (cover/case for the back) that looks similar to this one:

5156_Speck%20SmartShell%20Case%20(SPK-A0530)%20for%20iPad%202%20-%20Clear.jpg

I'd totally recommend one, not mainly because of protecting the back from scratches, but because I find the back of the iPad to simply be slippery, especially when you're resting it on even slightly polishes surfaces (wood, plastic, etc). Shop around to see which plastic material you find offers the best grip and look.

I also own an Apple Smart Cover, just because of its convenience. On the off chance that a maniac takes a key to the screen (or a drink spills in my bag or whatever), it's pretty well protected, but it's also super convenient for use as a stand. It's definitely not necessary, but I enjoy the perks it brings.

But yeah, totally recommend the back case, totally don't recommend any kind of film screen protector.

So Neogaf.com is getting cut off on the sides when I have the new iPad in vertical mode. Other VBulletin sites are fine and I can't find any Safari settings to help with this. Any ideas?

I used iexplorer (or something like that, can't remember the name) to transfer all of my angry birds data from my 3gs to my 4s. Worked perfectly and is really simple to do.
