Oh, and just a heads up. The 50% off Maroo case deal is only on until 12:30pm PACIFIC TIME. That's in less than an hour.

In a way I can almost picture a far flung future where the Macbook line is dead. Which sounds crazy because laptops are so huge right now. But I can totally see a future where laptops are a thing of the past and you just have your big iMac and an iPad and transition seamlessly between them with the help of iCloud.

Those cases all look really bulky to me. My favorite thing about Smart Cover type cases is that I can rip them off entirely and toss them aside when I'm using the iPad and just throw it back on when I'm done.

I don't want to leave the thing in it's case forever. Did that for the OG iPad and I hated how it felt when it was cased. Heavier and thicker. Bleh.

I think I am going the pouch route for my iPad with a "smartlike" cover in order to prop it up.

What companies make the smart-cover like cases again?

When i got my ipad 1 I found a netbook sleeve that fit it perfectly. I used the iPad without a case and just it in the sleeve when transporting it.

It's actually pretty easy to take off and put on.

That's sort of the combo I have going on right now, except replace "iMac" with "terrible Dell desktop at work". I never really touch my laptop at home (my wife uses it mostly) and just use my iPad for home use. Desktop at work, iPad at home.

Speaking of laptops, these three weeks without an iPad has made me realize how much of a pain it is to use a laptop for casual tasks. Maybe not a pain but certainly less enjoyable.

Same here. The fact that the smart cover is so easily removable is nice. When using the iPad I rarely have the smart cover on. Just slap it on there when it's not in use or when I need to prop up the iPad to type.

aww that's not cool. I'll have to look into that, as it's the first mention i've seen from many owners. what did you think of the color combination otherwise? also, did you try any leather sprays or cleaners to mitigate the staining?
Nah. brown/green looks alright and I got compliments from lots of people. Black is more inconspicuous and I'd rather have to be honest.

I think I may go with the LTE flex rate plan from Rogers

I am paying $20/month for data sharing but under flex it's

$7 for 10 MB
$17 for 250 MB
$37 for 5 GB

Considering I rarely take my iPad out and leave it on wifi only and usually only use it on certain occasions (like the need to watch a big sports game) this deal ain't so bad - it could potentially allow me to save money over the course of a year

Even though I do think the 10 MB is laughable (considering that's potentially 2-3 seconds of network time)

Does Rogers support the hotspot feature?

Yup! (supposedly)

They have had no issue with hotspot in the past, either.

I can't even imagine how unbearable it would be to read about everyone messing around with their new devices while I waited to use my own. I'm already dreading Friday morning because I'll be camped in my living room just waiting for the delivery guy to show up while refreshing this thread and peeping my RSS feed and just reading non-stop reviews and impressions while I wait for my own precious.

1st world problems..

I talked my boss into letting me work from home so I can accept the delivery. Thursday night is Iowa State's NCAA game, Friday iPad, then weekend!

I actually wish the iPhone would die too. If I could literally just have a tablet with a 100mbps wireless connection and not a single other device I'd probably be happy.

Yeah, I'm working from home on Friday as well just to receive the iPad. It's like Christmas!

I think you'd see the iPad die before the iPhone. The iPhone being super portable is going to make it the staple for most people. Being able to make it more useable with accessories will probably be the route it takes.

...like instead of having an iPad and an iPhone you'd have a glass pane that the iPhone AirPlays to and lets you interact with it like it's an iPad. Or your wear a headset and brain-control the interface...something like that.

Technology should eventually progress to a point where just a single pocket sized device should be all we need...before it just moves to an upgradeable implant!

A convertible Macbook is a ridiculous, idea. In my opinion.

OSX and iOS aren't going to merge. They're just going to become extremely similar. Accomplishing the same ideas in different ways tailored to their respective input methods. I'm not really sure what the longterm future of OSX is, since it seems pretty obvious that iOS is now the mainstream Apple OS. But I feel pretty damn confident its not convertible laptops. I mean, think about it.. what would that do the rest of their Mac line? The idea of convertible Macbooks just isn't thinking big enough about the future.

I have *NO* idea what is coming down the road but I'm pretty damn sure tablet/macbook hybrids is not in the cards. "it makes sense" in the way that its something another company would do.
I wouldn't be surprised if they do eventually. One day the iPad will have the power to run desktop-style software. What would be stopping it from merging? iOS isn't just different due to the interface, there is a necessity to keep it less bloated for the hardware. When that necessity disappears... they might as well just have one OS, that optimises itself for any device.

will these even fit the iPad 3? it seems the cases clip your iPad 1 and 2 but the 3 is fatter and thicker so the clipping wont even fit on your iPad and the tightness might even scratch it. can someone confirm?
You can click a field for the new iPad. Also, their return policy is very generous. 30 days, no questions asked.

$22.49 for a nice leather case. Thanks for the link!

Have to always carry a bag with me? Screw that... I'd keep my iPhone over any other device if I had to choose

How is that really any different than merging? You already have (subtle, minor) differences between the iPad, iPod and iPhone versions of iOS. There are also differences in OS X depending on which type of hardware you're running. Having one that is desktop-centric and gives users the ability to more or less have the OS X environment accessible in iOS makes a lot more sense. It's simply a feature that the other devices would be lacking. We're not talking about bolting a mouse cursor into iOS, mind you. A unified OS makes too much sense going forward. Developers, for example, could test apps directly on their laptop, or even touch-enabled iMac or Cinema Displays. Similarly, you could run apps you downloaded to your phone on your computer – lord knows there is no shortage of things on the App Store that would be handy to have on my computer, at least.

If nothing else, I can't imagine why they would even bother with something like Launch Pad, or make iCloud file management behave exactly like iOS if they weren't planning on integrating touch functionality into at least the Macbook line in the near future.

I don't see how Apple ISN'T moving towards a unified OS. Having a split OS in itself runs contrary to Apple's philosophy of everything just working together more than anything.

snack, thank you. I have been case searching since the 7th and you made the search so much easier. Bought the MOKO II just in time to catch the 50% off sale.

Thanks again!

When you purchase the case, they'll have an option to select iPad 3 fitting.

I think that point you're just arguing about naming conventions. Thats nearly identical to the scenario I described of having two OSes that accomplish identical tasks in different ways tailored for their respective inputs. I don't see it happening for branding purposes. At that point we're talking about the death of the Macintosh brand as a whole.. which I don't exactly see.

when you order, there is a box to check for 'this order is for the new ipad' so they will be compatible, might be a delay getting them out to you

Well, thank god that rumor is already here this year. Now we can talk about the iPad Pro that will launch by October.

That's not the future for me, it's the present. I have a Mac Mini as a media hub desktop, and the iPad is my portable computer. The MacBooks are dead as far as I'm concerned.

To the bolded: I just feel a touchscreen on something isn't a tablet (like a cinema display or laptop screen) is inelegant. Thats my personal opinion, and I don't see it becoming a reality because of it. Nobody wants to point at a 30inch display on their desk. Its dumb. Same with a laptop. If you're going to fold your laptop over to use as a touchscreen, why not just use an iPad? Apple certainly has no problem selling you two devices.

To the rest, I agree. I totally envision a future where "universal app" includes the Mac. I just don't think that presupposes the Mac getting touchscreens.

As far as Apple using the iOS style folders and app management on the Mac, etc. I chalk that up to straight jankiness. A misguided attempt at making Apple customers who started out on iOS more comfortable with it's big brother.

same here. and I do basic admin on the mini via iteleport, so no need even to be near it.

Oh man, thanks to snack as well. Just ordered a moko for myself.

Five bucks for international shipping is pretty damn reasonable, too.

Jack Spade has a huge warehouse sale going on right now too. Dream Visions- you'd be better off getting a bag from there than spending $200 on one of those iPad specific bags.

nice. but since I already have a couple of bags to carry All My Shit(tm), I really don't need another big bag. I have a 17" messenger bag and a 17" backpack when I need to carry all the equipment. A small bag for small stuff is the missing link for me, as I've grown tired of having to carry a 17" bag around with me if I want to put just my iPad in a bag.

this is pretty cool

but the colors are puttin' a hurtin' on my vision. might pick it up for my mom who loves red.

high five same here. I am suprised its not the best selling product. those hipster cases below are just plain ugly

Agree. I ordered the MOKO case because of how plain it looks. Not to mention a nice leather case for $22 and free shipping is fucking awesome.

Also if you didn't check the box for new ipad it apparently doesn't matter. I called them twice to confirm.

I have this bag as my simple 'throw ipad and small stuff in' bag:

I used it while on vacation to carry my phone, wallet, loose change, etc. the main pouch area is able to hold the ipad quite easily. They didn't have many colors when I bought it, but probably now they do. It's original intention was to be a travel bag, but is meant to hold an ipad.

er, how can it not matter? I know they said the current case would probably fit, but isn't the camera lens bigger and in a different place?

Here is the email to confirm, plus I called twice:

When I mentioned I forgot to check "for new iPad",

It's fine. Our current cases work for the new iPad.

might be too small for a iPad with a case and a BT keyboard.

Thats wrong

1. The clips hold your iPad and the fatter iPad might get scratched.
2. Camera Lens is bigger. Needs a bigger hole

I honestly just got the Moko for the sake of having something, anything, potentially coming in the mail. And $22 for a leather case with a good return policy fits the bill.

Last year when I got the iPad 2, I found a Belkin iPad 2 case at a Goodwill for $2. It's grey and purple and has a folio closing. I have no idea why it was sitting there in a thrift store so close to the launch. But, if my current Marware CEO Hybrid 2 doesn't fit the 3, I'll throw the 3 in the Belkin until the Moko shows up. What a tangled web.

Just relaying what I was told.

On the phone they assured me the new ipad works perfectly with the case.

If it doesn't, I will just get a refund on that bitch.

Yeah probably, but for just the ipad, charger, phone and some other small stuff it's pretty good really. I'm thinking I'll probably only use a case when I toss my ipad into my backpack for the workweek and then use my small bag on weekends.

UPS etc should have realtime GPS updates on their tracking systems, so you can watch as the truck comes tantalisingly close to your house, only to veer off to service the nearby business park for a few hours, then stop at McDonalds for an hour
