The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Been dying to share my collection since this thread popped up, made sure to alphabetize everything in advance...

IMG_1411.jpg

There's still a few more things I want to get (Mega Man X Collection, Skies of Arcadia Legends, SSX On Tour, and Eternal Darkness), but otherwise I'm very happy.

Also, to another poster's joy, I do own Metal Arms. It is a fantastic game, took me a bit to track down.

My GameCube collection now is much MUCH smaller than it was like 5-7 years ago because I decided to upgrade some games to their HD counterparts or their Wii ports, so I'm just going to list it out of shame.

My Current GameCube Collection:
-Animal Crossing
-Chibi-Robo!
-Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
-F-Zero GX
-Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
-Mario Party 4
-Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
-Metroid Prime
-Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
-Sonic Gems Collection
-Sonic Heroes
-Soul Calibur II
-Star Fox Adventures
-Star Fox Assault
-Super Mario Sunshine
-Super Monkey Ball
-Super Monkey Ball 2
-Super Smash Bros. Melee
-Viewtiful Joe 2
-Wave Race: Blue Storm

The games I used to own but have since upgraded them include:
-Beyond Good & Evil (now on XBLA in HD)
-Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat (now on Wii)
-Ikaruga (now on XBLA in HD)
-Pikmin (now on Wii)
-Pikmin 2 (now on Wii)
-Resident Evil 4 (now on Wii but I can play with a GCN controller!)

I also had to trash my launch GameCube a couple of years back since it wasn't able to read discs anymore. I had the Game Boy Player for it as well and really liked playing GBA games on the big screen. But once my Wii dies and I transfer everything to my WiiU, I'll get a GameCube again with the GBP.

It really is cool though that you can still play most GameCube games on the Wii, but I think what many people don't realize is that with certain Wii games, you can play them with a GameCube controller, essentially expanding your GameCube collection! Not only that but you can use the GameCube controller on ALL Virtual Console games, especially N64 games, which I believe make them more playable since you're playing with a better controller. It's pretty damn cool.

My Wii Games Collection That Use a GameCube Controller:
-Klonoa
-Mario Kart Wii
-Muramasa: The Demon Blade
-Resident Evil 4 (The way it should be!)
-Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
-Sonic Colors
-Super Smash Bros. Brawl (The way it should be!)
-Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

That's a lot of Wii games that use a GameCube controller! Nintendo really got it right with that controller and I for one am really happy that they stuck with it during the Wii era.

I'm actually heading to Tokyo in a few days and I've always wanted one of these. Would anyone know where my best bet finding one would be? Such an awesome unit.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you probably won't find one. They're rarely in stores and on that chance occasion that they are, they're much over-priced. It'll be cheaper just to buy one off eBay.

Seeing this thread made me check Craigslist...

Found the Zelda: Collector's Disk, Paper Mario and Resident Evil 3 for 30 bucks total.

Fuckin' steal.

someone break down PSO on GC for me, i heard I & II brings offline co-op but i saw 2 versions, and no idea if the last one was any good either (might be a card game or something?)

goddamn, you done good! i found a $10 copy of RE 0, might go in on that..still debating

Just picked them up...

The case for Paper Mario is...nonexistent (I already have the PC version), it came in a SPHINX case with manual. Weird.

The cases are all a little shitty, with Gamestop stickers and whatnot...but the inserts are nice, as are the manuals. Disks have some smudges, but scratches are a minimal.

Looks nice rounding out my Zelda collection :D (Two are sealed).

Vegas-GAF Representing?

Yeah, I have four...two sealed still. Their value isn't really increasing so it's just whatever...no point getting rid of them now.

Do it, not getting remade any time soon i'd say.

Thanks very much guys. I just scored a component cable from Nintendo Australia as well. I think it was $46 including shipping to New South Wales.

The guy asked which forum I spotted this on so I guess they've noticed word getting out as well.

Lol busted! me and my big mouth. Always getting in trouble with NAL lol...

Episode III is the card game. It's pretty interesting, and kinda fun in it's own right, but that's definitely not the more exciting PSO game.

Episode I and II is what you want. There's the original release and Episode I and II +. These two are almost totally the same. There are a few new offline quests in +, and some minor changes (I think item duplication might be patched or whatever. I know standing still makes you immune to indi belra shots. That's all I got though). Basically, unless you're crazy into it, I'd just stick to whichever is cheaper. Which I believe is plain old Episode I and II.

It does bring offline co-op, and it's excellent! A shame there's no lan option, but split screens are better than having to go online. Which is probably also worth noting: you can still get online with a private server (as of like a year or so ago when I last tried), allowing you to play many more online only quests.

Edit:
List of co-op games for the GCube?

While I'm talking about PSO anyway, it also applies to this.

You have a Hori pad... You lucky bastard. Giveittomenao! :P

Dude... FIND IT.

Then sell it to me for a reasonable price. ;P LOL!

I don't think I have it anymore. I'm assuming I sold it when i sold my GameCubes?

I have no idea...I bought it when I was in college for like 20 bucks. It was the only thing i ever imported. I imported it so I could use the GameBoy Player with a good controller.

Damnit.....hmm...

EDIT:

yeah, someone must have gotten it for a bargain.

damn this thread

just went in on Skies & made offers for Billy Hatcher and Starfox Adventures, watching a few PSO auctions...i think that's the last of my list, unless i see a cheap copy of Mario Sunshine to re-buy/try again one day

not going in on the Hori pad, it's sharp but ive got this adapter for PS2 controllers if i ever wanted to try that, i figure. i really do love the GC pad though.

You know, I have an adapter for PS2 controllers but it shuts off my GC when I plug it in. Is there one that doesn't do that?

this is a weird question. i want to get into the earlier Resident Evil games, specifically REmake, but i'm hesitant because i've got a fear of spiders/bugs/etc. after encountering the GIANT, HAIRY GODDAMN SPIDER on the back of the box for REmake, i'm wondering what to expect. and if it's bad enough that i should probably just never look at these games again. yes, i am a pussy.

Hey quys. Quick questions. I'm playing through all the Metal Gear games and am about to beat MG2 and move onto MGS. I have MGS for the PS1 but not Twin Snakes. The used game store by my house has it for $30 and I'm thinking of picking it up. I HAVE already played the PS1 MGS and am curious about TS.

So my questions are...
1. Is Twin Snakes really as bad as people online make it out to be?
2. How is it different other than graphics?
3. Is it worth the $30 price tag?

Thanks!

EDIT: Brain lapse. Its actually $30, not $20.

kinda answered your own question there...i mean, that spider's not the only big scary creature if that's what you're asking, heh

1) i don't think so, no. see # 2 and come to your conclusions.
2) there's a few things here that i recall offhand:
-First person shooting is now an option, which some consider game-breaking. it does admittedly make shit easier, in rooms that were kinda fixed camera angle without it.
-Mei Ling's voice isn't so stereotypically DID YOU RIKE IT anymore, you may or may not care about this
-redone cutscenes are EXTREEEEEME/john woo slo-mo flips and shit, i thought some were cool and some were cheesy at the time

there's other bits here & there but i wanna say those are the largest changes
3) if you can get it for $30 and wanna replay MGS1, i think so yeah. OG version is of course fantastic but the graphics are dated, this is obviously an improvement there. if nothing else, you can prolly sell it back later at a profit.

Oh, that does look nice. Thanks! Yes! Now I can use the decent D-pad on my Logitech wireless pad.

All my opinion:
1. No.
2. It's got MGS2 controls.
3. I think so.

Christ, I can't wait for the day when people stop pretending Metal Arms was any good. We get it. Nobody bought the game, and it's not terrible.

Low standard.

it wasn't crap. far from it. it was quite fun imo.
it was however, very rough around the edges.
swingin' ape studios had a potential franchise here. too bad it didn't do too great.

on a different note, all you internet msg board gamers singing praise about the gcn and its library...did you buy and play it during the years it was competing on the market? or is this one of those 'i like it because it's retro' thing?

this is something i've noticed aswell with any threads relating to the dreamcast. were you gamers actually playing these systems when they were on the market? you know, when these consoles could have used all the adoration and praise you show for them today?

because this thread is like frickin' twilight zone compared to the reality of the gcn & dc market during their years...

well, i'm more wondering if that's a frequent occurrence or just a handful of times.

I'm pretty sure that BIG SPIDER only appears once :)

Yeah, I had a GameCube and no other current consoles through the entire PS2/Xbox/GC generation. I had friends with PS2s and Xboxes and the like, but yeah, my nostalgia of the GameCube is very much rooted in my experience at the time, rather than liking it 'because it's retro'.

I'm fully aware that it was a bust on the market at the time, I specifically remember the NINTENDO IS DOOMED death knell sounding every time a retailer stopped stocking GameCube stuff, or when a multiplatform game skipped the GC. I think the fact that the console specifically *didn't* have every single multiplatform game helps in my appreciation to be honest. It helped the console carve it's own niche of titles rather than having one or 2 exclusive franchises and the rest of the library being pretty much the same across every platform.

Is Gamecube even considered retro yet? Lol.

It was the only console I owned that gen, and the only one I wanted to own. Loved it from day one. I have acquired many more games in later times, but that was more to do with my disposable income than anything else.

i bought both the DC & GC at launch; DC was an incredible price & had some fantastic launch titles (shameful that i spent the first week on FF VIII which launched on the same day), everyone i knew a the time owned one. by my own anecdotal evidence, i thought it was sega's biggest success yet, heh.

also got a GC at launch, didn't know many others with it but after Smash Bros & a few others id see them more often. i sung its praises to the high heavens, but the kiddie lunchbox stigma kinda stuck, and PS2 domination/ports of stuff like RE4 meant that it largely fell on deaf ears.

i was in college during the release of both, and bought as many games as i could for them. good times.

Even if it were more people just discovering what they missed out on, I can't see anything bad about that. I like the thought of more people experiencing what I enjoyed back then.

Well I'd like to both thank and curse Irish for pointing out this thread to me. After years of saying I'm going to restart my GameCube collection now I"m finally doing it. My wife will be thrilled... lol

So far I only have a black GC and some games like WW, ED, Skies and the zelda collection but I'm going to hit up some local GS's in case they have anything. First step is also trying to track down a Component cable but thankfully a friend in AUS is trying to help with that.

Can those Hori game pads still be found places?

Not sure, but I think eBay/BuySellTrade thread is your best bet.

I got mine in the BST thread, actually. Someone had one, and I happened to PM him first. Sent him a copy of Mirror's Edge, got the pad in return. Probably the deal of my life.

anything to help, gun <3

also anyone wanna help me properly celebrate THE YEAR OF LUIGI by donating this bad boy

fj98BQ9.jpg

please feel free to do so before checking ebay, thanks!

My main uses for my black cube were slim but I still have it up in my loft in a box, I should dig it out for the GBA player again.

I bought the black cube and prime system bundle, Metroid is dope.
Wind Waker was rather cool but ended up playing OOT on the extras disc more then Wind Waker itself.
F-Zero GX Kreygasm
Bought the GBA player, that and prime probably had the most use on the system to me.
Since I had PSO on my xbox I had Ep3 on cube, it was my first serious try to get into a card game outside of light fun with pokemon cards with my friends, game was great but so slow I never beat it completely.

I owned other games and had friends lend me sunshine and stuff, but the cube to me was a metroid and gba player machine.

i remember those days too, lol. it was a new 'doomed' every day.

definitely.
i didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with it. i just find it it interesting. i have personal issues with the concept of 'hindsight', i think, lol.

I had a look at the Hori pads on eBay a year or so back out of interest. Saw the going rate and gave up on ever having one, god damn.

On another note, this little beauty arrived today.

Got it for AU$55, which I felt a kinda decent price given I was looking at $99 minimum last time I looked, and the general going rate these days seemed to be around $70-ish.

That menu music is NICE!

i have personal issues with the concept of 'hindsight', i think, lol.

Heh, I know what you mean. A lot of people (myself included at times :P) find it hard to take off the rose-tinted glasses at times and admit that even though a game is old, it really isn't as good as you might remember it being.

Just subbed this thread as I’ve recently started picking up and re-buying some of my old Gamecube games. For some reason, I thought that I owned a set of component cables for my ‘Cube but was sad to see that it was actually an S-Video hookup (lol).

No biggie though, I was able to hook up my Wii and be playing in no time. Really enjoying my recent purchases of Viewtiful Joe 2, Rogue Leader, Rebel Strike, Wave Race, Super Monkey Ball 2 and F-Zero. Great additions to my GC collection!

I was surprised to read in the OP that Gamecube with component cables has a very slight image advantage over the Wii’s emulation. But at 100-200 dollars? F*** that! No offense but if those Windwaker captures are an indication of the “difference” in clarity, I’m more than happy with my Wii.
