The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Just subbed this thread as I’ve recently started picking up and re-buying some of my old Gamecube games. For some reason, I thought that I owned a set of component cables for my ‘Cube but was sad to see that it was actually an S-Video hookup (lol).

No biggie though, I was able to hook up my Wii and be playing in no time. Really enjoying my recent purchases of Viewtiful Joe 2, Rogue Leader, Rebel Strike, Wave Race, Super Monkey Ball 2 and F-Zero. Great additions to my GC collection!

I was surprised to read in the OP that Gamecube with component cables has a very slight image advantage over the Wii’s emulation. But at 100-200 dollars? F*** that! No offense but if those Windwaker captures are an indication of the “difference” in clarity, I’m more than happy with my Wii.

For sure, I wouldn't pay $200 for that difference. I did however pay $46 for that difference, and I'm happy to pay that :D

If you're in AU/NZ, Nintendo Australia seems to still have some left.

Also, Rogue LEader and Rebel Strike are games I really need in my collection. Rogue Leader in particular was just incredible graphically. I couldn't fathom a game looking so good at the time.

Yeah - at below $50 I would probably bite. Sadly, I'm in Canada and I'm not seeing it for below $100.

I was surprised at how great Rogue Leader still looks. The lighting is still quite impressive! I still have to dig further into Rebel Strike but it's also very pretty. As far as Star Wars games go, both of these are well worth owning.

I'd say only grab some if you can find em cheap or mispriced somewhere. Thrift stores (check the systems, you never know), pawn, etc.

And an oddity from my collection that i found at a garage sale last year

It's a LodgeNet GameCube controller.
it's sorta a PPV / game rental thing you would find hooked up to TV's in hotel rooms.
unfortunately at the end of the long long cord is a phone jack plug, so there's no way to use it with an actual GameCube. =/
Maybe it will work with Gamecube Dev kits?

Either way, wonder if you sacrifice a cheap-o GCN controller extension cord by cutting one end off and replacing it with a female RJ15 phone jack. From what I remember with wiring toodles' cthulhu PCB, I think the GCN controller only needs 3 wires for the controllers. Plug the Logdgnet into your hacked extension cord and you might have an interesting 3rd party controller lol.

Sexy TDEV get :)

Finally got my hands on a gb player by a mistake. Goodwill had a black GameCube w/ Wavebird included for 15 bucks. (honestly I bought it just for the Wavebird) It wasn't until I got home and flipped over the GameCube to check which covers were missing for me tO notice the gb player. Luckily I have the boot up disk already to complete it.

My most recent black Gamecube has been sitting around for a while, and the only game I own so far is Animal Crossing. I did also get my hands of a GBA as well, so sooner or later, I'll try and track down a link cable (and a GB player, eventually), as well as expand my library some more. There's been plenty of stuff I missed out on, like Wind Waker, Pokemon XD and Eternal Darkness, among others. Love to hear some recommendations, as well!

is the gbplayer region-free? I know there is no region lock in the gameboy itself, but what about the gbplayer? Any gbplayer will play in any gamecube? Even the software disc?

okay, so that's RE: 0, Super Monkey Ball (thanks gun!), Skies, and Starfox down. Billy Hatcher & PSO are the last ones on my list until you people point out more gems i missed...speaking of, tonight is Chibi Robo night!

I posted my Hori controller in the B/S/T thread if anyone's interested.
EDIT: SOLD.

haha if it helps, the winner posted on the last page~

Here's my little collection (all UK PAL)

Not pictured:

Warioware Inc.: Mega Party Games
Waverace: Blue Storm
(Both in the bedroom, and I'm not risking waking the missus for the sake of a photo)

4x Bongo's
Grey Wavebird
Platinum Wavebird
Mario Dance Mat
2x GBA cables
2x Memory Card 1019
Pearl White Gamecube with GBA Player and official Broadband Adapter.

Think that's everything. Sorry about the bad quality pic, but I was lucky to get that to be honest. This rooms crap for taking photos.

^nice collection!

every few years i ask & forget, so: RE2 & 3 on GC, were there any extras/graphic upgrades? i wanna say playing 3 on DC (via bleemcast?) was better than PSX, not sure what to expect of these.

Thanks.

Apart from being a bit cleaner/sharper, I can't remember any extras or upgrades. Been a while since I've busted them out though.

I'm almost 100% sure that the GameCube versions of RE2 and 3 were straight up ports of the PS1 games. No improvements to gameplay, graphics or anything.

Just picked up a Purple GameCube off of Craigslist for 20 bucks!

I haven't had a Cube since the Wii came out when I traded it in (stupidly...wiht my GameBoy Player and Hori pad)...grrr....

I never had a purple one before, only a black and a platinum.

Feels good.

I have a platinum Gamecube that my parents bought for me in I want to say 2004. I had a launch indigo Gamecube but it broke. I don't really like the way the platinum looks though and as silly as it might seem I've been searching for an indigo one locally. No such luck yet.

I love the Gamecube though. While I'm still missing some essential titles it is one of my favourite consoles ever. Love it.

I figured this would be a great thread, I'm at the tail end (I think) collecting Gamecube titles (among many other systems) and I figured I should see if there is anything noteworthy missing? Keep in mind I also have extensive PS2 and Xbox collections so something of note might be on those too.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0Aq38TbJphxAodEVCai1telM1Vng2OGQyc2RPRFc4QVE&gid=6

Black means I have it, red means i'm in the process of finding them, should I be considering anything else?

Dude, I thought you were a Mega Man fan, where the hell is X collection? ;)

The prices are already going over 50$ on this one already. D:

Might be otherwise but didn't they actually add a few new folders or bits of information you could find in the game? Fairly sure I read that once long ago.

After a little research, there are apparently some minor differences. For RE2 there are:

  • can skip cut-scenes
  • apparently the RESIDENT EVILLL guy is different
  • minor graphical improvement (removing the weird angled joints that were common to PS1) Still lower resolution than the Dreamcast version though
  • None of the extras from the N64 versions

In other news, I picked these up today, $10 each from a guy who sold me a bunch of PSX games.

Rogue Leader is just essential in a GC collection IMO. It was one the launch games that defined the GameCube for me. Also I remember having a blast with Dark Alliance when I rented it, so should be decent to go through again.

I need Rogue Leader. Hard to find.

I sold mine when I got Rebel Strike. Idiot.

Is it? I got a copy a couple of days ago when I went hunting at some local gamestops and it seems cheap on ebay.

Also Does anyone know a good way to get replacement boxes? I got a bunch of games that came as disc only, it was suggested that regular dvd cases can work but I'd like ones set up to hold the smaller discs.

Not sure if they still carry them but some years ago I bought some from bresoftware from ebay, but they have a dedicated site as well.

Huh... Yeah RE2 & 3 don't show up on 480p supported GC game lists. So if the DC versions support the VGA box...

Anyone tried the $5 GC controllers they sell at the store Five Below? I would assume they'd be crap, but they look almost exactly like official Nintendo controllers.

It might not be helpful but, some time ago I was doing research on what the definitive console versions were for the entire RE series for collecting purposes, I ended up with RE directors cut (PSX), RE2/3/CV (DC) and also CV on ps2. All of the cube versions too of course, but I do recall reading that the DC versions were all the best versions on a console.

Yeah, I just asked in the DC collector thread if anyone can confirm it. However, I do have Code Veronica, which is another game not on any 480p support list for the GC, and it does support VGA out on the DC. That would mean that it runs in 480p on the DC.

Genesis Dreamcast does what Nintendon't! lol

Edit: Oops! I said that in the Nintendo Gamecube thread. Burn me!

In my hunt for a component cable I'm wondering something, is there any problem using one from Japan? or do I have to hunt down a US cable?

All righty, I picked up the Intec Gamecube Monitor used and just got it in the mail.

fwKquwq.jpg

I admit, I'm not really used to 480i, so I can't give a proper comparison to TVs as I don't have one. Monitors usually have higher quality, clearer images than TVs which was the reason I picked it up. It had some scratches on the screen but I can't even see them when the light turns on so it doesn't matter. I went with Intec cause Interact apparently has lamer quality.

Anyhow, I think I notice a very tad bit of yellow but I only noticed it on Smash Bros. Melee. I'm not sure if it's just this monitor, but it wasn't like the 3DS yellowing, it might be the cables. I popped in PSO and it looked a lot better than Melee with this monitor. Actually it's not so much yellowing, I guess you could say it's "greening" so I properly need to use AV input for image quality.

The monitor has a brightness slighter that makes the screen well, brighter. You can also adjust the color and and volume. I will say that the speakers are LOOOOOUD, like holy Rappy on a Booma sandwich they are loud (which is good). There's also a headphone jack which is pretty cool.

There is an AV input, like it looks like a headphone jack but you could setup the normal gamecube cables here. This also means you can use the monitor for every system that has composite cables (red yellow and white).

The screen I guess you could say is good for 480i, I am curious to know if there are any ways I can get SVideo or 480p out of this monitor. Is there any AV cable to Component or SVideo out there?

Once again have a Gamecube. Black (mandatory, had to match my GB Player!), digital video out that I'll probably never use, just like my old launch unit. Should get my s-video cable tomorrow.

I used to have one of those. Probably gone since I haven't seen it in years. Converting the signal won't really help your image quality since you're going to be limited by composite anyway, I think. Adapters do exist though, and s-video/composite ones look really cheap. Not sure if those will work since the screen will need to be able to accept the luma/chroma input?

I remember years ago there was a prototype for a portable screen for the GameCube that used the component out instead of the composite. Here it is:

Oh how I wish it was released!

Wasn't that the "supposed" 3D glasses free screen?

Damn those PSO figures!

where do I ask for a "Only For" corner in my avatar? I thought this was the right place but I am not sure anymore :/ Can someone point me to the right place?

Aww man, that would have been awesome. I always love seeing stuff like this!

For 5 bucks, they're actually a really good imitation

they definitely feel cheaper and stiffer than the official ones, but 5 dollars for a brand new controller is a great deal

My Gamecube collection is probably the only console library I have where I own every game that I want for the system. The only game I can think of to add to my collection is Rogue Squadron III.
