The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

So, given that I care about 480p I guess the Wii Versions of REmake and RE:Zero would be my best bet for those games

Do they really do 480p on the Wii? I know it's a system setting, but there are Wii games that don't do 480p anyway. I sort of assumed that non-480p Gamecube ports would be among that group.

So my Gamecube arrived a few days ago as well as the games I bought.

Black and Purple controllers are pretty much perfect condition.
The stick on the wavebird is busted. Wiggles around like crazy and gets pushed in. Was not in the ebay description so am not happy. How easy are they to replace? And how do I get my hands on genuine parts? Take them out of another controller? :\

Anyway, as for the games.

I own:

Super Smash Bros. Melee
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (with OoT Master Quest)
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble

Will buy soon:

Super Mario Sunshine
Luigi's Mansion
Mario Kart: Double Dash
F-Zero GX
Metroid Prime (have played on Wii)
Metroid Prime 2 (have played on Wii)
Pikmin (have played on Wii)
Pikmin 2 (have played on Wii)

Will buy eventually/when I see for cheap:

Pokemon Colosseum
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
Starfox Adventures
Starfox Assault
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Animal Crossing
Baten Kaitos
Kirby: Air Ride
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (+ bongos)
Wave Race: Blue Storm
Chibi-Robo
Doshin the Giant
Skies of Arcadia: Legends
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Viewtiful Joe 2

Anything major I've missed? Obviously Resident Evil 4, REmake and Eternal Darkness, but I can't do horror D:

Donkey Konga Series (+foreign versions included)
Mario Party Series

Oooh thanks for the list, very helpful.

Few more games I just remembered, Super Monkey Ball (1 & 2) and Billy Hatcher (edit: and 1080 Avalanche), how are they?

Benz, every console has a different center. Fix it for the GC and it's off for the Genesis. Fix it for Genesis and it's off for NES or PS. It sucks. That's why most UIs don't put anything past a certain point around the edges of your screen.

You can go into your TV service menu and lower the horizontal and vertical values until it fits.

Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 are both great. 2 Supports progressive scan and widescreen so I'd recommend it over the first if you intend to play it on a newer flat panel TV. I like SMB1 better overall though.

So a buddy at work is bringing me his massive Gamecube collection next week. He's clearing out space, and knows I'll give it a good home.

I had the sudden realization tonight that, "Oh, hey, I think I might still have a few games left for that thing on my shelf. I wonder if I have anything worthwhile or valuable?"

Huh.

A booth at my local Flea Market is going out of business and I was able to grab the following this past weekend complete for $50:

Smash Bros. Melee
LoZ: Twilight Princess
Star Fox Adventures
Star Fox Assault
P.N. 03
Viewtiful Joe

I already had Smash and Twilight Princess but knew someone who needed them and my Twilight Princess sorta needed a quality upgrade anyway. I'm going to go back in Saturday and hopefully he's there at least one more weekend.

Feel like my GC collection is finally starting to be respectable at least. How is P.N 03 anyway?

In honor of Pac-Man joining Super Smash Bros. I bought a Player's Choice two-disc copy of "Pac-Man Vs. + Pac-Man World 2" GameCube for $5 at an Action Pawn.

Got an awesome haul of Gamecube games today for $5 each:

-Soul Calibur 2
-PN 03
-Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door
-Star Fox Adventures
-Baten Kaitos
-Baten Kaitos Origins
-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
-Time Splitters: Future Perfect
-Wario World
-Mario Kart: Double Dash
-Luigi's Mansion
-Tales of Symphonia

Really psyched to play some games that I was never able to a decade ago.

Very Nice score! I can usually find some amazing deals on PS2 and Xbox games in-person but honestly the Gamecube deals are much, much fewer and further in-between.

Have you ever played P.N. 03? I picked it up for a good deal recently and I'm curious if anyone has impressions on it.

Latest pick-up, got it because there was a thread on this a little while back:

EDIT: back cover contains the infamous word 'unprecedented', hah. That partnership ;)

I haven't played it before. I've always been curious since I've known about the whole Capcom Five thing, but never bothered to buy it when reviews weren't so great.

PN 03 is a stylish action game that plays very differently from what you'd expect.

How much you like it depends on whether or not you want to learn to play it right or sit there whining about how it doesn't play.

So now that I've realized I have this fancy Plus version of Phantasy Star I&II, is this a worthwhile game to have around? I know none of the servers have existed for years; is the game still fun as a 1UP or local Multi?

Play it online! Not sure how popular the servers are these days but it's doable.

Also, PSO Plus is pretty rare, consider yourself lucky. Fun game, too, I sunk hundreds of hours in to both single and multiplayer.

I really like PN03, it was pretty much a prototype for Vanquish. I loved the soundtrack, too.

Also Donkey Konga 3 is the last game I need for my Gamecube collection, I have literally everything else I want. It's coming back in stock at play-asia but it's 90 freaking dollars. That breaks my heart and I'm waffling on it.

Is there any reason you're avoiding Ebay? It goes for like $25 or less there.

I went a bit mental this week.

The Gamecube is a bit scuffed up but it'll be good as a spare just in case my other one dies. I also got 3 Gamecube memory cards (1 official, 1 unoficial and a mad catz one) and a Action Replay so I can play the imported versions of the games.

Here's my complete collection now.

Some of these I've been dying to replay through.

Is there any reason to buy the GCN port of Crazy Taxi if I have the Dreamcast one? I'm genuinely curious since I like the game a lot.

Nope, there's a chip at the base of the connector that does the 'analog-to-digital signal' job.

If it was just a simple cable, we probably would have seen tons of third parties replicating it already. This was probably too complicated to replicate to a point where it just wasn't worth it.

I can't speak exactly what company or who was looking at doing this at one point, but there was at least one. In the end, it seemed to niche and therefore not worth it.

What's wrong with the GC version? Is it at least playable? I'd like to have a physical copy of the game in my collection, but I don't have a Dreamcast/PS2 hooked up.

Both the GCN and PS2 version have a fair number of graphical issues. The GCN version had all the voices re-recorded, I believe to remove references to the licensed real-world stores, but I'm not entirely sure if that was why. Otherwise it should play well, so go for it if you don't have a Dreamcast.

Yeah, i've seen gamecube component cables not from Nintendo, sadly they're just outputting the S-video signal through component, so they don't do anything exciting. There's no other component cables that actually work properly outside of the Nintendo ones.

Apparently the spec of the digital output on the back actually includes audio... but no cable Nintendo ever made dealt with it. I guess having a chip in the cable to do the Digital-to-Analogue video was expensive enough.

Pick ups from today:
Complete Indigo Cube with a memory card, cords, and three controllers for $10 at a garage sale. I also got RE4 and RE1 for $8 each.

Looking forward to playing RE4 for the first time.

it's playable, the DC ports Acclaim did like crazy taxi and 18 wheeler are just quick ports and got slammed in reviews for not looking better on better hardware.
