The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

chibo robo realistic prices?

the same goes for that cubivore game or something?

iam interested but i only see wasted copies of them on ebay... some minded person interested to hand them out for reasonable prices to a collector in PAL-Land?

Just bought an NTSC GameCube + F-Zero GX....then looked at how expensive component cables are, and decided that a US Wii would be a better bet for guaranteed 60hz & sometimes 480p gaming. I'd have lived without the latter if it supported RGB, but nope. I really forward to playing Luigi's Mansion again, this time in English. I played through on my import GC soon after the Japanese launch but never bothered with the PAL version for obvious reasons. Other than that, I've got Wave Race, Super Monkey Ball (had those two + LM at the JP launch) and Mario Sunshine - which I never finished - on the way. Chibi Robo and Paper Mario 2 (another game I started but didn't complete) will probably come next.

A bit off topic, but as I'm going for a US Wii, is Excitebots worth playing? That never made it across the pond. Full-gore No More Heroes is also on my list. :)

Selling all my SNES and NES games on ebay and buying Gamecube stuff now. I sold my Heinenken Gamecube a few months ago and really really regret it. I bought Fzero GX for $18 today.

There was a Mario Kart: Double Dash tournament today at the local retro game themed restaurant here. I didn't get very far but it was fun while it lasted!

I'm forcing 480p on REmake right now. I'm noticing all sorts of detail. What I wouldn't give for a buffed out PC that can run Dolphin with ease...

480p cube will do fine for now.

REmake was one of the first reasons why I upgraded my PC back then, this and for Dolphin in general.

Worth it. REmake stood the test of time so well.

It's not great on the PC. While those shots above aren't too bad the game generally looks poor through Dolphin as a result of the pre-rendered backgrounds. Mixing higher resolution models against low resolution backgrounds doesn't work great.

It looks best playing on a real CRT.

Hopefully one day we'll get a resolution pack that could make these backgrounds a bit less blurry.

I'm really interested into working on the characters textures, but I never did anything like that ever before though. It could be a really awesome project.

TBH I noticed that the backgrounds are really low res. Even in 480p it tands out.

Also, RE froze on my old swiss file so I'm now playing with the latest nightly build. There are some interesting changes... 240p mode and anisotropy filtering? Hmm...

Just watched some Game Sack about fighting games. Soul Calibur 2 came up. I thought the Xbox version in 720p was probably the best version, but the Gamecube version was 16:9 and the Xbox wasn't? I think I'm changing my mind (also obviously Link.)

Xbox, Ps2, and GameCube versions all support 16:9 anamorphic widescreen in 480p. Xbox version exclusively supports 720p, but that mode is forced 4:3

Well... I'd personally rather play 16:9 at 480p than 4:3 at 720p (I dislike black bars and hate screen stretching). Given that there are unlikely to be many graphical differences when they're both at 480p, I'd still probably choose the one with Link in it.

Hi guys. Currently amassing a wii game collection via my wii u and tempted to start on a gc collection too.

As a uk gamer what would the best course of action be: usa gc / uk gc / uk wii?

I know gc component cables are a tad expensive but there does look to be a difference in quality betwee gc and wii component output.

Also in terms of pal slowdown on gc titles, would it be recommended to go the ntsc route for the console and games?

GC vs Wii Component is fairly neglible. I'd say there's like a less than 5% improvement by using GC component cables. There's a lot of mis-information spreading on the subject.

Unless you want 480p gameboy player and the best quality when playing LAN compatitable games, the BC Wii is honestly the better choice.

Regarding PAL vs NTSC, go with NTSC. PAL games don't run in 480p at all, whereas most NTSC ones do.

Edit: After scouring the thread, I found legitimate comparisons for 480p through component on both consoles. GC top, Wii Bottom.

Cheers for the advice, might just get a Wii and softmod it for region free capabilities (will help me check out some of the USA only Wii titles I have my eye on, like Arc Rise Fantasia)

In my opinion, Link in the Soul Calibur universe makes much more sense, because of the sword and shield.
For me, it's easily the best version and have got all of them.

re: Gamecube 480p and component..
I wanted 480p but I didn't want to spend the money.
Managed to grab the Japanese D-Terminal cable for quite cheap - as it seems a lot of people don't realise that these are 480p cables, and then a D-Terminal to component adapter.
Works like a charm.

I honestly don't see much of a difference at all.O_o

If you open up tabs with them and look at the face of the boat, beedle's boat and the houses in the background, you can see the colour is better on the gamecube one, particularly around the face of the king of red lions. The difference is fairly small though.

Yeah, not £100 worth of difference for me, but i'm not an audio/visual-phile like some so i'm not one to pass judgement :)

I've recently acquired an interest in making a Gamecube collection...

This is currently what I own. Sadly some of the game boxes are not in the greatest condition (or are gross yellow gamer's choice) but this is my starting point. What are some games I should try and get?

Yeh looking at it, the colours pop more on Gamecube. There's also a slight edge in the sharpness of the Gamecube shot.

Honestly though Wii component is fine. I'd only go for Gamecube component if you will be using the Gameboy Player a lot.

I've got a D-Terminal cable en route to check things out for myself. I'm very curious as to how well the XRGB will deal with it.

Neat, I'd be interested to hear your impressions!

I've always kinda wanted a D-Terminal cable, just because. Nintendo Australia didn't have them when I called though.

Hopefully mine will work; I got it off of Yahoo Auctions Japan for 5,000 Y. It's missing the housing on the D-Terminal side, so if that is damaged in any way I'll re-terminate it.

One thing is for sure; I'm a picky little bitch and if it isn't better than the Wii in component, the world will hear about it and the $60 (with shipping) I wasted.

I doubt those were ever made available outside Japan/east Asia. Not sure any other countries ever picked up the standard.

I just bought a used Gamecube on Amazon with all the cables, a mem card, and a controller. I STILL have the REmake and the bonus collection disk with Zelda: OOT, MM, Zelda 1 and Zelda 2. I played a lot of the games people have mentioned (in the first few pages anyway) but I especially loved Eternal Darkness. The Gamecube was my first console of that generation, mainly for Wind Waker (not my favorite Zelda game). Any gems I may have missed along the way for recommendation?

Still on the hunt for some decently priced component cables. No clue why, but they seem to have spiked on Amazon and eBay lately (even higher than the normally high price). I can't pay anything insane, but I would offer a fair price if anyone is looking to get rid of theirs.

I'd like some suggestions for any games I'm missing. Basically I'm interested in any game that is either console-exclusive to the 'cube or has the best version on the 'cube. I'll also take any game that just has some 'cube exclusive features. Games that have better versions on the Xbox or Wii (amongst others) don't interest me too much. If there's a better digital-only version though? I prefer physical.

Is the GC version of Rayman 3 somehow better than or has exclusive content when compared to the Xbox version?

There's some linkability between the GameCube and GameBoy Advance versions, but I can't remember what that does, since I haven't done it in years.

It's actually the best use I've seen outside of a full-fledged game like 4 Swords. The GBA player plays a sort of Tetris-ish game to place pieces in 2D, and that creates a surface for the Gamecube player to run on. The Gamecube player is being chased by something, I forget what, or maybe it's just a timer. My friend and I had a good bit of fun with it.

Haha! I found one old save file of mine that has Chris carrying the Rocket launcher. I wonder if Jill will have special weapons or if thats a separate file?

I second this, it's a short 2 player mini-game, but it's incredibly fun. I've booted up Rayman 3 on occasion just to play it.

Does anyone know a site where i can get hi res covers for old GC games? I have used the cover project for years but I have 3 games with the dreadful gamestop covers that they do not have.

Future Tactics uprising
Harry Potter & the sorcerers stone
Robotech Battlecry

Any help is appreciated!
