Dang, might have to try finding one of those SD card media launchers, would be amazing to try forcing my dumb PAL games into 480p, then doing another comparison with 576i, 480i and ...

You can order them from that link. For 30 bucks that thing allows you to do so much more. Backup your games/boot them off an SD CARD, and run pretty much any homebrew apps for the cube. And swiss alone has a lot of options other than forcing 480p. You can also force wide screen, force 240p, anisotropy filtering, boot isos, etc...

Holy cow you can force 240p??? I need to get me one of these!

Edit: They won't ship here, damn.

Edit 2: Their loss I guess, just got Swiss working without it.

I was about to ask which games would benefit from a forced 240p, but then I thought about it and want to play Sonic 3 in 240p immediately.

Well that was quick! How'd you manage? Is your cube already modded?

Yeh years ago I bought a Xeno chip and a generic memory card SD adapter. Finally installed the Xeno last year because I was sick of using the Freeloader but had never got around to setting up the SD card thingy. Got another one on the way now though so I can use Slot B too. This is exciting!

I'll try take some shots later today but I don't have a lot of 2D games on hand.

force 240p

*Sigh*

OKAAAY I'll buy one. :P

EDIT: Not messin' around this time.

Forcing 240p is definitely awesome, but what more do they do?

Anyways, what happened to the price of Star Fox Assault, I thought everybody despised that game.

I just went over that on this page:

Aha. Now I know where you live. To be sure you ain't messing around, I'm coming over. You stay where you are, Seik Mofo.

What Gamecube game renders at 240p?O_o

I'll force 480p every time if there's a choice for it(assuming it turns out right).

Hardly any, naturally, but lots suit it due to being retro compilations etc.

In my case I'm running my GC on a PVM via RGB SCART so 480p isn't possible. I'll take stable 240p over flickery 480i any day.

Technically none I suppose, but Sonic Mega Collection and Namco Museum are games that were originally 240p and really ought to be played that way.

Mega Man X Collection definitely renders at 240p. I remember trying it out through component cables once and there was no visual but there was still audio.

Just got back into Gamecube collecting. Picked up a few games because they were so cheap.I have Mario golf coming next week. I had a gamecube a few months back but didn't really do much with it. That's a decision I really regretted.

I never had a gamecube on launch or during its years. Strange considering I had a console on launch going back to the 2600(i'm 40) I got Rogue Leader today and never played it before. I think it still holds up today.

Haha! :D

By the way, do you know if that thing have a capacity limit concerning SD cards? I'd probably use a 64gb and slam all my ripped library in it, well, a big part of it.

You said that it could force 16:9 in some games back then, right? Did you try it with Twilight Princess? I'm wondering if it has the same kind of stretching bugs than with Dolphin.

EDIT: I'll avoid double posting: Got this gem today.

REALLY better than what I remember, yet I remember it being one of the best Naruto fighters out there. Only memories I had was during highschool, playing with a couple of buddies at a friend's who got both this game and a free loader.

Holds up pretty well on Dolphin, too, no regrets.

I don't think there is a memory limit. Heck the creator of swiss has this crazy interface for an HDD. I was going to use a 64 GB card but I couldn't get one at a price I wanted last Xmas. I have a class 10 32 GB SDHC card for ISOs and it works fine. I keep Swiss on a dinky half gig card though and just swap it on the media select screen as swiss is loaded onto the local memory inside the cube at that point.

Twilight Princess had crazy issues near water in 16:9. Water effects in the extra space on the sides of the screen went nuts. I didn't notice stretching though. However, that was on a now very outdated version of Swiss. The latest nightly builds have made tremendous leaps since then. I should try out TP and see how it works now...

That's exactly the same problem as when the game is streched via Dolphin, too. So I guess there's not much to do in that case.

That 576p discussion intrigued me if it was doable on NTSC games to get a better IQ, seems like it doesn't work sadly.

Wiki: Forcing 576p on NTSC games will in many cases not offer any resolution improvements, and could even result in a squished, letterboxed image, depending on the TV used. NTSC titles are generally hardcoded to a 480 line resolution, and will simply output a 480 line picture in the middle of a 576 line frame. Some TVs will crop off the empty lines, resulting in essentially the same picture as in 480p, but running at a lower 50Hz. Other TVs will display the empty lines, leaving a squished image in the middle of the screen. Unless the game actually renders to the full 576 lines, using 480p will offer a better display.

That said, I can't wait to try stuff with this thing, sounds like there's a lot of options! I'll be taking the latest rev. there, that's where you go too I guess, Televator?

I remember playing a bunch of the Naruto GNT imports with my friends back in the day. Nice!

That's exactly why I got it. :P

I heard Twilight Princess widescreen on swiss is supposed to be fixed nowadays? Saw a thread on the Dolphin forums on it asking if they could implement their method, I have no idea if that ever happened.

edit:

Oh
my
god...

I totally forgot that this game existed, and I wanted to play it so bad back in the day, I need to get on that someday...
Yeah, I kinda forgot about it until Codename STEAM came out at E3 this year and the gameplay description reminded me of Future Tactics.

Looks interesting. Any reason to get this version over the Xbox one though?

Not familiar with the Xbox version but considering it's Renderware engine middleware, I assume it should be fine.

I was just looking through my old Gamecube games. I own but have never played more than 30 minutes of Gladius, Freedom Fighters and Beyond Good ad Evil. How do you guys think these games age? Should I fire any of them up?

Hey everyone. I'm considering importing a Japanese GameCube and was wondering if anyone could answer a question I have... Would a US AC Adapter work with a Japanese GameCube? Or would it fry the system?

edit:

What? It works now?

I need to try it ASAP.

I'm trying it now (even though my PVM is 4:3 it has a 16:9 button). It works fine. The only anomaly is that the two blocks on the edges (read: the actual missing widescreen parts) load before anything else, so you get this kind of block effect on the sides when things load. No biggie I guess.

I don't know if it does because I have no way to test it so please do! I'd love to find out myself.

I'm guessing you mean you have no way to do it on your actual cube with your retail copy of TP, but couldn't you just load it in Dolphin via Swiss?

Ah I was mostly referring to actual cube use there. I haven't picked up one of those SD launchers yet because I don't own a component cable to make use of forced progressive scan anyway. :(

I don't have a PC capable of running Dolphin properly either but I guess I still could have tested it anyway yeah. Sounds like way more hassle than it's worth it though, what with other people in this thread who no doubt do have the capability to test these things properly.

Ahh gotcha! I thought there was a possibility you were planning to use Dolphin but didn't know you could load widescreen TP via Swiss within the emulator!

I really should grab another cube for LCD use and hook it up with component cables. I'm too in love with CRTs though. Can't wait til I find a monitor that can do 480p, then it's gonna be ON!

This game was really fun back in the day. Choose winged sasuke mirror match and do the super with the giant fire ball with both characters at the same time. Enjoy what happen.

I loaded up Twilight Princess and I can double up on saying that 16:9 is fixed! Water effects no longer bug out. One tiny quirk where chatacters and unimportant objects disappear in the area past 4:3.

Other than that I can enjoy TP on the cube in 480p widescreen finally. I'm gnna try forcing the anisotropy option and see how much that improves graphics.

I had Freedom Fighters on the xbox. It's a good strategic third person shooter. I remember the enemies being far smarter than I first expected. At the same time the game is quite fair and beatable with some effort.

The story is pretty cool with an alternate universe Soviet Union invading and occupying a down on its luck USA.

That's great news, guess I'll do TP once again soon, too!

Wait, you can add anisotropy filtering, too? I wonder how much it can improve the IQ, that is if it doesn't fuck up graphics for some reason, for starters. :P

All ready to start on Paper Mario and it turns out my gamecube controller is broke, analogue stick doesnt work properly. Time to invest in a wavebird!

Lack of Skies of Arcadia Legends ruined the combo.
Wave Race on GC is good though!

Which version do people prefer of Skies of Arcadia? Legends or the original?

I've heard mixed things. Evidently the Gamecube version has sub-par audio compared to the Dreamcast one. But, at the same time, the Gamecube version added a bunch of cool other stuff.

I also heard the encounter rate was decreased, which I guess is a good thing for a game of this type - as long as its still decently balanced of course.
