The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Finally jumping on the Gamecube wagon that I missed out on all these years (besides playing Smash and Mario Kart at friends houses) via Dolphin.

What are some of the must play single player games?

I'm starting with REmake right now and it's fucking amazing, I will probably play through RE4 again even though I had the PS2 version, and I've heard good things about Eternal Darkness.

Oh shit, I just realized I can finally play the Metroid Prime games...

You've got a pretty good list right there in fact. Eternal Darkness is a goddamn masterpiece, as is REmake.

Metroid Prime 1&2 are both incredible, as is The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

Highly recommend Killer7 as well, not to everyone's taste but I love it.

Yeah, Killer7 always intrigued me and the only Zelda I've ever played is Minish Cap so I would certainly be down for some more Zelda-ing.

Viewtiful Joe and F Zero GX are pretty intense experiences, but not really story heavy.

RPG wise Baten Kaitos Origins is fantastic. I love the original, but the production values of Origins are far higher. This is what pre-Xenoblade Monolith was up to. You can play them in either order tbh.

Frankly I wouldn't touch PAL Symphonia for game play purposes, pretty fonts aside as it is 50Hz and really is 16.66% slower gameplay (I did compare) and being 50Hz can not be 60fps (so you might as well go for the 30 fps PS3 version). However, it was* the only version of Symphonia that can be forced to run 480p (presumably it runs in 60Hz when you do this) if you have the tools to do this.
*-Not checked in years.
.

Woah, I had no idea that there were games in the GC era that still actually ran slower at 50Hz.

A damn good realization! You are in for good times. I'm playingb twilight princess right now... might be one worth your attention too, but the game ain't very cheap.

Since you like REmake, you could also look into Eternal Darkness.

Definitely try out Eternal Darkness, ideally knowing as little as possible going in...and remember, the game will like to try to mess with your head....

Just got a Wavebird, the controller turns on but the receiver doesn't do anything. If I recall correctly, it should light up green. Is it busted? I heard about interference but I'm sure I've used a Wavebird in this place before without issue, though we did just put a new wireless router in lately... Hmm...

IIRC it lights up orange but only when receiving input. Be sure they're on the same frequency. If that's all set then I don't know what the problem could be :/

Gameplaywise, I thought K7 was a pretty lame rail shooter, but the plot and characters were so surprisingly good that it won me over.

I actually tried to return my copy the day after I bought it, it just made a terrible first impression on me. Store wouldn't let me return it for some reason I can't remember now, so I forced myself to push forward and it became one my my favourite games if it's generation.

Try plugging the receiver in and out. You might even have to try a different controller port.

All the ports are working with my other controllers, unless there's something that can specifically make them not work with Wavebirds? Worked first try on the Wii so I'm a bit befuddled hehe.

I do wish wavebirds weren't so expensive, but I don't play enough multiplayer Gamecube to justify a fourth one.

I'm currently trying to figure out where I can put it at the new house, as the new TV is much bigger and takes up the space previously used for the GC.

Try different channels on the controller/receiver. I've ran into interference problems before which were fixed by switching RF channel.

If there's no light at all then you may have accidentally selected mismatching channels.

Yeh I tried 4-5 different channels, but I'll report back after I test them all out.

Walking through to the next room with the same setup (apart from the console) works fine though, hehe.

Good luck!

I'm pretty lazy with channel selecting. I tend to wheel to the next channel on the receiver, then wheel the controller channel around until the receiver lights up. You have to hold down the analogue stick or trigger to make sure it's sending a signal, but it's better to get feedback right away.

No its just a strange ritual I had to do to get a receiver to detect a WB once. I was able to plug it back into the P1 port afterwards. Its not that that your port may not work, its just that WBs can be weird like that.

Haha! Def gonna use that trick!

I have some really old controllers from way back in 2001 when the console launched. Today their control sticks are loose as shit and drift a ton.

Is there anything I can do to fix the looseness/drifting? I keep searching online but turn up nothing. I just hate the idea that all controllers have a finite expiration date, and that two of mine are already unusable :(

Do companies make replacement sticks? I remember seeing people do that in the N64 thread. You'd need an triwing screwdriver to open the controller as well.

I don't know. There's a few scattered links here and there of various third party vendors but nobody seems to have a solid experience with them. They range from "these feel WAY of from 1st party sticks, ew", to "yeah they feel off but w/e".

What do you guys do with your controllers when they go loose? Just throw them away? Someone said this problem was fixed with their later controllers, and if this is the case I presume it's not an issue with their newest white ones?

There's replacement potentiometers on eBay that you can solder in to get them working again. Same part whether it's the analog stick or c stick. I'm actually about to order a bunch myself as they're only a couple of bucks and I have a few controllers that need a stick or two replacing.

Edit: Here they are, cheapest I found anyway.

So the potentiometer used in the GameCube controllers eventually wore down and needs to be replaced, correct?

That doesn't sound too terrible. I'll look into this, thanks!

F-Zero GX is my favorite game on the 'cube (counting Twilight Princess as a Wii-game as I prefer the motion controls), so you need to get on that!

Yeh, something like that. I just ordered like 10 so they only have 7 left now lol. I only need to replace 2 but I figured the rest will do me forever if any other controllers break. Actually none of mine (including launch controllers) have broken but I pick up broken ones for cheap second hand a lot.

If yours are anything like the ones I've got, they feel kinda normal but they don't register much movement if any. One of them I have to push it all the way forward to get it to register but it won't do any other directions, lol.

Gamecube games are so expensive now. I really regret selling Melee now, and that I couldn't buy Fire Emblem as a kid. I see copies of FE for $100, ARGH.

A buddy of mine a few years ago actually offered me his Fire Emblem copy for $10 or something stupid like that. Like, 2007 or something.

I turned it down because I had tried it and really disliked the perma-death. Thought it wasn't worth the $10.

Ugh.

All those PS2-kids finally realizing what they missed out on. Nah, I think the amount of Wii-consoles out there might play a part in this, as so many people now have access to the awesome cube-library. Thankfully, I have most the games I want already :)

They're missing out on the opportunity to own a cable that alone costs more than a Wii console and several good games though.

Honestly, I never invested in that cable myself either :( I do have my 'Cube hooked up though - unlike the Wii which is in the closet.

Sigh... looks like I have to revise my earlier statements regarding Twilight Princess in 16:9 on Swiss.

1. Water effects above water are fixed. Everything looks pefect.

2. Water effects while under water are broken. The game duplicates the respective outter halves of the 4:3 image into the extra 16:9 space. HUD still displays properly.

3. Heat wave effect in the desert is broken. This is a strange one because heat effecf is perfectly fine in the volcanic dungeon. In the desert however I see the same effect as being under water and yet its worse. The picture suffers from what I describe as "double vision". Its hard to describe but its all jacked up. Luckilly, this goes away at night.

I have a Toshiba Crt 28ZD26P 480p via component

Gamecube and Wii (with Component Cable) are awesome.

The only problem is the gamecube and the stretch image in 480p for the game that lacks support for 16:9.

So I searched around and cannot find a decently priced copy of skies of Arcadia, So I'm just gonna stick with my DC copy. What I did find was a new copy of Viewtiful Joe for $25. My friend had this game when we were kids but I never got the chance to play it. I'm really tempted to buy it. :p

Is it actually new or just CIB? Because you can get used CIB copies for like $10.

Oh man you are lucky! I've been trying to find a CRT in my area that does 480P. I've yet to come across one. Gonna keep my eyes peeled for that specific model.

I remember reading the Wii virtual console support 240P. Is there any truth to this? I read it has something to with hold certain buttons down when booting certain titles. I have a 27" Toshiba that seem to support it but not sure the proper way to test that it is on.

So I just got this today.

Will go buy a 32Gb SD card and try it out tomorrow! :D

EDIT: Errr, I think they fucked up, I don't have an SD Media Launcher disc with it, but a Action Replay disc...shit. Anyone can confirm if this is normal because I won't be able to try it until tomorrow.

Weird, it looks all brand new and sealed, would be super unusual to have the wrong disc in a still sealed blister pack like that.

If you get it working, super keep to find out about the fun things you can do with it!

I think it's normal, just did a little research and found this.

A youtuber commented on my channel saying he ordered his SDML and Datel sent him the Action Replay disc with it instead. He wasn't happy but I advised him to contact them through support and see if they could send the correct disc.
This is the reply he received:

Further to your email the latest enclosed Action Replay disc is compatible with all Wii console firmware updates and contains the SD Media Launcher software in addition to the Action Replay software. When loading the enclosed Action Replay disc with the SD Media Launcher hardware and your SD card inserted the SD Media Launcher software will be displayed.

Yours sincerely,

Codejunkies

In any case, I'll find out tomorrow.

EDIT: BTW, It seems sealed, but it's one of those plastic packages that are easy to open and to close as if nothing happened.

I've heard some people claim that they have a disk with both sdml and AR. I guess there might be some truth to that. Looks like you got lucky, seik. They only sent me the disk with SDML... which is kinda shitty if all this true.

I had a modest collection of Gamecube games when the system was on store shelves and expanded that greatly when GameStop started getting rid of the games awhile ago. I'm at 44 games currently, with 19 games I still want left to go. Based on what I can find for average price of complete versions of the games needed it will probably be around another 600 dollars, which means I probably won't complete my collection for some time.

Yeah, if it really have both, indeed that's awesome. :P

It's been a long time since you got yours?

I'll post about it tomorrow.

Yes, when I bought mine when it launched that also happened to me. But if you boot up the disc with the SD Media Launcher adapter it will launch the right SW. Pretty neat to have an Action Replay for free.
