The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Good start! Welcome to the club. It's a great system with some of the best games of all time, and a ton of other nice ones, too - far more than it gets credit for, usually.

I like that you didn't compromise in the face of Nintendo's most illogical, short-sighted decision in their entire history (which is really saying something) - to not sell component cables in stores. Good for you!

Really? That's their most illogical and short sighted decision?

Not really a collector, but the rubber pad on the left analog stick on my controller is destroyed. What's the best option for replacing it? I saw a replacement part on Amazon but it seems to be third party so I'm not sure if that is my best option.

Anyone know anything about those Disney game that were released. Many of them were exclusive to GC. Anything worth while there?

Yeah, but the price is brutal. Can't get over it!

Despite being a huge Disney fan, I only played PK out of those. Decent action platformer, I liked it at the time. Nothing mind-blowing, though, and I was probably willing to overlook a few flaws.

Anyway, interested in opinions on these, as well!

Yoooo my Wavebird is messed up. It has an intermittent connection when I turn it on for like 20 minutes, where analogue movements in specific directions register on/off real quick, but it's fine after that. Tried swapping batteries and frequencies, but all that fixes it is time :\ Anyone else had similar issues?

me, exactly that.

it's been like that since 2004 when I got it, and I've lived in different places and countries and the problem persists,

it's the wavebird.

That's rather odd, if slightly reassuring. Mine is 'right' on both the analogue sticks, and the other directions and inputs are all fine. Can't begin to think what would be causing this.

On a related note, I got my two wired official controllers back after thinking someone had thrown them away! Turns out they were in a box under some Christmas stuff... along with the memory card with all my saves on it.

Everything back in its rightful place... but now I don't have a Wii U GameCube adapter for New Year's Eve Smashing :(

Just finishing off Metroid Prime 1,2,3, then will probably play Paper Mario TTYD for the first time :D

Just got these games for about $50US for the whole package. I'm hyped.

I never got why the "black label" GCN games were worth more, just because they were part of an earlier manufacturing run?

Good catch with Master quest, try it out, I see it to be the Definitive version of OoT, mostly due to it's ramped up difficulty. (I wonder why speedruns of that aren't more popular since it's more challenging?)

And if you dont have it yet, grab Four Swords Adventures, 4 GBA-SP's (backlit versions), 4 GBA-to-GCN link cables, and have at it with 3 other friends, it's like playing a WiiU game with 4 Gamepads, it really was before it's time. Here's a vid of someone setup with 5GCNs (1 per GBA) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NNZ65Z0IyE

Another game that takes advantage of the GBA->GCN link cable with 3 players on the TV's and 1 on the GBA: Pac-Man VS. P1 (GBA) is pacman on the GBA (can see whole screen), P2,P3,P4 are the ghosts (FOV limited), the game has a REALLY FUN multiplayer format with indicators for swapping controllers around and everything, too bad this "GBA link" feature wasn't explored more by Nintendo (actually it's something that was used in that one WiiU Nintendoland game where Toads on the TV chase a player on the Gamepad). Here's gameplay of it, left side is the TV, right side is the 1 GBA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L4RCbRQxyI

Just remember, GBA Sp's are not cheap in good condition, so try out Pac-Man VS as it only requires one GBA, and if your friends liek it enough, then maybe consider getting more to play Four Swords until you have 4 GBA's w/link cables. Here's what my completed setup looks like:

Pretty much. That they match up with all the other boxes is pretty good as well from a collectability standpoint. This is true for like every system's games, not just GCN. Greatest hits versions are always worth less.

If you've ever seen a European "Platinum" (=greatest hits) reissue of a PS3 game you'll know why. Or the NA GH versions of PSOne game with that butt ugly green banner.

I'm always wondering what the fuck Sony in each region was/is thinking with these horrific looking designs that ruin every box. The one exception is the North American GH design for PS3 games with a red case and a matching red banner. Those look actually better in most cases!

Yesterday I saw Crystal Chronicles for about $40, and Luigi's Mansion for $60. Both were in very good condition.

Here is the thing, I'd love to play Luigi's Mansion, but I have never played Crystal Chronicles. Which one do you guys recommend?

LM.

CC is made for co-op. Unless you have 4 GBAs plus Link Cables and 3 people to dig into that, you're better off with Luigi's Mansion for that price (40 is too much for CC anyway).

No. Nooooooo.

I guess it kind of serves two purposes though, it makes them stand out on the shelves. When a game has a Greatest Hits or Players Choice label it says "hey, I'm a popular/well-received game" which could encourage some people to check it out or buy it.

And it makes collectors want to buy earlier lest they be stuck seeking out original copies, so they get those sales too.

Thanks. I didn't know that CC was made for co-op. I assumed it was more on the vein of the CC on Wii.

Last question, how long is Luigi's Mansion? 6 hours?

Just to be clear, FFCC can be played solo of course but it's a co-op game at heart. You're likely to get annoyed if you play this by yourself without the full team of human-controlled characters.

LM is 6.5 hours for an average run, yep. Dark Moon took me about 20 hours for a regular run, so the original is considerably shorter. It's a fun game, though.

Both LM games feel very different from each other. I would definitely give the GCN game a try. It's a charming little launch title that was a bit overshadowed by Halo, Pikmin, and SSBM at the time.

^^ Thanks both of you guys. Didn't know that Dark Moon was longer o.o

Yep; as Peltz said they're pretty different kinds of games. Both with similar core gameplay, but they do make for very different experiences. In a way the original feels more arcade-y to me where the 3DS sequel is more of an in-depth experience. Both are fun for sure, though!

Also note this about Luigi's Mansion.

http://www.mariowiki.com/Luigi's_Mansion#PAL_Differences
The PAL version of Luigi's Mansion (Europe and Australia) increased the number of changes for [POST GAME SPOILER]
the Hidden Mansion
:

  • The PAL Hidden Mansion is mirrored from left to right when compared to the Normal Mansion. The NTSC version keeps the layout the same.
  • There are more normal ghosts around the mansion.
  • Bosses are more difficult, having different attacks. (Chauncey's rocking horses, for example, are much bigger, and swerve left to right instead of going straight). A major change in the Boolossus battle is that the player rides around on the vacuum cleaner while trying to pop Boolossus, making movement more slippery.
  • Rooms are much darker in the PAL version; this, however, is only as dark as in the NTSC version of both mansions, the normal PAL mansion being lighter.
  • Most Boos have more HP in the PAL version, although some have less.
  • Fewer hearts. Locations that have hearts in the Normal Mansion do not have them. Hearts that heal 50 HP exist in the Courtyard by vacuuming the Slim Bankshot-like statue.
  • Speedy Spirits and Gold Mice always give up a Silver Diamond when caught, raising the maximum possible amount of money from 142,390,000G to 186,440,000G[1]. Since the requirement to achieve a Rank A mansion in PAL regions is higher than the amount of money in the normal mansion, it is necessary to play through the hidden mansion to receive Rank A in those regions.
  • 45 rather than 40 Boos are required to fight the final boss.
  • Boos are, in general, more agile and difficult to catch.
  • Five ghosts rather than three fight Luigi in The Artist's Studio.
  • Luigi rides on the Poltergust's wheels to capture Boolossus.
These changes were made after American and Japanese gamers complained that the Hidden Mansion offered virtually no changes. Shigeru Miyamoto himself thought up some things to add to the PAL version's Hidden Mansion. Most of the changes made seem to make the PAL version harder than the NTSC version.

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what the UK Wind Waker/Ocarina of Time set is worth? Unsealed but complete. Cheers

I had a quick look on eBay, seen a few for £25-35. I reckon the value used to be higher but dropped due to OOT 3D and Wind Waker HD.

Just bought Everything or Nothing on eBay, apparently new and sealed. User has 100% positive feedback, so shouldn't be a problem!

I've been wanting to grab this for ages. Seller has two more copies as well.

I bought one a few months ago after I read a thread about it on here. New and sealed, was around $20 if I recall correctly. Have yet to get around to playing it though.

The GC controller's analog sticks are super easy to fix, just look for an official controller on amazon or eBay and swap the stick. Literally takes 5 minutes to do.

I did this to one of my wavebirds a few months ago

Haha, I'm trying to repair a wavebird as well, but I still want to avoid buying a whole new controller just for the sticks, if at all possible. I'm asking my friends if they have any broken controllers as well, but as it turns out those things are quite durable and I haven't found another broken one yet.

INterested in replaying some of my old GC games but realized today that I lost my Memory Card 251. I still have the old 59 but PSO alone takes up that entire card. I noticed that there are some Amazon sellers selling cards at decent prices anything I should look out for?

I got a bunch of 251s off eBay from Japan, think I got 3 for $24 USD or so from hit-japan.

Over the last week I realized that I have never played Super Mario Sunshine. So what did I do on the night Christmas? Bought a good condition copy off eBay for $40 shipped.

And now I'm eyeing copies of Baten Kaitos Origin and Skies of Arcadia Legends. Ugh... this is going to be expensive.

After watching the Matthewmatosis Majora's Mask video I was in the mood to play it so I booted up the collector's version, I had an old save that I still hadn't completed fully.

Anyway, this is probably known but playing the game through Wii homebrew using Devolution, it made the frame rate a lot better than when using the disk in the system. I went back to the disk last night to compare Clock Town and it was a lot worse.

Not that it matters much, but maybe if others out there only have the Cube version currently and want to play it a little before the 3DS version, it's handy to know it's not as bad.

So after 2 years of sitting on my shelf, I've finally played Metroid Prime.

I absolutely love this game, and am halfway through it.

Man, I'd give anything to experience that game for the first time again. Such an incredible adventure. And it was a cool time in my life.

Point is, good call on finally giving the game a shot.

Smart decision, top notch game.

I've played it at least three times now, and have found that each time I appreciate it a little more (you tend to notice details that you didn't on subsequent play-throughs. What a fantastic game.

Ugh... I can't find my official SNES/GC s-video cable. So I decided to take the plunge on a GC component cable. Good lord, these things are going for $175 these days. I tried to bid on one this morning, but $171 was too little.

Guess I'll wait for the next auction.

I've seen buy it now prices of $150 on more than one occasion. Stay patient, and good luck.

150 bucks is pure luck and would be sold quickly if someone sees that, the lowest is usually 190-200. And it won't get any cheaper as time progresses.=(

I bought Gamecube D-terminal cables just a couple months ago for a hair under $100.

Don't bother with BINs. Patience is a virtue.
