The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Damn, I was lookin' through an old 2003 promo pamphlet and Nintendo was advertising Nintendo Puzzle Collection for North America. I wish that came out in NA.

Interesting. Wonder if this will go down as another fully translated unreleased title by Nintendo. I still would love to officially play Sim City NES and Earthbound on NES.

I found the Gamecube preview disc. It's the one that had demos of Soul Calibur 2, Billy Hatcher, Sonic Adventure 2 and Splinter Cell. Also had hype videos for FZero GX and 1080 Avalanche (then known as 1080 White Storm IIRC) that I replayed over and over. As I remember it this was available by mail order. Anyone know if there is any sort of demand for it?

Does it also have Viewtiful Joe on it? If so, I have that disc and I remember buying it at a store.

And get this, Nintendo of Europe had Final Fantasy VI actually translated, too (at least into German). God damnit. It could've been Europe's first FF game.

i have three promo discs, which were sent out to be played at retailers. i got them, when i was doing an internship at a retailer and the manager didnt care less.

i never saw them online or being sold anywhere else, are you sure they were given out to customers?

at least this was the case in germany.

Man does it feel good to use a real, new, actual Nintendo GC controller after all these years. I didn't realize how worn out mine had become.

I had this preview disc, and I believe I purchased it at a Kmart or Target in the U.S. for $10. It's what sold me on Viewtiful Joe. Played that demo to death, and loved both games.

So just how much of a difference is there between Gamecube component 480p and Wii component 480p? Yeah, I know there are videos, but does anyone here have first hand experience?

If you do a google search for this thread with these keywords you'll end up on earlier pages with pic comparisons and discussions about just that.

I'd actually advise against doing against that. There's several pages of misinformation in this thread. In short: There is a difference but for most it's small.

Yeah, that's probably the best comparison of the two around. Either way just for the sake of an extra screen of comparison here's my post from earlier in the thread with a windwaker title screen comparison

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=118875266&postcount=2728

Thanks for the link to your screens.

So, yeah, GC component is definitely better. But not $180 to $200 better, in my opinion. I need to stop watching eBay auction and get the cable out of my head.

If you use an HDTV, mod your Wii U to play Gamecube games and you'll get a picture as good as the Gamecube component cables. The built in upscaler will probably be better than the one in your TV too.

The only thing is no Game Boy Player.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I'll do it again here since it's come up again:

Hunt for a damaged or cheap D-Terminal Gamecube cable. It is literally the exact same cable as the Component one, and you can either get an adapter or actually physically re-terminate the end into component. I paid $50 for mine on YAJ, and spliced it into Component.

Good call. I managed to get a cable many years ago before the prices went into the triple digits. I feel if you dump that amount of cash onto a cable, you're gonna force yourself to see a "huge" difference when in reality you actually barely notice much of it during gameplay.

Agreed. In practice, it's not a significant difference. I'd only suggest it to people who REALLY love the original Gamecube hardware. Or you're super into Gameboy Advance.

And no 100% compatibility either.

so basically there's some SLIGHT signal bleed on the Wii's component signal, yet it seems to help somewhat with apparent aliasing where aliasing happens to be present in the GC component signal.

Of course using a legit GC would net the highest IQ but only by a slight margin that is only noticeable to the untrained eye in side-by-side comparisons. Whether such a slight margin of IQ improvement is worth the cost of a GC component cable, is not for me to decide.

Why not just buy a DOL-001 Wii with GC ports, component cables, a compatible USB HDD formatted to FAT32, homebrew your Wii, and rip your pristine GC/Wii collection onto the harddrive with any common USB loader software, you get the benefits of playing your GC games in component, you get access to true widescreen toggles (without the usual asset pop-in), and your original GC discs are safe from being reused and can be kept in their near mint conditions. It's what I did. the only thing I don't miss is not being able to use the GC mic to play Hey You Pikachu. jajaja

Or just get a WiiU and use Nintendont. BTW has anyone revisited the component video quality comparison by including the WiiU's output? Would make for an interesting read to say the least.

Thankfully I have a GBA SP AGS-101 that I prefer to the GB player.

My man. :D I use 2 101's and 2 non-backlit models in my GC playthroughs of 4 swords, SOGOOD.gif.

And no 100% compatibility either.
It has 100% compatability. What do you mean?

Maybe some accessories like microphone or GB link cable don't work (yet), but software-wise it is a perfect Gamecube.

Nintendon't doesn't work with every game, hell I get bugs and freezes on some games.

Hold up, what's this about widescreen toggles? Is there an issue with widescreen GC games on the Wii?

lots of GC games support 480p, few of those actually support true 16:9 widescreen. CFG-USB-Loader-Mod and USBLoaderGX both have per-game toggles for 16:9 widescreen hacks that work, without introducing asset pop in. It is a hack called Swiss and was used with Dolphin emulator before it was implemented in USB loaders.

to quote another user: "With Dolphin's default widescreen hack certain object will not be drawn when outside of the game's standard 4:3 field of view, meaning that the objects will be invisible on the far left/right edges of the screen and then suddenly pop in when they enter the center of the screen. The Swiss widescreen hack eliminates this problem and makes all the objects drawn in the entire field of view."

here's the compatibility list www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=Swiss/Forced_Progressive_Compatibility_List

here is a list of GCN games with native 480p and 16:9 support: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_GameCube_games_with_480p_and_16:9_support

I'm pretty sure the analog sticks in those new Smash controllers are actually different in feel to the originals. I have a near new white GameCube controller, and a new Smash one, and the Smash one feels like it has a slightly heavier resistance to movement. It's still a fantastic stick, but I swear it feels different to use.

I spent a little bit of time last night comparing my new one to my old one.

Verdict: New one is better.

There's more tension in the sticks, no question. C is closer to the original, and if anything the movement stick has been brought closer to C. Feels a little more "precise" to me if anything. I played a decent amount of GBA stuff on it, and the stick is a bit more suitable than the old one. Now, this difference in tension COULD be the age of my old pads, but I don't know.

Buttons are far clickier on the new pad. Again, could be age, but I'd guess the rubber Nintendo uses has changed over the years, or they've changed suppliers.

The strangest thing to me is the complete lack of a Gamecube logo anywhere on the new ones. My old pads had it printed and of course that's gone, but they also had it molded under the C Stick, on the back. The new pads have a different text layout, and while they say "Nintendo Gamecube" in molding, the old logo is completely gone. It's also absent from all documentation in the box.

lol i wonder if the gamecube logo was designed by someone and they don't want to pay royalties.

Who knows. It's such a strange omission, but clearly intentional. I'd be curious to know if the Japanese market pads are also missing it. I assume that NOA was like "We don't want to confuse consumers" like always. I'm sure that's why the Gamecube Adapter no longer works with other games... Nintendo probably thought someone would get angry at them when there was no select button or something.

Had a pretty random find today, walked into a gamestop to grab tales of hearts R and right there in the used wii section was a pretty good condition black GC controller for 1.50. Asked the guys there and no one had any idea where it came from :)

Finally have my copy of Gotcha Force! Looks good with only minor wear. Had trouble finding a complete copy so I'm totally happy to have this one out of the way. I need to get some new pictures, but I still have a lot I want to pick up but with Gotcha Force, and most of the other rare/expensive ones out of the way it should be much, much, easier now.

Just got this puppy off Craigslist for $70! I thought I would never get this game or pay through the nose for it. :)

::EDIT:: :::IMPORTANT QUESTION::: ::EDIT::

Just got home to try and play it and my DOL-001 won't play it. I can boot to the system's OS menu and the console recognizes that the game disc is Gotcha Force; however, when it launches, I get a disc read error.

Thankfully I have 4 other Cubes handy (3 are DOL-001 and 1 is a DOL-101). None of the DOL-001 Cubes will play the game with the Component video cable. One will go immediantly to a black screen with yellow text saying the game disc won't read, but the other 2 will start to play, but after 3 seconds, the game will freeze and I will get the disc read error message. All you see is "Presented by Nintendo" on a black screen before it stops.

The DOL-101 will play it just fine, but that uses the Composite video cable only. Is this a known issue with Gotcha Force? I have done a quick Google search, but I can't find anything like this issue being reported. The box doesn't mention the game having progressive scan mode, but I have never heard of a Cube game not playing with component cables; just some Dreamcast games with the VGA adapter.

I have tried playing it on the DOL-001 with composite, but I still have the read errors.

I've always seen the cover of this game but never the gameplay, but was the gundam vs gundam series built from this engine?. Now I really wanna play this game but the prices wow, even a Japanese import is on the expensive side.

edit: Yep the same team that made this carried over to the gundam vs gundam series :O

I'm happy this thread exists.

I should round up my gc games and post them as well one of these days. Just bought the black smash controller and imported a white japanese one. The only original controller I have the one that came with the gc and it's still the only good one I have - all others I bought over the years broke down or have flaws. Nintendo makes unholy hardware (or should I say made..? don't know about recent stuff)

Every now and then I get the itch to buy used gc games on the internet. Last batch had NFS 4 and Carbon (the first and I think last Need for Speed on the GC platform) among others and it was really interesting to play them back to back for different reasons. One looks almost like a late N64 game the other almost like a 360 title. Also NFS3 always was my favourite in the series and I played it to death on pc. 4 wasn't that different and seeing it now I realize how much of that now is pure nostalgia. It controls sluggish and feels really slow.

A weird thing I noticed is how cheap the gc itself seems to be used. It's often equally priced to a used controller. Is there a reason for that? People dumping these left and right? I don't get it. But I was thinking of getting a spare one, just in case. Also I always wanted to get the silver one (bought the black one at release back then because I couldn't wait for the release of StarCraft: Ghost)

I'll probably list my games at some point (not the biggest of collections but I think it's decent.) But for now I think it's easier to name what I want to have the most: Mega Man X collection, Pikmin 2, Metal Gear TS, Baten Kaitos Origins - can someone put an estimated price on these? Every time I see them they seem waaaay overprized.

Absolutely loved my GCN! The console launched while I was in high school; it was the first console that I shelled out my own hard-earned money for. The most remarkable thing for me about the Game Cube is that it's arguably the only true "portable" home console in video game history. I had the licensed Nintendo 'carry bag', which held the console, cables and all four controllers (including Wave Bird dongles)...the whole thing was slightly larger than a fanny pack. Amazing! I also had two of the zipper disc wallets which held 12 games a piece, attachable to the carry bag via clips. Let me tell you, that carry bag got a LOT of use in high school and college...taking it to friends' houses for weekend sleepovers, back and forth between college dorm rooms constantly...

My GCN collection (sorry no pics):

-Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
-Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
-Tony Hawk's Underground
-Roadkill (anyone remember this car combat gem?!)
-007 Agent Under Fire
-Time Splitters 2
-Time Splitters Future Perfect (EPIC...map maker, anyone?)
-Wave Race: Blue Storm
-Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (amazing game!)
-Wario Ware, Inc. (incredible party game!)
-Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (carried me through many late college nights...)
-Soul Calibur 2
-Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GCN cult classic!!)
-Super Smash Bros. Melee
-Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time; Windwaker pre-order bonus edition (with Master Quest!)
-Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker
-NBA Live '06
-Mario Kart: Double Dash

It's a shame it's so expensive nowadays. I'd love to see this game get a revival.

Funny enough, it was reprinted in 2012 in Japan
