The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I really wish Nintendo/SKIP would make one for WiiU, chibi robo is one of my favourite series. I respect Nintendo for rescuing it from unreleased limbo, it's such a charming game, the world needs more chibi.

The second DS game is amazing, it takes the gamecube version mechanics and then expands upon it even more.

Chibi Robo is a goddamned treasure.

I'm still sad that Dave from Game Sack talked so much shit about it.

Dave from GameSack seems pretty along for the ride. I've got issues with a number of the things he says. The Pink Ranger thing in "Same Name, Different Game" really creeped me out.

Impotaku seems to think they work on a select few other games. Going by the breadth of their library I'm included to believe that's the case.

Edit: This seems to be a compatibility list

Oops, sorry about that.

Let me re-phrase, though - I just wanted to convey that this doesn't allow you to use an SD card as a normal Gamecube memory card, or backup your saves to your PC, which is what came to my mind when I saw it.

Overall I like Game Sack and I do remember that episode but I think Dave was just trying to be funny.

I like Gamesack a lot; it's probably one of my favorite YouTube channels. Dave just kind of doesn't stick the landing on things like that though. Joe is a class act and great you all around, so it balances out.

Haha, Joe has strongly worded opinions and very thin skin. Bad combination online.

A truly awesome experience. You won't believe how clever a story the game has.

Gameplay has a certain Anilmal Crossing meets Zelda vibe. It's repetitive, but in a relaxing way.

I'm quite a way into it now. Yeah, it's legit good, and not just a game people pretend to like just because its obscure and quirky.

What about Custom Robo?

On that note, are there any Japanese releases that are actually in English or have an English option?

Biohazard (REmake) is fully voiced in English, but the menus and such are in the usual "Japanese". Which is to say, there's English all over the place, just like in most Japanese games. I'm amazed every time I boot up a Japanese game at how much English they have in them.

IIRC, Melee has an English option in its menu.

The only Japanese gamecube game i can think of that has full english options is eternal darkness, the voices are in english already but in the options there is a setting to turn all the text to english as well.

Orange? or Indigo?

Orange? or Indigo?

I will never be able to decide which color I like better.

purple pimp juice sippin grimace shade alla way for me, ill never forget how baller that was in '01 when everyone was on their black PS2/Xboxs and here comes the sam jackson lightsaber of launch colors like AND WHAT

I'm replaying Eternal Darkness in juxtaposition with Chibi Robo right now... need a little darkness to chase down the quirkiness.

Anyway, its my first time playing it since I last completed it like 12 years ago! Holly hell, the years were not kind to this game's graphics. Real talk: Eternal Darkness' graphics are kinda bad. Such cheap ass effects everywhere. The story and presentation are a little bit amusingly pretentious at times. I'm still enjoying it though. It's still creepy, surprisingly enough. The RPG magic elements in this game are possibly the only ones I ever liked out of all games I ever played. I don't know what it is. Normally spell casting in games comes off as something less than tactile for me. Like I feel disconnected from the action, but this game feels different somehow.

I just played and completed Chibi Robo for the first time, what an amazing game, I'm surprise by how mature and serious the story line is while being one of the cutest and most charming games ever made.

Chibi Robo for smash!

I didn't really like the way the game looked when it was new. It was a pretty jank looking game amidst an era of very pretty and colourful GC games.

Same here. I bought it for $5, never got into it, and sold my copy. I didn't realize it had such a following until years later.

Looking back at it now, I say it's good. I used to think it was great back in the day, but that's when I was a starved GameCube only Sony hating gamer. The droughts on GameCube were just turrubul.

I have a friend who just played through ED and really enjoyed his time with it.. I respect his opinion.

It's funny though because he's 20 and he sees ED as like... some long lost classic from a halcyon era before his time. I was there and it was such a minor game of the era so I was like "okay......."

He was scolding me for buying the game over a decade ago and never playing much of it.

The one game I don't understand why people bring up as totally positive is Geist. I bought it, witnessed the cardboard characters; the one word voice acting accompanied by text; the cheesy as fuck plot; and the cool for a minute mechanics, and I promptly returned it.

what does ur friend think of Illbleed?

It's what, nearly half eBay prices now? Not sure they'll drop it much lower, but I'll keep you posted.
Understood. I want them but not so keen to spend so much on cables. I do already have RGB scary cable, so I'm going to have a try with those and see how the quality fares and if I think it's worth to just stick with those.

Hey Gamecube GAF. I didn't see anything in the OP about fixing controllers but maybe you guys have discussed this or have useful links somewhere in this thread. Let me describe what issue I am having with my Gamecube controller.

Issue: Left analog stick overregistering when moving east. As in I was playing a game where I select an item by pressing east on the analog stick. However it then reads it as moving to the east twice and moves the item to an opponent. This issue does not happen when I select south, west, or north on the controller. Those 3 directions register once and then I can input my next move. Moving east though the controller is too eager to register the input.

Does that make sense? The stick is not loose. It's just suddenly more sensitive going in that direction.

Issue 2: Playing Paper Mario TTYD. I am running and holding a direction on the stick. If I hold the stick and move around the perimeter if I get to the direction north east Mario stops running and starts walking. If my stick is in neutral position and I move to north east then he runs like normal. Again it appears to be some kind of detection problem. This may seem minor but it is honestly a genuine issue and I fear my controller will only get worse.

So finally I'm curious if you can point me to any quality fix it yourself sites or videos. If you guys think this requires a replacement part where could I buy replacement parts?

TL;DR something wrong is happening when I push the analog in the direction of east and north east.

^I'm not 100% GameCube know all on this, the steps I would take are:
Making sure the console and controller are turned off then putting it back in so the controller doesn't drift.
Try on other games
Try other controllers on the same game
Disassembling the controller and seeing if it's dirty inside which could be causing the issue > Then check the connections > Check the sticks > Order new parts

For ordering new parts I look on eBay for broken controllers. A lot of them have broken buttons and/or sticks but mean that you can buy GameCube controller parts for cheap.
For taking your GameCube controller apart I recommend this guide. Even though it's for spray painting, it goes in depth about how to take a GameCube controller apart with care.

I had no idea this existed. Nintendo released a first party SD Card adapter (DOL-019) for the memory card slot along with Animal Crossing in Japan.

Oh damn I need to get that!

I'm playing Chibi Robo for the first time. So far it's a charming game. Hope it doesn't get too repetitive as I get further.

Check out Cubivore too. :)

Thanks BumblebeeCody. Appreciate the helpful tips. Definitely will take it apart first to see if it's just dirty on the inside. I know 100% that it is this one specific controller. I have a second less used one and I tried it on the same games in the same player 1 slot on both my Gamecube and for Smash 4 on Wii U. So I know for sure that this controller is indeed slightly messed up.

My poor pack in Gamecube controller :(

adjusted for inflation

When did this happen? I bought my Japanese copy off eBay for like £8. When did the price go up? You should see some of the artwork inside this game though. Creepy as shit. It goes right into the anatomy of a Cubivore like it's a bloody Mortal Kombat fatality.

No problem. Hopefully it gets fixed. I often go to car boot sales (yard sales) and find GameCube controllers for next to nothing.

Honest question, if I have a Wii hooked up to my TV via component cables already, is there any reason I would want a component cable for my GameCube? I see the component cable talked about a lot here, and I always wondered if it was simply people attached to their original hardware or if there were things the Wii could not do that the GameCube could that would make me want a GCN component cable that costs more than the price of a used Wii + component cable.

Assume that I am comparing with my softmodded Wii that lets me boot straight to GameCube games without entering Wii mode first. I know I wouldn't be able to use the GameBoy Player, but is there anything else GCN wise that I cannot experience using a Wii?

Also, I totally would understand if it is just being attached to old hardware. I strongly considered buying a component cable when it was $125 just to hear the GameCube startup sound when I played my games, but I can't justify the price now.

Basically what you said - Gameboy Player and attachment to the GC. Gamecube will give a slightly better picture than the Wii, but few people are going to agree that the difference is worth $200.

You pretty much covered it. There's a small, but marked, difference in quality, but the gameboy player is the biggest reason to want one of those. Or LAN play.

The only real reason... For now... To have them is for the GBP. Strictly for GC games though, you can do better with Nintendont on WiiU. So spend the major cash instead on a WiiU if you only have an interest in just playing GC games at the best possible quality.

agreed that component cables are absolutely not worth the price right now, and i love the shit out of having my GC hooked up instead of my wii

wait what does Nintendont specifically do, and are you just saying its better because you're digital-crazy right now televators

I do already have a Wii U, didn't know about Nintendont though (specifically that it claims to work with the Wii U GCN adapter?). If it truly does allow me to play GCN games on my Wii U through HDMI with a GameCube controller, that would seem to be the best option.

I thought about getting components just for my GBA collection... but the games look better on my GBAs anyway.

Yea, I have a backlit OG GBA and an AGS-101 SP, and I much prefer to play my GBA games on a handheld rather than a TV. I also really don't like using the GameCube controller analog stick or silly tiny d-pad for GBA games, so Gameboy player isn't really a functionality I care about.

Edit: I forgot you can technically hook up a GBA to the Cube and use it as a controller, but I still prefer my GBA games not blown up so big, many of them get quite pixellated on my TV.

I think the GB Player was the exact reason the Hori Gamecube pad existed, it was SNES styled except it had the GCN's button layout.

As you might know, the WiiU architecture is based on Wii... And the Wii as was often joked is a slightly buffed GameCube. Basically, Nintendont is not an emulator... You can even use the same app to enable backwards compatibility on Wiis that had the GameCube ports removed.

And yes, it is better because it's sending raw digital data. There is no degradation of image quality due to analog processes. I've seen it with my own eyes. 480p HDMI GameCube games destroy GameCube + component cables. It also sends digital audio which Nintendo overlooked with the GC. Nintendont also forces real 480p out of games that didn't support it like Swiss on GameCube. It also automatically patches games for widescreen support if there is a patch available from the mod community. The patch for Twilight Princess worked even better than it did on Swiss on GameCube. So yeah it talks, walks, and fucks like the GameCube could only wish. Wii? The fuck outta here with that shitty picture. Throw it in the garbage.

It works with both official and knockoff GC controller adapters with full analog trigger support. It's the goddamn promised land!
