Could this be some sort of output resolution mismatch? or perhaps an antialiasing filter? That's really odd.

I really have no idea, I was hoping that one user... What was his/her name... Rocket (?) might chime in. I guess he/she pops up mostly in the RGB thread though. My uneducated long shot guess is it might be some remnant filter from the PS1 version.
Did some cleaning yesterday and put all of my games and consoles in storage boxes. But not before I turned on my Panasonic Q and its custom Gameboy Player. Since it's chipped you can play US and Japanese region games. By holding the power button it switches to the US region (I actually forgot and had to look it up). I think the Q is pretty special, but the Gameboy Player even more. The Q has its own custom Gameboy Player, since the regular one doesn't fit below the Q. Anyway... just wanted to show the thing in action.

I'm not a big fan of the Q, but I really appreciate those photos. So many interesting ways to photograph thanks to the mirrored surface.

The Gamecube was the first system i bought during that gen. Loved the system from day 1. Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 was the game i got with it and loved that game. I still want a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine. Hell ill take a sequel to Super Mario 64 with the castle.

That Panasonic Q Gameboy Player is awful. Doesn't even match the Q's color scheme.

Yeah, I passed on one for my Q because I think it looks worse with it on there. I like the way it looks on a normal Gamecube, though, as long as it's the same color as the system.
Naw they eventually posted saying they'd decided against it, too expensive.
I'll post again if they relist.

I prefer most of the box art that I've seen. I only own NA versions but tge different artwork always catches my attention.

Not a fan of the cardboard sleeves. Too difficult to maintain. NA cases are better.

They're cool, aren't they? I've said many times that Nintendo of America made a mistake not using them, or a variant, over here. By using standard (more or less) DVD cases, the Gamecube section in a store just looked like more PS2 games. Even Microsoft had the idea to use (ugly) green cases to stand out - very smart given the whole Matrix thing that was still in full force at the time.
I've gotta agree here. Regardless of how good the JP cases may or may not look, having the outside be cardboard automatically makes it worse to me. Just the fact that every time you slide the game out you are damaging the case (like when you opened a SNES/N64 box) makes it too frustrating for a long term solution. There's a reason that of my whole retro Nintendo collection only my GCN games still have the boxes and manuals (well, my GB/GBC/GBA collection does too but thats only because my mom stored the boxes/manuals away from me and I just kept the games in a box separately).
Its the same reason I couldn't care less about collecting CIB games for NES/SNES/N64 but I do like having CIB Genesis games (at least the earlier ones with plastic cases).

You have a cool mom. I wish my parents had done something like that, or at least suggested "maybe you shouldn't rip the boxes apart to get to the game." GC was the first system I had where I kept the cases in good condition - didn't make sense to do anything else since the games were discs and not cartridges.

Gamecube slip covers are fragile but they don't get damaged at all from opening the cases if you are careful, with a flap on a box the stress of opening it will cause damage like on all other boxed games. The damage on Japanese cases comes from when you store them incorrectly, because the ends of the cases are rounded if you have people mistreat them then the card sleeve bends around them causing it to get tatty and worn.
It really comes down to how careful you are with games, if you are clumsy and treat your games like crap the Japanese covers wont last long. I have had all my Japanese cube games from launch and they look as new as ever, comes down to how careful you are.
Will still take the Japanese covers over those bland western dvd boxes they lack any character at all.

As far as Japanese copies go, I've never really been into collecting them. That seems like it just opens up so much of the world. It leaves each system's library less consistent than it already would be, and ends up with me wanting even more games than I already do.
I tell myself staying NA only is to reduce costs, because I have less stuff I'd ever want to buy. But then some games (especially stuff like Saturn) are way cheaper to import. In any case, I'm fine with mostly just not opening that gate.

I'm kind of fortunate at least, the old only cartridge system I still own many games for is the GBA. Got some DS cases and printed covers, and I actually prefer that to having cardboard boxes. Manuals don't fit though, unfortunately. For other cartridge systems I'm basically digital-only these days, relying on the VC. Probably nails on a chalkboard to a lot of retroGAF, but it's just a lot cheaper and easier to maintain.
GC, PS2, and GBA are the oldest systems I actually "collect" for.

Digital is definitely more practical. Not for me, but I think it's definitely a good choice.
I was always a Nintendo kid until I was a teenager (aside from the GG, which was pretty much my first system). I was only vaguely aware that Sega used legit boxes back then. SMS/Gen is probably the best packaging in video games.
Except for the stupid hang tab. It's ugly, slightly in the way. But I NEED it to be there. So many people cut it off...

I'm the proud owner of a Game Boy Player again! Won one on eBay for a decent price over the weekend and it showed up today... now to just get my Gamecube back...

Limited quantities + collector mentality.
In truth, they're not great. The D-pad is really stiff. I'd rather use an original Nintendo brand (or ACSIIpad!) SNES controller with a GCN controller adapter.
If you own a GCN->GBA adapter for games like Pac Man Vs. and FFCC, you can also use that to control Game Boy games on your GBA Player, if you don't think regular GCN controllers are up to the task.
Congrats! One of my favorite accessories of all time. Love playing gba over component to a large screen. I always wished that sony would have done something similar like a umd drive that would attach to a ps3 for psp games (love that they released the ps tv though).
I'm surprised at how well some of the gba games look blown up. What are you going to play first?

They're cool, but I wish the button configuration matched the standard SNES controller.
Eh, I prefer the GC buttons.
I generally use mine for GBA KoF or SF games, which is why I prefer a 2-over-2 button configuration.
Where is the option? Finally booted it up, and can't find anything. Voices are in English, sub's and menus in Japanese.

Also in the main game when you go into your inventory, if you goto the options part of the inventory there will be 4 options at the top of the screen in a cross pattern if you select the right most option it takes you to the screen where you can change the text in the game to english.
I didn't have access to my cube to try so i loaded it up on the wii, no matter what option i chose it didn't affect the text like it should have. Either that was one incredible insanity effect or it's buggy on the wii and on;y works properly on the cube as i definitely remember been really excited to read through all the letters in english i'm positive it used to change everything.
Let me know how you get on as it's bugging me now lol.

keep using the L & R triggers to cycle through the menus, at the bottom left and right of the screen there will be text on the buttons showing what page will come next if you press that button look for the one marked オプション
It's this screen, managed to find a pic. See the 4 buttons at the top it's the right most one marked display that you need.
on that screen there will be an option to change the aspect ratio, above is another option to change the text, i'm hoping it's that one. There will be 2 options that highlight when you select it either 日本語 (japanese) or 英語 (english)

Adam K is blacklisted in the Retro videophile thread, lmao. His videos are trash. I'm sure it's hard to fuck up with Gamecube though.
the japanese boxes wear out quite easily. i love the size and the boxart, sadly the boxes do not last long, if you dont store them away from light and care about the cardboard sleeve.
before spending tons of money for component cables, i go with rgb. its the best way to go and cheap and easy.
i still would love to know why the gc blows the ps2 away when you compare the video output... is there any reason or any proof?
first time hearing about that. the same goes for the xbox OG. the xbox had already sub-hd video out (i dont know what it exactly was called, but i remember that same games stated in the manual, that they offer a 480p output).

In that video he seemed knowledgeable until he fumbled up the whole PAL thing. Since using PAL GameCubes with component cables and buying NTSC copies is super simple and I didn't get at all why he was so dismissive of that whole idea. Unless he didn't want PAL people to import all the US games (too late lol)

This isn't an option unless you have a PAL cube, unfortunately.
Because the PS2 video out is garbage. There is plenty of discussion on the finer points of both the PS2 and gamecube video out, though I don't think there's any 1 individual source for all the info. Worth mentioning the GC's 480i video out is pretty poor, though. PS2 might actually be better though I'm not positive. (Source: the Shmups XRGB FM thread, last handful of pages)

I had no idea this existed. Nintendo released a first party SD Card adapter (DOL-019) for the memory card slot along with Animal Crossing in Japan.
Anyone know the max GIGS for this thing?
It's probably non SDHC so 1GB max
Aren't there 2GB SD cards? I am pretty sure I have them for my older Wii's. Though the point still stands.

I have five sets of GCN Component cables.
I own two Hori Digital Controllers - one black, one indigo.
I've got five WaveBirds, one of which hasn't even been opened (got it cheap, but didn't need it).
I own six regular GameCube systems - five of which have Broadband Adapters in them.
I own a Panasonic Q, also with the Broadband Adapter. It's been internally modified for JPN or US titles.
Each of my GameCubes have Game Boy Players, including the Panasonic Q with the special Game Boy Player for it.
ASCII keyboard controller. I love that thing.
2 of the Action Replay discs where you can enter your own codes.
Several of the games thrown around in thread are in my collection. Fire Emblem. Pikmin 2. The Metroid Prime/Wind Waker 2-Pack. Twilight Princess. I do want a copy of Pokemon Box though.
More fun for me - I have four copies of Avalanche 1080, four copies of Kirby: Air Ride, seven copies of Mario Kart: Double Dash (I think 4 of them are the copies with the bonus disc...)
I'm not trying to sound like I'm bragging - just was surprised to see all the demand for this stuff. So much of it I picked up super-cheap. Four of my component cables were bought at GameStop for under $5/pair. I knew they were hard to get at the time, but with what they're going for now... geesh.
