The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I'm a huge futuristic racing game fan so I bought Tube Slider at some point in the later '00s or so, but didn't like it much on my first impression, so I never did play much of it. The game feels kind of slow and lacking. It's not a bad game, but compared to F-Zero, or Wipeout, or Extreme-G, or Ballistics, it's not as good. Ballistics particularly makes Tube Slider look bad, considering how that's one of the few other tube-racing games and it's INCREDIBLY fast and technical. Maybe being a PC game it can do things a console game couldn't, but still.

tube slider is indeed quite a bit slower than your futuristic racer, and I guess it may feels lethargic in comparison to something like ballistics, but I didn't feel it was slow to the point of hurting it. there's also a faster speed class unlocked after you complete the initial set of championships.

That said, my favorite 6th-generation-exclusive console racing game (that is, excluding San Francisco Rush 2049, my favorite racing game ever but also available on the N64) is XGRA: Extreme-G Racing Association. I might be the only one who loves the game that much, but I do! Then F-Zero GX would be second.

xgra looks amazing. it's among the next games I'm looking to get for the original xbox.

Finally bought Fire Emblem and Paper Mario! Was waiting to get it cheap but I found out that it's not going to happen soon, meanwhile I noticed that the price (for Fire Emblem UKV version) got up in recent months so I just had to buy it. Got a nice price deal for the 2 combined though.

I do have Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Darkened Skye, but no, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that one day the card became totally unusable, and when I put it in the system it just reads as corrupt. You cannot access any data on the card, cannot reformat it to use it again, or anything, it's just a useless lump of plastic.

Afterwards I heard of problems with 1019 cards when used in Wiis (that they supposedly might die more often in Wiis than GCs), but I didn't have a Wii yet when the card died on me in '08 or '09, so that wasn't the cause.

So yeah, now I have five 251 cards instead. No issues with those.

I need a freeloader...

Hmmm, those games were said to simply corrupt your memory card and/or/ damage save files. I doubt save files can damage a memory card to that extend and it certainly is strange your memory card oputright broke. While I never have had a problem with mine, the 1019 are apparently of lesser build quality/more prone to interference than its 2 smaller (in capacity) siblings.

The wii may fry memory cards because of its design standing up; hot air in the system itself ascends outwards through the gamecube controller ports and memory cards thus possibly damaging memory cards in the process, which the 1019's where more susceptible to than others iirc, through overheating,

It may have been possible your gamecube accessed your (for example sonic save file) memory card continuously, because of failing at reading/writing (compatibility issues), and thus overheating/damaging it. Although this seems extremely far-fetched :)

That sounds pretty nice. My only experience with GCN steering wheels was a crappy Multi-platform ps2/Xbox/GameCube one from madcatz :/

Let me tell you something, that Logitech Speedforce wheel is so worth it. I've been using it for two weeks now and forgot to post on how awesome it is on here.

I've got one of those wheels (without the pedals) and R Racing Evolution. I've not played it for aaaaages but it's one of my favourite racers. That I still own it is testament to its quality. The handling takes a bt of getting used to, because it's arcadey and it's got a bit of a unique feeling. But if you stick with it you'll learn its intricacies and hopefully like it.

Decided to pick it up and I'm really glad I did. I've played a couple sim/arcade style racers but R:Racing is the best I've played. It could be because of the wheel though but still, it's fantastic.

Do it! And... does it really have interchangeable caps to fit the most common GameCube colors?

Yes, each wheel comes with three different colored caps which are black, indigo, and spice orange to match your Gamecube.

STORY TIME!

This past weekend I found an ad on craigslist of some guy selling a pair of GC Logitech Speedforce wheels with pedals for $25. Yes, two wheels and two pedals all for $25. Needless to say I bought that shit asap. The wheels are still available online but the pedals for some reason are MIA so I know I can make some decent money off this. I kind of want to keep them though since now I'm only 27 wheels away from having 30 player F-Zero races.

Speaking of F-Zero...god damn that game with this wheel. It fights you every step of the way. Every movement, every button press causes some reaction to the wheel. It's not just a simple rumble, it accurately moves depending on what's happening to your machine. Crash into a wall to your left, the wheel moves right. Someone boosting past next to you near by to your right, the wheel moves left a little. It is amazing that this type of game was released over ten years ago with this type of support.

But there is one problem. Like I mentioned earlier, because there are little to no videos of this wheel, I wanted to make a Let's Play to demonstrate how fantastic it is. I plugged in my Wii with component cables so I can get the best picture for the recording and unfortunately, the Wii has trouble running F-Zero GX with the wheel. The wheel works perfectly, but for some reason the emulation does not. I know Wii doesn't have perfect GC emulation but I've been able to play Grand Prix just fine with a controller but it does not work with the wheel. The moment I select a Grand Prix, a machine and about to enter the Machine settings screen, the game hangs on a black screen and the music still continues to play. Practice mode still works though but how can anyone do a Let's Play of F-Zero when all you can do is Practice mode. I haven't checked if a similar problem occurs in R:Racing or any other game but the only games I own that support the wheel are F-Zero and R:Racing.

So, I've been relegated to using my GC with AV cables. I've been so used to component that it's hard to go back but the wheel is too good that I kind of don't care that much anymore. That being said, I refuse to make a video until I get my hands on some GC component cables. This wheel deserves to be demonstrated in the highest quality video possible soooo...ya...I've joined the GC component hunting group. Wish me luck...

Good luck. I had a nice set up back in the day but my folks' home was robbed and my launch indigo cube (and JPN imported GBP) and component cables were stolen. I managed to get one in an auction that didn't list it in the title (but mentioned it in the description) along with a black cube (launch), wavebird, 2 memory cards, OG controller, and 12 games (including eternal darkness and every single resident evil and a few other quality titles) for a little over $200, so that definitely took the sting off having to replace it all...

about the whole memory card issue:

when i mixed jp/us/eu save files back then, my memory card corrupted (original nintendo one) this was the time when i read in a magazine with the test of f-zero that you shouldnt mix save files on a memorycard.
i was about to throw away the memory card since i couldnt access it when i came to the conclusion to insert the memory card in the OS-menu. i could access the memory card and see whats on it but it didnt work anymore with the game.
so ejecting and inserting it in the gc-os-menu might help out.

sucks that nintendo wasnt fully able to solve this problem. nintendo had problems when they released the memory pak for n64, where save files did go corrupt too...

@broritos:

i rarely use the backwards compability but i thought that wii is not just emulation but the real deal...? isnt real gc-hardware built into it?

Popped in F Zero GX over the weekend. Wow, the music from that game was really good. The sense of speed was pretty legit as well!

At least you have component cables now. The most ridiculously expensive video game accessory to date.

Well, according to Carmack its just two Gamecubes taped together.

Maybe I just need more tape.

I don't know if it's emulation or not but I know that it's not %100 percent perfect.

I've purchased them twice at this point (although the initial time was from Nintendo and the second time I probably ended up paying $10-$20 premium for the cables considering everything else I bought with the cables - all stuff I would have purchased otherwise). I have been surprised to shocked to see how much they go for recently.

Frankly I don't understand the price considering nintendont and dolphin exist.

It may be for the GameBoy Player. I'm unable to buy the SD media launcher in the US currently but it is my understanding that's one of the best ways to play GB/GBC/GBA games (and it would be a wired connection).

As for Nintendont, I choose to leave my Wii U unaltered since it cannot accept my GCN discs and I have the component setup. If I didn't have the cube it could be a different story, but I imagine it's the purists who desire the OG hardware as much as possible.

People who've recently paid >$150 for the cables could probably chime in and explain better, but one thing to keep in mind is the cost is all relative (e.g. I switched jobs and my gaming budget changed)

no, i heard its the actual hardware built into the wii....

about the richest accessory... well there are plenty of other accessories which are way more expensive these days....(the original price of the component cable was 40€)
as an example the broadband adapter for dc, the huge ass controller for xbox, real guitars for guitar hero or tablets as smart screens for consoles... so nope.

i really dont know why people are so obsessed with the cable since the differences between wii and gc arent that huge...
Boxed new wavebird for £40

Should I buy? Yes? No?

it wont become cheaper,...
just dont forget that the wavebird has no built-in vibration.

Just got custom robo yesterday and it is fucking awesome. The story mode is a bit slow at first but picks up later on and you can finish the story in a matter of hours. But the best part is unlocking parts to customize your robo. From body types to bombs and rocket pods, there are many to acquire and experiment with until you find the combination of parts that suits your playstyle. And even better, you can use the parts in vs mode to play with your friends or by yourself against the CPU. Oh, and if you think after beating the story you're done, then think again. You can play through story mode with the parts you unlocked to get more (and maybe even get some very rare powerful parts). Also there is a continuation of the story mode which is a series of tournaments to test your skills. In closing, if you like fighting robots and customizing your very own, I heartily recommend this game. Also
SEAL HEAD ROBO IS BEST ROBO!! FEAR THE SEAL!!!
That is all. c:

Okay guys, friday is just around the corner and I'm about to buy another game off amazon but I can only get one. And I have four choices to choose from, and the choices are:

Def Jam: Fight for NY
Timesplitters: Future Perfect
Fzero GX
007 Nightfire

I've been wanting Def Jam FFNY for the longest and plan to play with some friends when I buy it. But Timesplitters looks like a good time too, and I don't think I need to talk about how awesome Fzero Gx is and 007 nightfire has oddjobs hat as a weapon. So yeah I'm conflicted on this.

FZERO GX. F ZERO G X. One of the best games ever made period. I played it for the first time 2 years ago and DAMN. It quickly became one of my favourites. Very challenging though. The downside is, out of the above, it probably has the weakest multiplayer unless you're playing against someone else of comparable skill. The others will be more fun with friends I suppose, but F Zero GX is undoubtably my favourite single player racing game ever.

if u play local multi a lot, def jam or timesplitters are good choices.

edit: i played ts2, dunno how FP is

F-Zero GX is amazing and you should absolutely buy it. I agree it isn't that great in multiplayer though.

Time Splitters Future Perfect might be the better option if the price is good, because that game isn't cheap and has been going up last I saw.

Of course now that I look, I see F-Zero has doubled in price over the last year or so. I paid $13 for a complete copy for someone two years ago.

Nightfire multiplayer was fun back when I played it. I'd say pass on it for now if only because it is the cheapest of the four games so it probably won't be tough to find a decent price on later.

Don't know anything about Def Jam FFNY, so I can't comment on that.

Speaking of Future Perfect, I was pretty lucky when I picked that up. I got it and Time Splitters 2 for under $30 combined due to an eBay listing error, was listed as "Time Splitters 1&2," and was a BIN. Jumped on that immediately, since I didn't have either game.

For the first time in my entire life, I'm going to be using a Wavebird! I've been using wired controllers since the console came out, but I felt that it was time to step it up. It should be arriving soon! Also bought the Lord of the Rings: Two Towers game, because I have some pretty good memories of that.

He wouldn't accept any less. Bought two wired new white Smash Bros ones online for the same price instead.
Since you didn't buy it, can you please PM me the details, if possible? I'm interested in buying.

Please and thank you.

EDIT: @GustyGardens - I've always meant to buy The TwoTowers, but never got to it!

Another vote for fx zero gx, I popped it in for the first time in years last night. Played it on my wii via component, jaggies were pretty noticeable but you really dont care once the racing starts. The game is glorious in motion.

Man, remember when F-Zero GX was like $2 at GameStop because it had bombed so nasty and nobody wanted to play it?

=[

GameCube is latest victim of retro inflation.

It's been that way for a few years now.

- Exclusives that have never seen the light on subsequent Nintendo systems, or anywhere else for that matter.

- Less copies of multiplat games sold compared to ps2 and xbox, supply and demand

- Gamecubes are incredibly durable, so buy with confidence with little worries about the system breaking down anytime soon. And if it does, there's 100+ million Wiis out there with full BC

- Alot of multiplat games were given exclusive features in lieu of no online multiplayer( compared to ps2/xbox). Since online play is no longer a factor for that gen, that makes the Nintendo version nowadays the one to own.

Wii is inexpensive right now, but I'd expect the Nintendo tax to kick in soon for that system as well. Buy now while prices are cheap. I'm guessing the price hike skipped n64 due to many of the games not aging well( par for that era), and/or some of the better games available in some form elsewhere( Mario 64, Zelda OOT/MM, Starfox 64 have all been ported to DS/3DS, Conkers is on xbox and compatible with 360, Banjo is on xbox live, etc etc).

GameCube game prices going stupid probably has a lot to do with backwards compatible Wiis, since they are many more of those systems than GameCubes. Most GC games didn't ship in huge units, so new demand from Wii owners causes some problems.

Some Wii games are already getting expensive. Skyward Sword is still pricey new, even fairly expensive used. Nintendo stopped shipping that game really quick, so that's probably why. I don't see most Wii games getting the same price jump that GC got, if anything it'd be a lot more slow like PS2's.

I nabbed most of the major Wii released last year used between $2 and $10 each. I know those are going to be sky high in no time. Motion controls make them limited for porting and most 3rd party games failed to find their voice on Wii. TONS of hidden gems waiting to be rediscovered. Wii U backward compatibility will help people find these games just like Wii for GameCube.

Local sale on gumtree, looks to be sold now. sorry man

oh by the way, I'm currently setting up the final plans for my new home. Building it from scratch, one bedroom bungalow, large open plan living room, etc. This gives me the perfect opportunity to deck the living room out with shit I probably don't need. One thing I'm gonna do is have a panel near the sofa area for USB connections that will run to the entertainment unit under the TV - but I'm seriously considering adding gamecube ports to one of the panels too

just because I can
