I scored a copy of it a year back for $5. Never got around to playing it, but it looks like some kind of Chrono Cross successor graphically. I really should give it a shot.

Looking to finally try F-Zero AX on my GX disc. What's the best way to use cheats to unlock it using an SD Media Launcher?

I'd like to know more about this Wii HDMI adapter. I still have my OG Wii and am worried for when my current TV dies on me. A lot of TVs here in the UK don't com with component ports these days. How is the HDMI adapter? Any reviews?

Thanks.

As long as your expectations are reasonable, it's great.

Combined with a 1-2ms gaming monitor it's practically lagless, good enough for competitive Melee. This is mostly why it's good, since a lot of the cheaper HDMI dongles introduce lag.

It doesn't work any miracles on picture quality though. It's slightly washed out, but apart from that it's a clean conversion from component to HDMI. Given the lagless nature it doesn't do any scaling or clean up the image at all.

There are going to be better solutions, but probably nowhere near its price point (<$30).

RetroRGB posted an interview with the creator of the Badass Consoles GCVideo mod.

They talk a lot of shop about modding and oftentimes go into the weeds a bit ... But all of the info about the GCVideo mod is contained therein.

In short... It seems like it will do everything we want. It can support both HDMI digital and analog out (using a Wii component cable!). You can optionally set up one output method, or both. This will be true for both the internal mod and the external plug and play, though that will come later down the road. It doesn't seem like there will be major sacrifices with the external mod, except its on-screen menu will need to be controlled with buttons on the unit.

I'm stoked. This will definitely put to rest any need to buy the expensive overprice GameCube cables, as well as be the perfect HDMI solution. I'm waiting patiently for the external version (I miss you, Game Boy Player <3)

Back in stock in euro regions, not available in the US yet.

Said GC Video will be available by the end of the week.

While this certainly has advantages, I don't expect it to be too much cheaper than official component cables. An external box for the plug device can't be very cheap. It sounds like there's a processor and some ram to produce the OSD and weave deinterlace. Why I'd really like is a passthrough like the OSSC and forget about processors and RAM.

Edit: Actually, I wouldn't mind having it line double 240p GBP.

You should expect it to be a LOT cheaper than the official component cables.

The internal mod is going to be $50. Let's be generous and say the external one is double that at $100.

The official cables are going between $200-400 each....

We'll see I'm not setting my expectation high on the price for the external solution. I might just do the internal mod myself though - depending on how hard it is.

The internal version will probably cost a lot more for me because I'd have to buy it and pay for installation, which would probably more than double the cost. Especially since I'd want it to be clean and not some nasty cutouts on the back of the console.

At that point it will probably be cheaper to just use the external solution.

Is there more than one type of internal installation? I remember seeing an image in this thread of a GC with a horrible cutout on the back.

How does the external one look, any images?

Sounds like there will be one internal solution for analog and one for digital. He alluded to an option for both in the RGB video apparently.

There isn't too much information out yet.

Plugged my GC back in the for the first time in a long while. Ugh, looks like shit on my HDTV. Can't believe those component cables are going for nearly 400 now. Hopefully when these mods hit the market the prices will fall back to earth. No way it's worth that much when I have the Wii Component cables, Dolphin, and a Nintendont capable Wii U. Retro gaming prices are completely out of control.
Wut? 400? I have one in the attic.

Ah, my very first console. I have a number of games on here I love to bits: Tales of symphonia, LOZ Twilight Princess, Spongebob Squarepants Battle for Bikini Bottom, and Fire Emblem Path of radiance. Definitely an important part of my childhood.

So is there any reason not to pick the Wii version of Pikmin 2 over Gamecube?
Widescreen. Though the GC version can be forced widescreen, it's not as good because the UI elements will be stretched.

Otherwise as mentioned it's if you prefer the pointer. Pointer is the 'official' best method according to Miyamoto, who also recommended Wii Remote for Pikmin 3.

Gamecube version of pikmin 2 wins over the wii due to the e-reader support. There's an entire second game in there thanks to that, yeah nowdays there is a problem of the cards been really hard to find but if you have them then it's a massive puzzle game you get to play.

Even more pikmin is always a good thing.

holy crap I never even knew about Pikimin ereader stuff.

I even have the Japanese version of Pikmin 2 (which can play in English with an Action Replay)

to conclude:

if you just want to play Pikmin 2 in the best way possible, pick the NPC Wii port
if you're a purist or hate Wiimotes: pick the GCN original
if you're hardcore: buy both and hunt down the e-reader stuff

Pretty decent summary here lol.

I always thought Gamecube had some of the best console box art of any console out there. I was recently able to pick up two of my favorites for really good prices:

I have a soft spot for anything Wind Waker, but that Metroid Prime box is probably one of my favorite console boxes, period. Sooooooooooo nice.

They don't make em like that anymore!

Metroid Prime box is awesome!
Coiincidentally, regarding these two games. Does anyone own this:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001PBMEUC/?tag=neogaf0e-20

It seems like it was a NTSC only release but theres not much history as to where you could buy it and why they were made. Anyone here on GAF own this gem?

It's funny you ask, because somebody posted it on page 1 of August's pickup thread.

A couple of items I've been eagerly awaiting:

My GC already has a Xeno chip. It's a PAL system but is now region free due to the chip. Would this suffice, and if so, what else do I need...a memory card with a SD card slot?
Yeah you should be able to just get one of those cheap sd card adapters from ebay and burn the media launcher software to a disc. Or just burn Swiss to a disc instead since a modchip should be able to boot homebrew directly anyway.

The media launcher software is only really needed on unmodded systems as a way to boot homebrew.

Thanks for this. I don't have any means of burning to those 8cm mini discs though.

You don't have a DVD writer? Even though I haven't had an optical drive in my PC for nearly 10 years I just use an external USB one to burn to the 8cm discs for my cube. It really is a must when you have a XenoGC!

If you want to use the sd card adapter to boot backups with, so you dont have to burn discs, I can tell you that I haven't been able to boot any of the backups I've made. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there something wrong with my dumps, but yeah I just get a black screen. I don't have a modchip though.

Anyone have any insight into this? It should be possible right?

Homebrew works perfectly btw.
