The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I have a very special GameCube collection...

I own all but four of the in store, kiosk demo disks for the GameCube... and I'm trying to get the last four.

I also own the somewhat hard to find Soul Calibur II demo disk, along with a few others.

If anyone out there has any GC demos to trade, let me know....

I got Interactive Multi-Game Demo Disc Version 14, Metroid Prime Echoes Bonus Disc, Nintendo GameCube Preview Disc (Sonic DX, Spilnter Cell, Viewtiful Joe, Billy Hatcher, Soul Caliber 2, ect...), and the Mario Kart Double Dash Demo Disc. Also both Zelda collection discs.

Finally getting a chance to post in this thread after three days all-company training.

Here's my small Gamecube collection.

Two notes:

1. Yeah, that's Finding Nemo and yeah, it sucks. My son got it for Christmas when he was 3.

2. F-Zero, Metroid Prime, P.N.03, Viewtiful Joe, Rogue Leader, Beyond Good & Evil and Starfox Adventures were all part of this collection at one point but are no longer here for various reasons.

So how rare is that zelda collector edition disk, im pretty sure i bought mine from the used section of eb games like 5 years ago.

Now im reading in hyrule historia that it was a limited reward from club nintendo.

You've got Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, and that's all that matters in the long run :)

The method of getting it varied from place to place (you had to buy certain Gamecube bundles or mail in two barcodes from specific titles here in Australia, but we didn't have Club Nintendo at the time) but it was pretty limited. So it's probably kinda scarce but not super rare. One of those things were there are copies floating around, but demand generally outweighs supply.

I also got mine used (for a pretty decent price) from EB Games like five or six years ago.

I got it for free from NoA just for having five or more games registered on their site, as this was before they implemented the coins system. Here's a wiki entry on it: http://zeldawiki.org/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Collector's_Edition

On that page it lists graphical and sound problems with MM, but I don't remember having any issues when playing the game from start to finish, getting all the masks (but not all heart containers, I think).

aw, see...several on here talked me out of finally replaying MM (haven't since it launched) on said disc because they made it sound broken to hell & back...guess ill hold out a little longer to see if the remake comes to 3DS at this point

Just started playing Donkey Kong Jungle Beat this week and it is glorious. I'm not sure how I put it off for so long as I wanted to play it ever since it was first announced all those years ago. After having missed it on Cube I had intentions of getting the Wii version, thinking I'd actually prefer the standard controls. After playing this I get the feeling playing with standard controls really takes a lot of the fun out of this one, or at least what makes it feel so unique. Anyone play both of them before? What did you prefer?

Also, those bongos. So good.

A lot of the rhythm underlying the game design is still there with the standard controls, and you still get that same sense of building a flow, but there is something missing.

The New Play Control version is an adequate, enjoyable substitute for people that don't want to track down the bongos but compared to the original experience it's definitely missing that je nais se quoi.

I have always wanted to give Jungle Beat a proper try. Got Donkey Konga and used to have a blast with that (though it doesn't really hold up anymore in a post-Guitar Hero world IMO) but never found a copy of Jungle Beat.

Also, I came home this weekend, so took the opportunity to photograph my GameCube collection. On top of this there's of course a GameCube, about 5 various coloured controllers, a dodgy WaveBird and a GameBoy Player.

Apologies for the average camera, iPhone's camera is great under natural light, but under a light bulb it's a bit average.

I'm in the process of replacing all my PAL Gamecube games with NTSC versions. It's quite painful for my wallet.

I feel you. I sort of still want to do that myself. Once I educated myself about that whole progressive scan thing during the HD generation, I stopped buying PAL games almost entirely (unless I wanted something fast and cheap).

did anyone else ever check out the weirder side of the Wii homebrew scene? there was this version of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! that you'd play with the bongos...i think i made it to Piston Honda? barely survived Von Kaiser, shit was crazy

It's a decent platform/brawler, just kinda short. Has some nice dedicated platforming areas like Mario Sunshine's FLUDDless challenges and does some neat things with perspective in certain areas. Worth a look if you're a Wario fan or want to flesh out your Gamecube collection.

Its not super great. Not the worst game ever, but definitely not near Mario-tier.

Yea Warily World is pretty basic but still a really fun platformer.

Seems like something nice to pick up for cheap. Wasnt Treasure involved?

I feel like there's tons of copies out there, but it's so highly regarded as a collector's item that it can demand a high price.

I do wonder. With games like Viewtiful Joe that was initially a Gamecube only game, then later released on the PS2, did they ever do a print of the game without the "Only On" tab up in the corner? I bought my copy day one, but never really thought about it until recently.

a local gaffer's seeking GC component cables, did the well with AU nintendo dry up, or do i just need an AU address to ship them to?

I found a copy of Eternal Darkness stuck inbetween all my PS2 games yesterday. It's as if the rest of the Game Cube library didn't like it and banished it to another shelf!

Epic thread. Easily Nintendo's best console (aside from the SNES - we're not even going there).

Bought a Platnium Gamecube when they first came out and I've had it ever since - 2003?

Games: Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Primes 1 & 2, Eternal Darkness, SSB Melee (best version of the series, imo) . . . can't think of the others off the top of my head. I'm not home right now.

Also have a Platinum Wavebird but I think my dog chewed up my wired platinum controller at some point. No big deal, since sitting back playing WW in 480p with the Wavebird is awesome.

I'm thinking of adding Star Fox Assault to my collection. Thoughts on it? Any games (other than Baten Kaitos) I absolutely need to purchase?

Oh yeah -- I also have MGS Twin Snakes. Great, great, great fun.

Yesterday was Gamecube day, I played some RE4, REmake, WindWaker and MK Deadly Alliance.

To be frank I played MK just to unlock this, watch the MK History video and the Making Of. The game is filled with content! It reminds me I need to get Deception though, since it's the definitive version.

Definitely doing WindWaker this week though, I got hooked, it's been years since I played it entirely.

Anyone have any maintenance/cleaning tips? I dug all my Gamecube stuff out of boxes this weekend and found out that past me didn't really take great care of my stuff. I gave the console a wipe down so the shell looks like it's doing okay but I have some really dusty vents, my "open" button tends to stick as well. Is turning the console onto its side and blasting it with some compressed air safe? I can't think of any problems but one side also has a fan which probably shouldn't be rotating manually.

Last time I cleaned mine I placed a little metal pin on the left side to stop the fan when I was blowing air in it with an air compressor, did the job pretty well.

Your sticky 'open' button probably needs a good cleaning though, maybe you'll be obligated to open you GC to clean it, or just try to open the disc tray and try to clean it the best you can with alcohol and a Q-tip. Maybe that'll do the trick.

Oh and I always clean the 'Gamecube' sign on it with a microfiber cloth so that it won't get scratches...since that shit is a scratch magnet. :P

Dismantle the system, clean the shell with soap and water, and take a compressor to the circuit boards. Is it practical? Probably not, but it sure brings new life into all the worn down systems that came my way.

Thanks for the advice! I actually just went to go open it up, it looked simple enough but dear lawd I didn't realize the security screw would be my downfall. I've opened up a Gameboy, PS2 and a few others before so I thought it would be no big deal but it turns out I need to either buy a security bit or go mess with a plastic pen casing.

When I called last Monday, they implied there were a very small amount left, didn't give specifics though.

awesome! so what's the deal, it just has to be shipped to an AU address then? ive a friend in Brisbane, he's terrible at mailing things bout if that's all it takes, i should jump on this while i can.

I know someone who called just now and they still had them. It can be a New Zealand address too (since Nintendo Aus looks after us too) but it costs like $10 AUD for postage to here.

I haven't posted my collection pics yet, but don't lose hope Foetoid!
I only recently acquired it, but I plan to play it someday!

Unless i've missed a picture, i have to say i am bitterly and extremely disappointed with every collection picture i have seen so far here.

Tales of Symphonia is my number 1 favourite game of all time. Not just favourite on GC or favourite JRPG, just my actual number 1 "Best Ever". The game is brilliant, 60 hours of gorgeous graphics, breathtaking music, a "Smash Bros" style battle system, intricate character interactions, and more twists and turns than every FF game combined. Some parts are a bit cheesy sure, and the game is rare as now, but i've got over 200 hours racked up on my playthroughs as i carry over data to new games, 4 playthroughs total. I cannot possibly talk up the game enough, and i havent seen it in any pics here (tho granted i only saw half a dozen, i didn't read through the whole topic yet).

Where's the love for ToS?

EDIT: I just saw that "Sadist" has a copy. My faith in the Gaf has been restored :P

You must be glad for that rumor about a HD remaster that I just saw.

Btw I have it in my OP, and I saw many posts of people that have it as well, so hey it's not that bad. :P

EDIT: There's 4 people that have ToS in page 1 only! :D

Tales of Symphonia was in my picture. Along with Fire Emblem, Skies of Arcadia, and the Baten Kaitos games.

Which other RPGs for GCN are worth getting? I've gone back and forth on Lost Kingdoms/2, and now the price has kind of gone up (especially on 2). PSO is out due to the price. I've heard LotR: Third Age is a really good turn-based game, but I'm not sure if it's worth picking up on GCN or PS2.

Also, I know we have comparisons for Wii vs GCN component and GCN composite vs s-video/SCART, but does anyone have a comparison for GCN s-video vs Wii component? If the GCN is not substantially worse (or if it's better without the blurring) I might grab another GCN so I can use my GBPlayer and ditch the Wii and use the WiiU in it's place.

I played a friend's copy at the time, and did not find it particularly fun. I'm sure it is actually a fantastic game, it just didn't grab me at the time.

If one comes up for a reasonable price, you can bet I'll be grabbing it to have another try though.

I feel like I've got all the classics, but I always keep my eye out for more. I loved, loved, LOVED my cube. It's not hooked up because of the Wii backwards compatibility, but it's stored in such a way that if I ever need it, it's right there.

Mine was that way for a while.

Now that the Wii U is out though... it plays Wii games and seems more dependable than my actual Wii. The Cube is far, far more quick and convenient to start up games on than the Wii. Nevermind the excellent GameBoy Player and the potential to play PSO online. The Wii is the one left out in the rain here. The only problem is that I'll need to constantly switch the Wii U from one tv to the other after I eventually get an LCD. :(

Is my only option for 480p an official component cable that costs £150? :(

No, according to a post a few pages back, you can also order the only 3rd party solution available for EUR 133:
http://www.wolfsoft.de/shop/product...duct/gamecube-componenten-kabel-(yuv)-2m.html

Or, of course, use a Wii and its worse quality 480p (but it is 480p).

But the official cable should not be that expensive. I bought mine in BIN a few days back for US$ 115 plus shipping (ended US$ 145, since I live in South America).

It's kind of ironic that they are selling them in Australia but PAL GCNs can't even output 480p. Still improves picture quality, but probably not significantly over SCART.

And I'm probably just going to bite the bullet on another GCN + S-Video cable. Will just have to compare it myself.

Funny that if it isn't one region being screwed (US no RGB), it's another (PAL no 480p). Why were console manufacturers so schizo?

As far as I know, it's not our consoles that can't output, it's the games that don't have the capability. My NTSC games should be sweet, but not even all those have progressive scan I don't think.

Also we don't have SCART here so component is our best choice.
