I know the Mega Man Anniversary Collection is garbage on Gamecube, but how does the Mega Man X Collection control? Did they learn from their mistakes?
Sure did. Mega Man X Collection's defaults on all games are for A to jump and B to shoot, but every single game allows for button remapping, and I believe that from either X4 or X5 on, you can change the controls midgame from the pause menu. One negative that I saw on the controls was that you could only assign actions to the Z button (which I have been using for dashing, if available) for the PS1 games.
I played through most of MMX1 with a Wavebird with Y for shoot, A for jump, but I've switched to
a PS1 controller through a converter for the more comfortable D-pad since then.
The only other conceivable complaint is that all of the music is disc audio instead of sequenced/emulated SNES, so even on MMX1 and 2, the music eventually "stops and restarts" instead of looping, but it really hasn't bothered me at all.
Since it's on a 1GB GC disc, the videos from all of the PS1 games are really compressed-looking, but otherwise, saving is implemented in games that used to be password-only, it seems to use a legit 240i screen mode like the originals where applicable, it uses the PS1 version of MMX3, and it's all around a really nice collection of platformers that was handled well. I'm surprised that I don't hear about it more often -- it's one of the better SNES-PS1-era retro collections on the GameCube.
