Yo GC-Component GAF, how much did you pay for your cable?

Not a great deal, but I grabbed a boxed one from Japan this month. 9000 yens, plus deputity service and shippings. Ended being US$ 145 with EMS shipping (I requested SAL but the deputity upgraded it to EMS, so I ended paying more).

Yes, it is the PAL games that barries the 480p output not the console.

Maybe if you use a NTSC game with a freeloader even a PAL machine can output 480p.

i can confirm pal consoles output 480p when using ntsc games that sort the feature, just good down b i think whilst booting

)

I just got em from NAL thanks to a friend who lives down there and they should be heading my way shortly so I think it's like $45 or so plus whatever shipping stateside will entail. pretty stoked to not be paying like $200 though.

I got mine for ~$12 in Japan back when I was living over there. :)

I'm surprised they actually sold them over there as D-Terminal (D端子) seemed to be much more prevalent in JP TVs at the time.

Yup, I went with d terminal to my XRBG. It was a simpler cable, and delivers the same 480p goodness. And "only" $100 for a brand new cable, earlier this year!

Sadly, my original component cable had been lost in a move.

We talking about how we got our comp cables. I've been a lot luckier than most... which is unusual for me when it comes to retro games. What I normally have to do is either settle for big compromises or just bite the bullet and pay with fists full of money.

I actually had a GC comp cable back when they first came out. I can't remember what they cost back then, but it certainly wasn't hundreds of dollars. I traded those cables along with my minty platinum GC in order to get a Wii... Give me a time machine GAF... I'll do the honor of punching myself good and hard right in the belly.

Anyway, more recently I became a collector on the hunt for GC comp cables and I lucked out on a good samaritan ebay seller. She posted them for $65 Buy it now. She said she couldn't bring herself to make people pay more for a damn cable. It wasn't even a few weeks later that I'm looking through a rack of cables at goodwill and I grabed a really thick cable without looking at it directly. I was like "What is this in my hand?" *looks down at hand* "Holly shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!" 3 dollar GC comp cable...

That goodwill set, I just turned around and sold them on GAF for the same deal as the ebay deal I got. Even so, I still kinda feel guilty...

comp cables into XRGB is so gorgeous...keep wanting to replay Wind Waker but ill wait & see how HD turns out, i've got other stuff now that RE0, Star Fox, Billy Hatcher & Monkey Ball showed up (thanks again gunsmith!). still wondering how Sonic Heroes went if anyone's got impressions!
oh yeah, added MMX control missions to the list too.

decided to return the scratched Skies & won another copy for a few bucks more, but this one brings a 251-block (DOL-014) memory card, which is perfect since new games means i'm outta space.

and again, being the only one in my circle that championed this little guy in the early/mid-2000's its really cool seeing it get all this love now.

That goodwill set, I just turned around and sold them on GAF for the same deal as the ebay deal I got. Even so, I still kinda feel guilty...

i'm sure whoever got em off you was happy to pay less than full price, man.

Honestly as long as both parties are happy...

Anyway, I got mine from Nintendo's website right before they stopped selling em. Forget how much though.

So....GCubeGAF, this was like the easiest mod ever. It fits in perfectly without any modifications neccesary. Works great. (although it makes a different kind of sound than the C stick)

^nice, how's it handle?

PSO came in today! shame i don't have enough space on my memory cards for it right now, haha...waiting for the new card to show up before the grind begins anew!
this should hold me over till 2's localization i hope

I thought I got a pretty good deal on a component cable, but I may have been scammed, as the cable still hasn't shipped despite ordering it on the 13th. It was $59 +$18 shipping (from France to U.S.). Hopefully PayPal will help me get a refund if it turns out it's a scam.

Here's the site
, but again, it may be bullshit. I just noticed that the newest products were added in April 2011.

that sucks...i'm guessing you tried the chat option & other means to reach them about your order?

also paypal totally sides with the buyer these days, so i wouldn't worry too much about that at least

Handles great, it's definitely worth it for Smash and FPS games.

My GC Component cables are finally in my possession!
Even though it's not 480p (and I could occasionally see interlacing artifacts, especially when Kirby moved around in Melee) it still looks glorious! No pixels creeping about, no flickering, it's just so nice :D

I know the Mega Man Anniversary Collection is garbage on Gamecube, but how does the Mega Man X Collection control? Did they learn from their mistakes?

I considered doing this for one of my controllers, but I'm not sure I hate the C-stick enough.

Looks great though.

Yo GC-Component GAF, how much did you pay for your cable?

won an auction for a jet black cube with controller and the component cable for $96 earlier this year...funny thing was the word component was not listed in the listing and the seller would have attracted alot more attention if so.

Okay, so I did a Craigslist ad and got myself a Silver Wavebird, a Black GCube with Black Controller, and Crazy Taxi.

The Wavebird was in kind've bad condition, but I managed to fix it using parts from a third party controller I had for years. Now I'm currently in preparation to spray paint it red.

The Black GCube I'm debating on whether to refurbish it and sell it, or custom paint it or sell it. I currently have 5 GCubes as of now. Either way, this thread is actually making me realize that I love the GameCube more than the Nintendo 64 now. Haha

Damn!
I had a D-terminal cable for each of my consoles (GC, Wii, PS2, & PS3) when I was in Japan but none of my friends needed them and I figured I'd have no use for them Stateside so I unloaded them at a resale shop for ~300yen each when I left the country. :(

That's a killer deal, I got mine for 110$ from an Ebay seller that was selling it for more, but I talked him out and he dropped the price a bit. D:

I got mine at a local game store a few years ago for $40. The same store has one in stock right now and they are selling it for $100.

I threw in Metroid Prime as a little test of the component cables, and got an 'An error has occurred' when going through the ship, as a door was loading a new area. I fear that the disc drive may be on it's way out :(
Getting issues with the GB Player disc not being recognised as well, ahve to open and close the disc cover for it to be recognised.

Welp, new GameCube time I guess.

There's a control problem? I played it for a little while tonight and didn't have any problems. But then again I've never played a Mega Man game ever before tonight.

The functions mapped to A and B are "backwards" versus the way they usually are on NES controllers. People who played NES games a lot have a big problem with that. Didn't bother me at all, though... different systems have buttons in different places, after all.

I know the Mega Man Anniversary Collection is garbage on Gamecube, but how does the Mega Man X Collection control? Did they learn from their mistakes?
From what I remember you can re-map the controls so in that sense yes. Also there was a special 3rd party controller made that would flash colours depending on game actions. A real collector's item f you can find that.

I think fans were generally upset with the game due to pre-launch hype of features that never materialised (I think X1 and 2 were going to get arranged music or something).

Oh, by the way, I also have an ActionReplay that I found after taking the pictures, and I've lent my GCN to my cousins since I can still play its games on my Wii, but I've got a question about that...

Is there a way to use the GCN AR with my Wii, or will I have to get my Gamecube back if I ever want to use it again? I intend to check whether my AR is the one that lets you input new codes or not (I got it quite a long time ago... I think before Metroid Prime 2 was released), since if it does work I'd be looking forward to getting F-Zero GX and unlocking the AX content that isn't normaly available otherwise.

You would have to use homebrew on the Wii to boot the action replay disc. When I tried with Gecko region free (yes so an old version, not even Gecko OS) the AR loaded but went straight to some sort of error.

I had that issue with a few GC games actually. Usually ejecting the disc to force an error then putting it back in worked but with the AR you couldn't do that. So in summary: try using Gecko OS but it may not work.

Did Wii homebrew ever get Ocarina codes working on Gamecube stuff?

Ah, that's annoying. I have never installed the homebrew channel before, and I remember hearing that it'd constantly get deleted by Wii system updates, so I never cared to try it (although I guess now that the WiiU's out it won't be getting any more updates, right?).

Is Eternal Darkness still worth tracking down? I heard lots of good things about it but I'm not sure how well it holds up in the game play department. I'm also already familiar with most of its big scares.

I have no idea how much it's going for but I think it's still enjoyble, the game play could be better but I don't remember it making want to stop(for the record I last replayed it 2 years ago) If you haven't gone through the whole game then it's very much worth a run through, some really neat stuff there.

I wasn't crazy about it back when I tried it in... probably 2011 or 2010. Being familiar with the scares made it really dull in that department, and the combat felt mediocre to ok. I wouldn't recommend staying away from it, but if you're looking for something that really holds up, might want to look elsewhere imo.

(Also, look up Happy Video Game Nerd's reviews of the game. He goes into much more detail and put a lot more effort into trying to like it than I did, but seems to generally come to similar conclusions iirc.)

Ugh the GameCube version of Twilight Princess isn't that expensive, but it really shouldn't be as pricey as it is. It's not rare or something. >>

The curse of Nintendo first-party software. Some of them really hold their value well regardless of scarcity. It's crazy!

Eternal Darkness is my favorite 6th generation console game.

Rarity and expense are really not connected all that closely. Price is about how much people want a game, not how rare it is.

+1...some of it gets repetitive/controls can be slightly janky but it's a must for horror fans. at times i thought a few bosses were the weakest bits, compared to exploring the house & the great psych effects the game does, so good

I know the Mega Man Anniversary Collection is garbage on Gamecube, but how does the Mega Man X Collection control? Did they learn from their mistakes?

Sure did. Mega Man X Collection's defaults on all games are for A to jump and B to shoot, but every single game allows for button remapping, and I believe that from either X4 or X5 on, you can change the controls midgame from the pause menu. One negative that I saw on the controls was that you could only assign actions to the Z button (which I have been using for dashing, if available) for the PS1 games.

I played through most of MMX1 with a Wavebird with Y for shoot, A for jump, but I've switched to a PS1 controller through a converter for the more comfortable D-pad since then.

The only other conceivable complaint is that all of the music is disc audio instead of sequenced/emulated SNES, so even on MMX1 and 2, the music eventually "stops and restarts" instead of looping, but it really hasn't bothered me at all.

Since it's on a 1GB GC disc, the videos from all of the PS1 games are really compressed-looking, but otherwise, saving is implemented in games that used to be password-only, it seems to use a legit 240i screen mode like the originals where applicable, it uses the PS1 version of MMX3, and it's all around a really nice collection of platformers that was handled well. I'm surprised that I don't hear about it more often -- it's one of the better SNES-PS1-era retro collections on the GameCube.

Just got a copy of Doshin the Giant (PAL).
But I'm in NTSC land and I haven't gotten one of those region changers yet.
Goddamned region blocking.

damn, thought i was done with GC collecting but there's still a few i'm scouring around town/lowballing ebay offers for, haha

Ikaruga
Crazy Taxi (does this offer anything over the DC version? i hope it has the offspring stuff)
MMX Command Mission
Puyo Pop Fever
Sonic Gems/maybe Heroes but still on the fence
Twilight Princess - the GS near me that had it for like $30 w/case apparently closed up recently, which sucks given the discount these games now get. wish i knew someone'd who'd trade my complete wii version + like $20 or so and just be done with it, heh

debated RE2/3 but if nothing's really added to em it's not worth the hunt for me. i think that should be most of the sega/DC stuff i had left to get.

Can confirm that Crazy Taxi has the proper Offspring/Bad Religion soundtrack, that's the main reason I picked it up over the HD digital release.

Sonic Gems may be worthwhile for Sonic CD alone, depending on how much you enjoy Sonic CD, though the HD digital release is actually quite a bit better.
