The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

What and the hell has happened to Gamecube stuff in the last 6 months? I went to a local store and saw Gotcha Force for $50 and thinking they were overpriced, checked ebay. I was shocked to see it was going for even more than that. The damn prices are skyrocketing. I got that game for $10 in 2011 or so when Gamestop kept running their B2G1 free Gamecube sales.

Since when did the component cable go for close to $200? For the longest time it was $50-75. AHHHHHH!

How good of an investment are the Wavebird controllers? Also, I've been thinking about tracking down Geist, Mega Man Network Transmission, Pokemon XD and Four Swords Adventures to start things off. Any general opinions? c:

It's actually good. The battery last for the long time and work very well. Also, you don't have to worry about the wired lying around when playing a game or not enough wired if your console is far from you.

From 2009-2011 I was picking up 4-6 GCN games pretty much every time they did B2G1, and I'm really glad I did. Massive GCN backlog for life!

I was kinda bored and on a whim started playing some Rogue Leader for the first time in a few years again this weekend. I'm still floored by how amazing that game looks. Its just amazing, really sucks Factor 5 died and we couldn't get more games from them :(

Anyone know what my best bet for getting a replacement Gamecube game case is? I bought a game but the case turned out to be in pretty bad condition. I was thinking I would try and find a cheap shovelware game that's has the case in good condition but if I can buy the case itself then maybe it would be easier to go down that route.

eBay. You can get a bundle of empty cases for cheap.

I am trying to make my whishlist for Gamecube games so I can start the hunt. I am interested mainly in Nintendo published games and exclusive 3rd parties.

I heard that Disney Sports games (published by Konami) are pretty bad. Really? Should I avoid them?

Yes. Unless it's Mario Golf or Mario Tennis, it's bad.

Speaking of which, Mario Golf on Gamecube was absurdly fun and good.

well, trying to work in a list, got 69 games. I have 13 so far, so it will be a long road. I will try to grab first the Nintendo published games, since they are the most expensive and should get even worse in the future.

Does anyone know if the 3rd party "shockwave" wireless GC controller works? It caught my eye because of the giant dpad. Has to be better than the original gamecube, right?

HxTn1Ns.jpg

Solution to the expensive hori controller?

I had one a while back, they're not bad (as far as 3rd party controllers go), the Wavebird is still the better option.

Got Rogue Leader today from a fellow Gaffer.

I had it on release and then sold it when Rebel Strike came out. "BUT THIS GAME COMES WITH ROGUE LEADER, SO I AM GETTING IT ANYWAYS" I said...like an asshole.

My two WaveBird Controllers. Obviously painted the one that is now red. lol

Both controllers where in some bad shape. Gray one had broken joystick, sticky buttons, and messed up triggers. Used a donor 3rd party controller for repairs.

The red one (was gray) had the same issues, but also some ugly scuffs that I sanded out. Smooth as a baby's bottom now. lol :)

Now I'm spray painting an old wired black GC controller red too.

Is there any reason why we dont have an N64 thread?

Make one!

I think that the N64 is one of the consoles I don't anticipate collecting for though. It had it's share of fantastic games, but being able to source a controller in working condition seems rather difficult :\

On the topic of GameCube, I managed to find copies of Double Dash and Mario Smash Football locally yesterday. Double Dash I have owned, but my copy just up and disappeared at some point, and Smash Football I've never tried, looking forward to giving it a go.

Eh one thread is enough for me, just was putting the idea out there. I mean even the Master system has one.

There would be no challenge in collecting for it. You'd only have to find about a dozen games, a Rumble Pak, an Expansion Pak and a Controller Pak.

Guess you've got a point there.

the current N64 thread is Black Falcon's big review one, but no, we don't have a dedicated system one and i don't know why, i'd totally link to it & support it as well. it's the next system i want to build back a library for.

eh...ive got about a dozen at the top of my list, granted, but almost 30 titles overall i'd love to have, that's a pretty strong library by me. kinda salty today cause i just barely missed a craigslist for Smash Bros, Star Fox 64, Goldeneye, 2 others and a game shark for $50, wouldve been all over that.

on topic: got Skies in today, with the huge memory card! the card's awesome too cause the guy who owned it had amazing taste in games, and booting up his PSO 1/2, he's got an afro dude named Disco Stu at like level 106, and that's one of his 4 characters. it's weird but i love digging through people's save files, it's little digital memories.

I was kinda exaggerating, I know there are quite a few N64 games worth owning. A cursory glance at my Backloggery reveals that I got only 11 N64 games — and I didn't even get Perfect Dark until well into the GameCube era (new copy for $10 at a GameStop, hell yeah). My gaming was supplemented by the PC at the time. And I did a lot of rentals, too.

Its got Ogre Battle and some awesome Treasure games, so doesnt suck by default.

Yeah, Real talk, Sin & Punishment, Mischief Makers, Ogre Battle 64, Paper Mario, F-Zero X, and a couple other games (we're not counting games that have gotten superior ports, of course) are sweet, but the system's pretty dismal overall. It's really only interesting to talk about collecting for it when you get into the 64DD stuff... which is lame as hell, but interesting.

The N64 is, of course, the best console ever.

Hmm just at a glance Jet Force Gemini, Cruisin USA, Turok 1 and 2, Kirby Crystal Shards...

It's not Turok 1 and 2, it's Turok 2 and Turok Rage Wars. The last game is A Bug's Life (the others were identified already).

It's one of those consoles that holds up with an attractive library, but that's only because said library is small enough for anyone to observe in its entirety. I'd say it has ~20 excellent games that totally justify owning one, but I also remember the terrible release schedules back in the day. It's only now that everything's released and available that it looks interesting.

Heck, I remember when it was so starved for JRPGs that people on Gamefaqs were making a fit of how Enix was going to be the new Square with Wonder Project J2.

At the very least, the animation of her running towards the screen was very impressive.

People who say that there are only a handful of good N64 games are people who haven't played most N64 games. Either that or they dislike 5th gen 3d games in general, but if that really was the case, I don't know if people would even find 20 titles...

You guys saying the N64 sucks are all insane, I want to make a N64 Appreciation & Emulation Thread to prove you all wrong.

My current GameCube collection:

2013-05-29212913.jpg

On my list to buy:

- Mario Strikers
- Mario Superstar Baseball
- Billy Hatcher
- Zelda: Twilight Princess (I have the Wii version, but not Cube)

Any games that you think I may be missing??? Recommendations?

Cant hurt.

One thing that gets me is that Majora's Mask even with Expansion pak power is much blurrier than I remember it.

I might have just missed it in the pic but... Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. And Mega Man Network Transmission and Paper Mario 2.

please do, Seik! your threads are awesome, and if all goes well tomorrow, i'll be rejoining your ranks! wanna get back in on that library while it's still cheap.

is it now? hoping it's sharp upscaled, though i figure ill wait till the year's end just to see if we get a 3DS remake (can't be hard with the OOT work done, right?), because as it stands, everything i read says the N64 version is still the definitive take.

is network transmission anything like command mission? and i 2nd your additions there, excellent collection NR1 but you need some darker stuff too like RE0/4, Killer 7, Eternal Darkness, etc!

My review threads are better than these collection/"look at the overpriced games I bought" threads.

Nah, it's a side-scrolling platformer with the Battle Network series' chip deck system for special weapons.

Kind of an inverse of Command Mission's "make an RPG out of a platform/action series" really.
Yeah, and Network Transmission's kind of mediocre, too, just like Command Mission. It takes a CRAZY number of shots to kill enemies in NT, and the special items (battle chips) are all LIMITED-USE! It's just stupid design. The game is very difficult early on, as well. Sure, if you manage to stick with it long enough to get far into the game supposedly the game gets easier and more fun, but the difficulty and fun curves go entirely in the wrong direction, and I, surely like many people, couldn't take it for long enough to get to that point. It was a pretty disappointing game; I had higher hopes, for a Gamecube-exclusive 2.5d Mega Man game...

Haha thanks! :)

This week-end, I'll do it when I'll have some loose time, prolly saturday night. I'll make sure to make a descent banner (I swear, doing these with MSPaint takes me some time. :P) gather infos and try to make everything better and more detailed than the previous thread. That said I really need to update my Saturn thread's OP too, it's not the first time I'm saying this and I still got nothing done... all those 16:9 shots are driving me crazy nowadays...I don't know what the hell I was thinking back then.

Screw the haters, it's happening.

Well I beat the game via Wii VC, so that might be a factor. I never had the chance to play the original 64 version, and ended up finding it for cheap a few weeks back.

No, not really anything like Command Mission (outside of the fact that it's a GCN Mega Man oddity).

I never found it disappointing at the time, or a few years ago on replay. Still my memory's hazy, I might be a little off base here. But I'm thinking: you get plenty of chips to rotate through, and those should be your primary attacks against enemies with significant health (just like in the Battle Network games). As you go on you get stronger chips (like you mention), and I think you also get to upgrade your buster. As far as early difficulty... I find most MM games to be that way (due to boss weaknesses) and many action RPGs too (due to character starting off weak). I don't find it to be a problem, but rather it just makes you feel that much better once you get past it.

It's not as great as classic Mega Man or X. But I found it to be enjoyable, and definitely an interesting take on blending different sub-series.

Bloody Roar Primal Fury is loads of fun.

I was just playing that this week. It's fast and fluid, but not totally mindless or button-mashy. Surprised I never heard more about that series back then; I only knew about that one because I ended up randomly renting it once. I'd second the recommendation; though if you're picky about things like this, be aware that it's a remake of Bloody Roar 3 for PS2.
