The Nintendo Switch has become the system people love to love

I put a few hours in handheld mode on my Switch. In my opinion it is a bit too heavy and uncomfortable to play for long stretches. I was laying down mostly. While holding it like a book in front of me, supporting all the weight in my hands it caused cramps in both my wrists and hands. It feels a bit awkward in handheld mode after putting in 30+ hours docked using the Pro. For the most part, I believe that is where it will spend most of its time.

I have put most of my time into Zelda and I have to say, I am still unimpressed. The difficulty is sure the most in any Zelda. Although, it does lend itself to fun and challenging combat (sometimes). But most of the time I am just wandering around getting stomped by the enemies. I am still on one of the first quests, find the ancient ones or some shit. Its the typical Zelda go find Zora, Goron, desert people and what not. Well, every time I do I get curbed stomped by enemies. And I can't find the Shrines for shit. Even with the finder dinging like a crazy bitch, I don't have a clue as to where to find them. Then the times I do find them I can't get to them right away because I don't have the necessary equipment to get in them (flint and wood). Or when I do get in them there's a fucking octopus thing with a sword and shield and he kicks me in the balls. Everything I hit it my shit just breaks and does little damage. Which leads me to....

Every weapon I find breaks after about 6 hits. Please tell me there are weapons that don't break all the time. Please tell me there is a Master Sword/Hylian Sheild and they don't break. I mean it wouldn't be so bad if I could repair the weapons. Can I do that?

In reality, I don't know what I am supposed to be doing. I am avoiding walkthroughs on the net. I may have to follow one cause I am loosing interest.

I did get a screen protector for it. I got the Amfilm glass one. It installed nicely, but I fucked up on the first getting a piece of dust under it. I also had an air bubble I couldn't get out. A couple things I learned while installing the second one it came with. You can gently pry up the side corner or edge after pushing an air bubble toward it and it will smooth it out. I kept trying to just push it out with out doing that and it was impossible. You can also gently pry up the edge and use the stickers they give you to pull the dust out if it is close enough. Use a thin plastic pry tool to do this.

It looks good although, I messed up the adhesive on the edge because my pry tool was kinda mangled. If I used a new pry tool this wouldn't have happened. I will probably spend another 9 bux and get another pack.

That is if I decide to keep the Switch. I got caught up in the hype. Now I am in the same position I was in with the PS4 when it first came out. Just two real decent games to play and too few features on the system. I ended up selling my launch PS4 due to that. I did end up buying one again, so there is that.

I just hope Nintendo goes in a direction I can follow. Quality Nintendo games without requiring a shitty input method (motion).
It's cool that Zelda isn't for you, but it always surprises me when people who obviously have tastes that aren't in line with Nintendo's games or hardware wind up purchasing it then feel the need to explain in detail why they don't like it. Details being things that amount to reasons they shouldn't have bought it in the first place if they don't like the selling points.

Dude just called Splatoon 2 and ARMS shovelware in the other thread. Shouldn't even waste your breath responding to him.

I feel like this has been the first console launch that's been almost entirely supported by multiplatform games and ports though.

I love the hardware, and I bought BOTW again for it, but lets not pretend the launch library isn't really slim. It's made up almost entirely of multiplatform games and ports.

How many launches have you been around for? What you're saying applies to most major console releases. Consoles don't come out the gate swinging for the fences with new IPs, exclusives and little else. It's usually a few exclusives bolstered by ports and multi-plats, and the library builds over time. I mean what were you expecting, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 9, Metroid Prime 4, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Smash Bros 5, Zelda, Star Fox all in the launch window?

Do not forget every major AAA 3rd party release within that window (both Western and Japanese). Not to mention every relevant indie release within that window as well. As we all know that never happens between Sony and Microsoft platforms, s I do not know why that is expected of Nintendo.

The expectations are there, but are never specified. The range of said expectation is also infinite from left to right, and from north to south, as I believe these people do not even know what they truely want other than: "third party support/AAA." Which is vague to begin with. People may as well say western support, as people do not view Japanese 3rd party and Nintendo developed as AAA anymore. AAA=western only. It's that, or nothing nowadays.

It sounds like you're super early in Zelda. Yes, you'll find weapons that last longer than the makeshift enemy weapons you have from the tutorial area and the rusty weapons you found lying around. Look for treasure chests, raid enemy camps, etc. They respawn at the blood moons too. Expand your weapon stash with Hetsu (which you probably should've already done) if you really lack enough weapons. Bows/arrows and nailing headshots will help too. Learn to dodge/parry to preserve your shield/health. By the time you finish you'll always have high level weapons filling your inventory.

You find shrines by just looking around. Some are more hidden but you don't have to do all of them. You also don't really require much to enter a shrine unless you're terrible at inventory management. Wood is everywhere, use the bombs to chop down a tree. Flint are in the mining deposits.
You're always told the basic direction you need to go to so I'm not sure how you don't know what to do. Check your map (-) and there should be glowing yellow spots.

As for the unnecessary motion control diss, no Switch game outside of 1 2 requires motion controls. Splatoon is enhanced by them as is ARMS but you can turn it off

I would love it even more if they rendered the UI in 1080p while it was docked. That blur for the few minutes I do see the UI is taking its toll on me.

As Lingitiz already said, The guy you're responding to called Splatoon 2 and ARMS shovelware. Don't even bother.

I wonder if that's some form of limitation, like maybe it runs smoothly in 720p on docked especially if you're going back and forth. Or maybe it'll get patched in the future

Hopefully they patch it because the games switch resolutions flawlessly and what seems like effortlessly when going from handheld to docked. That's what makes me think it might not be limited.

I ended up taking a LOT of screencaps during Zelda, does anyone know if I can manage them on my mac (easier to view and bulk delete) then put the SD card back in my Switch and it won't have messed up the album browser?

Viewing them should be fine, and I suspect deleting should be as well, but I've never tried it.

Though, one thing to keep in mind is that some past Nintendo systems haven't taken kindly to the hidden files that OSX tends to spew all over the file system. You probably want to remove those just to be safe.

I'm thinking of getting a Switch today, but is concerned about it's durability when taking it outside.

I haven't had a cover on my phones for a good decade, but dropped 2 phones within the last 2 weeks that completely broke, so I'm wary.

And there's nothing I would enjoy on this one other than Puyo Puyo Tetris when I take it to my parents place. Maybe Mario Kart 8, if it's great to play splitscreen on the device itself?

Well the screen is not glass so it cant break if you drop it.

There was a video in the other thread that took 8 drops for it to completely broke and even after that they unbroke it by dropping a few more times

I'm more worried about putting it in the dock as someone who got it yesterday.

Bought a switch at the weekend and wow is the device smaller than it looks. The screen quality is a huge step above 3DS with decent viewing angles and enough resolution to render kanji properly. Account management is much better too I had no issues hooking up my main JP account and sub UK. Cant wait till some 3rd party software gets released. Makes me wish Capcom had ported XX at launch :/ 300hrs in and I find it hard going back to 3ds.

I think a good amount of the negative feedback is because a lot of people are constantly gushing over the Switch as if it already has a library to rival the Wii U's, when it is about as slim as a typical launch in reality. The whole equal and opposite reaction thing.

I'm more happy than anything to finally be able to enjoy a lot of the JP handheld games again. I absolutely despised looking at the 3DS's screen to the point that I would just stop playing after about 5 minutes no matter the game. Everything about the OS feels so much better than the Wii U and 3DS it's not even funny. It's like PS3 -> PS4 all over again on that front. The consle(undocked) is actually slightly bigger than I thought it would be.

Yeah, Switch is my favorite console since the Dreamcast.

Nice to finally have a must own piece of hardware this gen.

Strong words... but I am sort of seeing the same thing myself.

It's hard to place it on that throne until we get more timeless games like the dreamcast had.

None of my friends are remotely interested in games so this shocked.

This system is gonna be huge

If that person even bought the game and system (I am little skeptical on that since all of his criticisms are pretty by the numbers) he bought it just to shit on the console.

Would not be the first time. Console wars can make people do really pathetic shit.

Sad reality of the never ending war. There are still threads quite often about how the PS4/XB1 are completely pointless to own, etc. That said, people shouldn't be targeted just because they have a differing opinion.

TBF if we want to really talk about it, all videogames could be called pointless to own. I mean you can make an argument against most entertainment media being worthless in the grand scheme. Fortunately more and more devs are pushing the medium in new and different ways.

Sorry to get off track, bc I mainly agree that console war shit is dumb and ruins most constructive conversations about games and gaming.

Finally, last night really brought home the love for the switch. We had enjoyed and got our monies worth with 1-2 switch, but yesterday we broke down and bought Mk8 Deluxe, mainly after seeing and reading about how even the littlest of kiddos can play along.

So now our 4yo can play with his older brother and Mom and Dad. We were rocking 4 player MK and they were having so much fun. It was great. Sadly, it also hammered home the poor design of the left joycon and the two left joycons we have constantly caused issues while playing. So I called up Nintendo and they're going out today. Stinks but at least its covered and they're fixing them.

Personally I think the love in for Switch is only going to get better this year. What I worry about is that old bad Nintendo creeps up and fucks up a good thing like they did with Wii, where I felt very few compelling reasons to play that thing after like 2009. They really really need to be 100% in on the Nintendo games platform and moving forward, even slowly, to have some more features and to keep bring more games. I want more DS/3DS Nintendo and less Wii/Wiiu Nintendo.

It's one thing to have an opinion. I will listen to anyone's opinion and I will respect any opinion that has something interesting to say (not so much for the people who just regurgitate what they read or saw on YT that makes up for a lot of posts and hot takes on the internet). But having an agenda is another thing. And when your agenda is something as childish as console wars I can't respect that because it is so pathetic.

If your favorite console is the OUYA I can respect that because it is true for you. And if you explain why you love it in an interesting or entertaining manner I just became a fan. But if your goal is to just rip down a console you don't like because it has the wrong logo on it, you got some problems...

I think it will happen when they drop 3DS support. I just hope 3rd parties *cough*Capcpom*cough* don't hang back and keep releasing on 3DS only forever just because they can keep reusing 5+ year old assets/textures.

I definitely agree with you, but I also think "overhype" can be damaging in a way on a social forum. There are plenty of legitimate topics where criticism gets completely shut down by a swarm of posters(check nearly any thread that has the slightest criticism of a Souls game, post-E3 BotW threads, pre-release No Man's Sky threads), and it feels like some of those retaliate by getting their shots in where they can. It's juvenile as all hell, but there is a certain amount that stems from not being able to legitimately discuss an unpopular opinion about a given topic. Word of mouth is one of the biggest marketing tools and I wouldn't be surprised if there were a good amount of people burned on Vita and Wii U purchases due to the gushing of people here.

Thing is, NO ONE is immune to brand loyalty. Not that everyone is a fanboy, but games are great drawn out experiences that we invest in. It's no wonder that people get emotionally attached.

Honestly if you're saying "I respect differing opinions, but not people who blindly love a console" then firstly you need to understand that everyone's opinion is influenced by Brand loyalty, so you should be disregarding everyone's opinion. Also how do you judge when someone is sufficiently influenced by Brand loyalty to disregard their opinion? Secondly take a look at yourself. I don't mean that in an offensive way. Next time you write a post about say, Nintendo, try and dissect why you're saying what you're saying. Brand love/loyalty will be a part of that. It's inevitable.

Great post, and point that I try to make myself often. Literally everyone is biased in some regard, and those biases cloud judgement from time to time. They also make it seem like someone who doesn't have the same bias is attacking something that you are emotionally invested in, leading to a desire to defend and counter attack in some people. It's natural. Look at sports fans, people with different hobbies. It comes down to the same root of emotional investment.

I am all for the positive. If you love EA games (or insert whatever brand you want) and want to talk about them and praise their sports games go for it. That is what message boards are for.

I am against the negativity that comes from console wars. Where it bothers you that someone else is enjoying something. There is something wrong about to me. Like the way some Nintendo fans got pissed that Horizon got such good scores or the way some people who hate Nintendo got mad that Zelda got a warm reception. This has always happened and will always happen, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

Negative isn't necessarily always due to console/platform wars. There is quite a bit of it that stems from such, and you start to recognize the names after a while. Heck I can name a couple dozen hardcore Sony/Nintendo/PC supporters on this forum off the top of my head but it doesn't do any good to automatically assume too much. An agenda and genuine disappointment can look similar at times.

Intent is hard to prove.

Luckily the people who are shitty are not subtle about it and you can figure it out after a few months.

True. I don't really use ignore because I always have a feeling that some day one of those garbage posters is going to have some grand insight that makes it all worth it. It will just take 3000 shit posts to get there.

It's so weird (but great) to see how different Switch is from Wii U in every aspect, hype being one of them. It's telling that Switch is something even a person like me who hasn't owned a Nintendo console since N64 is considering buying. Seems like it has struck the perfect balance between mobile gaming and triple-AAA production value games. And the better Nintendo is doing the better the market place is for the consumer.
