The Nintendo Switch has become the system people love to love

Pretty much it's the vita part 2. I think some of it would be inherent though as it's by far the most powerful portable and has reasonable hardware. People that like playing portably would express those desires much like with the vita.

Now we just need to hope publishers pay attention. Having people in the media championing the system is a good thing there.

Watching IGN and KFG recently and everyone is port begging for Persona 5 lol

I wonder if the surprise twist for the Switch is that it represents what portable gaming was actually evolving towards for some time.

Smartphones have taken over for bite-size microgames, meant to be poked at for a few minutes during a commute. Meanwhile the DS and 3DS were increasingly powerful and capable of hosting full console style games. People also used them differently than the traditional image of the portable; they were like micro-consoles used for longer play sessions around the home or somewhere else.

Perhaps that is the secret with the Switch. There was a hidden demand for a device like this, upon reexamining the way in which the previous generation of dedicated portables was really being used by players.

I think the Switch works well with our current culture and expectations of tech. Switch can be played whenever, wherever with whoever. The system adapts to the person using it.

I don't need much more than two months of regular usage to conclude that this is Nintendo's best hardware in many years.

Good for you, but don't speak for a crowd.

What does that even mean? People should enjoy the Switch less because the WiiU sucked? People shouldn't talk about their Switch because the WiiU sucked? Does enthusiasm upset you for some reason?

I don't give a shit about who enjoys what.
But if you say people have hated nintendo hardware for a decade then i sure as shit won't rely on 2 months of statistics to say theyve reversed their fortunes. Lets wait for the honeymoon period to get over

Is the Switch worth it if you don't really have anyone to play with?

Been wondering if I should go with a Switch or a new PC this summer.

I've got a 1070 in my 3570k PC at the moment. If I had the funds for a bit of gaming technology, I would absolutely take a Switch over any upgrade. Offers a significant amount different to the PC (or home consoles) to make it viable. I would even get my multiplatform titles on it tbh.

Depends on what you've got in your PC though!

Edit:

I'd be completely behind Sony/MS doing something bold and abandoning the power race to move solely to a hybrid form factor.

You can't deny some love to a portable console.
We grow up with them, carry them on trip used them on waiting line / boring events, and lose sleep time playing them on bed.

Anyway yes, i really feel that switch is getting love from people that was not even considering to buy a nintendo console

For all the early talk of people wanting Nintendo to make a version that eliminates the joycons, you can now see how essential and integral they are to the system and it's versatility. Nintendo was absolutely right to make them as they did and not permanently attached. It completely opens it up to console on the go.

To the people who are saying they don't need the portability or versatility, it's not something you really realize until you actually get your hands on it. You're going to be playing Zelda or Mario Kart going, "damn I need to take a dump" and then have that light bulb moment where you realize you can just take it with you.
I mean, that's what a phone is for.

If I'm taking a dump, or sitting in an office waiting for an appointment, I have NeoGAF, Reddit, emails, text messages, LINE, Twitter, and so on to entertain me. Hell, even other games like Fire Emblem Heroes or Crypt of the Necrodancer. A dedicated handheld gaming device doesn't fit my life, and I'm sure it's true for millions of other people. I don't need to game all the time and spend hundreds of dollars on a device when I already have one that provides entertainment in those situations.

That said, the Switch has definitely taken off a lot more than I expected. Solid hardware + an incredible game really can make a big splash.

Well I was kinda smashed this past weekend with the gf and we started wishing we had a Switch to play Mario Kart with some friends at a party.
Shame Nintendo can't get a grip on having enough Switches on shelves or online stores (UK here).

I'm not sure if I'll have this burning desire to get a Switch in like 6 months when they finally have stock or whatever.
Sort it out Nintendo!

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
IMO this line is spot on and bodes very well for the console going forward.

Usually consoles sell because of games, not because they offer such an enjoyable, unique experience that using the system itself becomes a selling point. Nintendo has moved in the other direction; the games are going to sell because of the hardware.

Yup. I feel like I'm in a Nintendo commercial when I'm chilling in bed with the wife and I toss her a joycon and we play Snipperclips or MK. It's ridiculously fast and easy to get a local multiplayer game going.

Varies place by place. I know a local store that still has some new units for sale (though not sure if they'd have a slightly bumped up price); otherwise it's just pure luck as to whether or not franchises like GAME will have them in stock right now. Online, no, they're pre-ordering for when they get the next batch.
Thanks for the response.

Im probably not gonna get it right away anyway as im still torn about getting one right now due to only wanting Zelda and after getting PS4Pro and PSVR at the end of last year it feels wrong to get another console but that new console itch comes back every now and then.

Think i might wait until E3 to get a better picture of what upcoming games Nintendo will have and then hopefully stock will be a little better too.

A decade? WiiU hasn't been out that long. Anyway, once the honeymoon period is over will your head completely explode? You seem upset.

But the hardware is here, it has appeal and is liked by pretty much everyone who has actually played it. So we can conclude that "I like their games but the hardware sucks" won't be as present as it was the last decade.

Based on enthusiastic early adopters who didnt even wait for the console to be fullt market tested and get a decently large library of games.

Again, all these posts just mean individuals like it. And im happy for them. But lets wait for a more collective opinion that isnt potentially jaded by a honeymoon phase on hardcore gaming community.
Yes it sold well, as would be expected from the successor to nintendo's portable and home console.

When is it okay to say people like the Switch? Fall of 2018?

I'll say this about the Switch: it's not a hunk of junk. It feels good to use and is both unique and familiar in that it's multi-function hardware with many novel ideas, but still has the simplicity of using a tablet. It's easy to use and gives the owner a great sense of freedom on how they want to play. The Pro Controller is also fantastic, so it excels as a home console. I can only imagine that Switch revisions down the line will make the hardware even better and more appealing (bigger joycon buttons please).

It might just be "shiny new toy" syndrome, but it's simply a cool thing to use and show off.

The switch is the vita 2.

The second I heard some say "love my switch". It was completely confirmed.

Nintendo-Switch-tabletop-mode.jpg

This wouldn't have been part of a Vita 2. But yeah, the love is noticeable

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Not really - the main point is the fact that it can hooked up to the TV at any point and that it enables local coop on the go better than previous systems. Just dropping a more powerful GBA/PSP/Vita wouldnt have the same effect.

Switch evolved from the limitations of previous portables and offer stuff that can be appreciated even for customers that own other consoles, handhelds or smartphones.

I was incredibly hyped to learn more about NX and shit a brick when I saw that initial trailer. After the god awful reveal I decided early the next morning I didn't want one only to decide a few hours later I acctually wanted one. I ordered one from Target and it was slated to come a week late. I ended up standing alone in the freezing cold for 3 hours outside of best buy with a blanket wrapped around me to get one only to have my target package arrive on release date. Zelda is one of the best games I've ever played and portable mario kart has been game-changing. It's been a fucking wild ride with this system 😂😂😂.

Expected?

Many here thought it was going to bomb at the price reveal.

These analysts lite prognostications keep moving lol.

Haha, come on... just individuals like it!

Anyway...

One thing I love about the Switch how easy it is to pick up and play on this thing. Loading is fast, the OS is super snappy and sleepmode works perfectly. And you dont even need a TV to play on it!

It has never been easier to play great Nintendo games.

That's a fair way of going about it, and I don't think anyone would say use their Switch during those situations every single time, but there is imo inherently more appeal to playing a grand prix in MK8D than scrolling through Neogaf when I am waiting for water to boil when I'm cooking for example. It makes those small moments where you wait more fun, and imo the Switch provides that fun better than any other device, due to the software available.

I like that first quote from the Polygon article, when I first saw those scenes in the Switch reveal trailer I thought it looked cute but impractical. Fast forward to, after taking my Switch out with me a handful of times to social gatherings, and I've personal recreated this scenario many times.

Me too
Even on the airplanes lol

This is so true. Played a bunch of rounds of MK at work last week. It's so nice for people to be able to ask "what's that?" and then being able to say "hey you want to play?"

It wouldn't have as much much of an effect but it would still have an effect. The switch is a portable local multiplayer device that's power. The 3DS isn't dead. People still do fundamentally like portables. If you were to compare this to how it would do if it was purely a home console to a portable, it's like not even a competition.

My girlfriend has a 4670K with a 1060 and she wants The Witcher 3 on her Switch, Nintendo definetely hit something here.

I love the damn thing and I can't wait till there's even more games to play on it. Feels like handheld gaming has evolved from the underpowered cousin. The Switch is a ubiqioitous experience.

I'll echo the Persona 5 comments. Every time I need to sit in front of my TV and play it I groan and just wish I could take it anywhere. Probably would be twice as far by now too. Not sure if they have some sort of exclusive thing with Sony (and SMT for Nintendo?) but would love to rebuy this game and play it again later if it came to Switch.

But my hour counts are getting crazy with this thing. 150h in Zelda, 150h in Isaac. Well worth it to be an early adopter and I cannot wait for the rest of this years games.

I get the feeling people want to try to sell the Switch as the new Wii where everybody is wanting one.

I believe the truth is the opposite. I personly love to play games, even collect them but Im just emberassed to play them in public places (train, metro etc).
Why do you care if people know you play games?

I do love mine, but I'm not sure it's speaking to many folk outside of the mainstream gamer circle yet. This is anecdotal from people who obviously have a circle of gamers, and even many people who post on forums, have a circle of gamers.

I don't see this becoming as big as Wii.

How much of that is you, though? I've played it in public plenty without getting any strange looks.

My girlfriend is not a gamer, at all. She barely plays mobile games. She spent at least 3 hours this weekend playing Mario Kart 8. She learned how to drift, she played time trials against her own ghost to improve her times, and now she wants a Switch.

She wants to buy a game console after playing it for 3 hours. Nintendo is just magical.

This may very well be true now, but it won't be by the holidays.

I'm glad the Switch is becoming a success. Well deserved. Seems like a nice piece of tech that I'm eager to get my hands on in the near future.

Damn you, backlog :p

As someone with ever dwindling free time, the Switch has been a game changer for me. The ability to well, switch seamlessly from console to handheld mode is amazing and just really jives with where my life is at presently

Yeah the switch is very very different to a 3DS. You brought that out and you stuck out like a saw thumb university aged. Wasn't until last yeah did I see people older than 20 out and about with that were clearly the less socially inclined and I thin that had a lot to do with pokemon go.
