A Kiev 88 from 83. The soviet replica of Hasselblad. The full frame (6x6cm) visor is gorgous (even if reversed) and the scope for manuel focus is the most precise thing I've ever seen... It has a film to be developped before... october 89 with it :lol

The antithesis to small DSLRs, as far as the viewfinder. That's one reason I want a Hasselblad 500c, for that gorgeous waist level viewfinder.

The Sony EVIL (I know its not an EVIL without the viewfinder, but I like to call it anyway) is a really early prototype. There is not even mount design. They just put up a small brick with some cylindrical things with glasses on both ends. This is as early an announcement as Samsung from last year, when they didn't even bother to put up a brick, just announced it in an interview.

IMO, there is only one explanation Sony announces the platform so early, they know someone else is make EVIL cameras. Since Canon stands to loss more market in the premium point-and-shoot arena, the only logical brand would be Nikon. I hope its really 2.5X like the rumor say.

The EVIL (I like it too :D ) will be available this year according to Sony. So while the mock up indeed looks early the development is far along.

Sony Europe has put up a teaser video for the new cameras. The design seems final (perhaps minor adjustments).

I'm considering upgrading my Spyder2 to a Spyder3express. I don't know why, seeing as I'm not particularly happy with my Spyder2 (it did cost me close to $300), but the Spyder3 is actually pretty inexpensive.

There's a quote about Zeiss possibly making lenses for the EVIL cameras. A nice 50mm equivalent Macro lens would own my life.

$300?? Is that NZ dollars? I bought my Spyder2 for $100 or so. Did you buy the Spyder2 Pro?

Yes. Sony recently extended the partnership with Ziess and Sony has said Ziess will support both the regular Alpha-line and the new compact cameras. I hope they have à few of those ready for launch day. :)

YEah, it was NZ dollars, which is still something like US $250 or something. I couldn't help it - it was such a specialised piece of hardware, electronics are expensive in NZ, and they didn't have anything except that package (it's the Spyder2, which is not pro, probably closer to the Express).

It has been one of my most expensive, yet most unwanted, but needed piece of gear.

I'm not even that happy with it, since it leaves an ever slight pink tinge to my greys. It was out of date even when I bought it in 2008. I tried the demo with the ColorEyes software, and together they do make great profiles, but I'm not forking out another $175 (especially since the color profiles are ICC v4.0 and for some reason don't work well with QuickTime X screen recording).

Now I've been told by the Spyder2 people that it's not meant for LED screens (I have an early 2008 MBP, pre-unibody, but is still LED backlit), or wider gamut screens. Maybe that is what is causing the pink. SO I want to upgrade - I don't want to spend a lot, so I'm looking at the Spyder3Express. Not to mention SPyder 2 software is still PPC binary.

I understand you can't profile more than one monitor, but I'm hoping that I can do the little trick where you just make the screens your main screen, calibrate and save the profile and switch back.

I don't know why I'm still going to go with SPyder, but the express is relatively inexpensive. If you have any input to add, that would be most appreciated.

Rumor is the Canon 1Ds Mark IV will be announced tomorrow.

Canonrumors, which rates rumors based on a 1, 2, or 3 (1 being a new source, 3 being a past source which is right 95% of the time), has a CR3 tip that the 1Ds IV is being tested at the Olympics and will be announced before the end of February.

They have a CR2 that says it will be 32MP.

I'm curious about the 24-70 f/2.8 IS L. It would be like the dream lens if it is high quality.

They say that this is definitely coming, take it to the bank.

does Ziess even make the lens? Like Lecia they don't make the lens for panasonic they just certify that they were made under same Lecia specifications.

I believe the relationship is Zeiss and Sony cook up a design (probably Sony inputting design limitations to reach a desired price point) and its physically manufactured by Sony. One shouldn't question the integrity of the lens though, I mean, Cosina (a Japanese company) has been manufacturing Zeiss lenses in Japan since the 80's (and some of those Contax lenses are legendary).

I think Zeiss designs but Sony manufactures the lens. A Zeiss person inspects the lens and signs a seal of approval for it, thats what I got in my box anyway (A little note with the inspectors signature and the serial number stamped on). :)

Nikkor 13mm on eBay. These don't show up very often.

Wow. That is pretty freakin' crazy that one is on eBay. I read that when you bought them in Japan you met the workers at the plant and they had a frikkin' Shinto priest bless each and every one of them.

Sigma just announced five new (and upgraded) lenses at PMA:

8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM (New)
17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM (Added optical stabilization and 1mm wider)
50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM (Added optical stabilization)
70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM (Added optical stabilization)
85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM (New)

Prices don't seem to have been announced yet, but I may well be tempted by the 17-50mm F2.8 OS if it's sufficiently cheaper than Canon's 17-55mm F2.8 IS and is at least reasonably sharp.
Oh man, Sigma is known for their bokeh in their high end primes. I expect great things from that 85.

I am pretty excited by the Sony "EVIL", it represents the most compact body with the largest sensor possible. And I can use all my Pentax and Nikon MF lenses on it. The only down side is the weird ass Sony hotshoe that requires an adapter. Hopefully it come out sooner so the Chinese can start making third party lens adapters on it. :lol

The coolest thing about the EP-2, all of the micro 4:3rds cameras for that matter, is the short distance between the lens flange and the sensor. You can, with the right adapter ring, put just about any lens you can think of on these cameras. There's a growing cult of Leica enthusiasts who are putting M series lenses on their camera and shooting amazing stuff.

On Lomography: Looks like Photojojo has made a Canon and Nikon DSLR adapter for the Diana Lens, and sell them for $60 as a kit. With that and a little bit of editing I bet you could get pretty darn close to actual Lomography.

Heck, I might even get one of those in the future, might be fun!

Apparently the new Sony mount for the compact/EVIL should be able to handle full frame sensors *drool*

like this?

If the only issue is the distance from the lens to the sensor it should work with the Sony as well, the distance is much shorter compared to the regular Alpha.

seems like Sigma is gonna jump into the compact, large sensor, interchangeable lens sector also.

No word whether it will be a Micro 4/3 but they are gonna make lenses for M 4/3 so I would assume their new compact camera would use a 4/3 mount.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of a smaller body, as the lenses still have to be large enough to cover the full sensor. This is one of the biggest benefits of m4/3rds the lenses dont have to be as large sense the sensor is smaller.

Look at the Leica cameras that are 35mm, there are plenty of smaller lenses avalible for them. So I dont think that will be a problem.

If they eventually release a FF version they will have to have both types of lenses, like they do now. Sony offers APS only lenses (DT lenses) as well as those which are for both.

Not true, look up the Contax G2 system. The m4/3 lenses are small is largely a theoretical argument since Olympus doesn't like to make pancakes.

Sigma doesn't want to be left out. That makes Canon Nikon and Pentax the 3 major brands that still haven't committed to mirror-less. If I have to predict, I would say Nikon is announcing their version of EVIL by Photokina. Canon probably will do it next year. Canon has high end P&S like the G11 and the s90. They can afford to wait for their turn.

Pentax probably won't do it if they are still serious about making a FF body.

They may run into a problem though if in the sony cameras the lenses are designed with the sensor further away. This is the reason why you have to use an adapter ring for 4/3rd lenses on m4/3rds. The flange is closer on m4/3rds than it is on 4/3rds.
So that would be 4 types of lenses.

tino said:

its not theoretical since smaller image circle = less glass. The Olympus 50-200 f2.8 is lighter than pretty much all of the competitors equivalents.
m4/3rds should expand on this since the front element on 4/3rds has to be larger because the rear element is further away from the sensor. This isnt the case with m4/3rds though.
the m4/3rds 14-42 has a front filter size of 40mm and weighs 150g whereas the 4/3rds 14-42 has a front filter of 52mm and weighs 190g.

I think you guys are missing the entire point of smaller bodies and smaller lenses. But that's just my opinion.

They are designing these cameras to be companions to bigger ones for people like us and to be better than point and shoots for average joes.
The prices just need to come down.

Anyone have a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0025EWXEU/?tag=neogaf0e-20

The people on Fred Miranda rave about this lens, saying it rivals the Canon 85mm L. Only $250! Probably my next lens.

Apparently they are also making a 35mm 1.2 for Canon mount. That sounds sexy as hell.

Forsete has it. The main allure of the Rokinon is the lack of Color Fringing (that plagues the 85L II at larger apertures). It also has a very nice bokeh rendition. Definitely not too shabby for a $250 lens. Its supposed to be very good for closeup but not on the same level when at Infinity though.

I think I finally settled on getting the Nikon D5000 this week as my first DSLR, and was wondering if this was a good deal?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00281678I/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I was between that and the Pentax-Kx bundle, but decided on Nikon because I hear of greater lens availability, which I'd like to start building a collection of eventually.

I'd be using it as practice, and for classes and designs.

Also, should I bother with a warranty? I'm unfamiliar with warranties on Amazon, and in general mostly.

Anything else I should know?

That's a pretty good deal. The body + kit lens + spare battery alone usually would cost around $720.

Just a reminder - autofocus is only enabled for newer "AF-S" lenses that have the AF motor built into the lens.

my 70-200 f/2.8L showed up 2 days early!!

(heavy rain showed up in the mail today also, seen on the tv...)

i live in orlando (in case anyone wanted to try to steal it from me...), i have a friend who occasionally works at universal studios (and also just purchased a 7D). he has some friends that do special effects makeup and all that fun stuff... one of them enjoys writing, came up with a horror script. we're going to shoot it friday night. they built a lot of the props already, furniture made from body parts and shit, it actually looks pretty good.

i haven't made a short film or music video in a couple years, it should be fun to get back into it. i'm actually really excited.

I have the one with Samyang branding, and yes its really really great at 1.4. Sharp with little vignetting (even on FF). You'll have a hard time getting the focus right though, at 1.4 its only a few centimeters (depending on distance) and you have to do this manually. You get better with time though and you "train" your eyes (at least me, not really used to manual lenses :p ). The bokeh looks ace as well.

Only negatives with my Samyang are:
-The focus ring is a little stiff, but I read it loosens up over time.
-Lenshood is very flimsy

Just a heads up. The Canon T2i just started shipping. This will be one busy weekend on videography forums.

PMA is over right? So there shouldn't be any new announcements any time soon.

If so I'm pretty interested in a T2i pending reviews and its ISO performance.

Dammit GAF, this thread is going to end up sending me bankrupt :lol :lol

Have recently just jumped into the DSLR world, picked up a Canon 500D/T1i and it's mighty impressive.

Have got the kit 18-55 IS lens, am interested in picking up a dedicated wide angle lens for landscape shots. Any recommendations? Still learning so budget would probably be somewhere around £200 max.

Thanks GAF :D

Yea the new T2i looks pretty great.

I have the T1i for sale now because I want to upgrade. I really need the video options as well as the mic input.

If anyone wants to buy the Japanese Kiss X3 (T1i lens kit) from me. Let me know. Its exactly the same as the T1i, full english and everything.

I have the Lumix GF-1 and love it. When I don't want to carry around my heavy camera this thing gets the job done just as well.

Go get the 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens and since you're in Japan also the 7-14mm f/4.0 (affordable there). No wait, buy two 7-14mm and send me one :D

Some guy got his hands on a pre-production model Canon T2i (550D) and shot a movie with it.

http://ninofilm.net/blog/2010/02/23/canon-550d-review/

Looks pretty nice, the night scenes are filmed at 1600 ISO, seems like it will have similar high ISO performance like the 7D. Damn I'm getting pretty interested.

Is the kit lens worth having btw? I can see myself getting something better in the long run or get it with the kit lens and then sell it off.

Just got my 14-24 f2.8 Nikkor the other day, now I'm full frame compliant... except for the body of course:lol

All I need to do now is upgrade to the 70-200 VRII and find my currently misplaced 105 f2.8 macro and I'm all set!

God DAMN! I can say, from experience sadly, that video quality is MUCH better than the 500/T1i's. Can't really see any Jello effect, which the older model suffers a little. Also, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but the 500/T1i's video aliases and shimmers a lot. Even at 720p. So mad I didn't wait a couple of months. Anyone interested in a used T1i? :p It's literally taken less than 100 shots.

As for the kit lens, unless you've already got a comparable lens, go for it. If it's the same lens as in the T1i's kit, it's pretty decent for just ~$100.

Edit: Yeah, it's the same lens, but it looks like it's adding a $200 premium onto the kit. Here it is separately, for about $150.

Edit 2: I was right the first time, it's only $100 more. Totally worth it.

In my early impressions it's clear that the UI was designed for a novice like me. The "live guide" features allow you to adjust the settings using plain English terms. There are also helpful tips for framing shots and other beginning photography lessons directly on the camera. Of course, this can all be avoided, but I think it's great.
