The official Civilization IV thread

Looks like there was some kind of shiping hic-cup, and stores won't be getting it 'till tomorrow - everyone on the civ msg boards (civfanatics.com, apolyton.net) are freaking out.

Yeah, civfanatics has like 1,000 people currently bogging down the forum. People want their crack!

Curse you, Gaming-Age Forums! Yeah, now I find out it isn't in until tomorrow.

Oh well. At least my copy is paid for. :D Put my $5 down on Oblivion too while I was at it.

Nathan

The end is coming.... the end is coming. Between Civilization IV and Call of Duty 2, life as I know it will cease to exist. My dog will likely starve to death! Damn you Sid! DAMN YOU!

The thread is dying because no one has the damn game and your bumping the thread only reminds us of this.

And there I went and bumped it. YOU SEE WHAT YOU DID? WE ARE ALL IN PAIN

WE MUST ALL SUFFER TOGETHER!
We all know we are Civ crack addicts!, we need to keep together and keep strong until our next fix.

:lol I was reading my fortune today and it said there would be good news tonight. I guess this is it! I was very sad that I wouldn't be able to play Civ 4 until tomorrow, now, most people will have to wait, just like me!

There is a god!

So it was YOU!

I participated in an IRC chat session with Soren Johnson and a couple of other Firaxis developers tonight. I asked them if they were considering an online stat tracking system for Civ IV multiplayer and they said "anything can happen."

If they were to implement a system like that for competitive multiplayer games I don't think I'd ever stop playing the game.

Some new reviews:

PC Gamer: 9.2/10
1up.com: 9/10
Yahoo! Games: 4.5/5

And interstingly enough, the first person to get the game lives in... Switzerland? Pretty stange considering we (the US) were supposed to get the game yesterday, and Europe wasn't supposed to get it 'till next week.

I didn't even know there was an ebgames here.

Woot! Nice scores. I'm on my way to get my copy now.

Going on 2 hours now and I can't get the game to run. Failed to initalize render/check your graphics settings error. First time in years I've had a problem running a PC game.

AMD 1.4ghz, 512 ram, Radeon 9550. I've tried Cataylst 5.7 - 5.10 with no luck.

Edit: Apparently a lot of ATI users are having problems getting the game to run.

2 more hours until ebgames gets this.

I have the entire day off! This will consume me!

I have to set my alarm to make sure I go to bed because I lose track of time. Like I mean seriousely. I will look at my clock and it will say 5pm. Then what seems like an hour has passed by, I look at my clock and it says 3am.

Seriousely, this game, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Suikoden II all do this to me.

Looks like we're gonna have to wait for a patch. It's not a driver issue. Almost everyone with ATI cards are unable to run the game. One guy on the civfanatics boards was able to get his x800 machine at work to run the game, but his home machine with the same card won't run it.

Bleh! Atleast the soundtrack is good so far. :(

Firaxis has truly awful quality control, it seems. :-|

Luckily I don't have an ATI card. :D

I'm hyped for this game and im not sure i'll like it, the only strategy game ive played was Caesar 3.

But i looooooveeed it!

Civ games blow away Caesar, though they're less focused on micromanagement...

Look on the bright side guys, you can still enjoy the Soundtrack until Fraxis gets a fix out for you silly ATI users.
Good thing the Soundtrack is really good! ;)

Holy Crap! How did this game make it through QA/QC... let's list the problems so far:

1. Many people with ATI cards, regardless of version or drivers, are unable to play the game due to a "renderer error". Take-Two is "looking into it".

2. Many of those who got the preorder edition are reporting that their tech tree map is in French. Take-Two will post a resolution to this on their site - sometime.

3. Many are reporting that the disc labels are swapped for the Install and Play discs.

I'm hesitant to even open my copy now - might just do a return...

Seriously - how does crap like this make it out the door?

It was obviously rushed when the release date was pushed up 2 weeks so Civ IV earnings would make this quarters report for 2k games. I'm in the process of asking EB if I can return the game. Pretty pissed off at the moment.

Maybe I am glad that they had this "shipping" problem for everybody but preorders...

I just got done installing it and it runs fine on my Radeon 9800(non pro) for what its worth to those on the fence. Now to lose the nex 12 hours of my life :(

You're one of the extremely lucky. :) Apolyton, Civfanatics, and Gamefaqs are full of pissed people who can't play.

Well, it works fine on my 9800 Pro. Me-thinks the problem must lie elsewhere (i.e. not with the video card).

Wow, wow, wow... This is a great game. I haven't had a chance to delve into it (there are many, many minor changes everywhere), but it's clearly a quality production. The graphics are beautiful and the sound is astounding. I don't know that I'll ever be able to blaze around in Civ IV like I can in Civ II, but right now I don't care.

The game itself seems more userfriendly than ever which might actually put off some Civ fans. For example, the game now shows you how many turns it will take to research a new Tech when you select it. Another example is that it displays in the corner the Civ score of every Civ you've discovered by default. I have to turn that off if I can, since I've always tried to stay in the dark on Civ scores until I saw the graph at the end of the game (or play session if I felt like rewarding myself.).

That's not to say I'm complaining. This has some of the feel of the Pirates! update, but it doesn't feel dumbed down at all. Civ fans can rest easy. I hope everyone else works out the technical issues, because this is clearly one of the best, if not the best, GOTY.

I agree, it doesn't seem any less deep - just more fun.

Firaxis dropped stuff and added stuff to keep the relatively complex game mechanics more or less in-line. They certainly have enough sense not to follow the myopic logic of bigger is better that so many here on GAF seems fixated over.

With games like Civ, there's always the danger of overreaching and making a game too complex for even a strategy gamer to understand. See Master of Orion III.

Rather than add the pile of features in CivIII, Firaxis dropped a lot of items, 20 turn deals are out, pollution is out, but in turn, they added new stuff like more resources and health in place of pollution. Overall, Soren's target of 30% new stuff and 60-70% old stuff is pretty accurate.

The game feels like Civ III, but not entirely like CiviIII because it is a new game. It's not a rehash of the same engine with basically the same features.

It's a good balance overall.

I like 1 and 2, but 3 hooked me the most. I think the game has gradually evolved from a hands off slightly obtuse strategy game to a more hands on, detail oriented strategy game.

Civ III certainly wasn't as simple as 1 or 2, but it also had better AI. In fact, all the undocumented CivIII 'features' and AI quirks took years to unravel. Its a bit crazy for a game to have that much going on.

Civ3 seemed more like a Civ2 remake to me, a step backwards after all the new stuff Alpha Cenauri brought to the series - But that's not to say I didn't enjoy the hell out of Civ3, it's just, this feels like a proper sequal.

Alpha Centarui was a tease since half the game features were put in for the human player's benefit only and the AI had no clue to even begin using them.

During Civ 3's development, Almost all of Civ3's dev team left for BigHugeGames along with Brian Reynolds due to an apparent disagreement between Sid and Brian over how Civ3 should go. Brian wanted to turn Civ into an RTS, which became Rise of Nations. Soren Johnson was brought in as the AI programmer. Soren became instrumental in designing Civ III so that almost every feature you see can be used by the AI.

I like that. One of the things he changed was to make the AI play against everyone equally including against other AI players. In Civ2, everyone will declare war on the human player once it gets too powerful, in CivI there are pre-determined world war dates. CivIII threw all that out for a more dynamic AI that treats everyone equally.

It sounds like a glowing review of Civ3's AI from me, but it has some flaws as well, that said, its much better than the previous two games. It's the first Civ game to give me a good feeling of being an equal, rather than fighting against a monolithic AI gang
