indeed, it feels much better, and areas have a level cap, so you can in theory be uber for them even if youve just gotten there (like they set the area to scale between no lower than level 5 but no higher than level 10, so if you hit it at 15, you roll them.

plus the raiders getting better weapons etc, makes more sense in this world as they would just loot what they find, it fits the lore imo better. But the raiders stay raiders, they dont transmute into other things.

I still see molerats, dogs, and bloatflys at upper levels, just less of them and yao guai and deathclaws are more frequent, plus once your visit an area, itll stay that "level" it set itself to the first time you got there, it doesnt keep leveling so springvale if visited at level 1 will still have that ranges level enemies IF you went back at level 20. But if you went there at 20 and they could range from 1 to 10, they will all be 10.

oblivion was more player level = enemies/items/loots/treasure level, which made the world boring, in fallout 3 you can go back and whup on lower level stuff (feeling supreme), take a wrong turn and get OWNED (making you want to come back later and explore), and it has a few hand placed items you can get if your crafty (like morrowind).

if elder scrolls 5 uses this system, it will be AWESOME. and I wont need FCOM and months/years of waiting for people to change it.

I agree. Bethesda found a nice "leveling" balance in this game. Elder Scrolls 5 will own if it uses this system. Totally agreed there.

ive noticed that fwe balances the xp pretty well, at the point im at now im level 12, same spot using vanilla fallout 3 i was like 18.. id actually have to grind if I wanna hit the cap I think.

Just a quick question, possibly already asked and answered, but too difficult to find in this huge a thread:

As I'm starting out a new game, where's a safe place to dump all my loot that's pretty close to the Vault 101 entrance? I'm planning to play an evil character this time, so
Megaton is a very bad choice once I blow it up.
However, I don't know how long it will take me to get to Tenpenny Tower, so I need a makeshift base of operations to dump all my stuff since I also plan to massacre everyone in Megaton and take all their stuff.

Also, would you say the Fallout Classics collection for $15 from GOG is a decent deal?

The inside of springvale elementary is what I used when I first started the game. After a few days the dudes on the outside respawn, but that's no biggie. I forgot which locker I used, but as long as you use an actual locker and not a metal box/ammo box you should be alright.

I think that the original Fallouts (especially the first) are must have games for any fan of CRPGs. If you can get past the bad graphics by todays standards, go for it.

Also, in FO1 don't let the rats in the beginning discourage you(first time I played the game I totally dismissed it because of the annoying intro part). The game is a masterpiece.

The Nuka Cola machine outside the Super Mart should be your best choice. Easily accessible and Nuka Cola Machines (unlike lockers and cupboards) don't respawn their stuff so it should be a safe choice.

There is a destroyed house and a safe you can use to store stuff also near by.

Yes it is, though you should also get Beyond Good & Evil, Freespace 2, Jagged Alliance 2 and Sacrifice.

Sorry for continuing the drifting a bit off topic, but any known issues with playing the classic fallouts on XP?
You may, or may not, experience the screen going black occasionally, or maddingly often, in Fallout 1. If it happens, switching to PipBoy and back will refresh the screen. There are apparently some type of fixes for this on NMA but I never tried them. I was lucky enough to rarely experience this problem myself. It apparently has something to do with other Windows programs trying to update their windows in the background which screws with Fallout's fullscreen display.

Anyone tried playing a new game on very hard? Im nearing level 5 and im kinda confused about xp. I knew the enemies would be tougher but am I getting less xp on this difficulty? Is loot more sparse to come by?

I'm just getting back into Fallout 3 in anticipation for Broken Steel. I have a character at level 18 somewhat near the end of the game, but I was looking to mess around a bit at other locations before finishing it off. What's supposed to be the best mod out there to remove/increase the level cap and keep things fairly balanced? It's just going to be something temporary until Broken Steel, but I'd still not want it to break the game.

So I had one of those "should've saved moments" last night in this game. I was going through
vault 87 with
Charon in tow and just blasting away wave after wave of super mutants. Anyways, I get into this corridor with 3 super mutants and pull up VATS and proceed to plug shots in each of them. After I hit confirm, I start firing my shots and I notice Charon running in front of my LOS and every single one of my shots nails him and he's quickly reduced to a green pile of goo. I'm pissed off as I haven't saved since the last autosave point which was almost an hour ago so instead of reverting back I decide to just trudge on. I loot his corpse as I had equipped him with the special Power Armor and eventually pick up Fawkes. Once she joins me, I hand her the special power armor as I needed to lighten up my load. We go through the rest of dungeon and you eventually get split apart. Once reunited after
raven rock
, I inspect fawkes and see that the power armor is NO LONGER THERE..
My last save point was after getting into Little Lamplight
..At this point, I shut off the game and just called it a night.

Ugh, my PC game has weird graphical issues about a minute after loading my game. Like the game plays at like 1 FPS and the colors start to bleed into one another. And when I go back to the desktop, I have random pixels across the screen as weird colors. I assume it's from version 1.5. I also got a bluescreen after the update, my first ever on this PC.

Dammit and just when I got back into this game.

Isn't the latest version 1.4?

You are right mate, 1.5 came out today with a few fixes, gonna update later today when I get home from work

http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/updates.html

Updates in 1.5:

Code:
New Features

New achievements for Broken Steel

Bug Fixes

Fixed issue with VATS calculations not appearing properly for perks (PC)

Fixed crash related to altered references between master files

LOD objects render properly when loaded from DLC worldspaces

Fixed issue with companion NPCs not loading into cells immediately after player

Sigh, 1.5 is totally fucked up for me. Once I load a game, BSOD. God damn it.

Can I downgrade easily to 1.4? Because I can't play the game in its current state.

Quick question about Broken Steel, if I leave any side quests unfinished at the end of the game, will I be able to complete them once Broken Steel is installed and I'm roaming the wasteland or will those side-quests simply have ended?

You can still do them, they have said that all side quests are still available after you use Broken Steel to continue past the end of the MQ.

Started to play this an a couple of hours in.

I'm in this long-ass underground thing after the radio station and have exhausted pretty much all my healing stuff. Now, I figured I could teleport back to shop but no - "can't travel while there are enemies near by". Well no shit, that's why I need to travel. I'm too low on energy to fight them. So I'm stuck.

Question 1 - how the hell do I get to stock up if I'm stuck?

Question 2 - does the game involve a richer adventure mechanic than moving long distances between objective points and shooting enemies on the way?

Running between objective points isn't really adventuring, just go wander the wasteland.

If you're only a couple of hours in and you've already got past the radio station you're definitely focusing too much on the main quest.

As for health, if you cant just outrun the enemies (normally possible) your only option is to turn back and get to a place without enemies around.

1. You can't go back the way you came?

2. You don't have to follow the objective points. You can wander around and stumble on other quests.

Hmm... was finally able to escape by using my last nuke. I'm now some 7 hours in, and even if I find the game a bit uneventful, the world has got this odd draw that just makes me want to walk and look around.

Anyway, my current quest is to head to Rivet City. I have a couple of questions:

1. How can I learn to use an armor? I found an awesome armor from some guards but I supposedly learn training.

2. Is this game supposed to be hard as fuck or am I doing something wrong? I seem to be chronically out of stim-packs, frag grenades and money, and three super mutants attacking at me at once is hard. I'm level 6.

Yeah, I've got the same feeling and I rarely ever get such wanderlust in videogames.

1. You'll learn to use it as you progress through the main quest.

2. No, actually it's a really easy game. Would you believe that in my 70 hours of play time, I didn't use a single stim pack? You just need to know what are the right skills to pick. Early on, go for Repair and Small Guns and raise both of those to at least 80 or so first. Try not to shoot outside of VATS to conserve ammo. Also, you're a little underleveled for where you're at now. Go do some main quest and gain two or three levels and you'll be fine.

Also if you have the DLC, you can learn how to use it by completing
Operation: Anchorage
.

Now I know why the game was so hard. I hadn't bothered to dismantle the bomb which would give me my own bed. So any time I got hurt I'd need to pay. I must say I got quite far this way! Now with my own bed and ability to warp between battles and Megaton, things got a lot easier.

Am I reading this right? Im looking at the side quest guides and there are only 17-18 side quests? What happened to the 100s you can get in Oblivion?

Shit, its true? I thought that these were just the main side quests, and that there were some smaller ones littered about...guess not.

I found the sidequest wayyyy more entertaining in Fallout 3 than in Oblivion. Some of them are pretty big. I would say that Fallout 3 is good because of his Sidequest. The main quest is kinda short and boring. You also get most of the good stuff in sidequests ...
Lincoln's Repeater wooohoooo

Seriously, Fallout 3's "sidequests" are the best...ever.They are massive, original and rewarding.

The only sidequest I hated was the Nuka Cola challenge because I used up all my quatums on my first file, and this was one of the last quests I did. I had do this one and the bobblehead one on my second file for 1000/1000. :lol

The reward really blows too. Next time I run into her I'm going to bribe her boyfriend and blow her head off.

2nd one is brotherhood of steel in a .....rambo ...pose

and as far as quests go

fallout 3 vs oblivion is definitely a quality vs quantity comparison. I just hope that the next elder scrolls is a bit smaller, less "dur hur' fencepost-like quest givers/npc's

I dont think either had strong quest outside a few. Like The Replicant Man or Shoot Em in the Head werent merely balls to the walls combat, good loot, choices, interesting premise. Quest like Head of State and Oasis had such poor writing and were so stupid I was facepalming the entire time, not to mention HoS's horrible bug problems. They just highlighted the inconsistent nature of the world Bethesda built.

I've always wanted to get into Dwarf Fortress, but I'm in the middle of CRPG and p&c adventure marathon. I'm on BG II, KotOR II and The Longest Journey right now.

Mass Effect also had that "off in one sentence" thing. Everyone tries to duplicate the Master, but they just fail miserably.

yeah the latest patch has my (right before the end set piece moment) save crashing left and right so I just uninstalled and deleted the save... honestly i cant believe it stayed that stable (my gamesave) this long, I went through like 2 versions of FOOK, 5 versions of FWE, martigens, etc, Oblivion needed a new game on almost every new mod version so in that respect Fallout 3 is alot more stable, the old girl just finally buckled under my frankenstein of a game save :lol

I haven't even set foot in Anchorage, or The Pitt yet, so I ll just wait for broken steel and FOOK 2.0 and whatever else they do to it and start fresh again, using fwe tho I think i hit most of the quests and I was only level 13 so its definitely do able to do all the quests and enjoy yourself without hitting the level cap if you use the Fallout Wanderers Edition mod with its xp tweaks..

I kinda wanna wait on dwarf fortress, he hasnt released a new version since september so im thinking we should be getting something soon.

So, I just bought The Pitt and I loaded my old save file up just before the end of the game, and I'm not sure how to get it started. I read there's a radio transmission. I was outside Washington Memorial, warped to Megaton, waited 24 hours and still nothing. Is there something I have to do to get the radio transmission to start The Pitt?
