The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I might do that, does it work good? Just plug in the wired controller and there you go or do you need to set it u

Yes it's a full fledged Games for Windows title (not in name only like some PC releases), so full 360 pad and acheivement support

Also, I toyed around with playing this with the 360 pad, but the look/turn speed is soooo shitty, and when your panning all the way around, the screen shakes/jitters ...like ALOT. Maybe this is what Dark10x was talking about?
Yes, that's precisely what I was talking about. The fix I posted should solve that.

I'm only playing with the 360 pad as it feels much smoother while exploring. The analog walking (which you obviously cannot do while using a keyboard) and smoother camera motion is appreciated in a slower paced game such as this.

Hrm, I stored all my stuff in an outdoor footlocker in springvale, then went to a different location and moved time forward by a week...everything's still there. Knowing Oblivion, though, it might take longer than that to vanish if it's going to.

Read the post I made before you, that's a good way to get a place where you can store stuff :)

Bingo ...this is prolly while I'll end up enjoying this more with a controller ...Same thing with Oblivion.
Believe it or not but the small pans and suttle changes in movement speed really do add alot

I took some screenshots for you a couple of pages back :)

Chiggs said that the game HAS to keep running at 60fps for the ini fix to work? ...other wise a framerate drop will get rather ugly?

...hmm, I've been framerate cap happy as of late so who knows :D

I don't see the point of the food purifier-- you're still eating rat poop that heals for +6 HP. Stimpacks or meds or bust.

I was already thinking that from the very beginning when I started reading what food was giving you

So I played this for a few more hours last night. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Even if the game does level scale badly like Oblivion (can't tell this early in the game), the fact that you have to explore and finish quests to find new locations just keeps me going. Oblivion was a ridiculous bore when you had the entire map available to you, and you knew exactly what you'd be doing for the rest of the game.

Oh, and I can't believe you get THAT for Moira's quests. I'm definitely motivated to finish it now.

I'm doing the minefield currently...how the hell do you get by without the mines, or the sniper blowing you up? Can I get a mine detector?

Also, what's the downside to being crippled?

So is anyone else here playing the PC version with a 360 pad?

I've been switching off between kb/m and 360 controller....

I like having mouse control in the pipboy, loot screens, and merchant screens; makes those processes about 50% faster.

Grrr, fucking hell.

Just played for a half hour, did a bunch of selling and buying in Megaton...

Walk into the women's restroom and BOOM. Black screen with music still playing.

Had to end the process by alt-tabbing to my desktop.

Argh, did not quicksave.

I installed the ATI hotfix for FC2 and Clear Sky tonight, btw.

Fucking annoying.

This keeps happening to me, constantly. Last night I managed to get in one solid play session of something like an hour and a half, but the rest of the time I couldn't play for more than 15 minutes without randomly crashing to the desktop (and needing a reboot to get the game running again). And sometimes only 5.

I've tried every fix that people have recommended on the bethsoft forums and elsewhere, to no avail. I spent more time last night trying to fix this than actually playing.

I left Megaton and made it to the general vicinity of the radio station but I can't find an entrance. Where the hell is it? Is it down the stairs to the train station??

Anyone? Please don't make me have to go to GameFAQs.

I think you might have encountered a bug with the whole "killing the Sheriff incident". I tried doing EXACTLY what you were talking about, and when I busted a cap in the Sheriff's head, everyone and their mother went completely ape-shit and started attacking me. Guns, bats, switchblades, everyone wanted me dead. I even tried leaving Megaton, but the mob either followed me out, or if I ever returned they would just kick the shit out of me again.

Also, I completely destroyed my first play-through by blowing up Megaton before getting the next lead on where my father was, so I think I broke the main quest. I probably could have just stumbled on the next location to continue the main quest, but I figured I'd just start over.

I had to go through
subway tunnels to even get anywhere near the radio station. Seems the tunnels are the way to get anywhere.

Once I got close I found the BOS and followed them to the door of the Radio Station.

Well, I haven't experienced it myself, but he says that, while using this setting, if your framerate drops below 60 fps the actual game will run in slow motion. So, you basically need to hold 60 fps at all times for this to work properly. That hasn't been a problem for me, though, but I'm sure some PCs will struggle.

Thanks! I'm actually surprised by those shots, to be honest. It is a big step down, but it doesn't look that bad at all. Are you actually using 640x480 resolution?

How does the framerate hold up?

On a related note, does anyone know the specifics of using the 360 headset/mic plugged into a 360 controller plugged into my PC? Everything seems fine from a Vista perspective (ie. I can hear and record from the mic) but when I tried to chat with someone on my friends list, I could hear his voice over my speakers and he couldn't hear me at all.

I hear that, if you clock all of your points into Luck during the S.P.E.C.I.A.L part, it gives you a +5 bonus in every other stat - or something of the like. Is this true? Because, if so, I'm going to restart right now.

Yeah it doesn't look as bad as say HL2 using the lowest settings. I'm surprised that the game runs quite okay, sure it dips every now and again, but its probably just cause my processor can't keep up.

Let's just say it's still very playable. I noticed that if the game runs for a long time, it will run better, any idea why that is?

Using 800x600 resolution btw, lowest settings.

Any min-max experts here?

I have the guide, and Charisma influences speech, barter, and "disposition of others towards you." I'm debating dropping Charisma to 1 and using skill points (high Int, bobbles, and books) to get my Speech and Barter to 100. But I have no idea how this "disposition" will effect my story options, since the only dialogue options I've seen so far have been related to Speech.

Perhaps there are certain quests or dialogue trees that only open up with Charisma 5+?

this reads like a cautionary tale about why i play games on consoles. i'm just not willing to deal with the technical shit.

A reminder of the pains of modern PC gaming :(

These crashes to desktop have happened to me constantly on both Morrowind and Oblivion on PC. So its not a surprise to hear it happening with Fallout too. The having to reboot sounds a bit weird though.

The 360 versions of Oblivion and Fallout 3 seem much more stable, and rarely crash.

Not only does this give you get a safe place to put your extra stuff but you can sleep there for free anytime you want among other nifty things.

what about if
the sheriff is dead?

Zzoram you are right. It autosaved when I came out of the room. :D

Here's what it looks like on my PC. I'm too sleepy to keep playing and I hardly made any progress tonight. Still just putzing around Megaton and was just on my way to the market to look for food/medicine for the writer of the book.

It's not a PC gaming issue. It's a Bethesda issue. Every other game works perfectly fine, and Oblivion and Morrowind both had these same sort of bullshit problems.

Bethesda, Bethesda never changes.

What a game. Having just finished Fable 2 I was surprised I got into it so quickly. It really reminds me of a 'best of' mix of Stalker and Oblivion. The best praise I can give it is that I was completely sucked in. I started playing around 7 and next thing I knew it was 12:30. Just about to leave Megaton once I decide what to do with Moriety. I'm playing a 'good' character so I'm limited.

Playing on PC with these specs:

E6600 core 2 duo
7900GT
2 Gigs DDR2 800

Game runs smooth. It auto detected at "Medium" which was actually high textures but some other stuff turned down and an 800x600 resolution. I kicked up the resolution to 1280x1024 and have been having a great time. No issues at all.

Has anyone found any great melee weapons so far? I was going to go with a melee focus but I feel like the skill points I've put into melee weapons are wasted as the best I have is the freakin baseball bat with 8 damage when I have pistols that do more than that. I'm getting the itch to reroll and use those melee weapon skill points somewhere else.

It's true, it's true.

But I also speak of trying to tweak games on the PC to hit that sweet spot of performance and pretty. There was once a time where I was pretty heavily into it, but now it's just such a chore.

I guess it's one of those things that some will love and some with loathe.

Coming from Megaton, the compass leads you to a subway entrance, from there you should be able to figure it out. Make sure you look at your map, sometimes you need to traverse the underground tunnels to get from A to B; the map has a method of displaying that.

Only good things come from tweaking.

My only problem is with getting the game to keep its woody and stay up. And another thing that tells you it's not a PC gaming issue rather than a Bethesda issue is that the PS3 version didn't exactly come away unscathed, either. I don't think Bethesda is capable of properly beta testing their games.

Here are some pics I took from the PC version with the graphics all the way up (except only 2x AA). This game is gorgeous, I don't care what anybody says.

It takes longer to find good melee weapons, but they definitely exist. The sledge hammer for one.

I still find it odd that Unarmed and Melee are separate, since they are so similar.

I guess if you minus the terrible animations and character models it's gorgeous. I'd say it looks good. Nothing more nothing less but i'm early in the game. Who knows. Maybe it will change.

Unarmed is essentially hand-to-hand combat, even if you happen to have something on those hands (power fist, brass knuckles, etc). Melee is when you use any item other than your hands to destroy an enemy in close combat.

I guess I always figured that someone good at one of those would be good at both of those, but I suppose it's like the small guns vs big guns situation.

Sounds good.. I have 50 in melee weapons and basically bum rushing guys with guns to take them out with lead pipes and bats. It's ugly. I'll probably stick it out and see what comes down the line.

Oh wow, so Fire Ants are incredibly ammo consuming. I went from slaying Raiders with 200 ammo to spare, to being out of ammo, and not making much progress against Fire Ants.

Is there any differences to the VATS system for instance.
