The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I secretly hope this game is Oblivion with guns. I'd like it to be Oblivion with swords, but I understand why Bethesda might like to try something new.

From the minutes i've played of Fallout 1, it seems like the two games could coexist. I imagine if the two were melded, there would be a lot of Oblivion(read, Bethesda-isms). That doesn't do anything for people that love Fallout and hate Oblivion, but I might come out with a new love of Fallout and my continuing love of Elder Scrolls games. Its selfish, and the NMA people might end up with their beloved franchise shit on, but it's really all about me.

Exactly how I feel. For all of the hate the 'Oblivion with guns' template has taken, thatsounds fucking awesome to me.

Give me Oblivion with Nerf darts or water balloons, just make it as awesome as Elder Scrolls IV was.

Should go pickup Fallout 3 and GoW2 now. Trying to not jump the gun.

Does anyone know where the fallout 3 online reviews are?

I agree :D That's why even with the banner I posted, it's all in fun :) I really liked Oblivion and put over a hundred hours into it, and I'd love for the same to be with Fallout.

Then again, I also love Fallout 1 and 2. So really this is just a big win to me.

I still think "Oblivion with guns" is funny though. And thus, my banner.

Can't wait. :D It's crazy this game is coming out only a week after Fable II, and Gears 2 a week after this. :lol Such gaming goodness.

So is this game street dated for next Tuesday?

All I need to know.

my impressions so far (short impressions at that since I jumped back to Fable 2 since co-op patch is up since the game finally released):

- Intro is long.
- 3rd person perspective stinks so far. Character walks weird.
- The turn-based portion is fun.
- Once your out of the fallout shelter, the world is so big that you'll probably get lost if you don't quickly resort to your map and read what you are supposed to do (I walked around for an hour before realizing what i needed to do)
- Not a lot of NPCs to interact with so far.
- Graphics are great
- I want my damn dog.
- Fallout 3 makes me want to be a vigilante while Fable 2 has me wanting to be a saint.
- I've resorted to a lot of Oblivion tendencies with picking up every item to sell it.
- Combat is overall satisfying.

Sorry for keeping it short and brief... I am playing Fable 2 co-op at this moment.

This.

Tomorrow for you? I wish I had street dates broken around me :(

"Oblivion with guns" makes me even more excited. I just need a good, solid review before getting the PC version.

Whats wrong with Oblivion with guns? Oblivion is pretty good and if improved upon even better. Is this supposed to be a bad thing?

People need something to bitch about.

Day One. Cannot fucking wait to roam the wastes. Watching Boy and His Dog and Road Warrior the night before.

I wonder which dog is better. Dog from Fable 2 or dog from Fallout 3?

To anyone who has played the game: is the bolt-action rifle any good without VATS? I'd love to play through the game with a weapon like that, but if it's nerfed...

Ok, after watching some videos, the gunplay looks solid and satisfying which is one thing I hated about Oblivion, and since it's an RPG, I can see this being an insane value pick up since I am on a tight budget this holiday.

This and LBP are my only pickups until December.

If your small arms skill is decently high it's good. It was my fallback weapon for most of the game.

Did you play it for review? If so when is the embargo up on the goodness?

after taking a break from Fallout 3, I can honestly say that I miss it. I swear, once I finish these other reviews and the g/f stops watching Grey's Anatomy on DVD, I'll be playing this until the sun comes up lol.

Edit: Embargo is October 28th at 12:01 am

Damnit.... That is such a long time. I need to play. Hearing that makes me happy though.

but what do you want to know?

How good is your VATS accuracy off the bat? A general idea of body parts with a specific weapon would be great.

well with melee weapons or explosives you simply target the whole enemy, but long-range weapons allow you to target any limb, the torso, head, and whatever weapon they're carrying. it's cool until you collect a damaged weapon that needs to be repaired, so i've found myself actually running away in order to save a good weapon

Do you find that VATS brings you out of the action/game too much, or is it so well integrated that its use seems natural?

didn't play oblivion, and haven't played any fallout either

lolololololololol this is prolly killing some of you to wait one more week

no it doesn't bring you out of the game. in fact i'm using it more than freestyle aiming because it's more accurate to do so. the reticule is so small that if it's between me and some hulking mutant fist, i go for VATS because the 3rd person shot of you smearing someone across the wasteland never looked so good

and oh my god the gore. you will make limbs disconnect and the blood it will gush. nailboard ftw

Does it feel like Oblivion, really?
Does it feel epic? As in size, and exploring wise.
Are the NPC's really that boring and not interesting?
Is it difficult, or just about right?
One of the best wrpg for a long time? (Since The Witcher of course ;) )

1) can't say never played it
2) most are boring but there are some interesting ones. it'll make you appreciate the effort they put into mass effect-- especially the lip-synching
3) it's fair. since everything is open right away you can just keep walking out into the vast beyond and take your chances, but it's a better idea to go through quests first. you'll live longer, simple as that
4) that's not my call to make : ]

Is it fun?
i'm having ups and downs with it. it was engaging at first but then there was a lull and i took a break. coming back it was interesting again and there's plenty of combat to be had

a few interesting facts:
-each time you save the game uses roughly 2-2.5mb of space for every new file you create
-day/night cycle is neat
-some parts of the soundtrack are gorgeous, such as the music played while you wander around. fighting music is more of a standard affair. oh, and the radio has some interesting tracks : ]
-also, it will scare the shit out of you if you get sucked in (i mean playing in the dark on a 5.1 setup, exploring ghost towns and abandoned buildings)

lol, glad they got you Mr. Spinnington... so many people askings q's haha. one more episode of Greys left and then I'm re-entering Capital Wasteland.

you know i'm playing it on ps3, but what system are you on?

so far i've seen some slowdown, pop-in, and it even froze on me once (except for the music). everything is normally smooth, though; smooth enough to overlook these issues for the most part

and how many hours in are you?

I've read quite a few reviews/impressions/preview about Fallout. But about the PS3 version specifically I need to ask:

How's the framerate?
Texture quality?
Texture pop-in?
Load times?
Jaggies?
