If the gear is a Unique based off a similar gun, say, the Terrible Shotgun, you can repair it using the Combat Shotgun. Really unique guns, like Lincoln's Repeater (fuck do I love that gun) have the exact problem you mention.
Thanks for the info! I'll add one that might have been mentioned, Talon Armors provide the parts to repair Ranger's Armor. :3 Ranger Armor 36 Dr, + 5 AP/+10 Small Arms! Woot! Have yet to try this, but regular Plasma Rifles repair the A3-21 as well.
My character. A good person who will not hesitate to be disgusting to bad guys. I like to wound people in the legs, follow them and stab them in the head.
go in the tunnels in between the two buildings you can see just north east of the bridge Arefu is on. In the zombie guy's back room is a drain cover that will take you to The Family
you couldn't play solely in third person, it would be way to dificult to get in all the nooks and crannies you have to in order to reach items, chests, etc....
i usually reserve third person for looking at new armor or guns, or generic roaming in the wastelands...
3rd person isn't so bad if you zoom in past the waist of your character into a sort of resident evil 4 cam. Still the dude bounces up and down like he's walking on a trampoline....
I'm not playing only in 3rd person, but you get used to the mediocre animation quality. I really like playing in it now and switch between the two when necessary. Combat is the hardest in 3rd person real time, but VATS will solve that..

This always makes me laugh while I'm playing. "Raider Head Crippled" as the head goes flying off. I usually follow that by saying; "Yeah, looks pretty crippled to me." :lol
Also the pip-boy laughing just adds to the hilarity, he's just so happy someone's head got blown off.
Mwahahaha! I finally get to kill Zimmer that bastard! It sucks that I have to reload a file at the 14 hour mark to do it, but boy it feels good to be part of liberty!
Darn it!
Ignored about te Level 20-caps.. ..I choose the see everything in the map perk..thinking that next I was going to choose another one..and turned out..I'm not getting experience anymore..
I got one by killing Gustavo at Tenpenny Tower, then taking all the items from his body (then eating him), then taking his Armament Key to his locker outisde...I have a few guns with scope (a Magnum and some other one)..also by killing.stealing.
From a Secret-Stash just outside Megaton. Carried by Arkansas in Minefield, Allistair Tenpenny in Tenpenny Tower, and two ghoul snipers in Mama Dolce's.
I also the second raider I met had one. I also found one in the wastes that was in a train place with walkways. It was on a desk, so it wasn't random. I think I found it headed from Andel to Tenpenny Tower.
I was wondering so far. This is an amazing game for me so far, but I have not even gone to GNR radio yet, how many hours of main quest do I have left? And how much more awesome does it get?
I have not been to any other vaults or rivet city.
*I'm level 13 and have done quite a few side quests by the way.

I found Dogmeat, saved him and took him with me to Minefield town or whatever it's called, I killed the dude with the sniper and sent dogmeat to find ammo as I was running out. Is there any way to call him back... any way to find out of he's dead?
Currently I've played for 23 hours, but really taking my time. I'm level 11, only on the 'Scientific Pursuits' mission of the main plot, but concentrating on wandering and side quests. I've been focusing on Small Guns, Science, Repair and Speech, though I should have been putting more into Lockpick and Energy Guns. For a while the gameplay had become just running right up to enemies and blowing their heads off in VATS with the combat shotgun, but that felt cheap, so I've started playing more tactical. Though in my experience nothing dispatches enemies quite like a point blank shotgun to the face.
I found Dogmeat at level 3 by accident
(he was running though the wastes just south of the minefield attacking raiders. This goes against everything I've read online, but there he was)
and he's been an invaluable companion. He's a great tank and has only died a few times. Though if I know I'm going to use missiles I'll leave him in Megaton.
I've been playing mainly good
killed the overseer and probably going to blow up Megaton
but otherwise I'm good. I am slowly slipping downhill though. It's becoming more fun to be a prick.
This might be my game of the forever. It's rough, has some serious glitches, but the setting, story, leveling system, combat system, quest system and NPC interactions are my among favorite from any RPG ever. Even the balance is amazing. At this point in most RPG's I'm unstoppable, but even now I always feel on the verge of death, can never carry enough loot, and still struggling to survive and make ends meet. Moreover, I can't understand how so many gamers can claim this game didn't grab them. The moment I stumbled out of the vault into the blinding sunlight of the wastes may have been the most epic of my gaming career since Link grabbed the master sword and become a teenager in OOT. I felt like I had spent my life in the vault and was now helpless and alone in a hostile world. I was mad at my father for forcing me to kill the overseer and escape, and was instantly compelled to find out why he had done this to me and what had happened to the world. Epic.
I would suggest to everyone playing for the long haul to avoid the Here and Now perk (if you play to level 20 that's actually 1 less perk you get because you wasted one to go up a level), and avoid using perks that increase XP earned or add skill points. XP is earned easily enough as it is and 100 is the maximum for skill anyway, which can be reached for most skills by lvl 20 with a high enough Intelligence and by finding enough skill books and bobbleheads. Instead focus on Intense Training to improve SPECIAL and perks that add passive bonuses like Strong Back, Finesse, etc...(IMO). Also from what I can tell Solar Powered is the best lvl 20 perk, though no one seems to mention it. At that point exploring to find all the locations would be more fun, you have enough AP to kill anything, but slowly recharging health would eliminate the need to find stimpacks ever again. I guess it depends though.
Gripes
Combat - I love VATS, but the combat can feel janky at times, which is confusing more than anything else. I have 95 in Small Guns and 30 on Energy Weapons and sometimes the same position will yield a higher hit rate for the energy weapons than an upgraded hunting rifle, wtf?
Glitches - I've run into a few gamebreakers, and they suck. Major sections of the main plot can be accidentally skipped if your not careful, talking to NPC's about earlier quests can reset dialog trees making new quests permanently unavailable (Moira I'm looking at you), and I've slipped through the ground like quicksand on a few occasions. And somehow the game stopped letting me get healed from doctors or trade in scrap metal. Though I have over 100 caps and scrap to trade my only option in the dialog is that I don't have enough money, or I don't have any scrap...again...wtf?
I put over 200 hours into Oblivion across two characters, and I feel like I'm going to do at least that here. I plan to get to level 20 and keep exploring every nook and cranny of this game as long as possible before wrapping it up. Dogmeat and I are going to change this world, save what can be saved, and destroy the rest. Epic.
Got to level 20 on my second character. Big guns and melee was a huge mistake (Flamer aside), especially on very hard. Even with heavy armor on I still get destroyed when using a minigun :lol
How do you put a grenade in someone's pocket for it to blow up properly? I've pickpocket a couple of people, placed grenades in their pocket however they didn't blow up
