The Official GTA: Chinatown Wars thread

LOL if you hold B and Y in a car to do a burnout, you will leave a trail of fire. If any pedestrian is by you when yu do this they will catch on fire. I just got a 1 star from doing this. Also I killed someone and a pedestrian started taking pictures with their cell phone. Awesome game

sounds realistic to me.
Not being sarcastic either. I could see someone doing this

The mission where you
Run the other racers off the road and run blocker so Chan can win the street race
is so good.

I just picked up a guy took him to the bus station he proceeded to get out of the car and started punching a bus. Apparently he thought it was a dragon that needed slaying lol

ASH was the only 2 gbit one, wasn't it?

(for those unfamiliar with bits vs. bytes, 1 gbit = 128 MB)
Are you serious? I thought the gigabit part was typo? So much for thinking that I know much of computers. Anyways, thats actually surprisingly small for the huge game it seems to be.

Have it on pre-order and the impressions (some so funny, condoms and dildos in the trash?:lol and reviews drive me to want to have it right now when I cant till Friday. :-/ Finishing Madworld will hold me over though.

whats the quickest way to get scratch offs in this game? Just started and want to try them out asap since everyone says how fun they are.

There are specific "scratcher" locations in the game. They are everywhere. I would recommend looking for any stores with blue chevrons that lead to a door. I seriously have spent 30 minutes trying to win a house, but no go :( So addicting.

Did he actually say this?

Good sign for sales I guess.

Maybe, but when I picked my copy up at Gamestop yesterday (didn't preorder), I was the first sale that the had all day and it was about 7pm.

I love how you get a different voice quote everytime you wake your DS up from sleep. Awesome.

thanks for the response, i found one. I just wish i was as lucky in real life with scratch offs as i am in this game, ive already tripled my first 100 bucks in about 5 minutes of playing.

edit: wow that was quick theres my star plaza hotel

I've never been able to really play portable games at home, but wow, this game is amazing, I just can't stop. Gives me something to do while the wife takes over the 360 with Peggle.

I take it more as WalMart not carrying a lot of copies because it's an extremely mature game for what is mostly a console for kids. Let's not forget this is the same retail chain that only carries the clean version of explicit CD's.

A few thoughts after digging into the game a bit more today:

- The drug trade works well. It's a great way to make some cash, and you can easily make thousands of dollars on just one transaction. The game alerts you if you will get a high price for an item somewhere, so it's not just trial and error.

- The missions are challenging. I've failed a few of them several times. Some are a bit frustrating (the leaking tanker, the guy with the heart condition) but they are really creative and fun. None of them are too long though, which may be a negative point for some but I think it works since it's a handheld.

- Jacking supply trucks for drugs/guns is a great idea, but sometimes they are more trouble than they are worth. For the drug vans you can easily jack them, but for the Ammunation trucks you have to damage their truck badly enough for them to get out. The easiest way to do this is to do a drive-by, but if you take too long you really just get ammo you just used. It seems like a lot of work for no reward. Sometimes you get some awesome weapons like assault rifles.

- Some e-mails can be annoying. For example, when you shop Ammunation online, you get an e-mail confirming your order, and then another e-mail for when the guns arrive to your place (which is only a few seconds later). I know this is realistic and everything, but it's annoying to check these.

- There are a lot of cool random sidemissions. I was just walking around and went up to a hotdog vendor, and he offered me a mission to plant a bug on his wife's car. Nothing special, but it was pretty unexpected and a cool diversion.

- A cop was chasing me, and he crashed into a hotdog vendor (maybe the same one from before?) and exploded, killing the hotdog guy. Lulz.

I failed that mission once, and when I selected to retry, I had an option to skip the transportation to the objective. Didn't have to walk there, pretty cool. Also figured out you can walk/run by holding the B button...don't have to press on the D pad.

This game is cracking me up. I rolled a flaming sedan at full speed into some gangsters and bailed out of the car with my uzi sprayin bodies that were flying in every direction from the car explosion. Also saw a cop get out of a car to help somebody when another cop (driving to the scene) ran over him :lol

So impressed with the GTAisms. Cops beating people up. Random car accidents. Awesome chases. ect ect.

I'd recommend turning the driving view look-ahead all the way up, turning on the top-screen GPS, and turning on the top-screen health bar. These should have all been on by default. They make driving/not dying so much easier.

+1 for that. Top Screen GPS, health and radar. I've had a few 3 star/3car wanted levels and got them all down by just driving fast and wrecking the police. So many cool ways to take them down. Slamming on the breaks so they run into your or a building, straight up ramming them (need a fast car) or putting them in a wall. Almost feels a bit like Burnout.

ok i'm finally getting the hang of the frustrating-ass controls. give me fun things to do running around the city.

I am playing with out driving assist and just auto drive by and have no real complaints about the controls after a few hours. Once you get the feel of the cars you can really weave in and out of traffic. Just keep the stylus out between your thumb and forefinger and your good to go.

TheGrayGhost said:
I don't like that the game uses both the buttons and the stylus. It's all or nothing, for me. Either do all or buttons, or all stylus. I don't like having to switch between them.

Missing out. Really the stylus and button controls here are very well done. Like I said just keep the stylus out in between your fingers and thumb on the buttons. Only real annoying occasion where you might not be ready to put the stylus to screen is at toll booths. Even then you are driving slow so its not much of a problem.

Paramedic missions are the only stylus related annoyance, as it's hard to drive and tap someone's heart, and the only other option is to stop.

Then again, it would probably work better if I just used my thumb.

Yeah I guess the medic ones are kinda annoying too. I just had my first during the main quest line. Your probably right using your thumb their might be best.

Fletcher said:
I find it works best when I hold the stylus in my lips like a cigarette.
Haha, I've actually been doing this at some parts. I appreciate the use of the stylus, but sometimes it comes at the most inconvenient moment. The ambulance missions are an excellent example of this. If you want to re-energize their heart, you have to take your thumb off the accelerator and hit the icon on the touch screen for a few seconds. This causes you to stop, which sucks if the cops are chasing you. And surprise, the time they make you do this in the story, you have a three star wanted level. Unexpected stylus use isn't too bad at times. Jacking a car only to find out you have to do a minigame against the clock can be exciting at times. It can get intense if you're not fast enough, especially for the digital hijacking minigame where you have to hit the right numbers.

Its pretty awesome >.<!

Only did a few missions, driving is abit tricky, but I got better as I played.

Turning circles of cars can be pretty lame.

I've been playing a bit at work and I must say: wow, I'm impressed! It feel like GTA, plays like it. It just really, really works.

Just had one question before getting even though I'll be buying it whatever the reply is : Only one save possible or several save files?

Amazing game. I had a lot more fun with it so far than I had with GTAIV. Love the humor, the style and all the little details. Especially the random missions are great and very funny. And it's definitely a very, very impressive technical achievement. I hope this won't be the last GTA on DS/ DSi (custom soundtracks via SD card would be great), and I'd love to see what Rockstar Leeds could do on Wii.

Two slots.

Not having the 'talk radio' station sucks, that was the best part of gta 3/vc for me, hilarious stuff.

But they did manage to pack in a pretty huge city into the game, the 3d is really well done, its probably the best on the DS.

The both Rune Factory games are 128 as well and Daigassu 2 is 256MB iirc

I hope my copy arrives soon, not shipped yet! I just can't wait :(

Are those the trucks with the little red arrows above them that you can't jack? I couldn't figure out what those were and gave up before I could destroy one.

For the person that asked what the security cameras look like - they look like one of the cameras you see on the wall in a store or on a building like in a bank and have a little red light on them. Seems you have to be at the right spot/angle to actually see them.

I'm getting this today as well as Hatsworth. DS FTW! This sounds unbelievably awesome!

Certain tasks are obviously built for using your thumb instead of the stylus, like the tolls.
How is it with the thumb stylus? (still confused as to why the Lites didn't come with them)

After playing a ton of this, I have decided this is the best GTA since 3. I'd almost say it's better, it's all the little attentions to detail that make this game shine.

I have a question, maybe I'm blind and didn't see it, I come across these little swirly blue areas once in a while, wtf are those for?

Kunan said:

I have no idea, I don't have one. But the tolls, the heart monitor, anything thats just acting like a big button, you should tap it with your bare thumb. Hot wiring I do with the stylus.

Having 3D cars with physics is such a good step forward for the whole over-the-top design. As much as I love the sprite based cars in GTA and GTA2, its so much fun to be able to flip and roll cars now.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a big uproar over this game, the drug dealing in particular.

I always said that if I could ever play old fashioned GTA on a handheld, I'd be there day 1. I just ordered.

Best deal I found:
Buy.com has the game for $29.99 with free shipping (tax is added depending on your state).

I can't wait to play. The IGN/Gamespot reviews and the impressions here have me pumped to the max.

I've been enjoying the game a good amount too, and I really disliked GTA4 after spending 20 hours or so with it last year. The only thing I find a bit weird at times is the controls on foot, I'm constantly having trouble moving diagonally with the somewhat subpar pad on the DSL.

I did spend about 20 minutes scratching off lotto tickets though. Didn't win a house, but I did increase my pocket money from $100 to $500.

Psh, that's nothing. One of the first drug deals in the game a guy is selling heroin at $5 a bag. I went from having $200 to like $4000 within the first hour of gameplay after I sold it at a high price. :D

Yes, those are the trucks with the red arrow above them. The easiest way to get the driver out of the car is to throw a molotov at him. One molly and he'll come out shotgun firing. Once I got the truck back to my safehouse it was about to explode but you get it in the yellow circle to inspect it and it magically went out :D
