The video quality is horrible and not even worth looking at.

I completely disagree with you. It's a mobile phone, what do you expect? Sparkling 480 x 320 with 30 fps? Do you say that same thing about the youtube app? When I'm on a phone I'm more interested in getting the content, not the quality which it is coming in at. Obviously there are limitations.

I bought Scrabble and it's great so far, but the app crashes on me periodically. Annoying, but at least I get the option to resume my game when I start it up again.

PS - I suck at words. The computer kicked my ass big time.

Monkey Ball is really good. It's a must!

Another game I would recommend if you are into it is Texas Hold'em from Apple. It's really well done. If you hold the device horzontal you get an overview of the table and if you turn it you see the table from you perspective with animated players and all that jazz. It also has 9 player multiplayer over Wi-Fi. Pricepoint: 3,99€

So how powerful is it? Up to PSP standards?
No.
Not that it actually matters - people aren't interested in games on this store because of hardware power showcase.

Why exactly are you so "anti-PSP" anyways?
It's more a case of anti-anything that isn't made by Imagine Tech. Which these days means you're left with only handhelds to compare, and NDS hw isn't good enough to be bashed. ;) Though I believe Sony has become the preferred target 8 years ago anyway.

Splurged on Solitaire City from Digital Smoke. Didn't really want to pay that much ($10) but the cheaper solitaire options looked too chintzy and the Palm/Windows Mobile versions of this package got good reviews.

Based on first impressions, it's very solid. It doesn't appear to support landscape layout in any capacity but it has good tactile response for grabbing and moving cards, clean visuals, lots of game variations to play and all with training modes and multiple leaderboard ranking options (monthly, worldwide, personal, etc.).

Fuck, I don't know if I want to pay up $10 for Monkey Ball. I only have $14 and change on my iTunes account. :( How is that Trism game? I can seem to find a good idea of how it plays. Do you guys think Monkey Ball is worth the full $10?

i have 3 games.

MotionX Poker
Bomberman Touch
Supermonkey Ball

MotionX poker is by far the best of the 3, but all 3 are good.

Yeah I'm loving it, wish it kept the iPod playing in game tho like Trism.

Trism is like a mashup of Bejeweled and Hexic, with some board rotating action thrown in. It's got achievements and online leaderboards and tutorials to learn the basics so it's just as comprehensive a package as any XBLA game in the same price range. The performance is solid so if you like this kind of game, it's a good value.

Hmm, considering picking up this and MotionX over Monkey Ball. I am a huge fan of puzzle games.

I second motion X. I have monkeyball, trism and motion x. They are all good, but motion x is the most fun.

trism is fun and runs well. like everyone else mentioned, it's very much a bejeweled clone, only with gravity. definitely one of the more polished games so far.

monkey ball looks and runs great, though sitting upright in my bed playing, it's almost impossible for me to find a center of orientation. it's like trying to play a wii game laying down. the character isn't a 3d model, just a small sprite, but that doesn't detract from it at all.

You Sir have perfect taste. Agreed.

Holding off on any more iPhone purchases and staying with these three until more stuff hits, a hidden gem is discovered or proper trusted reviews hit.

Bah... can't believe I'm paying for cell phone games...

*buys yet another game after hearing people talk about motion*

Any impressions of Zen Pinball? I've read on Kotaku that it's *really* good. Does anyone here have it yet?
Just tried to buy it, but it looks like Apple's iTunes infrastructure is crapping out under load of 3G activations today.

I recommend Critter Crunch... it's made by a fellow GAFer... and has won a lot of awards... it crushed at the IGF Mobile competition... got a 9/10 on IGN... its a staff pick on Apple Store... trust me if you like original, Japanese unique puzzle games... get Critter Crunch !!!

I'm guessing you've never heard of iSolitaire? 100% free, been that way forever. The App store is cool, but paying for some of these apps is ridiculous.

As its made by a GAFfer I will get this as my last one to keep MotionX Poker, Monkey Ball & Trism company.

Then I'm done.

I only have Super Monkey Ball and Crash Bandicoot: Racing so far. Sadly can't play either one because fucking iTunes is having a complete meltdown.

It looks nice. I may get it next month.

I'm aware of it, as I am of a number of other jailbreak apps. But I'm not interested in going the jailbreak route.

The one I bought has a lot more game modes and features than iSolitaire and it's not precisely accurate to say that iSolitaire is free, since the developer has a donate button on his home page for the game. He's happy to take money for his effort, he's just leaving it in your hands to do the decent thing.

I have it and it has just one table and the ball moves a little slow, but it looks fairly nice and you tap the the top half or bottom half of the screen both left and right (sides) to use the bumpers. It plays pretty well and I like it, but with only one table it should be $2.99 not $4.99.

If you want Pinball on your phone though I'd say get it if you don't mind spending 5 bucks.

The content is what I want, where are the stats for the games or teams? I tried the video content again and it looks much better today. I tried it last night during the game and it looked horrible so maybe they put better quality content up after the game is over. Still, not being able to track a certain team and no stats for the games is unforgivable.

CritterCrunch is another gem, love the depth and twist on the match puzzle game.

Fave bit so far is spitting the melon seeds :D

Quick game impressions:
Trism: Awesome, really addicitive and puts a unique twist on the iphones accelerometer.
Monkeyball: Fun but takes getting used to and you need to be sitting in a proper position to do excel in this game at all, would most likely be a terrible game on a bumpy train/bus ride
Texas Hold Em: Im a poker fiend and this is a really great one, smart AI and the motion capture FMV stuff is hilarious. Local Wifi only play is a bummer.
Bomberman: Its ok...probably the weakest game I bought, maybe it gets better but the early levels are really easy and boring. No multiplayer at all is also pathetic for a game that thrives on it.
Bought that dice poker game due to all the recommendations here, bout to try it out.

Song Summoner which recently came out for the Ipod by Square Enix is freaking amazing though, best 5 bucks you will ever spend on a game.

I'm guessing the FW 2.0 isn't unlocked yet?

I'm asking again, does anyone know if its possible to make iphone an ipod touch? (just until the unlock arrives)

From what I've read if you've upgraded your jailbroken iPhone, you're assed out until there's a crack, sorry.

2.0's cracked already, there just sitting on the release for whatever reason.

Modojo just launched a dedicated channel to iPhone games. We have interviews from Gameloft, an overview of the big launch games, some reviews, etc:

http://www.modojo.com/iphone/

I don't have our schedule in front of us, but I CAN say that iphone game coverage is figuring very very heavily into our upcoming editorial plans. I know reviews of Hudson, Namco, and Gameloft's titles are in the works, as well as some (hopefully) exclusive first-looks at upcoming titles.

I don't like to pimp Modojo super often on GAF b/c it's bad form.... but I'm super proud of this iPhone channel. A lot of work goes into a launch like that. Many many phonecalls and emails between all the companies supporting the platform.

So if you intend on being an iPhone gamer, lemme know what you think, what features or content you'd like to see, etc.

Well, first things first. A channel on your web page dedicated to iphone gaming really should have a better page design for actual viewing on the iphone...

Edit: Understood \/\/\/

The irony is not lost on me, believe me. As Mo's EIC it's bothered me from day 1 that we were a handheld-specific site without a handheld-optimized alternate design. But we're a niche website published by a small(ish) company.

We have to pick and choose where to put our resources, and we decided it was more important to focus on the coverage itself than spend time/money on what would have to be an entirely new mobile/iphone-friendly design.

Curious if you've tried Sports Tap, and if so how they compare? It was a web app until now (well, still is), but today they made it into an app store entry also. I haven't upgraded to 2.0 yet, but I've been using it for game recaps all season until now. It sounds like At Bat might have taken some inspiration from them.

Fuck You Monkey in a Ball! Fuck you so fucking hard!

Do you need to be a surgeon with super accurate ... hand... skills to get past level 7 of world 1?

It's insanely sensitive to the slightest motion. And I'm trying to play this in a chair with my arms supported. I can't imagine ANYONE being successful at this game while taking a bus.

There was actually a surgeon who had his residents play Monkey Ball (GC) b/c of the precision and steady nerves it demanded.

i surely agree with you on the 'hw does not matter' part, as at the end of the day the iphone/ipt will do more for popularising handheld gaming among the PMP crowd than the psp ever did.
i really feel for sony pictures right now as their nifty PMP was hurt in the handheld gaming market by a nintendo device, and now the same fate awaits them in the hip-with-the-crowd PMP market, this time from apple. it's about time sony started making their money off the hw, and opened the bloody platform for unlicensed development. or went the apple route -licensed, but very accessible. /wishful thinking

Just wondering what radio app people are liking so far. I see Virgin, AOL, Pandora, etc...

Which is the good one???

Yeah, Pandora is probably the best just because of how uncannily good it's recommendation engine seems to be and for the fact that it essentially lets you set up your own radio station.

AOL Radio is solid, in terms of performance and overall functionality, but it relies on a preset selection of stations which seems rather limited.
