The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

I'm buying an iTouch specifically because of all this 2.0 shit that basically makes it one badass fucking device. If 2.0 is going to cost former users money, shouldn't I wait for models that come with it pre-installed?

Can't wait though, this update basically makes the iTouch a fucking pocket laptop :o

I watched that whole vid expecting to see some cool gameplay idea/mechanic. Spent the whole 2 minutes wondering wtf the big deal was. Then I came back to the thread and realised the big deal is that its a good looking mobile phone game.

And it looks VERY good I must say. Colour me impressed.
It's not running on iphone yet though, so don't get your hopes up just yet. All iphone games seem to be a fair bit less power than PSP right now, for example.

I'm not going to get too excited, I'm not getting one any time soon :D

I reckon though it will be great to see another popular handheld platform. Nice to see there are some high-end games in the works for it.

So, does the iPod Touch support all of these games/features? I've been considering checking out the Touch for a while, but only if it were capable of supporting all iPhone features (excluding phone and e-mail, which I don't need).

iPhone graphics have better image qualities than PSP -- better definition, 3D depth, and color blending -- and support more advanced features like DOT3 normal map texturing, yet the lower silicon and power consumption of its MBX Lite + VGP Lite graphics core limit it to around half of the PSP's performance.

A game still in development, Ascension, looks to utilize the hardware well for an early effort.

Its tile based, deferred rendering architecture delivers a lot more performance for a given budget of power consumption, though, and clocking its variable rate SoC higher could theoretically give it the performance crown.
Come now, why would you post a video like that knowing that it isn't actually running on iPhone?

Why exactly are you so "anti-PSP" anyways? The iPhone is incredibly impressive for what it is, but you always seem hell bent on proving that the PSP is weak...yet everything you compare it to places the PSP ahead in the end. PSP does have somewhat rough image quality, but what it renders is pretty incredible. Have you actually played God of War on the PSP just to see what it can do? I doubt the iPhone will ever achieve anything even remotely close. Heck, I doubt we'll see anything up to the standards of Ridge Racers (60 fps racing game with quality visuals and sound) which was a launch game in 2004!

it would be more impressive if you couldnt see the mac mouse pointer being used to rotate the scene, which also suggests they either have a very small mouse pointer or its running in a much higher resolution than an iphone could possibly handle.

Does the ipod touch have the graphics coprocessor that the iphone has ?Wikipedia only says that the iphone has it. IF thats the case then some of the apps wont work with the ipod touch.

Have to say motion x poker is awesome. Cant beileve im saying that. Its got achievements, tons of unlockables, good presentation, great graphics and the most important part its alot of fun. Buy it, def worth it at $4.99 its the best.

iPod Touch = iPhone without the phone and camera.

and 3G & GPS (some of the GPS photo tagging stuff and local iPhone user stuff looks great)

Anyway had a quick play of each of my games.

Monkey balls looks great tho I wasn't expecting the fo 3D sprite character.
The controls are gona be frustrating and take some getting used too.

MotionX Poker is great especially for teh price, quick simple yatzee style game with unlockable dice and tables, achievements and tonnes of stats.

The shaking of the dice works great and the vibration as teh dice clack around on teh phone is such a good touch.

Trism so far plays well. Performance is good and visuals are clean. It wholesale rips ideas from a number of games, most notably Hexic. Even has an achievement system. But it still manages to carve out it's own niche. It also has online leaderboards, so this overall seems like one of the better deals on the AppStore right now.

Looking at the different Solitaire packages next - if anyone has a recommendation, I'd be much obliged.

Yeah, Ipod Touch has 1:1 identical hardware to Iphone when it comes to running this software. The only things that won't work are apps that require microphone (and camera, if it's even supported through their API). Buy software without fear!

Is there any way to make the iphone an ipod touch? I've updated to FW 2.0 but can't do anything right now because the unlock isn't here yet (imported the iphone from US)

get a touch! that's what i did today.

So all of these apps will work with the Touch? I wish the storage capacity was there.. I have no reason to carry around a phone, Zune and Touch and the Touch isn't big enough for my music needs. Oh well. :(

When trying to update iPod Touch...

"The iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable. Please Try again later"

I got the same thing, and then all of a sudden the update when completely away and says my iPod is up to date.

How much is this upgrade going to cost me anyway? I was pretty dumb to pay $20 for the previous upgrade.

1. If you hit the "Sync" button at the bottom right then try to update again you'll get the new update message again.

2. $10

Question for all you touch owners ..

Any of you have a PSP? Do you like one over another? Was thinking about picking up a touch but trying to find reason(s) to buy one since I have a psp ...

Just wondering ...

I have both and you can't compare Safari on the iPod Touch to the web browser on the PSP, Safari is way better.

Game wise, you can't compare it right now, the games on the PSP are much better than the ones on the iPod Touch right now. The only difference is the touch screen and motion detector on the Touch, but the games are more like demos than real games, except for one or two full games.

But for applications, the iPod Touch blows away the PSP.

Well I have both. Until now they weren't really comparable due to the Touch's lack of games, but the fact is the Touch is smaller plays music and movies much better and is so much easier to use with Wi-Fi. If you're in college on a wireless campus you don't even need your laptop sometimes you can just use your Touch to browse the internet.

Obviously the games are better on the PSP, but I'm sure the iPod library will grow in time.

Hmm... Looks like Apple pulled a Sony and took 2.0 off the store for Ipod Touch At the moment, lol

or so it seems

EDIT: K seems to be back... still having crappy problem

Thanks, that did work however I'm still getting the message that the iTunes store is currently down.

The touch comes with a 32GB version. I've got over 200 CDs ripped to my iPod and it barely fills up over 18GB.

But aren't good games (talking UMD games) few each year?

I would get an itouch today if the memory capacity wasn't locked in for planned obsolescence.

That really gives me pause at the moment.

Omg MLB.com At Bat makes me want an iPhone. :| Can I use this on Sprint's network somehow? How does the jailbreak thing or whatever work?

At Bat sucks. I thought I would be able to pick my team and track them but all you can do is see all the games for yesterday, today, and tomorrow. You don't even get a full screen of the game you pick. A waste of $5 for me as espn.com works better for keeping track of everything. This is pretty much the only screen you get with it;

I would agree with this, except that if you care about the audio quality even in the slightest (and not only about interface), PSP wins in music department by a landslide. Ipod Touch has the worst background noise of all the Ipods even, which were always amongst the worst players on the market when it came to this. On the other hand, PSP's audio quality is just amazingly pristine, it's something you really appreciate once you have good earphones or earbuds.

You are missing the most important part... when you click on a game that has been played or is in progress you can watch video highlights.

Bejeweled 2. Awesome. Awesomeawesomeawesome. It's just like the one on XBL.

Also bought Monkey Ball and it's a lot of fun but the controls are a little iffy. Will probably get that Critter Crunch game or whatever it's called just based on what I've read so far.

Any site with reviews on the games and what is worth buying?

Any ideas where I might find the lowest price on a Touch? I'm certainly interested in it, but I really don't want to throw down the MSRP.

The video quality is horrible and not even worth looking at.

Great game and perfect for communters, game aves and resumes when you quit out/powerdown, great achievement intergration, online scoreboard and the ipod still plays when in game.
