Jailbreaking is pretty cool. Mine use to be jailbroken before the app store really took off. My fear has been that certain games wouldn't work under jailbroken phones although Costanza would know better than me.

Zombieville USA has just been updated:
  • gets an option screen for difficulty levels
  • A pause button near the life bar
  • The shoot button is still invisible but it's much bigger and more responsive, makes gun play far more useable

Speaking of updates this.

The iDracula is dated to be submited tomorow (march 11).
I found this on their twitter Chillingos twitter

This update releases:
-2 new levels (Great Hall and Frozen Earth)
-2 new game mode
-new creatures
-2 new weapon (one is a flamethrower)
-minor fixes and tweaks

They also say they will increase the price with this update

So if you were going to get it, now is a perfect time before the price goes up.

Yeah, I was going to jailbreak my first gen iphone, but then I picked up a 3G and the ap store has clearly taken off so I guess I don't see a real need.

Just played 20 minutes or so of Oregon Trail. I like it a lot but OH MY GOD THE LOAD TIMES?!?

And also, fuck you opening cinema. Seriously, do these people have no clue how mobile games are played? Same with Word Fu. These games should open to the action and then allow you to opt to the menu if you so choose. Shit takes too long to load to play when I'm waiting in line or sitting on the toilet.

Pardon my ignorance, but does jailbreaking lock you out of the app store?

no it doesn't lock you out of the app store, i jailbroke my iphone the first day out of the box a couple of months ago, and haven't had a problem since

jailbreak it, there's so many cool features to unlock with that (video recording, themes, icon categories, emulators, etc) :D

the aspects of jailbreaking i've used are

Catagories - (the best in my opinion, and the reason i wouldn't be able to go unjailbroken) - lets you make folders, so that you don't have 50 pages of apps on your home screens

Mxtube - lets you download youtube videos

Quickgold - quick search engine to find any application, contact, bookmarks, sms history and safari history... the best thing about it is that it doesn't have an icon to boot the program, you just press the [only] button on the iphone while already on the homescreen, and it'll pop up, ready to use

several video recorder programs - obvious

Bossprefs - lets you quickly and easily toggle options like 3g, edge, wifi, autolock, ssh, email push, and probably anything else you like (as there are app addons which extend functionality of apps like bossprefs), and also lets you hide icons - which i like because i have now hidden the stock youtube and stockmarket and notebook apps and replaced them with better versions of the same thing

Cyntact - the most recent thing i've gotten, manipulates the contact list to show the picture of the contact next to their name in the main list (rather than just a list of names)

added keyboard functionality - best one i can think of is something that allows you to copy and paste to/from a clipboard (something seriously needed in the iphone/touch without jailbreaking)

Australian localization aspects which i can't remember entirely now, but if i recall correctly, when i got the phone, the Australian numbers weren't presented properly and the keyboard didn't have Australian options (like .edu.au rather than .edu)

Winterboard - I don't use this myself, but a lot of people do, it pretty much lets you completely customize your iphone/touch, with respects to skins (battery, background of menu, unlock slider, keypad, program icons, etc) as well as other things like adding more room on the bottom docked line of the menu and a lot more.. winterboard is one of those apps like boss prefs (but a lot more than bossprefs) that has like a zillion app addons, so you'll have lots of themes and options to choose from

and finally, Cydia - the program that makes it all possible, this is the program that you'll get with the jailbreak, it is basically the appstore of jailbreak apps

All that said, I await to hear what else Costanza would like to add to the list, because i'm sure i'm missing a bunch of goodies

The Tap Tap NiN if you like NiN, Tap Tap Dance if you like garbage music (in the same category, christmas with weezer). Other than that, you ought to look at Sway, iDracula, Zombieville USA, geoDefense, the various X-Planes, DropShip (FREE!) (I think), Monospace, Strategery, Passage, Edge, Theseus, Galcon is a pretty cool game eh conquers planets and doesnt afraid of anything, and Frenzic is awesome.

Also you seem to like casinoey stuff, check out Pajatzo, it's an iPhone version of a finnish gambling game (pajatso), I didn't know it and hate gambling but it's awesome.

when an iPhone/ iPod Touch OS update comes out, you can't upgrade to it right away as it will remove the jailbreak. you need to wait for the new jailbreak tools to be released.

I also had issues with certain jailbreak apps (like quickgold and intelliscreen) making my system more unstable. meaning apps would crash more often, i'd have system freezes and would have to reset the phone once every week.

Vik_Vaughn said:

There can be some stability issues and some apps supposedly don't work as well under jailbroken phones due to memory issues. The iphone doesn't have a ton of memory in the first place.

As far as I know.

And the resource-intensive ones run better on last-gen touches than on iphones (it's clocked higher so you get better framerate)

Thanks guys. Last thing, so I don't clutter this thread up too much with this crap:

Ok, so you can always revert back to the factory OS? If so, I'm guessing if Apple releases a new OS I can choose to upgrade to that, and then just wait for the new jailbreak software to come out. Right?

Neo-Sheperd said:

Those who don't rely on specific hardware (i.e. the camera), yes.
The 2nd generation iPod Touch is clocked slightly higher than the iPhone / iPod Touch 1st G.

EDIT: Beaten. :p

The most annoying thing for me is having to reinstall all the jailbreak apps again with every update (although I think there are backup apps for jailbreak programs now, but i've never tried them)

As mentioned before, if you want to update your phone you'll usually want to wait until there is a confirmation of the jailbreaking tool (QuickPwn if you are on windows, something else if you are using mac) is ready for the new firmware

In the early days when i got winterboard, it was slowing some of my apps down a fair amount, most annoying of which was my contact list load time.. although i couldn't find any or many other people on the net having the same problem, uninstalling winterboard did the trick to stop the massive slow-downs and bring things back to normal (which is why i still don't use winterboard despite its neat features -- i'm sure though that it has been updated and bugfixed a multitude of times since then)

I personally haven't noticed all that many crashes/slowdowns with my other apps (besides the problem with winterboard), but again, i've had it jailbroken since day one, so maybe i just don't notice the difference

yep.. best thing about itunes is that "restore" button... no matter how bad you stuff up your phone, as long as itunes can recognise it, you can always bring it back to factory conditions and resync so that it is as good as new

Thanks a bunch, guys! I've actually got a 2nd gen touch, so the contact list thing is a non-issue for me. I may just give this a try tonight.

Unless you need the mic for something, all games work.

One of the great things Apple have done is made the touch and iphone exactly the same apart from the touch not being a phone, that's the only difference.

Also if you have a 2g touch (chrome back plate) you also get internal speaker so you don't need to wear earphones to listen, faster processor and more ram so where a game runs at 20fps on an iphone, it's a good 30fps on a 2g touch :)

Also I have never had to reset my touch after installing an app because you get plenty of ram and memory, you will probably get less crashes too.

------

Space bikers came out this morning for 59p, it's like those old DOS games with the bike and physics, can't hit your head etc.

Does Oregon Trail include a classic mode? I would love to play it but I don't want to deal with all the new shit art and mini-games they added to it. I just want old school Windows 3.1 era Oregon Trail.

Almost certainly not I would guess. That's what a PC is for.

The iPod Touch doesn't have GPS, which is another difference. Not sure if any games use the GPS, but some apps don't work the same on the iPod Touch as a result.

It's decent, load times kill it for me.

Actually, stupid question, but does the iPod Touch have a camera?

This matters for a game I'm developing. Internet seems to say no. Gonna have to pick up an iTouch to QA it before release anyway, but this'll affect the design somewhat.

Just tried a few games these days:
- Rolando Lite: a good Loco Roco clone (it's even a bit more advanced)
- Star Wars TFU Lite: Way too much text for a mobile phone action game. Got bored.
- Space Deadbeef: what a strange shmup ! But pretty good.
- Tap Tap Revenge 2: a nice DDR-like game.

dude, this is REALLY easy to confirm. check Apple's specs page.

no

Jailbreaking has pretty much always been pretty much stable. Ive had my iPhone jailbreaked since day 1, and never had any issues.

Thanks for the link Costanza, it looks simple, but I have modem firmware 02.30.03. Is it possible to roll this back, I don't see how to do that anywhere.

Modem firmware? I don't remember anything about that.

You should be using either this for Windows, or this for Mac

Oh yeah, I read it as one and the same. I'm dumb.

So after I do this I'll be able to resync everything back onto my phone right?

Yep. But you will lose your saved data from apps (I think, I can't remember).

Any more opinions on The Oregon Trail? I'm staring at its page on the App Store right now but the load times people are complaining about are worrying me :(

Well, the load times bugged me because I was playing on the shitter at work so time was of the essence. Also, there is a lot of loading. For the way I generally use my iphone, I doubt I would buy it again. I never just sit around and play it, it's generally in the car or when I am waiting for something.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Sorry for being lazy; I just keep hearing the phrase 'The only thing it's missing is the phone' and I wasn't sure if I was just missing something on the specs page.
